I had honestly never heard of Gladstone's, but after looking at their website, I thought I'd give them a try. I really came in here with no expectations. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in. I absolutely loved the atmosphere and was glad to see there was separate bar area. The breakfast menu has the typical items, but I was in the mood for the Basic Breakfast. I went with the bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, and toast. My mom decided on the Veggie Omelet. I was surprised neither of us got the Chicken Fried Steak. We both enjoyed a couple of Bloody Mary's. Always a good addition to a Sunday breakfast and they tasted great. Honestly, this was a great breakfast. The bacon and eggs were cooked perfectly. The bacon was a little thicker. It wasn't the see thru bacon you get from the chains. The hashbrown were golden brown. The omelet tasted great as well. If you're looking for higher end breakfast food on Alberta in Portland, maybe this isn't the place. But if you're looking for a good breakfast, Gladstone's doesn't disappoint. I'm sort of a snob about hash browns, and they came out nicely. $17 for steak and eggs, $16 for chicken fried steak. Points worth noting: gravy was flavorful; which sometimes can be a weak point on CFS, but they used enough salt and it was good! Hasbrowns were ordered as extra crispy; and they came out nicely. Could have even been more crispy but they were not soft on the outside which I appreciated. Steak is tender, medium rare is good to order it. Last Saturday my parents and I had a late breakfast/brunch at this charming restaurant. It was my first time eating here, and the food, service and atmosphere were all very charming and very comfortable. My mom and I had the pancake breakfast special. For $10 we received two eggs, bacon or sausage and two very delectable pancakes. I opted for the sausage and the texture and flavor were homemade and authentic. I didn't ask, but previous experience with breakfast sausage leads me to believe that it was homemade, or at the very least a special blend for Gladstones. The portions were more than filling, and the service and atmosphere was extremely friendly and overall the noise level was definitely within conversation range. Came in here on a Friday just after the lunch rush and there were plenty of seating options. We were greeted right away and said we could sit wherever we'd like (even though there was a sign as you entered that said "Please wait to be seated"). Our greeter and server were polite, welcoming and friendly and not in a fake way. We ordered the smash burger, and shrimp tacos. The burger was a good size, not too big or small (it is a double patty, keep that in mind) but I felt the patties could have been more "smashed". It was very filling, and it was quite hot for the first couple of bites, I think because of the grilled onions. It was also greasy/messy but I think sometimes that's a sign of a good burger. Hard to go wrong on tots so not much to say there. Husband said his shrimp tacos were pretty good (seems kind of surprising since on the surface this place is a bit a "local bar"). And the esquite (elotes in a bowl) side was delicious to me, he only ordered it for me haha. The restaurant was clean, bathrooms too. Food's okay. Service was originally okay, but I would change it to either worn-down or in the case of the manager, spineless. Went in, didn't realize there was a big sports event earlier in the day. Just needed dinner and it was the only place open in the area. Large group of loud drunks in front, and this is an open concept bar, so you couldn't escape the noise, even though we sat as far away as possible. Meatballs were good, pasta sauce on my entree was runny, but okay. Iced Tea is terrible. Drunks were super loud, and comments to the server, who was being harassed by them, didn't get anything in terms of asking them to take it down just a notch or two. My dining companion went over and asked them to quiet just a little, because I was getting a headache that could turn into a migraine. They didn't like the request, but they did end up not quite as loud, which I thought was nice of them. A couple other folks in the bar said thanks or nodded at my companion on the way to restroom, so we weren't the only ones being annoyed. We left, my companion wished the remaining drunks a good night, left on friendly terms with them, and we were at the corner before the manager popped out of the bar and told us not to come back, because we harassed her patrons. When it was pointed out they were obnoxiously loud, she dismissed it as being part of a bar, and we should have come to her. Sorry, I don't go chasing down a manager, and your server was up to her backside in tasks. Also, if she didn't relay our multiple complaints to you until after we left, that's telling. The manager could have approached us at any time too and relayed her dissatisfaction. Waiting until we were halfway down the block was silly. First strike was when they served us cold clam chowder, no exaggeration it was room temp. The waiter offered to heat it up and I couldn't hide my expression while I told her it's not food safe. Either she served us a bowl that had been sitting out or it wasn't kept at a safe temperature... both scenarios are not good. Another time we came with our nieces and the high chair was absolutely filthy, no one has ever wiped those down. We ordered a kids burger and it came slathered in mayo! Kids burgers are always dry, and the menu never mentioned mayonnaise so we couldn't have known to make a special request. My autistic niece wouldn't eat it and we realized why. We ordered a new one and it took 45 minutes to arrive! We asked for it to go after waiting a half hour and it still took another 15. She had to eat it in the car because we had to leave! We've been going here ever since they opened. At the very least 3 times a month and never had a bad meal or service. My husband always gets the blackened Shrimp Ceasar and craves it like mad because it's so good. He even loves the garlic toast, he's not a bread person so that means something! I love the chicken Alfredo, shrimp Tacos, gouda mac n cheese and the smashburger. The biggest surprise? Their chicken strips! Omg, they are so good, fresh and perfectly seasoned every time! What a refreshing reset this place received! The new owners did a great job of revamping the dining area and menu. My family and I were very excited to try them. We got the tacos, Mac n cheese, and pulled pork on a GF bun since my boyfriend does not eat gluten. Everything was incredible. I got the carnita tacos to share with my daughter and an al a cart veggie taco. They were wonderful. The veggie taco is filled with cauliflower and other seasonal veggies and cooked in a flavorful chili oil. The mac n cheese was huge and comes with bacon. Good variety of food though, but it's definitely just pub fare. The Mexican food is the best out of everything in my opinion. I honestly miss the hot dogs that Happy's had before. Their specials and happy hour are great as well. Ambience is good, although the people behind us were dropping f bombs like crazy, so not super great in a family friendly place but you can't really help that. While the service was fantastic for a to-go order, the food was not great tonight. I live 3 minutes away so the freshness wasn't an issue. However, whatever they put in the Smoked Gouda Mac & Cheese that is almost like a strong garlic/truffle oil, I got way too much in mine. To the point that it made it inedible unfortunately The chicken Alfredo is a bit mediocre but has room to be good if the recipe is tweaked a bit. Best thing by far was the garlic bread. I almost NEVER leave bad reviews because I think it's just usually cheap people wanting free food. However, this one is being written because it's totally the restaurant manager and owner's fault that they let food like leave the kitchen. I had never eaten here, saw a great review for the prime rib dip, so gave it a whirl. Wow. That was the worst sandwich I have ever had, well almost. The menu describes this as "prime rib dip", what I got was thinly sliced, overcooked crispy beef, that tasted like and looked like skirt steak. Zero fat marbling, and tasted burned. The menu describes this item as being served on a "brioche hoagie roll" this was served on a hot dog bun. So, for $18+ dollars, I got a hot dog sized bun, with skirt steak. Finally, the menu said served with "au jus". I'm not sure what you think au jus is, but grease floating on top of pan drippings is not it. At least half of this "au jus" was grease. Fun fact, au jus should not contain that much grease and should have flavor! So after leaving a tip for the server who took my order and was awesome, I got to eat French fries with ranch for my $22.45. No I don't want a free meal. I don't a refund. Just stop serving this stuff and or charge a price commensurate with a skirt steak dip on a hot dog bun. This didn't even rise to the level of French dip! Charging that much money for such an inferior product is really just ruining your reputation. People will catch on. Delete this if you want, word of mouth travels fast, and I've already warned off my entire office (that's just down the street, btw). Do better. read more
