I came in for some ECU work on my 2016 C63. The owner was very thorough but almost to the point where I was a little knocked on my heals at first. He found some additional issues that I was not ready to process mentally. The ECU work took a little longer than what I would have expected but met the estimate that he gave me which I came to understand a lot more with how much they went through. Overall, considering that the price was what you would expect compared to others there was a lot of value in having this shop go through my entire vehicle. Jan is fantastic! I brought him a newly purchased 2014 SL550 to check a couple of things out. He was so thourough in going through everything on the car. He ended up finding a bunch of stuff that I didn't know about, and reccommended that I try and return the car instead of fixing anything. I did just that, and was able to get a full refund. I have been taking my car for years to the Porsche dealer. Finally realized how expensive they were and so based on the yelp reviews I tried German auto tech. They were great, they answered my questions. They serviced my car with a 30,000 mile service plus they found a rat infestation in the car cleaned it fixed it and set me up for going forward. This looks like it has been here for years and the Porsche dealer never dealt with it. I have had a couple of services done here. I have a 2008 SL 55 AMG, Mercedes Benz. I had super charger oil changed, transmission mount, changed, and a belt wrap kit for the small supercharger pulley. Total jerk on the phone. Must not be looking for new business given the attitude. I'll try someone else. I explained that my 911 had a faulty ignition switch. When I asked for an estimate, he blurted out, "2 grand." I asked for an explanation of parts and labor and didn't get one. He then sent me a sarcastic message via Yelp, and a condescending message on this Yelp page. (See Liz L.'s comment here... I received the same treatment.) I'm not an idiot. I know Porsche repairs are more expensive than a Chevrolet. Also this... According to RepairPal.com, the average cost to replace a Porsche 911 ignition switch is between $427 and $465. This range does not include taxes and fees, and does not factor in your unique location. $465 + a 20% bay area upcharge + tax would total around $600. Never been to this business, but I just called to get a quote on how much a diagnostic test would be for my vehicle, and the guy who answered the phone was very rude. His tone, attitude, and irritability was extremely felt on my end. I ended the call immediately because the way he was putting his misery on me was so unprofessional. His attitude was like he didn't want to be at work and do his job. I asked simple questions about the process, and he immediately had an attitude and spoke in a condescending way. I booked an appointment with Jan, the owner, about several weeks in advance to see if his shop could diagnose and repair sputtering issues I was having. ( the engine would cut out for a split second- cough and continue normally but this coughing was potentially dangerous even though errratic and intermittent.) Jan listened to my description of what was going on and said it could be several issues so I agreed to have him work on it. At the day of my appointment, mechanic Steve was checking my car in for the service and discussed the issues with my diesel golf. After a few minutes, Steve just came out and said, " You may know this but I want to remind you that VW's extended emissions warranty of 11 years could cover the cost of the repairs and diagnosis of your car". "So you may want to consider taking your car to the dealership for this reason". So Steve and I discussed this option for a few minutes and I was literally stunned to be reminded of this knowledge he had about the Golf TDI warranty and his honesty and integrity! I made up my mind to cancel my servicing there which Steve said was perfectly acceptable with no guilt pressure to stay at shop and then I drove away and checked my car in to the dealership that very morning. Sure enough... After a diagnostic at VW, it was found that several issues were causing the sputtering but that most of the repair would be reimbursed by the warranty, saving me thousands of dollars!!! I've had both my 2006 SLK55 AMG and my 2010 Audi S4 repaired here. You will never feel like you are being taken for a ride or be asked to make an unnecessary repair. Everything they recommend is needed and they will do their best to save you money when possible. You will get to see the parts that were replaced when you pick up your car. For the AMG Jan showed me the problems he was fixing clearly and found ways to minimize costs on an expensive repair bill that I knew the car needed and was overdue. We found the same Brembos from another vendor instead of Mercedes and I saved probably $700. You can feel 100% comfortable with any quoted prices. My key battery died and I only had one key, Jan is one of the only people in the area who can make you a 2nd key and it was a reasonable price, now I have 2 working keys. On my 2010 S4 I was taking it to an Audi specialist, but I was quoted a $7000+ to replace the entire front suspension when they could not diagnose the source of a front-end clunk. Jan figured it out and the cost was pinpointed and turned out only to be $1200 to fix. German Autotech is an incredible place to take your vehicles and is 100% trusted. If someone can't figure out a problem, they will take pride in being the ones to solve it. They are so good that the shop often has a lead time, so plan accordingly. The wait is worth it. read more

I called Jan at German Autotech after having taken my Range Rover to two other shops without the issue having been resolved. My heated and cooled seats weren't working, although the switch would light up when either mode was selected. The first shop I took it to said that the fans underneath the seat had gone bad. I thought that was sort of odd that they would both go out at the same time. But, I went ahead and ordered both fans, to the tune of about $1,500, hoping it would resolve the issue. They were also special order, non-returnable items through the Range Rover dealership. The shop that diagnosed it said that I would have to take it to an upholstery shop to have the seats removed in order to have the fans installed. The upholstery shop called me and said that when the new fans were put in that it did not resolve the issue. They offered to send it to a trusted shop close to them for further diagnosis with the seats removed. That shop told me that it was the whole climate control unit in the dash that needed to be replaced. They charged me another $300 for their diagnosis and I paid another $300 or so to the upholstery shop for their work. I ordered the again non-returnable climate control unit for another approximately $1,500 from Land Rover, but it was on backorder with no ETA. So, I turned to Jan at German Autotech! He was able to figure out the problem in a very short time and it was resolved simply by his shop shutting down and rebooting the entire electrical system in the car. They were able to get the heated and cooled seats to come back online with a simple reboot. Luckily, I was able to call the Range Rover dealership and cancel the order for the climate control unit that is still on backorder, as it turns out that I do not need it. So, after about a year and a roughly $2,500 fishing expedition that I'd been sent on by other shops, Jan at German Autotech saved the day with a well thought out, simple but thorough game plan. It's refreshing to see that there are still mechanics out there who are actually interested in trying to figure out and resolve a problem rather than just throw expensive parts at a car hoping that it will resolve the issue. Its been a month since I had my VW Golf repaired here and it still drives and brakes perfectly. I was told that appointments were booked up to five weeks out, but Jan was able to fit me in within the week for a pretty big repair. They were able to to replace my front brakes and a leaking vacuum pump within the day I dropped it off. When I arrived to pick the car up, Jan had even repaired the side of my bumper that had been popped out of place since 2012-free of charge! This was a pretty expensive job, but very fairly priced for the amount of labor involved. I saved myself about $1000 compared to what the dealership had quoted me, which was a huge relief. Just took my recently purchased 2005 Porsche Cayenne in for the annual service. After their initial inspection, they called with a list of problems the car had. I bought the car used and knew about some of the problems but not the others. They could have just done the service and sent me on my way. Instead, he gave me a very honest assessment of the vehicle and suggested it may not be worth doing the service. Eureka! I finally found a shop that I can confidently say - will take care of "my-milky-red-baby". In layman terms - my old Porsche Boxster. Jan the owner/mechanic is extremely professional and knowledgeable about European automobiles. He is down-to-earth, attentive, efficient and has exceptional customer service skills. The guy spent 30+ minutes of his own time after work to explain the ins and outs how car shops take care of cars. When and when not to use OEM (original equipment manufacturer), went into detail explaining the amount of quarts of oil relative to an oil change needed for it's next service. For example if your car requires 9 quarts of oil, your oil change should last you 9,000 miles. He also explained the difference of synthetic oils - full synthetic and semi-synthetic and how shops get to save money replacing oil without costing more in their end. Afterwards, I just feel educated on basic mechanic lingo. I digress, After picking up my car after the bearings were replaced and the sway bar end links were attached. - you can see a major difference on the vehicles performance - the rumbling noises that my ghetto car used to have has disappeared and the new sway bars certainly make a noticeable difference in the handling characteristics of the vehicle. First and foremost, the car remains flatter through the corners, allowing the sticky Michelin tires to do their job of grabbing the road more effectively. Turn in and initial steering bite are greatly improved, as the steering now reacts effectively. Overall, I had a very pleasant experience and have that feeling that they are not trying to rip you off or sell things that I don't need. They are there to take care of your car to its full potential. I'll be returning and highly recommend that you should too. read more

My mom's 5 series BMW was running terrible so we decided to take it over to Jan at German AutoTech. We had been bringing our cars to Jan for years but the BMW was running so bad this time that we were sure that it was a goner. After evaluating the car, Jan was sure that he could get it running as good as new. We were somewhat skeptical given the current condition of the car, but Jan assured us that the car was entirely repairable. When we got the car back we were surprised to see that the car was running perfectly, just as Jan had promised. In fact, my mom swears that it was running just as good as the day she bought it. I also brought my '05 Mercedes C230 kompressor here, after having it checked by the Walnut Creek Mercedes dealer. Jan didn't want to see their report, but looked at it anyway. He then ran his own test and came up with the same (main) problem, but not the additional 5 or 6 Problems they stated. He gave me an estimate that was less then half what the dealer wanted. While doing the work he ran into a couple of unexpected problems. Fixed them!! Extra problems, extra time, he still came in on his estimated cost. This was all engine work, but I would trust him to fix anything on the car. Nice guy, clean shop, lots of past customers stopping by to just say "Hi" to Jan.. Go see him if you need work done the right way, for a VERY good price... Soooo, it has been just over a year since Jan worked on our car. He has called us a couple of times since the main work was done. First call was to see if we were still happy with his work, and to make sure everything was still o.k... Second call was to remind me the follow-up service was due (I had forgotten about it).
