My family and I love this place, we even had our wedding rehearsal dinner here. The place reminds us of Filipino home cooking but today, I'm very disappointed...my husband put in a reservation for my birthday for tomorrow. I called to pre-order food and spoke to one of the Managers and she was rude and told us that there's a minimum of $900 for the food and to have the room exclusive. We had no issues with that but we were never told about this a month ago when we made the reservation, and after speaking to several of their staff members. Hidden behind the Hilton Garden Inn, it would be easy to miss this place if you didn't already know it was there. So glad we spotted the sign on our way out of the parking lot. We ordered the tokwa at lechon kawali appetizer - a huge portion of fried tofu cubes, crispy pork with fresh sliced onions and sauce on the side. Next up was the fried tilapia with ensalata talong (eggplant salad with salted egg). The presentation was beautiful and the fish cooked perfectly crisp and easy to serve. I never like dining out for Filipino food, until this place. I usually find restaurant versions of the foods I thought I knew --to be odd. Just want to say... as someone conceived, born, and raised in the US, with a mother who didn't know how to cook, and left me to the care of white babysitters, I can say non-Filipinos will probably like the food here a lot. Idk about when they first opened, I heard there were mixed reviews, but in pandemic times there is a lot of yumminess verging on palate decadence going on here. I've been here four times --averaging about 20 of us. I can only attest to large-party dining. There are clearly tables with people on dates and nuclear families. The food and drink was consistently delicious. Service was exceptional. I would never want to have to deal with the family I was born to, especially when they're ...them! So, also know, this place can handle at least 10 challenging personalities at the same time, and same table in hangry states and hyperactive (post meal) states. I found here on American Airlines Dining. I wanted to earn mileages in order to Cebu Islands! Anyway, I thought that Akasaka Japanese restaurant was here before. I was glad to see a Pinoy restaurant. I wanted to try noodles. I picked up Lomi. It was so hot. Wikipedia says" Lomi is best eaten while steaming hot. It is a challenge to be able to finish eating before the bowl gets cold." It was crazy for me to eat the hot Lomi. The soup burned my tongue! lol. It was good to eat when it was cold. I really wanted to visit the Philipinnes someday. I need to know the cuisine. Here's why I love Gerry's Grill. For starters, there is table service, and the ambiance is that of an actual restaurant. Unfortunately, the bulk of Filipino restaurants in Houston are meh, and serve buffet-style food. It's cheap, yes, but it's not great. At Gerry's you have an actual waitstaff that is friendly and the food is made to order! There is no food sitting out under heat lamps all day getting dried out. A pet peeve of mine of ALL Asian restaurants is dried out white rice. I know plenty of people are complaining that Gerry's makes you pay for rice-- but listen, I'd rather pay for fresh, hot, fluffy white rice than dried out sh*tty rice that's from yesterday. Thank you, Gerry's. I ordered the lumpia shanghai, lechon kawali, pork sinigang, and pancit bihon. They were all good. The only issue I had was that the "meats" on the pancit were scarce; not as plentiful as in the picture on the menu. There was barely any shrimp, chicken, or pork, but the noodles were good, and not dry or greasy. The sinigang broth was flavorful, and didn't have chewy pieces of pork, or an abundance of bones- which some places tend to have. I wanted to try the KareKare, but nothing compares to my dad's home cooking so I didnt' want to self-sabotage myself. Plus, karekare is typically made with oxtail, not beef. I get why they use beef, but yea, I will try it next time. The venue space is large; there are private rooms for parties enclosed in glass, booths, a bar, and tables. My family and I had a great time as there was a live singer that was quite a treat for us and made dining very enjoyable. The staff said its not all the time, it was just because they were promoting an event, but if you ask me a live singer while dining makes the experience memorable and enjoyable. Came here for husband's birthday and we are actually excited to try Gerry's grill but the food was underwhelming. We drove 3 hrs just to satisfy our cravings only to be disappointed. First off, most of the food that we ordered served as if they were all just warmed up and been cooked since that morning or who knows when. We ordered calamares, inihaw na pusit (didn't felt and tasted fresh off the grill) literally wasted money on this one! Then beef stew caldereta, husband said it was bland and tasted old. The only hot item fresh was the bangus ala pobre. Pancit bihon was freshly cooked but it was awful. Also, the garlic fried rice was not hot. Sago't gulaman drink was a let down too. Located near Chinatown, it's a spacious place with lots of tables and booths. They check your temperature upon entering (COVID!) and are good about wearing masks. So as usual, we over ordered for two people - sisig pork: need to eat while it's sizzling and hot or else the fat kinda makes you realize that you're probably clogging all your arteries lol. Very good though - sinigang pork: they use pork belly and it's very big and fatty. Lots of veggies which I loved, the soup was nice and sour. The only thing, I wish the soup came out hotter (temperature wise). Was kinda lukewarm when served to us - chicharon bulaklak: pig intestine shaped into a flower and fried. After trying Gerry's Grill for the first time in California last year, I was eager to dine at the Houston location. Today was the day I got the opportunity, and I'm in disbelief of how my younger brother and I almost went to another restaurant after church. You know you live in a place where there's lots of Filipinos when a Gerry's is close by. Actually, it's a good 90 minutes from La Marque, but still, the drive was worth it. Unsurprisingly, the eatery was busy, but we sat at the bar for faster service. A nice bartender by the name of Ivy took really good care of us. Like the Gerry's out in Artesia, CA, this one was pleasing to my palate. I thoroughly enjoyed my order of kare kare and pork barbecue. The kare kare consisted mostly of meat as opposed to vegetables, which I found to be cool. For the first time ever, I ate the Philippine town fiesta staple with bagoong (shrimp paste), making for a positively unique experience for my tastebuds. I'm so enamored with the pork barbecue. I was expecting to be served two sticks of thinly sliced pieces of meat, but I was gladly mistaken. Gerry's did a impressive job with my favorite street food from the old country. The kitchen staff wasn't stingy with the meat -- huge, tender, well-marinated chunks on three sticks! -- and they remembered to accompany the item with atsara (pickled papaya condiment). I was so full that I refused dessert. And I don't leave a Pinoy place without stuffing my face with halo halo. Gerry's Grill is probably the best overall Filipino restaurant in Houston. I'll admit there are less Filipino restaurants than other major US cities like New Jersey, Los Angeles, or San Diego, but Houston definitely has its fair share. What sets Gerry's Grill apart from the rest of Filipino restaurants in Houston is the actual look of the restaurant. The ambiance of Gerry's Grill is very nice! I was actually shocked by how well they decorated the restaurant. It's very modern looking, clean, and inviting. It's a restaurant you would want to take out of town guests to whether they are Filipino or not. This is by far Gerry's Grill's biggest strength in helping to introduce Filipino food to the rest of the greater Houston area. As far as the food goes, I was quite surprised. The food all came out great! My favorites were their eggplant ensalada, pork bbq liempo, pork sinigang, garlic rice, bangus sisig, and crispy chicken wings. The food all came out piping hot, and was full of flavor. I just wish the food came out a little faster because we did have to wait a bit. Although I'd cut them some slack because the restaurant is PACKED on Sundays especially when everyone goes out to eat for lunch after church. My only other complaint is that Gerry's Grill is definitely on the expensive side compared to every other Filipino restaurant. I'm not really surprised though because you get what you pay for, and Gerry's Grill is higher quality. I just suggest maybe having daily specials to ease the cost a little, while still being able to make a profit, or some kind of meal deal.
