Turns out she did the cooking too and we ordered four dishes: a spicy tofu soup, hot stone pot bibimbap, rice cake dumpling soup, and spicy pork bulgogi. Coming from a Korean, the food was really good. It hit the spot for my Korean food fix, especially the pork bulgogi. The side dishes were also fresh and delicious. Pretty outstanding mom and pop Korean food joint nestled in the middle of a convenience store. Yep, you heard me. Now that I think about it, I've had some of the best food in settings like this from the northern Vietnamese Pho in Prague, to the Thai/Lao food in Brussels. Now here in our awesome H-town. The yukhaejang (beef and veggie soup) was one of the better if had in Houston. Spicy enough, deep flavor in the stock, nice ratio of meet to veggies. If you're new to this dish, think of it like Korean ropa vieja, but soupy. My wife got the selleongtang (oxe bone soup), and you can taste the glucosamine-sticky goodness in the soup. Not the biggest array of banchan, but enough and good quality for a quick and reasonably priced meal. The haemul paejon (seafood pancake) is GINORMOUS and well executed. Comes with the quintessential pancake crack-sauce (my name for it), and you can ask for spicy gojujang on the side. read more

First time going back to our old favorite lunch spot since stupid COVID, a Korean restaurant tucked inside a convenience store. So glad to see our Hispanic lady is still holding down the fort all these years and she didn't yell at me today for being a pain in the ass. We got the Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup (ChamPong), Pan-fried Atka Mackerel, a top pick of ours, and Ox Bone Soup (SuLongTang). Food is excellent as usual, it's also nostalgic to return to this spot that we frequented years ago, before the foodie culture. I miss the sweet dessert rice drink they used to put out, it's getting tighter for small business owners, I understand. Really delicious, even when arriving by UberEats! We ordered a bunch and pretty much everything hit the spot. Would totally order again :D The pajeon (savory pancake) was soft by the time it got to us (crisp it up with some air fryer magic!), but it still got a thumbs up for flavor and how packed it was with green onions and seafood. Didn't need the dipping sauce IMO! The kalbi is on the sweet side and some of the better ones I've had; it doesn't have the char or smokiness but I like it since it wasn't smothered in sauce. The tofu stew is definitely on the more tangy / kimchi flavored side, but it was still great with the perfectly cooked, slightly sticky white rice. Side dishes like the kimchi and veggies added that healthy part of your meal. MmmMmm! The only thing I'd skip next time would be the jajangmyeon-- the black bean noodles. It was well packaged with a huge portion of the sauce, but guess I'm not a huge fan, as it didn't taste like much. The noodles were nicely cooked and also generously portioned out. There was a lot of good things about this place, the food was affordable, and the ladies that attended me were nice (a plus because i speak Spanish too) , and the banchan was really good! The fish cakes were my faveee. I ordered jjajangmyeon and while the portion was huge and a steal for only $12 , it really didn't taste like anything...even with the chili powder which made me upset because i really wanted to like this. On the edge of China Town, this restaurant is attached to the Young Convenience Store and only has a Korean sign over the restaurant entrance. It is not fancy in any way, but they have a full menu of authentic Korean food and it is delicious. My favorites are the spicy seafood soup and the stir-fry squid. I always get orders for take-out but there are tables for dine-in. The prices are low and the the portions are generous. This is a mom-and-pop owned restaurant located on the north end of Young's Store. The menu is much smaller than previous operator. The staff is much friendlier than before. I'm here mostly Friday afternoons before dinner rush. I constantly seeing flow of customers coming in. It's a cozy place for dinner, really. It offers takeout as well. To avoid those school buses and stop signs on Ranchester, I normally come here from Harwin. People asked me which is my favorite. I can only try one dish at a time. So check my photos for the answer. This was a proper hole in the wall. We walked in and were surprised by it being an extension to a convenience store. Seated in front of a freezer with an interesting selection of cheap wines and eggs, my boyfriend and I ordered the #2 bibambap and #8(?) kimchi fried rice. It was so damn good. Less than 15 mins, the lady brought out two steaming bowls with an assortment of sides. Water is not included btw. No biggie, my boyfriend walked less than 200 feet to the right to buy drinks. Super convenient. Their prices are probably the best in the area. For that alone, it's 5 stars. Also, the bathroom door actually opens to another door. Don't confused by this, it's like a little test of persistence. Open the second door. This place is no bullshit. You ask, they deliver. Don't come if you're looking for an inviting environment. We ordered the: Seolleongtang is a Korean broth tang (soup) made from ox bones (mostly leg bones), brisket and other cuts. Seasoning is generally done at the table according to personal taste by adding salt, ground black pepper, red pepper, minced garlic, or chopped spring onions. This rather nondescript little hole in the wall has seen better days. On my last visit for lunch, I discovered my favorite pork lunch special was no longer offered here which made me really sad. I went ahead and ordered one of the advertised lunch specials, the kimchi fried rice. I'm not usually a fan of fried rice, but I always make an exception for kimchi fried rice! The beautiful picture of it on the counter showed a delicious looking runny fried egg on top, and seeing that picture sealed the deal for me! When I received the dish, there was no fried egg on top. I asked the woman jumping back and forth between the dining room and the kitchen about it, and she said it doesn't come with the lunch special. I look at the sign again, and it clearly says lunch special with the picture. How disappointing. The dish itself was nice though, but it definitely could have used an extra pinch of salt. There was definitely enough for food two meals if you're okay with eating a lot of rice. The banchan was tasty though. While I overall enjoyed the meal, it was definitely not as satisfying as previous visits. They've definitely shrunk their menu down and raised the prices quite a bit. My sister and I were craving for some korean food and looked up a few places nearby on yelp. We decided on this one and it was hard to find. We drove around for quite a bit of time before we found it tucked away in a plaza. The owners were friendly and recommended some dishes. HAEMUL PAJEON- seafood and green onion pancake The pancake was soggy and the flavor was oily and salty. I love green onions, but this was an overload of just onions and the seafood was fishy and didn't taste fresh. This dish was a fail. KIMCHI JIGAE- kimchi stew The soup had a very thin consistency and had a very fishy flavor. This was not my favorite and I've had better kimchi elsewhere. ZHAJIANGMIAN- black soybean paste noodle This was my favorite dish of the meal. The black paste was flavorful and nicely seasoned. I would've liked some sort of meat, but instead I believe I tasted some potatoes in this dish. Other than that this dish really hit the flavors spot on with the savory paste, perfectly cooked noodles, fresh cucumbers, and sunny side up egg. A fantastic restaurant. Authentic Korean food for a wonderful price. My first trip here was quite the adventure and it was a bit difficult to find at first. It is located at the back of a convenient store in a dangerous looking shopping strip, but the food was very worth it! The Restaurant sign is in all Korean, rather than English. The bibimbab (hot stone rice dish) and bulgogi (Korean beef) here are very large in portions, and are rich flavors. The price is averaged at $7 - $15 for a regular entree which includes soup and an assortment of banchan (side dishes). A total bang for your buck, for Korean food. Albeit the great food, this place is not the best for large groups to dine in since it is in the back of a convenient store, and the staff seems annoyed of large (non Korean) groups. I recommend taking it all to-go. This place is worth the adventure and the experience. Ladies, it's best not to go here alone since the area is a bit shady. read more

Walked into restaurant, at least two different employees looked at me. After not being sure what to do and standing at counter for a minute I grabbed a menu and sat myself. I then waited five minutes, and still greeted by no one. One of the two employees that saw me was in the front counter area the whole time yet said nothing. I walked back to counter, put my menu back in the menu stand and non employees looked at me and still said nothing. Poor customer service to say the least. I will never know about their food because I won't be returning. Zero stars would be inappropriate, I hope management sees this and addresses. Actually this should be a 3.5. The owner or specifically the guy who has taken my order and who serves my food has aggravated me in mild but real ways. I did not like being asked if I could "handle chopsticks" as I was asked yesterday when he brought out my food. -"You talkin' to me??!"... I also did not feel that he was especially open to conversation with me which I take personally as I think of myself as charming and witty. On my last two visits, I noticed how he does love to engage with the Spanish-speaking customers and chats with them in some detail about the menu and ingredients in the food. His Spanish is quite good, but he boasted to me that his English was better. If it is, he certainly does not go out of his way with the Anglophone customers. (Probably because there aren't any! And I am just being sensitive). So, I spoke to him a bit in Spanish and he still came across to me as a bit cocky. Kudos go to yelp and the other reviews for making it possible for me to find this place. It's tucked away in a very shady strip mall, replete with a "spa" and game room, with next to no indication it's there. The arrangement inside reminds me of a smaller version of Savoy, because it is part of a convenience store. Two things leap out instantly once inside: (1) the menu is extensive, with pictures of all dishes hanging above the register and (2) the food is cheap! I tried the spicy pork dish and my friend ordered the seafood stew. A few minutes after ordering, the cashier hustled out with the full spread of side dishes one would expect to receive at a conventional Korean restaurant. To my taste, the radish served here is as good or better than anywhere in town. The other side dishes were also quite good with the exception of the seaweed, which simply wasn't my thing. I can be quite an eater, but even I was surprised by the size of the stew bowl. It made large pho orders look puny by comparison. Even more surprising at the price point, it contained big chunks of real crab and large head-on prawns, which are not included at the other places I like (which charge a little more). The flavors were well developed and the proportion of ingredients to broth was just right. The pork was a mix of pork belly and conventional meat, with onions and broccoli and probably something I'm forgetting. It wasn't spicy to my taste, but it was good even if slightly one-dimensional. I will be back to try the stone bowl bibimbamp and dumplings. If those are equally impressive, I'll probably end up eating my way through half the menu. The bottom line: great prices, big to enormous portions, and tasty food that stands up to Noodle House Myung Dong. Pay a visit and become a fan! read more

This eatery is found in Asia Town on Ranchester, just north of Bellaire. At first glance, the restaurant blends in perfectly with the convenience store next door and the numerous "massage" parlors in the same plaza. However, if you are brave enough to enter it's gates...you will be treated to authentic affordable Korean eats, from Tofu Soup to BiBimBap. Sorry, no BBQ (at least not the kind where you do it yourself). The prices are good and there are actually nothing but Korean folks inside (a sure sign of an authentic experience). You order your food up front where the cashier is standing, choose a table, and they bring your food out to you. You pay when you're done eating. The side dishes are pretty good. I really liked the potato side dish, the bean sprout side dish, and their kimchi is pretty good. My dad always gets the seafood noodle soup. I've never tried it but it looks like you get a good amount of seafood with the noodles. My mom and I love their seafood pancake. Other places make it really greasy; here, it's not as bad. There isn't that gross taste of grease when you're eating it. And they are pretty generous with the seafood. The dipping sauce that comes with the pancake is good too. Personally, I like their kimchi fried rice; it comes with a fried egg on top. And for the price, they give you a lot. I can never finish it. Their ox-bone soup is nice. Sometimes it's a bit salty, but apparently it takes several hours to make. Since it hours to make, the soup is very flavorful and delicious. The price is not cheap, average more than $10, which is expensive for this kind of restaurant. I had spicy beef soup, beef fried rice and boiled dumpling. The soup was ok but the real bummer was fried rice and dumpling. They used frozen veggie, very thin slice of meat and over cooked rice which make the fried rice very mushy. Dumpling was very overpriced. I like to eat all kind of dumpling and when I saw it was $9 I expected something very special. Sadly no. I got what looked like dumplings from a frozen bag you can find in an Asian glossary store, very generic taste and small portion for that price. FOOD: I ordered the galbitang (pork bone soup), and it was REALLY good. The taste of the soup was delicious...and quite healthy-tasting if I may say. I tried my friend's bulgogi, and it was surprisingly good too. It didn't have the spicy taste of the bulgogi from Tofu Village, so it was really unique. I also tried the galbi, and let's just say the galbi here is nothing like the ones I've ever tasted from other Korean restaurant. The presentation was different. The taste was different. It was a mixture of BBQ and Roasted Beef. Very interesting...and delicious. I didn't get to try the bibimbap unfortunately, but it looked really good. And the portion is out of this world. I agree with other reviewers here - it's definitely a hole-in-the wall restaurant but it's not as shady as other reviewers think. Staff were nice, place is cleaner than other hole-in-the wall restaurant that I've been to. Also, the menu has pictures and korean names in them but they do have english labels written in a tiny print. I ordered the bulgogi and tofu soup, they were good for the price I've paid but wouldn't rave about it. Quantity wise, I do agree they have BIG PORTION but I still prefer Jang Guem Tofu & BBQ House and Tofu Village for quality. read more
