We got takeout and heated things up at home. The fondue was fun but very starched; I usually prefer a more cheesy, less starchy approach. The Rösti (fried potato hash) had good potatoes and cheese, but benefitted from an egg we fried at home --- would have been nice to order that version. The inside and the food definitely reminded me of Switzerland, though the styrofoam takeout containers didn't. I'd love to go back some time when it's easier to eat inside. read more

Next time you are in New Glarus you should give quaint Swiss place a go. You must put the Pork Schnitzel sandwich on your list of things to try. It is so tender and full of good flavor. When in New Glarus I am told you have not been until you have visited Glarner Stube! This restaurant/bar was very intimidate and cozy and felt like a true local place that was just really inviting. A fun fact- New Glarus Brewery will give you a token to get a free mini beer to use at the establishments downtown to drive up business and get folks to try the local spots! The cheese fondue is why I came and the fish fry is why I stayed. Both were great options and very satisfying. I have tried to make it my mission to get an old fashioned at all places in Wisconsin so I failed and didn't get one here but I plan to return and can update! Definitely a must if visiting the brewery. Pro tip: be prepared to wait, the bar is cool to hang out at and the staff and locals will more than likely get to know you as well! read more

Our family has been going to this restaurant for over 15 years. It used to be a real treat. Our last couple of visits have been lackluster but we keep holding out hope for a return to quality. Our visit yesterday may have been our last. I'll start with the worst-- the food. They had no salads available. One waitress claimed the cooler was broken. The other waitress was telling people that they were getting ready for the holiday shutdown (which was 3 full days away). My wife ordered the bone in ribeye medium rare. It arrived cooked past well done. I ordered the tenderloin cooked to medium. It came out raw in the center and flash burned on the outside. Backing up to our arrival-- the place was fairly empty so we paused to enjoy a drink at the bar. We ordered a couple of old fashioneds. The young lady behind the bar was clearly very new because she didn't know how to charge us. The drinks were terrible. I don't object to new people learning but apparently her trainer was off to the side allowing her to fail. I'm not sure what happened at this formerly great restaurant. If you're looking for a fun place to grab a Swiss meal, then look no further! We came here on a Sunday night following some wine tasting and started off with some cheese curds. They were very lightly breaded and served with peppercorn ranch and ketchup. I would compare them to a grilled cheese sandwich - melted and and delicious! After that, I had a prime rib sandwich, and others had a portabello burger, pork schnitzel, and sauerbraten. Most of us also had rosti, which was hashbrowns with cheese. Honestly, I could have just had the rosti and been happy - slightly cheesy potato goodness!! The BEST place to visit, we drive from Madison just to stop in here. Favorite things to order: bowl of beef (tender beef with horseradish dipping sauce) -- it's like a Swiss twist on fondue -- cheese curds (melty cheese surrounded by a fluffy beer batter coating), Wiener schnitzel (a must, it will blow your mind) and tack on a side of a rösti (giant hash-brown meets Swiss cheese= deliciousness). We drove about two hours from our home to Glarner Stube. When we arrived there was a note posted on the door that they were closed due to a staffing shortage. We were disappointed because we wanted to treat our 83 year old sister. We wouldn't have made the trip if something had been posted on their website that they were closed. Yes, it is worth the 2 hour drive for their food! My review is based on my last meal there. We had brought our own gluten free Shar deli bread and they made our ruebens with it. This place is amazing! We were in town for a fest but we were dying to try this place. We went into the bar and grabbed some beers....they told us we could order in the bar area BUT only appetizers. We were interested in a meal and also the dining room was so cute we really wanted to sit in there so we waited a while for a table but boy was it worth it! Every time we visit New Glarus, we try to hit a different bar/dining establishment. This time, Glarner Stube. It's definitely old school, and a little on the dark side, with lots of vintage looking decor and gigantic cow bells hanging from the ceiling. Seriously, the one over the bar is as big as a human head, if not larger! We sat at the bar and the service was fairly quick. The bartender was nice and although he answered any questions we had, he wasn't very talkative, even to the regulars. Everything on the menu sounded delicious, but I went with the special of the day, the prime rib sandwich. I don't normally do beef, but it just sounded so good! A fair sized slab of meat on a hoagie type bun, served with a small dish of horseradish cream spread, and your choice of sides. I opted for fries, which, by the way, were outstanding! The sandwich was the same...I took one bite and was very happy that I didn't get the schnitzel sandwich (hubs got that and it was very good, I just think mine was better). The meat was juicy and tender, not at all rubbery. Combined with the horseradish sauce, OMG, there are no words! I wasn't feeling boozy, so I just got a coke. It tasted a little weird, honestly, like they mixed it with diet, or like it was a generic coke. They have a full bar and it has everything you could possibly want, in terms of booze, and the beers are mostly New Glarus brews. I used to love coming here with my grandmother (who lived in New Glarus) back in the 80s and 90s. They always knew who she was and made us feel like royalty. The prices were great and the food was amazing. It was at this location that my uncle announced to the family he was getting married. My brother and I would frequent here quite often on our yearly trips to New Glarus. So as you can see, I have quite the history here. However, over the years the prices have gotten a bit out of hand. Yes, honestly I will still come here and pay those prices, but it seems a bit much these days. I will say that the service is always top notch and the food is as well. Get the cheese fondue if you have an appetite! And check out the world's largest urinal. If you don't get to see it there is a postcard you can buy, LOL! read more

My wife was homesick for Germany so we decided to take a short trip West to New Glarus for a "European" fix! The restaurant has a cozy Southern Germany chalet feel to it hosting various wall décor to include farming tools. A full bar is also attached hosting some of the local beers on tap. My wife had the Pork Schnitzel and I had a Ruben. We also decided on some Rosti to see how close they could replicate the Swiss dish. Spot on all foods! My wife was amazed how well the Schnitzel was prepared along with the Rosti. The staff was so friendly and, along with the prices, made for a wonderful experience. Can't begin to express my frustration. We made reservations to stay in town and everything was planned around dinner here. We called ahead on Friday night and was told the kitchen would be closed by 7:30 so we ate before coming to town and planned Saturday dinner here. Because they do not take reservations For a party of four people we expected to wait when we arrived and were ok with that. Because of their early closing of the kitchen 8:00 we arrived at 6:30. There was a sign on the door to turn away anyone arriving due to no longer taking seating for dinner. How do you have dinner here if there are no reservations and 6:30 is too late to wait? Went in anyway hoping that with an explanation an exception would be made. I explained I booked two nights in town for my family which was an $800 investment which was centered around our dinner at this establishment along with a day in the town. That along with the fact we tried the previous night but we're told of the early closing and not accepting reservations . Fish fry !! Went with a group, and the group enjoyed the fondue, with big chunks of boring bread. In fact, most in the group almost entirely filled up on that. When you are hungry, you will do things like that. Then came the fish fry. I got the all-you-can-eat. The coating to the fish tastes like a chemical factory in southern Louisiana. There is something so twistedly salt/alum/bicarb about this thick, hard, coating to the fish, that you know immediately there is something wrong. What I wound up doing (is this allowed?) is to hollow out the lurid crimson outside coating of the all-you-can-eat fish, and just eat the fish inside. This somehow approximated eating a fish meal, but was somehow tainted. Horrible food, unless you manage to stuff yourself silly on the gloppy fondue, before the fish gets there. read more

The red Rueben is fantastic! I mean everything we had (normal Rueben, cheesy chicken tortilla soup, "authentic" German potato salad) was good. But I've. Ever had a "red" Rueben before. Now I think it's going to be my go-to. It's just red cabbage kraut, but what a great taste! And the potato salad is sooo vinegary and delicious. I drank the juice it was so good. Plus having spotted cow in New Glarus just seems like a rite of passage of some sort, so we did that too. Trust me it's a great stop. And get the Strudel too, you'll be happy you did. read more

On a trip to New Glarus to check out the brewery, we came upon New Glarus the town. We had no idea how adorable this little Swiss town was! It's like walking down the road in Switzerland in the town center. And right smack dab in the middle of it is Glarner Stube. Glarner Stube is the quintessential hometown restaurant. We were there right before Christmas and it was decked out in holiday decor providing an uplifting atmosphere. Our server was super forgetful...not remembering dishes, that we needed silverware, a couple other small things. But she was so nice and personable, that we overlooked any shortcomings she may have had. We tried many deep fried and indulgent Wisconsin-esque items and all of them were good. Their Roesti (Swiss Fried Potatoes) was a huge and filling portion with great flavor. A friend and I shared the Flank Steak Sandwich, marinated with olive oil, lemon and garlic served on a hoagie roll. Filled us up well and again tasted delicious. Now the cheese curds...ummmm those were amazing! Beer battered and deep fried just as they should be with cheddar cheese. We also did the cheese fondue served bubbling with swiss cheese, wine, garlic and kirsch. They bring a heater out to your table to keep it going! The fondue is served with bread which is always a good accompaniment but I would have loved some more dipping options...things like apples, sausages, cauliflower, pretzels? Some variety would have been good. Aside from the food, the beer options were awesome. Of course they have New Glarus beer on tap and MANY options. More than the brewery. Way more than the brewery. And cheaper. And in different sizes. Honestly, I liked going to the brewery to see the grounds but for actually tasting the beer, Glarner Stube beats the brewery by a mile! Pro Tip:Go check out the brewery first and you'll get a coupon for a free beer when you go to Glarner Stube. I believe you need to order a flight to get this coupon. We were all so incredibly full from this feast, we waddled out like a quartet of potbelly pigs. Garner Stube is a great option for a meal or a drink in New Glarus. It's cute, cozy and full of Swiss decor. We stopped recently for lunch based on strong Yelp reviews and weren't disappointed. The dining area is small (maybe 12-15 tables) and it seems like a popular place so you may end up waiting a bit at busy times. In addition to New Glarus tappers they have a Swiss bottled beer which I'd never seen before. It was pretty good & fairly priced at $4/bottle. Even though they were busy, our food arrived quickly. Hubs had the prime rib sandwich special (weekends only) and dispatched it almost instantly. He said it was great - tender & not at all chewy or gristly. I went with a schnitzel sandwich which really should be renamed "pork tenderloin sandwich" as it wasn't breaded. Still, it was delicious - and a little healthier I guess. Any caloric savings was immediately spent on the roesti potatoes which are full of butter & cheese. The dinner menu has some fun options - delicious fondue & something called "Gary's Bowl of Beef" - who DOESN'T want that? It's places like this I miss from when I lived in Wisconsin. Glarner Stube is that wonderful small town bar with friendly service, great food and friendly patrons who engage with you even though you are not from their town. We walked in after a tour at the nearby New Glarus Brewing Company, and were seated promptly in the back. Now if you are a Bears or Cubs fan and are wearing your team colors, BEWARE! There is a small sign thumbtacked to the wall up front that says there is "special seating for Illinois fans", but know the second part of that sign says it's out by the dumpster! Ha! Had us laughing from the moment we walked in and it had my friend quickly removing his cap. We were definitely in Wisconsin! Our server, Rosie, was delightful! She took our order (cheese, cheese, and more cheese!) and quickly brought our drinks. While the menu has plenty of things on it besides cheese (like there was a pork loin and potato special of the day for a very reasonable price, bratwurst, steaks, chicken, etc) we wanted heavy snacks so we ended up with fried cheese curds (a little too much breading for our group but tasty nonetheless) the cheese fondue (quite tasty with plenty of bread for dipping) roesti, a sort of hash brown dish (wonderful) and the meat and cheese plate (also good). The beer was cold and drinks well poured. The table next to us started talking to us to tell us about other brewery and distillery tours we should do in Wisconsin. And at some point, our server actually pulled up a chair and sat down and visited with us! Love that (especially since she was just the kind of person you would love to have at your table!) As we were leaving, the front bar area was packed with locals and they said actually said good bye to us and told us we were so nice they would make an exception to their Illinois team seating "rule". They don't take reservations on weekends so plan on arriving early or waiting a long time. For starters we had the fondu and cheese curds. Both are excellent! The curds have a thick tempura coating which added pizazz! My wife and I shared the wiener schnitzle and baked cod. Schnitzle was good and the cod was a bit bland but otherwise a good piece of fish. Unfortunately our experience was ruined by a very rude server. We arrived in the afternoon on a Saturday with plans to have some of the fondue and then get sandwiches. The server was disinterested and did not seem to be having a good day, which I get it, it happens. We put in orders for the special of the day, prime rib sandwiches, a bratwurst meal, and schnitzel. One of the party specifically asked for his own roesti as his side, saying he wanted to take home the leftovers, and said it was fine if they had to upcharge. He mentioned this to the waitresses he ordered and it seemed fine. Two of us also ordered a roesti as the side and we planned to split it. The fondue took around 30 minutes to arrive (which seemed odd as it's just hot cheese and cold untoasted bread) and was good but not great. But we kept waiting and waiting for the meal. The tables emptied out around us and yet no food runners magically appeared with our food. As we could see into the kitchen we began to become distracted from our conversations and kept peering behind the swinging doors, hoping we were next. Our server was nowhere to be found. Finally the food arrived and lo and behold, only one roesti. We mentioned to the waitress that he had ordered one specifically for himself and instead of rectifying this simple and small issue she simply dug in her heels and argued. She told us that the way of the restaurant is to share and that he doesn't get his own. We eventually gave up as we had been there over an hour and a half by that point and were famished. But then the check was dropped and we got charged for the extra roesti. We attempted to bring it up to the waitress but she was not having it by that point and actually walked away mid-conversation. Honestly, we were dumbfounded. We had not at any time been rude to her, we just did not want to pay for something we did not receive. We debated whether to discuss with the manager at one point and eventually spoke to the hostess on the way out. We just wanted not to pay for the roesti that was not received, or at the very least have someone acknowledge that something was amiss. They offered to comp a meal which was very kind but not really what we wanted, and we declined and asked them to not charge for the roesti. We left feeling like we had somehow done something wrong, although we hadn't. Really was not a good finish to the meal. Unfortunately it will likely not bring us back here, which is sad because otherwise the atmosphere is fun and the food isn't bad! read more

Shared some with a guy at the bar and he bought me a beer. Sampled several brews and decided I needed a bite to eat. Settled on the Reuben and was not disappointed. Well seasoned meat, good kraut, and toasty bread... Large portion so I handed half over to the guy next to me, and he bought me another brewski...Bonus! Great people, great beers, quality food...
