I was attending Polkafest in New Glarus and stopped in Glarner Stube to grab a drink. The place was bustling and I was hit with the sweet smell of red cabbage, which I love! I talked to a couple of ladies at the bar who said I had to come back to eat there for dinner and that's exactly what I did! My husband and I had dinner at 5PM at the bar. I ordered the Stube Salad and he had the Wiener Schnitzel with red cabbage and warm German potato salad. The salad was a very generous portion and the dressing was sweet and delicious. The Wiener Schnitzel was delicious!!! I ate half of my husband's dinner and I loved the cabbage and potato salad. Everything was great! Service was also friendly. I'm looking forward to going back! Also to note: we left a jacket behind and had to leave early in the morning the next day before the restaurant opened. We live about 2 hours away and I called the restaurant and they have the jacket. This restaurant in New Glaris Wisconsin caught our eye because it looked like an authentic Swiss restaurant. We ordered the Swiss fondue. It came with bread and for an extra up charge you could order a plate of vegetables as well. We had more than enough bread, and we ate most of the vegetables. I would've liked to have seen maybe broccoli or cauliflower instead of cucumbers and tomatoes. But that's just my personal choice. Service was very good. Lunch is pretty quick. Two of us had fish (Friday), one a traditional European dish, and another a pork sandwich. Only one of us opted to upgrade a side to the restaurant's specialty: Roesti. The Roesti was a very generous portion, so he allowed us all to try a bite if we wanted. Roesti is similar to hashbrowns, but 100% improved due to loads of Swiss cheese embedded within. I believe I may order this for my entire meal in the future. Another hint: the baked cod on Friday included two long, well seasoned filets. Probably enough for two, or take one filet home. Stopped in for a drink on a Friday before the dinner rush. We used to come here quite a bit over the years, but it's been a while. We asked to sit at the bar and sat behind the server stand. Unfortunately, the server repeatedly smacked into my mom's seat even though there was plenty of room. Wasn't a very comfortable vibe. We ordered a tap New Glarus beer and a vodka cranberry and were charged $17 ($8 and $9 respectively). When we asked to confirm, we were just told "tourist prices". Surprised we could even stop the bartender as he was busy tossing treats and ice cubes to a dog that was in the bar. I expect those prices in Milwaukee but not in New Glarus. The single most unaccommodating restaurant in a 3 week roadtrip through WI. The waitress said the only vegetables in the entire restaurant were corn and pickled cabbage that day and that they'd removed the vegetable plate and couldn't do anything for me. The only option presented was a house salad. $7 for romaine lettuce with 2 cherry tomatoes, 2 cucumber slices, 2 croutons, and 3 pieces of red onion. I was visiting New Glarus, and decided to dine in here. The menu was full of Swiss dishes. I started off with Cheese fondue. It was enough for 4-6, may be more if you are not a very cheese person. It was good. Roesti is a nice swiss twist on hash brown. It is a hashbrown pancake with a layer of cheese. Also was slightly oily. Perch filet sandwich was my favorite item though. Waitress voluntarily split it into 2 for us to share. Perch was fried crispy. There were some small bones though. Kids chicken strips and french fries were fried nice and crisp. read more

Cheese. Oh, the cheese! This is a smaller joint, so get there early, or wait (they are so worth the wait). The atmosphere is cozy and the staff were all super friendly. It was very clear the food was being made fresh. We had the fondue, cheese curds, and prime rib sandwich. Oh boy. I thought I was going nuts re-reading all the stellar reviews after a less than stellar dining experience here over the weekend. Thankfully I see that most of these rave reviews are from several years ago. The food was bland and just not great. Ordered cheese curds, roesti, and the Wiener schnitzel with red cabbage (and the roesti) as a side(s). Everything was barely edible. We each took a few bites, made faces at one another, paid our bill and immediately tossed the food in the trash. When we arrived, the restaurant was pretty empty--maybe 3 tables were seated. Our server was fine, checked on us a few times, but after the food came, we couldn't get her attention again as she was chatting. Another member in my party had to physically stand up and walk over to her in order to pay the bill, during which time she continued to just solely focus on chatting with her buddy. The food was bland. I don't believe a single drop of salt was used for the roesti. The Wiener schnitzel was oooook--slightly gamey, but that may just be me--a little seasoning would have helped cover the pork taste a bit more perhaps? The cheese curds were a lot. They were gigantic in size and the thick breading was a bit difficult to get down. And again--say it with me, salt! The ranch was also questionable. The red cabbage was awful. I couldn't inhale or breathe in while attempting to put a bite in my mouth otherwise I would immediately start coughing because of the amount of vinegar used. Disappointing overall--saw so many great reviews and was really hoping to have n enjoyable time, but ended up feeling sad that I paid for a full meal that I didn't want to eat because it didn't taste good. read more

We had lunch at Glarner Stube yesterday. Hubby and I always have the same thing............the Pork Schnitzel sandwich with grilled onions and herb butter and the roesti. As usual, they did not disappoint. I did notice this time that the onions on the sandwich seemed almost carmelized and I liked the flavor of those better than just "grilled". The little Swiss themed restaurant gave a real good vibe. The server was very welcoming & she helped decide our dish. Her suggestion was really good. We went for the dinner specialty, a sandwich & hot chocolate. A special mention to their soup of the day, beef stroganoff. Oh my, one of the best we've tasted ever. I visited this restaurant with a friend for purely nostalgic purposes. My second home growing up was in New Glarus and wanted to visit a place that reminded me of visiting my grandparents. Highly recommend the Glarner Stube for an authentic Swiss style meal. We opted for a cheese fondue and shared a reuben and finished our meal with a perfect slice of hot chocolate cake! This place is always great. The problem is getting a table, so we went on Saturday of Memorial Day weekend but without high hopes. It turns out that they didn't have a lot of couples, and a table for 2 was available. No wait!!! The food is excellent. When it's just my wife and I we'll split a weiner schnitzel, but when our whole family goes, I'll explore the menu. It's all good. The salad with their house dressing is remarkable. One of the main reasons we always visit NG! It's one of our families top 5 places to eat authentic meals. The fondue is always top notch and the small, quaint dining area is always warm and welcoming. This trip, me and the wife had a couples weekend and enjoyed the bar. Everyone was friendly and the bartender was extra entertaining tonight. She brought us into the conversations like we were just another local. Very fun! Top notch food, fair price for the quality that always exceeds expectations. Counting the days we can make it back! Came here just to try roesti (essentially hash browns with swiss cheese in the middle) and enjoyed it but found it to be kind of bland. It was interesting to try though, and they served quite a large portion size. Overall, even though it was pretty busy and crowded, the bartender was kind and helpful but the food did take quite a while. Recommend stopping here to try the European specialties and beer selection while you're in town, just don't think it was for me (as a vegetarian and not much of a beer drinker). read more

Not worth the time. The new owners are riding the coattails of the previous owners. Sat at the bar and had a drink. $28.00 for two rail drinks??? This is not a clean supper club. While waiting for a table we noticed how filthy the bar was. The back bar was disgusting and the things hanging on the wall were full of dust, I don't think it's been cleaned in years. We finally got seated and was asked if we wanted a drink. Shame on them for screwing the first time, but no way!!' We ordered our meal. I had a soup and salad for my sides. I was asked if I wanted that ahead of time. Well of course I did. I want to have it and finish eating it before my main meal comes. We sat for 10 minutes waiting and finally my salad and my soup came out at the same time. That was fine, but then immediately came out my main meal. Why could they not bring that out the 10 minutes I was waiting? I took a taste of my soup and it was the beef and mushroom. If you took Heinz beef gravy and added beef and mushrooms, you would have my "homemade" soup. Baked cod was good. Grilled Shrimp was good. Timing for bringing out the food was bad. Prices were too expensive for a dirty restaurant. They are banking on a cliental from Madison. Save your money on a well run restaurant. Plus their hours are ridiculous! read more

It had been years since we had eaten at the Glaner Stube - so long ago that back then they still had the giant urinal (with its own postcard!). We were in New Glarus on a recent Friday afternoon and we stopped in to see if we could get a reservation for that evening. They do not take them but warned us to come before 5pm if we want a table without a wait. Since we had plans in Madison that night we grabbed a table by 4:30pm! Indeed the place was packed by 5pm. I think I had a beer to start but the main attraction was the Friday fish fry. Two had the cod, I had the perch and one had the perch sandwich. The price for the perch dinner was pretty high but the serving was huge. Too much actually. All of the food was delicious. The fish fry was very light and beer battered - my preference. The side of German potato salad was very good but a bit different with much more liquid. The red cabbage good but tart. The rosti, which is an up-charge, was excellent with cheese baked into the center. Nothing like having two potato dishes as sides! The servers were very helpful and kept things moving. Love this place. It is some of the best food in the Midwest. I have travelled 5 hours out of my way just to eat here. Ignore the haters. It's a small restaurant that gets full quick. Sometimes that means it can be a bit difficult to navigate and may feel a bit claustrophobic. The bathroom is small. WORTH IT!! That's not what you're here for. It's the food! The sausage is outstanding and the quality of the mustard they serve with it is equally as good. The Roesti is a unique dish that will be hard to find elsewhere and the Swiss cheese they use in it is wonderful. And don't forget the soup. Unbelievably rich and might be mistaken for gravy. OMG get the cheese curds, fresh wisconsin cheddar and a light breading with an out of this world sauce accompanying. I had probably the best primevrib sandwich I've ever had. Not small slices of prime rib, but a whole piece beautifully marbled and seasoned.be sure to get the roesti. Hash browns with Swiss cheese inside. A friend ordered the sauerkraut as a side and I had to order some to take home. It's delicious sauerkraut, just tart enough, but not overly tangy and comes in a mustard cream sauce. Unbelievable. We waited at the bar for our table, sadly the drinks were watered down. For dinner we indulged in the fondue which was so overly salty. For main courses I had the Wiener schnitzel.
