We had a group of 9 and had a private room for seating, which was lovely. Lisa, our server, was friendly and attentive. A variety of foods were ordered and folks really enjoyed the French onion soup and Brie cheese appetizers. The trout presentation was appealing and tasty.

    Espresso to finish the night

Came to Galena for a short mini moon with my husband and decided to have dinner here based on the great reviews I've seen at yelp, tiktok and google, and we were not disappointed. Service was great from start to finish, they have a good wine selection, prices are fair, and mostly, the food was amazing. The onion soup is the best I ever had, and the steak was so tender and well marinated. We also had the foix gras, and the chicken, both incredibly good as well. We ended the night with a shot of espresso, a capuccino and the profiteroles, which were the perfect balance of sweetness and freshness. Will be coming back for sure!

    Pate and toast points

I wished we were more hungry so we could try more food. We had the pate with toast points yum. Tomato soup that was huge and one of the best I've had. Then the frites. OMG a huge order of super thin crispy fries that we had to take home . The best. The wine selection is extensive if you want a bottle. Service was outstanding.

    Wiener Schnitzel "breaded Veal Cutlet"

Service was amazing. Definitely get the schnitzel. The mussels hail from Prince Edward Island fresh and tasty. Spaetzle was bland and dry. Sauerkraut was very vinegary.

Outstanding dinner of Baked Brie, Pork Shank, Trout Almondine, with attentive and friendly table service by our server Wendi, on Friday evening July 18. Owner and chef Fred greeted us at the door of this quiet and elegant restaurant. Would absolutely recommend for a wonderful evening when in Galena.

Escargot cooked in butter, garlic, and brandy

There are a lot of places in the world to get food. It is always fun to see if there are hidden gems when going to destinations. Is Fritz and Frites one of those hidden gems (stars kind of gave that answer away...) here is my review: Ambiance Fritz and Frites is a cozy bistro that has out door seating. The place is well lit and the colors of the place was light which gave it a bright feel. There was a lot of noise but that was due to how busy they were with patrons. It is slightly small but I never felt like I was packed in with everyone else. Service Our server, Sara, did a tremendous job. She was friendly and not over bearing. She gave us recommendations and always checked on us to see if everything was going well. Not only did Sara do a great jo, the rest of the staff also did a wonderful job. It was to a point where the other staff member kept my drink full and had Sara feeling bad thinking that she did not check on my water. A nice little thing as well was that did give us 2 forks (one each for me and my significant other) without me asking for it. Food There is so much that I wanted to try. The food is of both the French and German faire. Here is what was ordered: Escargot The escargot was cooked with butter, garlic, and brandy. These little morsels were very tasty, and the hint of brandy gave a little sweetness to the escargot. We were recommend to order some bread, which was definitely the right choice because the butter, garlic and brandy sauce was delicious. It was also a milestone for my girlfriend since she has not had escargot before. I am glad she got to try this as her first. Chicken jaeger-schnitzel with red cabbage and speztel. - I got the chicken schnitzel. I was recommended to get the Jäegerschnitzel which was the breaded cutlet with a mushroom gravy. It was delicious. The gravy added to the whole dish and gave more depth of flavor. The red cabbage gave a nice acidity but had some sweetness to it. The spetzel was there to help with any over the top flavors, similar to what rice or noodles usually do. Everything worked together and very nice dish. Steak and frites - My girlfriend got the steak and frites. She let me try some and she definitely won with this dish. The streak she had was so tender that it melted in your mouth. They gave a lot of shoe string potatoes which she told me it what they do in France. What was also nice was that the steak dripping soaked up into the potatoes, which sacred like a sauce/dressing. Profiteroles - These little puff pastries are cut in half and has ice cream in them. They are also drizzled with chocolate sauce. These were a light dessert which were pleasantly ending for the end of the meal. My girlfriend got this... 7-layer German chocolate cake - Not sure what I was think here. Always a specifically when this large piece of cake comes toward you. The cake is delicious. It was moist and flavorful, but not too chocolate that it got you tired. The icing was nice and gave a good accent to the cake itself. The coconut gave a nice flavor and texture difference. I ate most of it but took the rest back to your living quarters because we had a magic show to visit and I did not want to pass out form too much food. Overall Food was great, Service was spectacular. We are definitely going here when we visit Galena again. We had a wonderful experience which leaves us with a problem. Do we venture to try something new or do we get the items that we throughly enjoyed?

I felt compelled to leave this review because exceptional service like hers deserves to be recognized. From the moment we sat down, Lexi was attentive, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable. She had an answer to every single question we asked -- not just about the menu, but about the business itself. She knew so much about Bread & Vine that I genuinely thought she might be the owner. That level of pride and understanding is rare and speaks volumes about her professionalism. What really stood out was how accommodating and engaging she was. She made thoughtful recommendations, not only for food and drinks, but also for other places to visit and things to do around Galena. It truly elevated our entire experience. Because of her suggestions and the way she described everything so well, we ended up ordering (and purchasing) more than we originally planned -- simply because we trusted her recommendations. Lexi is the kind of employee every business hopes to have. She represents Bread & Vine with confidence, warmth, and expertise. She absolutely deserves recognition -- and in my opinion, a raise -- for the way she goes above and beyond for guests. I hope she sees this and I hope this reaches someone as important as her. We'll definitely be back, and a big reason why is Lexi.

On a freezing Iowa night, this cozy, intimate spot was the perfect escape. The chef himself runs the entire show, only allowing 4-6 tables per evening, which makes the night feel personal, exclusive, and thoughtfully curated. We started with the wild mushroom soup, which was rich, velvety, and full of deep, earthy flavors--the kind of dish that warms you to your core. Then came the balsamic caprese salad, followed by the wagyu steak and fillet mignon, and honestly? One of the best steaks I've ever had. It was perfectly cooked, incredibly tender, and packed with that deep, buttery look richness you expect from high-quality wagyu. The chef knows how good it is, and the price reflects that--definitely a splurge-worthy meal. The atmosphere is unlike anywhere else in town. It truly feels like going over to the chef's house for dinner, where he personally prepares everything with care. The experience is elevated but never pretentious--you're enjoying fine dining-quality food in a relaxed, intimate setting. And the thoughtful touch of the owner sharing an $500 bottle of wine with all of the guests free of charge made the night even more special. If you're looking for a one-of-a-kind, intimate dining experience, Chez Grace is 100% worth it. Perfect for a romantic date, a special occasion, or simply treating yourself to an unforgettable meal. Just be prepared for the price--but trust me, it's worth every penny.

Unfortunately, the rest of the experience did not live up to the reputation or the price point. I travel extensively around the world and the U.S., and I dine often at high-end restaurants, so I consider myself someone with a refined palate. With that in mind, I found Goldmoore to be very overrated. My sea bass was very average--the sauce had clashing flavors that simply did not work together. Their signature Beef Wellington, which should have been the highlight, was disappointing as well. Even the vegetables in the medley had a strange aftertaste, almost as if one of them--or the garlic--was spoiled. Service was also underwhelming. Our server didn't explain the dishes, didn't check in to ask how things were, and the food took far too long to arrive. For a restaurant of this level, that's unacceptable. Dessert was the final letdown. It had a cheap taste and even some crusty, stale-like bits that reminded me of eating a cracker past its freshness. For a $200 bill, I expected much higher quality. My friend and I both agreed that we would have enjoyed a simple burger and fries in downtown Galena much more. Overall, the atmosphere and the host were nice, but the food and service fell far below the standard of a fine dining restaurant. Sadly, I was not impressed and would not return.

We were told our table wasn't quite ready, since we were early we planned on going to the bar 1st anyway. We decided to try the rooftop outdoor area. It was sooooo hot with no breeze & no shade as the sun was setting, but it was beautiful. We waited a little past when our resy was scheduled for our table, & we were seated in the front smaller dining room by a window (which is the nicer room) Bread & drinks came out & were good We ordered 2 dinners to share, the Beef Wellington & the Scallops. The Scallops was only 3 decent sized scallops that were good not great, with a few veggies (beets & carrots). If that was all I ordered I would've left hungry. For $49 probably should be 5 or 6 or throw in another side. We ordered the Wellington medium, she would've like to order med/rare, but I convinced her med would have a red center. it came out med/well with absolutely no red inside. That ruined it for my wife, so she took 1 bite & ate the Scallops & I was left to eat the dry boring Beef for $60 I know we should've sent it back or complained but that's definitely not our style. We also tried a raspberry ganache with a few little cookies in it (pictured) it was small but pretty good. Bill was almost $150 b4 tip The mansion, the drive thru the country & view was worth it, but food was a let down & not what we hoped for. Let my take a moment to mention how friendly the service was. At the bar and all the helpers, I can't believe how kind and friendly they were. Order a little or a lot they were there to serve. We found our way to Sardine after their recent nod in the NY Times, so we made a reservation for a Thursday evening and off we went! The location is stellar, not only is the space expertly curated to give a slightly elevated vibe, but it also provides a fish house-y feeling as the colors, decor, lighting and wood throughout lend themselves to a spot known for seafood. In addition to the interior, they are located right on the lakefront, which creates calming and gorgeous views from inside or outside! Before diving into the food, we landed on a few cocktails to start the night off with. The cocktail menu was well laid out with house and classic cocktails along with a section solely dedicated to tableside served Absinthe! We went with a classic and house cocktail respectively. I seemed to enjoy my Pimms Cup a bit more than my buddy enjoyed his Old Fashioned, but he made a pivot to a beer for his second drink, so all was saved! Food wise, as noted, they are seafood forward, but have a few other offerings for those land dwellers! The menu is not expansive, but it is robust in the areas of offerings from apps to oysters, salads to sides and of course entrees. For our starter, we went with the warm goat cheese, because I am currently obsessed with warm fancy cheese dip style dishes, no shame! The cheese came with grilled bread, however the bread was a bit hard and made enjoying the creamy texture and feel of the goat cheese complicated. I would have much preferred a softer variety of bread or toast, or a less grilled portion. For dinner once of us went seafood, the other steak. The swordfish was light, well cooked and delightful. The steak frites were a bit heavier with less components, but no less tasty! The mustard sauce served on the side was perfection and a perfect accompaniment. For a fairly plain dish, the simple preparation was good, and the fries were crisp and well seasoned. It was not the best steak frites I have ever had, but it was a steak dish from a seafood spot, so I respect it and still enjoyed it quite a bit! Service was stellar from entry to exit. Getting to the host(ess) stand can be a bit confusing as it is located in the middle of the restaurant, but once there, they take care of you! Our server was kind, friendly, helpful and a joy to interact with. Overall, Sardine was a great evening with a solid meal, good drinks, great service and a uniquely Madison vibe!
