I had the Pesto Chicken sandwich with a side of tater tots (many other side choices to choose from). The sandwich was very tasty, even the roll itself, but the chicken was a bit chewy. Stopped in for a quick lunch while traveling through the area. Had a Hoppa Loppa IPA and it was delicious. Ordered the black and blue burger with a side of cole slaw. The burger wasn't very big but it was delicious. The burger tasted flame broiled and the blue cheese was perfect. The Cole slaw was also very good, but again, not much of a serving. The lunch salads were terrific! Passing through Mt.Horeb how can you not stop at a place with a name like this! I dinged them one star because they didn't have many of the "featured dishes" show in the yelp review. No walleye, no fish tacos, but the salads were terrific! I had the Santa Fe salad with grilled chicken, and the portion was generous, it was nicely presented and really tasty. My wife had the soup and salad with black bean chili. Nice waitstaff, fun brewery atmosphere. The beer was cold, my son enjoyed his mini corndog kids meal. I decided to stop in on the way home to grab a drink and dinner at the bar. The atmosphere, food, and beer were great. It was a slow Wednesday night. Two people at the bar and three occupied tables. Unfortunately it took 20 minutes to close my tab. I was standing up by the bar after using the bathroom and selecting bottles of beer to take home. The bartender had to repeatedly go to the back to get alcohol that he had run out of and two servers were not busy. One was even eating pizza. I was patient even after he closed out a patron who asked after I'd already asked him to close my tab. This would have definitely been a five star review had the service been better. read more

It's also a restaurant but I did not have any food. I've eaten at the Grumpy Troll 3 different times and I absolutely love the food at this restaurant. And after being there 3 times it became one of my favorite restaurants. My favorite is the French Dip. It's definitely a great place to get a bite after a long day of hiking either at Blue Mound State Park or Governor Dodge State Park or after spending all day touring either at House on the Rock or Cave of the Mound Can't wait to return to the Grumpy Troll again in the future whenever I am in the area again. read more

Stopped in for lunch on a Saturday . We had to wait about 15 minutes for a table. I asked the server (Bella) what kind of lagers they had since this is a brew pub. She didn't know so I just looked at their draft list. Had their Captain Fred lager. Light and crisp with a 4.6 ABV but not outstanding. Menu has a good selection of BBQ,sandwiches,Quinoa Bowls and appetizers. I wanted to try their wings and asked what was their Nono sauce. She wasn't sure but thought it was similar to Nashville Hot. It was more of a spicey mustard sauce which was just ok. Also had the cheese curds which were good and a brisket meat pie which was pretty small but tasty. My wife who is gluten free had their burger of the month which came with pork belly on top on a bed of lettuce. Tasty but tasted more like bacon than pork belly. Service was slow and it was hard to get refills of ice tea or another beverage due to lack of enough servers. There are not many places in Mt. The food offerings are typical bar food items, cheese curds, burgers, etc. We tried the cheese curds and they were good, lightly fried. My husband had a burger, and sandwiches . My husband had a burger with fires and I tried the loaded baked potato with pulled pork. It was topped with cheese, tomato and green onions . It was supposed to come with a side of sour cream, but I did not receive it. Service was a bit slow , but so I did not bother asking for it. I'd really like to give them a higher score based upon the food and ambience, but service was average and their tipping suggestions were obscene. In addition these tip suggestions were based upon the total after tax. Excuse me? Tip should be calculated on the total before tax. Anything otherwise is outrageous. Also, please set your tip amounts to 15%, 18% and 20%. No one should be asked to pay 25% or 30%. That should be our choice to choose under custom. I'm tired of restaurants putting customers in this positions. The only good thing was that the server didn't hover over me while I calculated what 15% was. I think I sold this place short on my last visit. Although the cheese curds were good, they didn't appear to be freshly made, just taken from a frozen bag of goods. We, however, really liked the deep fried green beans. Not too many places off them, and I don't know why. They have a wonderful crunch on the outside with a soft and chewy green-bean taste on the inside. My wife, who doesn't like green beans, really likes these. We thoroughly enjoyed the Grumpy Troll burger. I liked that our server asked how I wanted it prepared. Even better, it was made to a perfect medium. This is a nice place to visit if you are from out of town. Plenty of food choices and the staff are friendly and fun. We stopped in during a football game and the locals and staff are all joking and having a good time. Service was quick, but we also showed up in the mid afternoon and there was not many people in house. Everyone at the table enjoyed their food and the beers brewed on site were very good. A nice variety of craft beers were available. As we were leaving a group of snow mobile enthusiasts came in to warmup. Probably a thing to expect in the winter months. read more

Our family tradition is that whenever we visit WI, we stop at the Grumpy Troll. We love this place! Last July we ate here twice, and both times it was exceptional. The waiting area kept the kids busy with the checker game. We sat near the bar, but were still pleasantly surprised how it was not loud. My husband and I ordered the three meats, and the kids ordered either chicken sandwich or chicken fingers from the kids menu. The kiddos meal were well portioned. We visited The Grumpy Troll for the first time this weekend and had a disappointing time. I'll start with a positive, we expected to wait a while for an early dinner on a weekend, but we were happily surprised to be seated sooner than our estimated 40 min wait time. Much of our negative experience was due to the restaurant being (from what we could tell) short staffed, so please keep that in mind as you read on. Half of our table's drink order was messed up (and never resolved), requested condiments were never delivered, and the waitstaff never checked on us. We had to flag folks down to order, to fix our order, and to check out. We were at The Grumpy Troll for a total of two hours due to the pace of service. If the food was spectacular, I don't think we would have minded the time spent in the restaurant, but it was just okay. Although the cheese curds came out super fresh and hot, they lacked flavor, and I wasn't a fan of the dipping sauce. One positive was our burgers were cooked the perfect temperature (medium). Another positive was the beer-battered fries, which were the BEST fries I've ever had at a restaurant. We're happy we tried the famous restaurant, but overall we would not recommend. read more

One of the worst dining experiences I can recall. Took the family here for a lunch after some kids sports. It wasn't very busy; mid - afternoon on a Saturday. Waited 20 minutes to order drinks. Our server was friendly, but underage so although he couldn't offer an opinion on the various beers, he could offer tastes. I'm not a beer fan but I did a sniff test a là wine tasting. One of the IPAs, a light one, smelled fruity and sweet, and the other I actually smelled a malty smell--what it actually made me think of was soy sauce. We started with an order of onion rings and they were good. For the main meal, I had their burger of the month, which didn't have a name but had caramelized onion, lettuce, and a Thai chili sauce. The burger was good but I was surprised it wasn't spicy at all. It's not something I asked, though, but if you're there in September 2022 don't be surprised yourself. I've been to The Grumpy Troll many times over the years and I've always enjoyed their food and drinks! I've tried their burgers, salads, bowls, and appetizers, and I've never left hungry. One of my favorite appetizers is the fried green beans with ranch. Recently I tried a salad with salmon and it was delicious! I couldn't believe how good the salmon was for being an added protein. The service is always pretty good but I've never had an outstanding experience. Excellent server. No artisan ciders available, very disappointing especially in the fall. "Homemade" root beer tasted watery. Pizza was good, nice crispy crust. Burger was fine. By the way it was Friday. So why the 5-stars ... because our server Melissa E. was tremendous. Smile on her face, a hop in her step and hustling ALL the time. Had a fantastic meal here! I posted photos from this meal so long about but I'm feeling a little Wisconsin homesick so I circled back to finally give some love to this great local business. We came on a semi-cold fall day for lunch and sat outside - it was a little chilly on a gloomy day but we dressed warm (it was out choice to sit outside). Even though we were outside, the staff was still attentive to us. We ordered the Reuben, beef stroganoff, and burger with chips. My favorite was the Reuben - plentiful pastrami on a rye bread with sauerkraut and melt cheese. I do wish there was a bit more sauce to bring it all home. The burger was standard - no complaints! The pasta portion was generous, a strong umami mushroom flavor in the sauce and little meatballs for the meat - over a nice treat but I would like the sauce to be thicker. As out of town visitors, we (party of 11 composed of 3 families and 5 kids) arrived and wanted to sit outside and we were told that the outdoor dining area was closed because there wasn't enough wait staff. That was fine. So we wanted to order carry out and we had to sit in the bar area to look in the menu to order our carry out. The manager/waiter very gruffly told us that we cannot sit there and "take it outside" even though we just needed a couple minutes to order food. We politely told him we only needed 5 minutes to make our decisions and order carry out and he angrily walked away. That was fairly rude but ah well, not a big deal, but it gets worse. We get our food and asked for utensils and told they have zero plastic ware, which is really unfortunate since half of us ordered food that requires utensils aka quinoa bowls. Initially, we were told we were SOL and implied that we stuck with our bowls eating out of fingers. It took some time (another 10-15 minutes) for them to find plastic forks. It took more time for the other 2 families to get their food making the delay even longer. Total time to order and finally everyone to get our carry out with the plastic utensils... 50 minutes. Now let's talk about the food. Burgers were good for those who ordered it, but there were issues with the other food items. Two people ordered the Rio Grande quinoa bowl was supposed to have black bean chili on top. Neither of the bowls had the chili in it so they ended eating a bowl of dry quinoa with some side fixings. One of the chicken wraps we ordered was good but waaaaayyyy too greasy. The fried cheese curds might have been good but after waiting 15-20 minutes for others to get the food, we ended up with lukewarm, not-so-crunchy-fairly greasy cheese curds. And the best part is we spent over $200 for this terrible experience. The only saving grace is that the manager refunded us the two quinoa bowls that were made without the black bean chili. So, fair warning to those wanting to do carry out here. As far as eating in, who knows.. we are from out of town and will look for something else if we ever are in that area. read more
