I've tried to contact the restaurant directly regarding my awful experience during brunch on Sunday, November 9, however when I called I was put on hold for 10 minutes and then disconnected. They do not currently have an email listed on their website, so I'm taking to Yelp.
DO NOT EAT HERE. My boyfriend and I had 2 guests in town and we took them to what we thought was 42 N Latitude for brunch, only to discover that the restaurant had changed to Gideon Wells. We decided to stay and were excited to try a new Lincoln Square brunch spot--we greatly regret that decision and will not be returning. Once we were sat, it was 15 minutes before we were greeted by a server and then took another 15 before we received water and our drinks. (I should note that the restaurant was not busy at all.) About 30 minutes later (after having been seated for nearly an hour), 3 of the 4 meals were delivered. After being told that the 4th meal was on its way, the server then returned to tell us that there were no poached eggs available for the eggs benedict that I had ordered, but they do have scrambled eggs available that they would substitute. A few things on this:
1. Why did it take until all 3 other meals were delivered for this to be mentioned? If this had been brought to my attention earlier I would have been happy to order a different meal.
2. Poached eggs are the central ingredient in eggs benedict, substituting scrambled eggs is a very odd option, especially when this is the only option given.
3. How is it possible that they could offer scrambled eggs but not poached? The only explanation I can think of is that they pre-make their scrambled eggs, much like a fast food establishment. Gross.
The server then mentioned that if I wanted poached eggs she could bring them out later when they arrived (?), and at this point I was hungry and the rest of my party was politely waiting for my meal to arrive so I agreed. My food was brought out with scrambled eggs on top of the "benedict". I removed them and ate the side dish hoping the poached eggs would arrive in time to eat the benedict. 25 minutes passed, my food became cold, and the rest of my party was nearly finished with their meal when we noticed that other tables that had been sat long after we arrived were being served eggs benedict---complete with poached eggs. I politely asked our server if she still planned on bringing mine and she said, "oh yeah, I'll go get those for you." This might as well have been a joke, since the rest of my party had already completed their meals and our table had been cleared.
My biggest regret is how well we responded to this situation; I was a server years ago and have great patience when things don't go right, however this was ridiculous and I wish I had been more assertive. As an "apology", the server discounted my meal from $12 to $6. Bare minimum the one dish should have been comped considering it was incomplete and cold. Another regret is that I still tipped the server...not nearly as well as I usually tip (30%) but she did not deserve anything for the lackadaisical way she attended our table.
We would have been totally fine with the mishap if it had come with an apology or any recognition that they messed up; things go wrong, and if they are handled professionally it really doesn't matter to me. This was a joke.
So, 2 hours and $100 later we left unsatisfied. Lincoln Square has an abundance of delightful brunch spots---this is not one of them. read more
