Not wanting to venture out into the chilly rain, we played a little restaurant roulette using the EAT24 app in our new neighborhood. I have to say that I am not disappointed in the overall quality from Ghar-E-Kabab. Like many of the other comments here I was a little underwhelmed by the portion sizes in relation to the cost of our meal. Also, delivery took a bit longer than I'd have liked. We had the Chicken Korma (Boneless chicken in an onion based creamy sauce) and it was delicious. The basmati rice was nice and fluffy to boot. Two of us split an order and it was *just* enough for two people. We also ordered the Chana Masala (chickpeas in a spicy red masala spiced sauce). Again, it was very tasty. An order of plain naan bread rounded out dinner for us. We split everything and there was plenty for the two of us, without having any leftovers to put away at the end. For $35 or so I'd have thought we would have had a little more food, but all in all we were not disappointed in what we had. Their website lists delivery times at 45-60 mins. if you order online. From order to having food in hand was closer to 90 minutes. Fortunately we were not starving for dinner and it was fine. Given the inclement weather tonight, which I didn't have to drive in, I'm willing to give them another shot. read more

Love this place. I order the butter chicken with garlic naan (pretty much every time because it's soooo good) it is the best butter chicken I have ever had. I truly didn't know butter chicken could taste this good! The sauce/recipe they use is just amazing - this is not a CHAIN Indian restaurant but a truly authentic and fine establishment. 4.5 Stars - My wife and I only ate here because Negril was closed, but that was a stroke of good luck. I have a feeling this could be one of my favorite Indian places in the metro area after a couple more visits. I found the ambiance very nice, decent pictures on the walls, good music that was at a decent volume level. It was quiet and nearly deserted when we arrived. The poppadom were very sharply flavored, and the chutneys are distinctive from what you might taste in other places. They are very tasty and pretty spicy. My wife had the lamb biryani and really enjoyed it. It was a large portion and really tasty. Not overpowering and served with a wonderful raita. I had black eyed peas with bamboo shoots and potatoes with a Nepali sauce. It was fantastic. The sauce was great and I can't say enough good things about it. I had never heard of this dish before, but it was highlighted at the bottom of the vegetarian entrees. I would think that the other Nepali dishes that are highlighted throughout the menu are worth trying as well. I highly recommend this restaurant, I plan to return often. And to try the momo and a bunch more dishes. read more

You can't say enough good about this place. The only drawback is that it gets crowded (but that does not have an effect on service, which is prompt and attentive throughout). That said, when we arrived early in the evening on Valentines Day without reservations, they really worked their reservation book to find a way to seat us and a few without reservations who came in after us. They did tell us that they would be slammed in a couple of hours and asked us if we would be able to dine in that time and we agreed that we could, and toward the end of our meal, they were indeed getting a crowd in there. The food is always excellent. Every time I eat there, I say they "make the best x (whatever I ordered) that I've tasted in the DC area." I eat mostly vegetarian food in Indian restaurants and do the same here. My usual companion eats lamb and beef and loves those dishes here. Everything is prepared to order, so it may take some time to get the food. The food and the wines are all organic. They turned me on to some excellent organic wines. Their service goes the extra mile. read more

The food from Ghar-e-kabab has been some of our favorite for several years now. Their saag paneer is amazing, as is their ras malai. Their Nepalese menu is tremendous. The delivery service is terrible, though, and the prices keep getting jacked higher and higher. read more

I've eaten at G-E-K a few times, and found the food a little pricey, the service mediocre (I've had to correct my bill because they undercharged us), and the restaurant cramped. But they've lost my patronage for good due to tonight's terrible delivery experience. G-E-K took over two hours from my time of online ordering to deliver my food - not the 45 minutes promised. I kept calling, and they told me at 1 hr, 1 and a half hrs, and 2 hrs that the food was made and would be delivered in "just a few minutes." When this didn't happen, the person on the phone just said "things happen." They also lost my online order, so I had to call them back and give them all my credit card details - 4 telephone calls for a simple delivery order! Furthermore, the food was mediocre and cold when it arrived. Chicken tikka masla lacked taste. Somosas were tiny, came with no sauces, and also lacked much taste, themselves. In sum, I'm giving G-E-K two stars only because they agreed to give me a discount on my order - again, after I complained four times. But if you are in Silver Spring and want good Indian, just walk one block down the road and go to Bombay Gaylord! Food is tastier, restaurant is less cramped (though its decor is a little less sophisticated), staff is friendlier, and the menu is cheaper. read more

I absolutely love their food and staff. I live next door and have watched this business grow from the beginning. They are consistent. The food and service there is always good. Gluten is a very serious problem for me and many restaurants are not accommodating. Ghar-E is accommodating and has a long list of options. For those of us with gluten allergies or Celiac, this is impressive. Delicious food, friendly service, and quality are what I think Ghar-E-Kabab. I highly recommend this place! read more

We went to the buffet this weekend and it was great. Their cauliflower, cabbage, and lentil dishes were delicious. If you eat meat, they had tandoori chicken and karahi chicken as well, which were both great. Don't be fooled by the demeanor on the outside, because inside there is ample seating, stylish decor, and attentive service. I went here for dinner last night with three other people. The tiny restaurant was pretty packed! It's decorated nicely and the service was great. I'm not that familiar with Nepalese/indian food, luckily two of the people I was with had been here several times before. We each ordered something and shared, which is a great way to try things if you aren't sure what you like. We started with the momo, which were chicken dumplings accompanied by two different dipping sauces. We had naan, a type of bread, green kabob (chicken with cilantro), lamb curry, some kind of lamb rice, and another chicken dish in a red sauce (sorry, I don't remember all of the names!). Everything we had was great. They serve beer and wine here, and apparently they have great desserts, although we were too full to indulge this time. Another great Silver Spring restaurant! read more

I'm Indian so I'm definitely pickier than most when it comes to Indian food, but even so -- this place is mediocre. I was very excited to see than an Indian place opened up in Silver Spring, but the food here is just ok. I've gone only for dinner and done take out once or twice. The vegetarian options are limited and the spices are somewhat bland. The food is generally too oily. I'm assuming the chef may be Pakistani as opposed to Indian given the number of meat dishes on the menu. I wish I could recommend but this place but I can't. The best Indian restaurant hands down in DC is Indique Heights in Chevy Chase. Absolutely amazing food. read more

I discovered this restaurant while perusing Yelp for a nice Indian place to take my boyfriend for our anniversary dinner, and by the time we finished our meal, we were both satisfied with the food and the experience. We arrived a little after five on a weeknight and were seated right away. A few other parties came in while we were dining but it never approached the level of 'busy'. The decor was elegant and not overdone, and the gentle music in the background was just that--background music that in no way overwhelmed the ability to have quiet conversation. He had the chicken tikka masala, which, as other reviewers have said, looks like a small portion but ended up being very satisfying (especially with the free refill of rice). I had a taste and he and I both enjoyed it. I opted for the non-vegetarian thali, since I don't have a particular favorite dish and always like to try a little of everything when I can at a new restaurant. All of it was tasty, although I didn't care for the texture of the lamb; it felt like there was too much fat left on, and while that didn't diminish the taste, my personal preference texture-wise is for lean meat. The two dishes I most enjoyed were the Aloo Tama and the Kukhura ko Masu, both of which were spiced very well and the first things to disappear from my platter. The only complaints I would make are: no naan comes with the regular entrees (although I did receive some with my thali), and the waiter was slow to offer refills on water. My glass sat empty for quite some time at a couple points during the meal; however, I'll give it a pass in light of the good quality of the food. Overall, we had a nice time and will be visiting again (or possibly ordering delivery, as they will deliver in a five-mile radius). read more

I placed an order on Yelp with EAT24 today. The estimated delivery time was 60 minutes. I called the restaurant at around 60 mins and they said that the driver had just left and that we were first in line to get our food. Half an hour and a crying baby later, we still didn't have our food. We got our food a full 90-100 minutes after we placed the order. We were hoping that our wait would be worth it but the saag paneer was bland. The paneer was tough. Harder than the chicken even. The chicken tikka masala was ok, just the standard deal. The aloo paratha didn't taste good either. The cream of tomato soup was good. So overall, a horrendous delivery experience and bland food. I just wasted around $50 and they've lost a potential long term customer primarily due to the delivery issue. read more

I was desperate to find an Indian place that would deliver and rejoiced when this place did. I tried saag aloo and paneer tikka masala (they called it something different though) and some garlic naan. It was super tasty! The spinach dish was nice and spicy. Good food, very good service, reasonably priced. We were quickly greeted at the door and escorted immediately to a table. The restaurant is deceptively large; it's well lit and clean, though a bit spartan with large-tile floors and chairs probably more suited for a banquet hall, though comfortable. We started with a pair of vegetable samosas. I then had the Malai Kebab and my wife had chicken curry. I had an oversized beer and my wife a normal-sizes beer, and our bill came to $50.97, plus tax. Service was attentive without being stifling. When they brought our food, it was delivered with a bi of flair; the chicken curry, for example, was served in what seemed to be a small copper pot, with a small warming candle underneath (which apparently was quite effective). My chicken chunks were large, tasty, and moist, and the chicken curry was also good. Out only regret was not asking for some basmati rice to take home with our leftovers. We've been to the restaurant three times in 2009 with family. We love the lunch buffet because the choices vary each time we visit. This is a kid-friendly restaurant. Our granddaughters were greeted with complimentary mango lassi drinks as soon as we were seated. Okay, I had my last interaction with this place. I used to like them, although they're bit expensive. But lately, their food service has been way below par. Placed an order for pickup at 6:45p, drove there at 7:45p, paid, was told that food was not ready. Gave them the benefit of the doubt that it takes time to pack food. They asked to wait another 1 min and another 1 min and another until it became more like 10 min wait. They don't have parking and standing outside the restaurant is not allowed. I had my blinkers on thinking it will be a min. When asked, they say one of your four orders is being cooked. That was the last straw. Can't risk getting ticketed over your dismal service. I cancelled my order, called it quits, and would never recommend this place to anyone. Totally unacceptable. read more

Food was very very bland and yet expensive. Don't don't do it. I ordered the chicken biryani (spicy) with extra raita. The chicken was unseasoned and the dish overall lacked the aroma and full flavor associated with Indian cuisine, plus it wasn't spicy at all. To add insult to injury the extra raita I ordered to go with the spice was $5!! Outrageous for extra yogurt sauce. We went here with my in-laws for dinner last night (previously I had only had take-out from here). My dine-in experience essentially confirmed my opinion from take-out: the food is good, but the portions are small for the price. We had a mix of dishes; in general, I thought the sauce dishes were better than the grilled meats, which seemed just a bit on the dry side. The restaurant is much nicer inside than I had expected from the exterior and it is reasonably spacious. They are also quite kid-friendly (they immediately brought my son a mango lassi when we sat down!). The wines we had were good, and at a somewhat intermediate price ($35/bottle). The service was good. All-in-all, though, it is somewhat pricey (I'd say this is really more like $$$ if you dine-in, only $$ if you do take-out)... but pretty nice traditional Indian food.... it's not as fancy as Rasika and is more affordable (and closer to home for us!). read more

Had a lovely dinner here with a friend on a slow Sunday night. The servers were gracious and friendly and the food was terrific. My friend had okra and tandoori vegetables. I tried the tandoori vegetables and they were very tasty, very well done. I had a chicken dish that was described as Nepalese (sorry I can't remember the name!!) with onion kulcha. The dish was wonderful Tasty and flavorful with tender chunks of white and dark meat chicken. Interesting and bright sauce without overwhelming heat. Rice was perfect. This is one of my favorite places to eat when I am visiting the Silver Spring area. It is a small, clean restaurant with friendly service and amazing food. During my last visit I ordered the lamb vindaloo. Our server warned me that it was very spicy but I ordered it any way. Well he wasn't exaggerating! The vindaloo was delicious and I gladly suffered through it. Our server was most amused and brought me yogurt. He felt a little sorry for me not heeding his warning and took 10% off our bill. I will continue to build my tolerance to heat in the meanwhile and will gladly return and order that vindaloo again! read more

My go to place for Indian food delivery. The food is always tasty Big warning about their lamb and chicken vindaloo, extremely hot if you're not used to it. I however, love it as it'll cure whatever is ailing you. Their butter chicken is rich and creamy but a bit too sweet for my liking, are usually cut the sweetness by mixing in some rice. My only negative is a big one, delivery takes forever. Especially if it's your first time. Once you're on their system it's a bit faster but still too long. I've found that ordering from Yelp is probably the fastest way to get your food to you. read more
