I went for an eye exam only. Being that I have limited insurance. I wasn't sure what to expect. Seeming that his reviews were up and down. I was a little late because I got a tiny bit lost. The front desk personal was polite enough, considering my tardiness. The place is small, and a little cluttered. Most likely of it's size. But it was quiet and the Doctor seemed busy and involved with his patients. The front desk personal helped me with the paperwork needed and did preliminary testing. They were continually polite, kind and soft spoken. Then the Doc came out and, true to a review on Yelp... He had on a bow tie. I thought it looked fashionable and well on this man. It was a good touch to give you an idea of the Doc's personality. He got straight to the exam, asking important questions and and finding out my needs. He clearly knew my eyes and I could tell right away that he had a good understanding of where I was as he went through. I've never had an eye doctor do the workings of my prescription as accurately and quickly as him. He did tell stories... But they were good and he was personable. I prefer that. When it was over, he made no bones about understanding that I was there for the exam only. He was not about the money. Which was refreshing. He made suggestions of where I could get frames if I should choose that would fit my budget and made sure his staff gave me prescription. I've been going to this office for 15 years, since I was but a wee one, when Dr. Lee owned it. I came in for an exam and new glasses after Dr. Hiura took over. Dr. Hiura is awkward, asks a lot of personal questions, tells lots of stories, and carries on in a way that did not make me feel comfortable. Their office is overtly religious as demonstrated by the relics and religious-themed music playing in the background (again, uncomfortable). The exam itself was standard. They tested my eyes for a very rare disease that requires me to purchase extremely expensive, hard contact lenses to counteract this very, very rare disease. No, thank you. I received my glasses and the prescription was very wrong. They ended up causing headaches and severe strain in my eyes. All in all, I am not going back (to correct my prescription or continue to be a customer) because I do not trust them to accurately provide the service that I am paying for. Their practices are sketchy and the environment is uncomfortable, even for an optometrist's office. read more

I decided to try a local doctor rather than a doctor based in a cubby hole in a department store like Walmart or Target. This doctor was just down the street and thought...hey! why not? I used to live in the South Bay and have seen a lot of small offices and even had a regular eye doctor in a small office that was expeditious yet professional. So I went in and the office was practically empty except for one old guy who it turns out was quite disgruntled and eager to leave to complete his exam. As soon as the doctor spotted me it was as if I was the last patient on Earth..or rather the expression and reaction a pit bull has when he sees a raw bloody steak. He asked me how I had heard about his office to which I replied "Oh I just drove by a few times and decided to drop in" he then immediately hustled to finish whatever he had in the side room and sat down next to me as I was filling out some first time patient form. I was a bit taken aback by this because I've never dealt with a doctor that acted this peculiar. I've met "quacks" but only my pediatrician was as nutty as this guy. So after a few oddball questions I went to the back and started the exam...or so I thought I was. My appointment was at 11:30am it was almost 1pm by the time I got out there!! Half of the things he spoke about were personal life experiences mixed with gibberish and nervous laughter....I was quite uncomfortable. The next thing I know he grabs a camera decides to take my photo (quickly I might add) and says that one day he wants to have one of those "changing photo frames" that some people see in other dentist offices (I haven't seen any in the AV as of yet). I couldn't wait to get out of there. Then he gives me this off the wall absurd suggestion and sermon that hard contact lenses are better than soft contact lenses? That is the most backward thing I've ever heard. Not to mention of course I did the math and figured he was trying to milk my insurance for everything it was worth probably because he hardly has any patients!! and I can see why! I ended up going to the mall where the doctor did a thorough exam and even found a mild problem with my eyes which this quack overlooked probably because he was too busy talking and testing!!! Unless you have Medical/EBT or some sort of welfare medical and have no other choice....AVOID this quack!!! read more

I had my very first optometry visit and I wasn't disappointed. The staff were very kind and friendly. Dr. Hiura does talk and ask questions but I wouldn't say it's awkward, I actually enjoyed the conversation. They took me in for an eye exam and it turned out that my eyes were fine. Which was good to hear! They recommended I get reading glasses for myself because it prevents less stress on the eyes if I happen to read a lot of books, and I'm glad I did. They cared for my needs and made sure I was satisfied. Money was no issue, it was affordable. I'll defintely recommend this place to my family and friends. read more

I was trying to find a new place to get my contact exam and new contacts and I picked this one. Staff are very nice and the dr was good. A little nerdy all with his bow tie and all. He does talk to you about various things and gets side tracked with stories. I figured he is a old man that likes to talk like any other old person that just wants to tell stories to someone. The contacts he gave me where awesome. Didnt even know I had them in!!! Lol it was strange when he quickly whipped out the camera and said he does this patient of the.month and there is a winner we like to give stuff to. I took my daughter for a check-up for the first time here at this office and it was not exactly what I was looking for he asked too many personal questions... not about my daughter but about me. He spoke very fast and did not make since with any of the things he said to me concerning her vision, not to mention he pulled out this digital camera and quickly snapped a picture of my daughter and stated he does this every month for every child and they would receive a special gift for patient of the month! this guy was a total weirdo and he has no idea how fast he's going to be shut down! I repeat DO NOT Take YOUR FAMILY here I'm sure this guy is a fraud of some sort!!! Everything about this office says medi-cal fraud. read more

Something has to be said for Yelp!!ers who don't have any "friends." It's a small office, seems to be a family affair. I rather have a Dr. Speaking to me rather than be rushed in and out like a number. I have no complaints they've been great. read more

If I could rate this place a zero I would do just that. I don't ever make time to write reviews but my experience was so bad, I must share! Dr. Hiura needs to retire as it's quite obvious he hates his job! He was asking way too many personal questions in regards to my foster son and in front of him! This was so disrespectful and rude! He spent more time asking questions than doing his job. He also has zero patience and is very scattered brain with his work. The whole experience was odd. I took my 1 year old with me and he got fussy and Dr. Hiura was irritated and made me feel very uncomfortable. Take my advice, don't go here! Waste of time! read more

This is a nice small place, clean and tidy. I brought my daughter for her eye exam and my daughter said "the eye doctor is cool mom!" he really does talk to you and tries to make you feel comfortable. At least he tries to get to know you as a client. Not just hurry take your money and rush you out. Will be returning again. :) read more
