I've worked with Gary on four completed projects and am currently working with him on a fifth, which probably says more than anything else I could write. Three of those projects were on a 1920s Spanish triplex, where we modernized all the units while preserving its original character, including converting a three-car garage into an ADU. We also fully renovated a mid-century ranch duplex and are currently converting its garage into another ADU. Gary's extremely easy to work with, communicative, reliable, and cares about the quality of his work. He'll give you his professional opinion when needed, but he listens to what you want and never tries to push his preferences over yours. His subs are solid, his pricing is reasonable, and he's always been accommodating when little extras come up outside the original scope. After five projects together, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him. Finding a contractor you trust and actually enjoy working with isn't easy, and that's why I keep hiring him. read more

This is the second house we've had renovated by Gary. This house was outdated and unattractive but we knew it could be special. We are always happy with Gary's work. He is a competent professional and trusted contractor with a solid team of subcontractors who have been doing this work for decades. With this renovation, we brought our 1912 Craftsman bungalow down to the studs. This was a full-gut renovation that involved replacing all mechanicals, drywall, new bathrooms, new kitchen and doing a primary bath addition. With Gary's construction expertise, we were able to restore the home while maintaining its original charm and bring our design to life. Some of Gary's many contributions included framing a new tray/drop ceiling, installing custom window and door casings to match the originals. He also rebuilt the front porch railings and reinforced the porch ceiling so it would accommodate a porch swing. He built our backyard studio shed in just a couple days and it's adorable. While nearly everything is new, you can't tell. And that is a compliment to the quality of craftsmanship. Gary doesn't cut corners and it shows. It is very important that you trust your contractor and that they have integrity and do what they say they are going to do. Experience is also very important. Gary has all of this. We will definitely be calling Gary for the next house we buy. We can't recommend him enough. read more

I had a fantastic experience working with Gary and his crew on our ADU build. From start to finish, they were responsive, transparent, and clearly knew what they were doing. Gary explained every step and always made sure I understood the process before moving forward. This is key because it prevented any surprises through the process. Believe me I had a fair share of those experiences. The craftsmanship turned out excellent and the whole project was completed on schedule. I couldn't have asked for a better partner on any construction needs! read more

I discovered many issues over the years that will cost me money, all connected with the plumber on the job.

Gary is wonderful. He came out to check our framing, and explained everything in great detail. He is honest, and wants to make sure you understand what you're asking about or looking at. Will definitely be using him for more work. read more

This is our third wonderful experience working with Gary. He did our addition in 2020 (we reviewed him and his work back then) and we called him again to create a little window seat/coat area which was a closet before off the front entrance. That was back in 2022. He created the arch, built the bench, patched up the areas and then he came back when I realized I gave him the wrong bench height. Pictures below. A few weeks ago we called him to fix issues that another contractor made on our garage. Gary was unavailable for that job, if not we would have gone with him. It was a simple enough job that was carelessly done and Gary came in to fix it. Once again, he came when he said he was going to come, for the price he quoted, finished early and with integrity. read more

What an absolutely refreshing experience. I worked with Gary and it was a night and day experience from the previous contractors I worked with. The true definition of punctuality: from getting the quote, to obtaining permits to completing the project. I hadn't done something so large in size before and I truly feel like Gary's experience and talent helped make it seem like a breeze. Can't wait until the next one! read more

Gary did a great job repairing the upper balcony on our 1928 house. The support beams had deteriorated. He had lumber specially milled to match the original beam. He replaced the flooring and the upper beam that supports the roof. It was quite a job and required a good measure of skill. This also required stucco work that matched perfectly to the existing. Gary has excellent knowledge of these old homes. Once he started he was there working on the project everyday. No breaks and competed the job quickly with not gaps in the work. His crew was very professional. Richard read more

Gary is wonderful. I had another renovation to do for my mother so of course I trusted this to Gary. As always, he was prompt, fair, and thorough. He converted a bathtub to a walk-in shower, replaced carpet with all new flooring, along with many other general fixes. Not to mention the nice touch-ups that needed to be done, that I didn't even think to ask about. So that's a total 3 renovations and a brand new construction ADU) from GK General Construction. Highly recommend you reach out to Gary. You will not be disappointed. read more

Gary and his team worked with us on two different projects for us where he and his team transformed an old closet space into a cozy nook with a daybed and built in shelving. The team was always punctual, professional, and detail-oriented, and we couldn't be happier with the result. Gary was a pleasure to work with and we look forward to our next project with him! read more

Older homes are special, they hold lots of memories and are an endless opportunity to provide general maintenance. We recently had a small bathroom that needed a lot of help, painting of vintage kitchen cabinets and the installation of new interior doors. We weren't sure if our project was "big enough" but our first call was to GK General Construction (GKGC). The owner Gary, listened to what we needed to repair, was respectful of our small budget and did not try to upsell us to redo the entire kitchen. How refreshing! The gentlemen that GKGC had work in our home, are real craftsmen! The tile is beautiful and all the tile joints subtlety blend together. The kitchen cabinets had not been "loved" since the 1930s, but after GKGCs painters worked on them, the cabinet finish was perfect and worth every penny! We are so happy we chose GKGC to work on our home again! read more

We had damage to our garage roof from a tree limb that fell on it due to high winds. It was great working with GK. The owner (Karan aka Gary) was very easy to work with and for the initial estimates was prompt to the appointment. Karan provided a reasonable estimate and we had a good discussion about the work. When I finally had approval to do the work from the insurance company, Karan quickly responded to my request, we had another meeting to review details about the job, and he was able to commit to a time for the work. The work was done faster than expected. The quality of the work is excellent from what I can tell. It's really great when you can find a contractor who can do smaller jobs, is reliable and does high quality work on time. Highly recommended! read more

I tried working with many companies; however, GK General Construction was the only one that could truly help me. Everything turned out exactly as Mr. Gary promised. I'm so happy that I found out about GK General. Mr. Gary did an amazing and clean job, and my family is very happy with the service we received and the overall results. It was very easy to communicate and stay in contact with Mr. Gary. Our bathroom looks wonderful. Thank you so much for everything! read more

We hired Gary for a full house remodel in Eagle Rock. We replaced everything. Gary was professional from start to finish. Finding an honest and competent contractor is tough. I get tense just thinking about it. We interviewed so many contractors. Some were unprofessional and others were extremely overpriced. Not Gary, he was fair and direct from the beginning. There were no surprises with him. Gary is honest, hardworking, and does what he promises. He's open to ideas and communicated any time he had a question or needed clarification. His subs are all very experienced and professional. They do not cut corners and they stand by their work. Our only regret is that we didn't meet Gary sooner. It's such a relief to work with a professional like Gary. The house turned out beautiful and the workmanship was excellent. The house was even featured in the New York Times. If Gary is available, hire him! read more

I contacted GK to adjust door frames around my condo, including the front door, replace baseboards, and install a ceiling fan. Gary arrived on quick notice and gave me fair quotes without any fancy paperwork, which left a good impression on me, knowing he's a genuine guy. ! The work requested was done within a week, and the final invoice matched the original quotes from our initial walk-through. Gary and his crew even touched up a few things around the place during the work without charging! Gary was a pleasure to work with, and I highly recommend his services. read more

Quick follow up update. We worked with Gary again to repair the "garage" in the rear of our property. I use garage loosely because it was more like a shack that was leaning over with a leaky roof and doors that had to be propped up with sticks. Gary and the crew worked their magic to repair the framing, install a new roof, windows and new siding to match the house. The fact they were able to salvage it without tearing down is astonishing. Now it looks like a lovely extension of the house instead of a creepy shack - 11/10 would build again. read more

Called in the morning, the gentleman (I guess Gary) was immediately curt and seemed somewhat annoyed. Being an army veteran, directness does not bother me. He then asked for pictures of the potential job: I needed a carport assembled and set in concrete. I did as requested and texted him several pictures of the space and pre-fabricated carport. He then said he only got one picture, then corrected himself, then said he would call me back... Didn't call me back till almost 8 o'clock at night to say "I'm not interested. " Gave no explanation why. I told him of my urgency for this project earlier and he basically wasted a whole day of my time. Not cool. read more

We had an amazing experience working with Gary and his team on our home remodel project. From start to finish, our experience was seamless. What was very important to us which GK General Construction excelled at as well was communication and timelines. Quality was also sound and being a picky person myself, I was absolutely pleased with the quality of work from floors, to the moldings, countertops and beyond. Thank you for making everything so easy for us and making our visions into reality! read more

I just don't know where to begin. From the moment Gary came by for an estimate, I just liked his vibe. He seemed honest and down to earth. My intuition didn't fail me. He remodeled both of my bathrooms from A to Z and I couldn't be any happier. My bathrooms are small but he didn't fail to bring my vision to life. All his team were so nice and amazing. They started on time every single day and never missed a day. A few things happened along the way when my products came damaged but that didn't change anything as far as schedule since they continued to work around it. From demo, to plumbing, to tiling, etc. I am happy with everything and my experience was seamless. I am very picky and indecisive and they continued to deal with my craziness. I am just so happy with the results and will definitely recommend them to my friends and family. Now that the projects are over, I feel like I will miss them dearly as they became part of my daily routine. read more

This is soley based on the estimate visit. I found Gary to be not professional and rude. I had sent pictures through yelp and set up an appointment to get an estimate. He arrived on time and I started to tell him about the residing project. As we started to walk around, he said "no I don't want the project" and just walked off with no explanation. My partner thought that was very rude and yelled to him "why (amongst other things)". Gary then said something about windows being replaced which we never said. Basically he was making assumptions about the job without asking questions. I understand it's his prerogative and it's his business, but why waste my time and not be professional? We've had other reputable contractors come and provide us with good information, estimates, etc. Gary later called me back and to give me an explanation and said he could take the job in the summer. What?! Then later after I posted the review he texted 2 times apologizing with more explanation and requested me to remove my review. I would say don't waste your time on someone who can't communicate. read more

Karen (Gary) and his team were all amazing. When I called him for an estimate, he showed up within an hour and gave us a fair estimate. They did our roof, some stucco work, new front stairs and painted my entire house. They finished everything as planned and in a timely manner. As others have mentioned, I had an emergency where part of my deck collapsed out of nowhere. Gary was able to come over a day later for a quote and to begin work the day after--work done in two days!
