My boyfriend and I went to Bread & Vine in Galena on January 22nd 2026, and we had the absolute pleasure of being served by Lexi (I did some digging on Facebook to find her because I wanted to make sure I got her name correct.) I felt compelled to leave this review because exceptional service like hers deserves to be recognized. From the moment we sat down, Lexi was attentive, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable. She had an answer to every single question we asked -- not just about the menu, but about the business itself. She knew so much about Bread & Vine that I genuinely thought she might be the owner. That level of pride and understanding is rare and speaks volumes about her professionalism. What really stood out was how accommodating and engaging she was. She made thoughtful recommendations, not only for food and drinks, but also for other places to visit and things to do around Galena. It truly elevated our entire experience. Because of her suggestions and the way she described everything so well, we ended up ordering (and purchasing) more than we originally planned -- simply because we trusted her recommendations. Lexi is the kind of employee every business hopes to have. She represents Bread & Vine with confidence, warmth, and expertise. I really enjoyed my late lunch of appetizers. There were 5 of us and we decided to split 3 appetizers and that was enough for all of us. We started with mini sliders. They were so delicious. The meat was tender and the grilled onion and tomato were the perfect toppings. The burgers were well seasoned and juicy. The next appetizer was a Cuban croquette. These were not our favorite but they were crunchy and interesting, just not for us. The last item we got was a flat bread pizza with bacon and fingerling potatoes. It also came with a chili oil that you could add if you wanted. The bread was really good and the bacon potato combination was a unique flavor combo I would never have thought of. It was very good. The chili oil was very spicy but a nice accent to the pizza. bread & Vine is an adorable little restaurant with a lot to offer. They have sandwiches and desserts available to go or to enjoy in the restaurant, along with a menu of items to enjoy hot at the 12 or so tables. This place is probably best known for its bakery items / desserts, but we had lunch there earlier this week. I would recommend the place as our meals were quite good. I got the Greek Gyro which came on naan bread. I loved the roasted lamb meat and thought the meal was great. My husband got the special Crab sandwich w/ fries. We came here for lunch on a girl's trip and really enjoyed it. We kept seeing info about trying the creme de violet cocktail, so had to give that one a go. I ordered the frozen aperol spritz but was given a frose, which was also on the menu. The same thing happened to one of the gals in my group. It was packed inside and I'm not sure the waitress heard me say frozen Aperol spritz, so she just brought a frozen drink. It was a lovely drink, so I didn't ask for a replacement. I ordered the steak sandwich, which was really good with Brie and pesto! I wish the steak was better, it was very overcooked and tough but a nice sandwich nonetheless. Ate here on a Saturday night. We walked right in and sat at a table near the bar. It's a cute place very reminiscent of a french bistro with pastry case up front. Loch was our server and he was excellent- made the most perfect whiskey old Fashioned. Our best during our stay in Galena. He recommended the pizza and the wagyu burger and fries. The four of us split the pizza and two burgers. We had the goat cheese and honey flatbread - it was a crispy crust and the toppings were plentiful. It was a good appetizer for us. We were glad we split the burger it was a good size and delicious as well as the fries. Loch was an excellent server and made our evening perfect. Repeat visit at the behest of friends. Food doesn't appear to be prepared on the site. I did have the salmon croissant which was tasty and the cucumbers were fresh and crunchy. The friends loved the Croque monsieur, Parma and quiche. Portions substantial. Service was provided by one person, Dave! The other person stayed at the bakery section except when she refilled our water glass. He did his best accommodating a few large crowds. I give him credit because they included special cocktails with the food. All in all food and drinks are good. Seating is tight if you have more than 3 people in your party unless you're just having a drink. Management however needs to revisit service. If hiring is not in the budget the bakery person could share some of Daves responsibilities. read more

A Galena must stop! I've tried everything here from the coffee to the parties to the sandwiches and breakfast. The only thing lacking is the coffee - they can only do black coffee or unflavored drinks. The line can be long but moved very fast! The service team knows what they're doing! Bread and vine is a dainty spot located in downtown Galena. The decor is lovely and pleasing to the eyes, it's super cute! There are lots of indoor seating and they do have the option to order items and take them to go. They offer desserts, pastries, sandwiches, salads and cocktails. My fiancé and I tried the smoked salmon croissant and that was delicious. I could eat that everyday! We also tried the new York cheese cake and that was meh. Tasted a few days old, wasn't very fresh and the lemon was over powering. For drinks my fiancé tried a pomegranate mojito and I thought it tasted too artificial and overly sweet. This place is GREAT!! The food: amazing. I ordered the goat cheese salad and it was so delicious. A friend ordered a prosciutto flatbread (and the only sore spot was that it didn't seem to have prosciutto) but it was also good. The truffle fries were delicious and though I was too full for dessert, I heard it was excellent. The server was kind and humorous and it had a nice, family feel in there. The staff is lovely, attentive and personable. We each had a peach froze and OMG was that a delicious drink!! Me and my SIL shared a cheese board and a charcuterie board for a lighter mid-day nibble. Perfection on two boards. I wish they had both cheese and meat on one board but that just a small criticism. Every spread, cheese and meat was absolutely delicious. My mom and I were in Galena for one night. We came to Bread and Vine the first day and loved it so much we came back again the next day before we left! Service was fabulous. Cocktails were delicious, especially The Empress. We had a cheese board both days and a veggie quiche the second day. All of the food we had was excellent. What a delightful surprise! From what I had experienced while vacationing in the area, this was very much a midwestern meat and potatoes kind of town. Then low and behold, my party of seven stumbled upon this place while walking down the street. It was so different than any other place on that stretch. It's sophisticated, creative, very Euro, but unpretentious and inviting. We felt welcomed even with four kids in tow. Our servers were patient and kind with us while we encouraged our kids to try mussels and guided them toward kid friendly options. They were also incredibly accommodating with our food allergy daughter who didn't want to be left out from sampling the beautiful desserts. Dropped by while in town as a late afternoon was snack and it was very tasty! Had their apple strudel pie looking bite and it hit the spot! We also had a couple of macarons which were equally delicious! We accompanied these treats with some tea and an espresso. The space is bright and very happy. Holy macarons! This place- THIS PLACE!! If you're in Galena and you don't visit this place, you've missed out!! Downtown Galena is beautiful at at all times and with all the selection of restaurant and stores, it's hard to choose where to go first! The selling point for me for bread and vine were the European style display of pastries and sandwiches which is uncommon to see in mainstream malls in America. As soon as I saw they had cappuccinos on their menu, it was a no brainer for me! Due to the high traffic this restaurant sees, there's a 8/10 chance that you won't find a place to sit but if you wait about 10/15 mins you may get lucky. We found sitting right away (beginners luck) and literally the moment we sat down, the server came with water and a menu. I ordered the steak sandwich which was a baguette filled with grilled marinated flank steak, pesto, carmelized onions and Brie cheese. I wanted to order the Moroccan sandwich but we were advised that the lamb sausage was encased in pig intestine and well, I don't eat pork so that was no thank you for me but let me tell you, it looked delicious! My sandwich was out of this world- I would order it everyday for breakfast, lunch and dinner if BRead and vine were any closer. The food was fresh, it was so tasty and just what I needed on that super cold day. fMy husband got the lobster bisque soup and he was blown away. He said he'd never had better lobster bisque in his life which I understand where he's coming from because not only was it tasty as a soup, you can actually taste bits and pieces of the lobster. We've been to a lot of restaurants that offer lobster bisque and sometimes you can taste everything but the lobster so the fact that we can see and taste the lobster was a testament to the quality and service of bread and wine. We. Loved. This. Place. We were in town in August to celebrate our anniversary, and we visited Bread & Vine 3 times! As fate would have it, we were looking for a place to nosh and have some wine on our first night, and Yelp came to the rescue. We were pleased to find such a comfortable, relaxed place in downtown Galena. Not pretentious at all, just delicious well prepared food at a reasonable price. The first night, we had the Greek gyro, the pear and goat cheese salad, the charcuterie board, and the Caesar salad. All was delicious and fresh. We had some good drinks as well. I think I ordered a red wine. The next day, we came back for breakfast - it was also very good. I think we had cocktails, since we were on vacation, day drinking was okay. We had our same server from the night before, David, and he was such a pleasure to converse with. On our last day in town, we stopped in again, this time for coffee and a pastry before hitting the road to go home. Elena, our server, made us delicious cappuccinos and warmed our almond croissants to the perfect temperature. As a native of the area, she also made great recommendations on places to visit and suggested we take the back road to Route 20 to enjoy the scenery. We followed her advice and took Stagecoach Trail to the end and then went north into Wisconsin to enjoy the scenic route all the way back to Illinois. It was a fantastic drive. The food here was good, it's centrally located on the main shopping street, and it has a very cool European vibe. We were able to get a seat at a table at lunch during the week, but it was absolutely packed on the weekend (September). I'm knocking off a star because the seating is very cute but impractical. There were 4 of us around such a small table that we had to strategically position our knees to fit, and I was touching backs with the lady behind me. What a wonderful find in an overly touristy town. With the French cafe feel and the eclectic menu of mouth watering entrees and desserts I recommend to come hungry AND thirsty.
