My son and I were visiting Cave of the Mounds and decided to stop and visit a local place for lunch. Based on the Yelp reviews there were a couple places in the area so we picked this one. It's a small bar with about 7 tables. We sat at the bar, and ordered sodas. I had a sandwich (can't recall the name, the one with ham and bacon) and my son had chicken tenders. They did not have a kids menu so got a huge order of tenders. The sandwich was pretty good. Prices were pretty reasonable. The best part was the ranch, it was homemade and delicious. They did have a steak special for lunch and the burgers also looked good. read more

On our way back from Iowa we stopped here as a recommendation. We came at an odd time so there were only a few other people there. The bartender quickly took our order and provided menus. It was quite smokey in the small space and they were only cooking one burger on the flat top behind the bar. Someone turned on an exhaust fan which helped but it was bitterly cold, like 2 degrees outside so the fan made it chilly inside. It was kind of a joke, no one else seemed to mind, sort of a "better than cigarette smoke" kind of thing =) We ordered a bowl of chili and mini corn dogs. The chili was delicious, obviously home made. Prices were right and we heard they have a good fish fry so I'm sure we'll return soon enough. read more

This is the perfect example of a quality, Wisconsin, small-town dive bar. The bartenders are always super nice, the food menu is simple, but there are a lot of homemade items, and they have a small, but good tap beer selection from the Madison craft beer market. We enjoyed a build your own hand-pattied burger and the homemade fish slider special, along with a Madtown Nut Brown and Fantasy Factory. They do meat raffles here, which I think is a hilarious, awesome thing. Locals are very nice and welcoming. My only wish is that they would do handcut homemade fries. Swing by Hooterville next time you are in the Mount Horeb area. read more

Was very disappointed this evening, took my kids out for fish fry, it was busy, a table had a reserve sign on it, they cleared a table next to that one for us....we waited, 10 minutes later 8 people sat down and had orders taken right away, food came for them in about 10 minutes....we waited 50 minutes still no food, several others that came 20+ minutes had their already food too!!! I went up and talked to the hostess, that we still hadn't gotten our food and that the table next to us that came after us are already done eating......."She said, well they come every week and we know what they order"....no apologies...no nothing...not coming back I own a business myself and work in the service industry... After reading great reviews for the Hooterville Inn, we decided to make the hour-long drive over. I'm glad we did! First, be aware that they take reservations and I highly recommend that you take advantage of that. We started off with a couple of Old Fashioneds and they were tall and delicious. A nice big slice of orange and two cherries floating on top were a nice touch. I ordered the combo of two pieces of cod and two jumbo shrimp, all deep fried in their Spotted Cow beer batter. My husband had three pieces of cod, beer battered and deep fried. We both chose the hash browns with cheese and onions and cole slaw. The batter on the fish and shrimp comes so crispy and golden brown. Absolutely sublime. The hash browns are cooked on a flat top and are crispy and perfectly done. The cole slaw is creamy and tasted home made, the rye bread was there because it had to be and it was a nice hearty slice of pumpernickel rye. Be prepared to wait, even with a reservation. It's not the biggest place out there and the kitchen is in full view at the end of the bar (it is small.). The wait is well worth it. read more

Just the local restaurant in the quiet village of Blue Mounds, named after a literal mound... (but it does have a good view!). And damn, is their beer-battered fish fry good! We visited on St. Patrick's Day so they also had corned beef, but if it's Friday in Wisconsin you know what you're ordering. If you've read some of my other recent fish fry reviews, you know I eat a lot and have been a bit disappointed in quantity at a couple recent stops. Hooterville Inn did not disappoint. I felt very satisfied when I was done! For $13, you get 3 pieces of battered cod, side 1 of slaw or cottage cheese (I don't eat slaw so I went with the cheese), side 2 of potato (boiled, hash browns, or fries). You can get the hash browns with cheese and I think onions for an extra 50 cents. Go for it. The price point is great, on the lower end, and it's a generous amount of food with the hash browns. But you're here for the fish. It is generously battered and the fish has a much smoother look than many other fish fries, somewhat like frybread or funnel cake, because of that. And because of the thicker batter, don't let it sit around too long because it'll start to get soggy. The fish was nice and moist, retaining a lot of juices. And the batter. You definitely taste the beer batter. I don't know what goes into it (Spotted Cow and something?) but this is quintessential bar food taste. Other fish fries, especially with the local Midwest fishes, tend to focus more on the taste of the fish, but to me the batter is what you're coming for here. The only thing I can really ding them about is that it's a little strong - they could easily cut down on the salt and probably halve the flavor on parts of the fish I had and it would still be awesome. And I don't even like beer! Something I didn't notice until the end was that there was also a bit of a kick - I really don't know what that might be. Ginger? It's intriguing. For a small town restaurant, it's still a full house on Friday night but you won't have the crazy waits like in Madison. And the fish fry is amazing. Definitely one of my new favorites in the area! read more

I finally had to check out this place right in my backyard (well, more the side yard to my backyard) because so many of my customers (I'm in local retail) told me that other locals (real locals, not 5-year locals like me) had recommended it highly. Apparently those real locals aren't on Yelp yet. But I am! Anyway, here's the deal: Type of place - Local Dive bar/restaurant What you should go for - Basic diner-style breakfast (my favorite is the biscuits and gravy - lightest gravy I've ever had that didn't make the biscuits stick in my stomach like paper mache. - Burgers for lunch or dinner. - Friday fish fry for lunch or dinner. Beer battered and served with your choice of fries OR baby red potatoes boiled and bathed in butter. - get yourself a local WI beer on tap while you're at it. The most popular is New Glarus Spotted Cow, but I like anything from Lake Louie. Pros - the food is diner-great, everyone's friendly, the prices are ridiculously cheap, and you can watch a sporting event on their TVs. Sometimes they have a meat raffle on Saturdays in the winter (they call it "Meat Paddles"; same thing). Cons - none that aren't inherent in this type of establishment. For example, long waits for Friday fish fry, a bar that isn't really suited to standing at (because there's tables right there), and loudness when it's crowded. AKA - Aunt Mary's Hooterville Inn. And yes, there is an "Aunt Mary", and she still works there. And the Hooterville name comes from Green Acres or something like that, not an excess of exposed breasts and country lodging. read more

Stopped by driving from colorado to Wisconsin for dinner. Food was great. Had chicken sandwich which had fresh veggies. I asked, they get them from local farm. (They saute the onions for me) Sandwich does not come with side, so I got the cheese curds, yum. And of course when in Wisconsin you have to get the spotted cow (beer). Went on a Saturday afternoon for the meat paddle. Staff was attentive, not in your face, but dont brush you aside either, food is cheap- definitely pub food- and most patrons friendly. Kind of got poked at for being newbies, but not sore about it. Long bar offers ample seating. I did not notice any electronic or other bar games (darts, pool and such) other than gambling machines far in the back corner. Only complaint about the meat paddle is that it is difficult to hear the number called out if you are on the opposite end of the wheel. This sadly causes the anticipation of winning to possibly be easily ruined by seeing someone else gleefully waving their stick. They also have Up Yours pull tabs which can be addicting and dangerous, but will win you $25 (I think). Another complaint is that it isn't year round :(. Id go again for the meat paddle or stop for one if driving through. read more

So my wife and I were looking for a decent fish fry that wouldn't break the bank. I visited a website that focuses just on fish frys in the Madison area. The Hooterville Inn was on there. I am glad that we decided to try it as the cod was delicious. The place is small and there isn't much in the way of dining room space. We had to opt for the bar as the tables were all taken. The fish came with standard sides, rye bread. Cole slaw or Cottage Cheese. Choice of baby red potatoes, french fries, or hash browns. I had the french fries, they were OK. The hash browns my wife had were pretty good though. This is a simple small town bar with some very good fish. It was well worth the drive from Middleton for us. read more

Incredible Friday Fish Fry! The cod was flaky and moist and the beer batter (made with New Glarus beer) was thin, crispy, and flavorful. The included sides were great and the portions were perfect. We stopped in today while riding bikes on the Military Ridge Trail and really enjoyed our visit. They have a nice selection of local beers on tap, and while we didn't eat, the food smelled and looked great! The 2 ladies behind the bar were super friendly and accommodating, and the other patrons were welcoming and friendly. Definitely worth stopping when you are in the area! Overall: ok Service: Servers were quite friendly but our server seemed more interested in flirting with another employee than waiting on us. Didn't refill drinks once. Food: -cod sandwich was quite good -burger was good -fries were good but unsalted -cheese curds were atrocious. Prepare frozen to begin with and cooked so long that the cheese came out and was crispy We've also eaten breakfast here once and it was a similar experience. We were in the area and asked someone local where the pizza place was. He said we were probably looking for Naked Elm Bakery but they are only open certain days and weren't open but Hooterville Inn makes great pizza he said. We decided to get one to go from Hooterville if it didn't take too long. I was hoping for something like 15 minutes. I walked in shortly after the fellow who recommended the place did. It was a cozy and inviting bar/restaurant. The music was not loud and people were quietly talking at the bar and sitting at a table enjoying some food. I interrupted the woman behind the counter while she was busy getting some food ready but she didn't seem to mind and was friendly, helpful and quick to take my order. I wanted it quick so I picked the first item on the main pizza list. Hooterville pizza with the regular toppings. She told me it would be about 25 minutes but I though, hey, if it's good pizza they need time to make it right. So I said ok and paid. 19 dollars for a 16 inch pizza. It was done exactly in the time she said. I believe the gentleman who made the pizza was right there when I picked it up and he said nothing but he seemed to sort of put out his chest in pride as I picked up the pizza and smiled as I proceeded out the door. Nonverbal communication is something I can be dead wrong on but this time I think I got it right. The pizza was very good. One of the best I have had in a long time. The crust had good flavor and not soggy. I would have liked it a little crispier but for dough lovers this would be the bomb. Chewy and done to perfection. There was a lot of cheese but not too much and everything was fresh and nicely laid out on the pie. I would not hesitate to buy one and in fact it was cheap for the quality. Thanks for great service for a couple that really wanted some food fast and thanks for making some quality food. Since this is my first time to Hooterville I can't vouch for other food etc but my first experience was very good and if I had more like it I would give them a five. read more
