Over 100 years old, and it doesn't appear to have been updated much since then, but honestly that's what makes this place authentic and the perfect classic Chicago Dive Bar. In the modern world of $20 cocktails, craft double imperial IPA's with names like "a pidgeon's nightmare", sometimes all you want is an affordable ice cold miller light, play some pool, and watch some College football on a massive TV. The clientele clearly come to this traditional watering hole to make new friends, strike up fun conversations, and maybe throw back a few whiskey neats along the way. Don't expect an "instagramable" neon sign to take a picture in front of, but you'll find a no-nonsense bartender who will get you a cold one and listen to your life story. Has a pool table and everything. The drinks are the main thing, and it's a good place to get away from crowds and not care about looking cool and stuff. A total neighborhood bar. It probably has the same group of regulars here almost daily. They won't turn you away just because you aren't from around here though. Always happy to take your money in return for a drink. It's about $6 for the cheapest stuff. Basically it's just a place to drink. There's some snacks like chips or pretzels. For sure it's not the cleanest but it's not a dump. Stopped in for a nightcap with my boyfriend over the weekend and was shocked to see the bartender not wearing a mask. When I asked about last call timing, she droned on about the new operating hours being "ridiculous," and that "masks don't work." My obvious response was to immediately ask her to close out the tab, to which she rolled her eyes and said, "I can wear the mask if you want" sarcastically. I've always thought it was a pretty cool spot until this weekend. As a Phish fan, I was into the support this bar gave the band. Needless to say, there are plenty of establishments in the neighborhood to support - I don't think it's smart to give money to somewhere that doesn't have the public's best interest in mind. I was invited by a friend to a free comedy showcase that occurs every Thursday night. So I was not familiar with this place at all. However, when I rolled up in my uber. I knew this couldn't be it. I thought this place is a complete dive bar! But I ended up staying until 2 am and meeting the strangest and most intriguing people from what I heard patrons call, "The Village". I've heard about these mysterious neighborhood bars where everyone knows your name and you just walk out your door and bam cheap drinks and mediocre food, but thought it was just a fairy tale. Like, if you step on a crack you break your mother's back. we've all stepped on hundreds of cracks and moms are walking just fine these days. So why would this tale be any different. Boy was I wrong, I had an amazing time! I heard great comedy that you would otherwise have to pay at least $10-$12 bucks for, I pet a dog without leaving my bar stool, and discussed the world according to Bill Cosby in a post-Qualoid era. I left with a great big smile on my face and now I get why people would spend big money to live near a great neighborhood bar. The host of the comedy show is a neighborhood guy and it looked like about 80% of the audience are his friends! Which is impressive to get all your peeps to show up at the same time. It's a tiny space in the back which gives it that gritty NY comedy room feeling that makes you feel special you got a seat. There was about 6+ comics in total and most of them were slap-a-knee, side stitch funny. One guy was featured in one or more of the Barbershop movies and was super funny, but there was one scary guy that seemed like he ruffie's women in his spare time that I don't think he even realized he was there to tell jokes on a comedy stage nor maybe realized he was on a stage at all! For free-99 it was a decent balance of talent and pure entertainment. I feel like this showcase will shortly grow out of this room, so take advantage of it's super uber, exclusive Yipster (Yuppy+Hipster) status now while it lasts. I had such a great time I stayed afterwards for the great conversation. I met a local Roscoe Villager, a teacher that let's say was really enjoying his summer break. He showed us his chronological photo montage of him shaving his full beard off while styling it into various mustache styles in the process. From the longhorn to the handlebars - it was a sight to see and just pure comedy. He was so nice, he just rolled up on us and started a conversation. A random man did come through with a stack of pizzas that he apparently sells by the pies. The teacher said, it's kind of his thing that he does every Thursday night. We purchased one, because when in Rome! Also he seemed to pop up right on time Cause we scarfed it down. We bought 2 drinks - a vodka and soda and an old fashion which cost about $15, but seemed to give us the right amount of buzz too. And the bartender seemed to blend in with the patrons so it was hard to pin him down. But someone saw my thirst and flagged him down for us. It's super laid back, so I didn't mind. Lastly, the dogs, oh the dogs! Yes, I said it earlier, I pet a dog. They roam leash free like they're in a West Loop dog park. It just added to the charm and craziness of this place. I love dogs, so it made for an even funnier evening. Finally, we ended the night talking with some of the comics. The vibe was so friendly I really assumed everyone knew each other and ended up introducing lots of Villagers to each other. Which made me smile. I'll definitely be back. This is a neighborhood bar for my friends and I to walk to and play pool. We always order several drinks between us and enjoy that dogs are welcome. However, the older bartender with the beard can be so mean every time we come. We're always very friendly and really have a good time here without being too loud. We're not sure why but we are always meant to feel unwelcome when we order drinks (bartender acting like we don't exist for a few minutes and it's a small bar). This last time we came in to play and it was the only time we didn't order more than a drink and he asked us not to come back if we were just going to order water and a drink to play free pool. He also turned our TV off where the pool table was after we ordered. It was just extremely unwelcoming and he's always here. The bouncer kicked my boyfriend out for hitting a girl in the head, but it was another guy (that is my guess, since we were together the whole time and he 100% did not hit anyone by accident or purpose). The bouncer took the girls word for it instead of him seeing it himself. We had already put $20 in kareoke songs we never got to sing because of this. The principal is wrong as it was a false accusation- and that's what I did not appreciate. Basically, we were robbed of a good time due to incompetence/negligence in terms of the bouncers job... positives was that the bartender was quick and friendly. The place has a homey feeling. I will not be back though due to this issue because it was not justified, and the accusation was incorrect. The bartender woman was so angry and mean, don't go there. The bar was great especially when the male bartender was on duty. Super chill and amazing. But a guy we were with had to go to the washroom but the guys bathroom had no stalls. We advised him to use women's washroom with a person standing outside. This way no weirdness would happen and everyone was safe. But the bartender tried to go in to "catch him" and we politely said, sorry someone is in there. She went on a rant that he should not be in the women's bathroom. It was weird and crazy. Don't go there if that women is a bartender. She is not ok. It was so weird. Four Treys was just the speed I was looking for on a Sunday afternoon. We had finished up brunch at nearby Black Rock and were looking to continue the drinking in a casual atmosphere. After turning down another bar down the street that was a little too in-your-face for us, we spotted Four Treys and stopped in. It's not much to look at, but you'll be greeted by the bartender and can find a decent selection of your typical bar beers. Be prepared for cash only; however, an ATM is conveniently located within the bar. Dog friendly! It didn't do me much good because we'd previously been somewhere that I couldn't bring the pooch and the weather was not nice enough to leave her in the car, but it's nice to know that if someone suggests meeting here and I'm worried about time that I can bring the pup. read more

The diviest of dives, man. Cash only. Dog friendly. No food except for a bag or two of potato chips hanging from the ceiling. Carpet that looks like it has lived 19 lifetimes. Dinginess everywhere. Karaoke binders that carry a pungent sickly sweet swell of dozens of spilled beers. Basically, it's like a better-lit fraternity basement party, with slightly better drink selections. And less PDA. The front of the bar is where you'll do your ordering (I recommend sticking to hard liquor or bottled beers, as I've had taste issues with the draft sometimes), but head back to play pool or darts or claim a table for karaoke. This is one of those bars that will be dead as a doornail at 10 p.m. and suddenly breaking the fire code 45 minutes later. It gets a good crowd, from 20 somethings all the way up through the occasional grandparent, and everyone is typically in a good mood (probably because you can feel comfortable rolling into this place in jeans, a hoodie, and Chucks, even on a Saturday night). Drink prices are good, the guy selling tamales tends to show up right when you need him, and the bathrooms are clean enough to get the job done, which is of some comfort considering how divey the place really is. Our favorite neighborhood bar. My friends and I love Saturdays and Four Treys, which is karaoke night. The DJ is great and the crowd is the friendliest in the city. This place is the opposite of pretentious. You can wear anything, drink anything, sing anything, and still make new friends here. A terrific place for dancing, since the DJ plays good tunes between karaoke hits. Saturdays are also $6 pitchers. Overall drink prices are very cheap here. I was stuck at about 3.5 stars for this place. It would have been 4 if I hadn't had my last experience there with a bitchy, rude waitress and when they were out of the Bud Light pitchers on special, she felt like substituting an $18 pitcher was no problem. Ugh. Some nights this place can feel a little too cliquey. We live about 200 yards away, so I wanted to love this place. Karaoke on Saturday nights is the most ghetto I've ever seen, but fun if you're with the right people. The crowds on Saturday nights also seem more fun and welcoming. Other times we've gone here and felt totally unwelcome. The owners live down the street from me and are completely awesome, so I know that it's mostly just the staff and the "regular" clientele. This bar is perfectly laid back. I don't mean that the owner has contrived the atmosphere and decor to seem laid back. In fact- the decor in the place looks like it has been collected over the years and kept because it still works, not because it matches some designer's vision. The overall effect is that you're hanging out at a friend's house, where a little spilled beer isn't a big deal. You'll usually run in to a friendly dog or two here. I like going during the week (Tuesday night Trivia. It almost deserves its own positive review) where you'll probably meet Anna, the bartender who is always nice but never sacchrine sweet (this is a good thing), The prices are also right: $2.50 PBRs during the week. Saturday Karaoke is fun where there is little shame in butchering a song, but a good rendition is always appreciated. The dj whose name I always forget plays a dancable mix that's a little heavy on the Lady Gaga, but otherwise pretty palatable and generally fun. It's usually pretty packed on Saturdays, too. If you're looking for a place that's polished and will serve you drinks with umbrellas or things that end in "tini" while you wear stilletos, I suggest you look elsewhere. If you want to wear jeans and hang out, this is the place to go. read more

Pretty bummed about how down hill it has gone. My friend Linny used to bartend here and it was a great little dive. Had a grand opening party for a gym (local business owner in the neighborhood)and took everyone here afterwards. Tell everyone how great, divey and friendly it is only to almost get into a fight with the bartender last night because he insults my wife and sister. The guy put ice in my wife's drink (beer cocktail) when she turned around to talk to friends. She politely asked for a new one and he got visibly upset and said some pretty rude comments. I mean it's a drink you fool and she didn't ask for ice so why did you put it in there? Apologize and give her a new one... Anyway kind of bummed because I have seriously been going here for years and really enjoyed how chill and friendly it was to drink here. Now, I LOVE a good dive bar, but here are the reasons I don't go back to Treys anymore: - There's no air conditioning (Which, last summer, for example, was equivalent to murder.) - The 2nd stall of the Ladies Room remained "out of order" for at least several months (Who knows how long it was broken before I started going there. Is it still?) - They only take cash (Yes, there's an ATM, but let's join the modern world, Treys.) - They charge for soft drinks ($2.50!? "Chicago's best bar with carpeting." There are great times to be had at the Treys. My roommate and I found this place about 5 years ago when living around the corner. It was the closest place to get drunk on a cold winter's night. That's about it. Short on atmosphere. Short on selection. No food. But Saturday nights...now I like Saturday nights. Saturday night is Karaoke night, and my buddies and I have been coming here for years. It's the kind of place we always seem to end up visiting after midnight when it's packed. We'll storm in, tip the Karaoke DJ, and drink straight from our $6 pitchers until we can't feel feelings. I don't know if they're licensed to do this, but they seem to stay open until about 3am or after. Honestly, I can't remember if they sell beer that late, but I know I've left that late. Unfortunately, there is a drawback to drinking straight from a $6 pitcher of light beer. Guaranteed headache on Sunday morning. Essentially, you've got a crappy bar serving crappy beer and people signing crappy songs. The floor is carpeted (how many other bars can say that?), and the people are friendly. This place has cheap beer, a friendly atmosphere, many games (board games, bag-o, pool, ect.), and good clientle. The detail that makes this bar stand out is that they let you bring your dog. They'll even bring your dog treats while you enjoy your cold beer. If you don't like the dog policy, there's plenty of bars nearby. For me, that's the reason to go there. Why 2 stars? Even on a day when all the windows and doors are open this place reeks of it's many years of cigarette smoke penetrating the walls. I don't understand the lack of ventilation. Or perhaps this place is just so old skool that there's no getting the stank out. I just don't enjoy the pervading smell of the place. Totally our bad, we thought karaoke was Friday and Saturday (nope just Saturday) but we were here, so why not. I like the Four Treys. I like it a lot. It's a great place to hang out, play some darts, and drink a brew with your friends and some dogs. The bartenders are very nice, patient, and friendly. The space leaves a little to be desired, but they've got good games, good seating, yet enough open space for pool and darts. The only reason that it gets 3 stars from me is that it has a very poor selection of beers on tap. Compared to most of the other bars in Roscoe Village, it has a very poor tap selection.
