We dropped in to ask for a quick pointer on our Mercedes at no notice. Tom was busy but he came out anyway to greet us. New owner, very disappointed in my appointment I made a week ago. Waited until 15 minutes after my schedule appointment and no one there at a closed shop. Finally called and was told they have a drop box for my key. Then also informed me that my routine oil change would not be ready until the next day. That seem very strange and out of the ordinary when it use to take no more then 4 hours. Not sure why this type of service would be needing to remain until the next day which would have made it Saturday. And the business is open Monday through Friday and closed on the weekend. My car would not start, or should I say it wouldn't stay running. I had my car towed to this shop. I have had my car serviced here before with good results. This time I wasn't happy with the service. He could not get my car running, and he did almost $2000.00 worth of work and he didn't call to do the work. So I put the car up for sale. The person that bought it had his mechanic come to the house to work on it. This mobile mechanic got it running in just a few hours. I was told that I got hosed by this shop. So the shop owner tells me he called me, but he didn't talk to me. So I guess that was his permission to start the work. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS SHOP AGAIN!!!!!!!!. It would have been nice if you told me what else needed to be fixed, you just told me it was going to cost more money. read more

I am a journalist and professional reviewer of services and things with 20 years experience in the field, and if I could give German Auto Specialists 10 stars, I would, for these three reasons. Over half a dozen visits to service and maintain my 1987 targa, I've found Scott and Briana to be a) extremely honest with a perfect level of integrity for their work b) communicative and pleasant to work with c) extremely technically proficient. There's literally nothing more anyone could possibly ask for in a Porsche mechanic. Also, despite his terrific attitude of service, the truth is that these reviews are pointless because he honestly does not need new business. I'm only here because some of the negative reviews are not only unfair, they make no sense and are improbable. It really pisses me off and makes me crack up at the same time. If you are a Porsche owner, you are lucky to have Briana and Scott, not the other way around. If you are complaining at all about cost, which is still better than a lot of places that I've seen (like the dealer) not only in cost and value, then it might be best if you sell your car and get a Toyota, which I also have and recommend. Great cars for those on a budget. If they retire, I'm going to sell my 911 and get an electric. PS If you're deciding between German Auto Specialists and another classic Porsche shop in town, drive by them all and notice that Scott's shop is the only one that does not look like a junk yard! German Auto Specialist is hands down my favorite shop ever! Scott and Briana are fantastic and have always been a pleasure to work with. Scott is an excellent mechanic and there doesn't seem to be anything that he does not know about my 1995 Bmw 3 series. I also like the fact that he does all the work himself, there is no grease monkey that is straight out of high school doing the labor like ALL of the other shops I've been to. I can trust that my car isn't being taken out for joyrides, used to grab lunch, or peeling out and drifting which all unfortunately happened with my car at other shops. This car is my dream car and I plan to keep it til the wheels fall off, but I know that won't ever happen since I've found such a great mechanic! I cannot complain about the price. Let's face it, you don't buy a BMW or Porsche because you are cheap and like to cut corners, and if that is the case for you then sadly your car won't last you very long. I never thought about writing a review for them until reading the reviews on Yelp about Scott and Brianna. For the last 7 years or so, Scott help me takes care of my Porsche and occasionally takes care my wife's Benz a few times. In my opinion, they are really nice people, Scott knows what he is doing, he will tell you up front what do you need to repair. Brianna is very friendly. When I call and told them my name, immediately they know who I am already. The only recommendation I will give is you need to call ahead of time for appointment, they are busy. I do recommend Scott to a lots of people. Some people may say they are expensive, but they use all Porsche parts, no after market stuff. Try call Porsche dealer and get an estimate and call Scott for his estimate, and you call tell me who is cheaper :-) read more

I have been going to German Auto for 3 years now from when Scott was the owner. I had great experiences there. Good quality work with fair prices. Scott left the business to Tom who is an awesome mechanic and continues to offer fair prices. HOWEVER, you don't deal with Tom, you have to speak to the young, untrained, no tact, makes promises he cant keep, unprofessional, inexperienced, argumentative, Service Writer. If you can get passed him, you should be okay. On my last visit he told me that I have an oil leak on my car and it would be a 3 hour job to change a valve cover gasket. He would not give me an appointment while I was there picking up my vehicle and said that I should call back in 2 weeks because he was busy. Two weeks later I called back and he made my appointment for 1 month later. Two weeks later I called him back to make sure we ordered the gaskets in time for the repair date. He said he would call me back before the date to make the order. Two days before the appointment, no call yet, I called him and he said he is out of the office and would call me tomorrow to order the part. Tomorrow came and he called me, ABRUPTLY saying that he has to do another diagnosis on the leak because it might be a 20 hour job. After a discussion about this $3,000.00 change in repairs, I agree to bring in the car tomorrow. Minutes later, Adrian called me back and said, "Because of our last conversation, WE are refusing to service your car." After dealing with the service writer on a few repair jobs, I was not upset, I was RELIEVED. I really don't trust my Turbo Carrera with him. I'm a retired police Lieutenant and I know poor character when I see it. This guy is very immature, unprofessional and has deep issues. I wish I could talk with Tom and explain, but he's too busy working on all of the cars. Tom needs to get a real service writer and lose this one. read more

I was quoted more labor hours and a higher labor rate than Porsche of Hawaii. What's the benefit of going to this independent shop? *Responding to German Auto Specialists 12/14/2017* I can verify for the audience that the price quoted was significantly more than Porsche of Hawaii. They were very clear when they said, "if i bring my own part, i will be charged a higher labor rate". They forgot to mention how they would try to double the labor hours too! The clutch was purchased online and i also informed Porsche of Hawaii and Stoermer's Automotive that i would be supplying the clutch. GAS' numbers were specifically $180/hr and 16-18 labor hour for a clutch job. POH quoted $160/hr and 8-10 labor hours. Attached is a note from my iPhone from the date i got the price quotes. The notes have not been modified since then, as it is clearly time stamped from July 27, 2016 at 4:03PM. *Click the photo to view the entire screen shot, including the time stamp* The lady on the phone also said, "it's a big job" and "they prefer not to do jobs that big". And really, that's fine. You can charge whatever you want based on your willingness to take on the job. I have to be honest -- the only reason I'm writing this review is because of the most recent one-star rating below, which I believe is wildly unfair and not at all warranted. I've been doing business with Scott for nearly 15 years -- he is, hands down, the best mechanic I've ever met. He is thorough -- he always explores all possibilities before providing diagnosis, he offers to replace low-cost components when they're accessible during repair/maintenance, and he provides very detailed records on the work performed. He is honest -- Scott is completely transparent with cost, ensures customers understand potentialities before he works on a vehicle, and he shows you the parts he installed and/or removed from your vehicle as a show of good faith. Last, he is communicative -- he always calls or e-mails ahead of appointments to confirm availability of you and parts, provides daily status updates while your vehicle is in the shop, and verbally discusses the ins and outs of his repair/maintenance when you come to pick your vehicle up. Honestly, I can't say enough good things about Scott and German Auto Specialists. For the nay-sayers out there: Cars (particularly high-end European ones) are expensive to own. I figured it was about time I left a review on here for the G.A.S. team I'm a first time owner of a Porsche (944 s2) and new to the island so when my old car bit the dust for the first time I towed it to a shop in Kailua, who I won't mention, and let's just say I still regret it to this day it was a horrible experience. They had my car for 2 weeks and charged me over a 1000 bucks. Long story short a couple weeks later my car was experiencing the same problems and it was not drivable, I decided to tow it to Scott and he had it my car fixed the next day, for less than half the price of the original rip off. Ever since then I've been back to G.A.S three times, they are by far the most reliable and knowledgeable mechanics I've come into contact with and I would recommend them to anyone, Scott is the best!! read more

I recently purchased a used Porsche Boxster and the car came with a few problems. I scheduled an appointment and Scott and Briana took care of my issues. This small shop is one of the best I've seen not only because the work is done correctly but because Scott has morals and ethical values, he is not the dealer, he diagnoses the problems and resolves them fairly and very quickly. In some cases Scott will go out of his way to make sure that you understand what is wrong with your vehicle and will go the extra mile doing small things without charging you. Just moved here from the mainland and my car started to overheat. I had it towed there since it was close to work. Scott and Brianna was very friendly and up front about the cost of fixing it. Yes it was quite expensive, but they did get the repair done the following day. He also recommended some repairs that I also knew that needed to get done but just don't have the funds to do it. From my first encounter over the telephone with Briana to the end of the service review with Scott, the sincere customer service was palpable. I took my recently purchased (used) BMW Z4 in for the 60,000 major service and maintenance. When I scheduled my appointment I was able to speak with Scott the mechanic/shop owner and he gave me a general breakdown of which services to expect and a reasonable cost estimate. Upon picking up my car I was pleased to discover that he found and corrected some minor things such as an expansion tank cap and license plate light bulb in addition to the regular maintenance. He gave my car thorough exam and made recommendations for future service based on the mileage of the car and current condition of the parts in question - the best part was that his recommendations were realistic and without a high pressure "the sky is falling" attitude. He understood that I purchased the car used and continually made reference to to mileage and history of the vehicle - it is nice that he actively considered the history as a variable during his service. Upon reviewing the items that he serviced I asked him to prioritize the order in which I should have the items repaired/replaced and he provided the information in terms from which I could easily develop a plan. As I told Scott after he reviewed the services, he is stuck with me for the duration of my time in Hawaii. read more

One of my coworkers recommended this shop, and I have to say I have been very pleased with the service. I have a 2004 BMW 330Xi, and have had to take it in twice for servicing in the six months since I bought the car. Scott does a great job of telling you what he thinks is wrong with the car as well as estimates for cost and time. Not cheap by any means, but less than the dealer, and you get what you pay for. Buying any German auto out of warranty will come with costly repair bills, but one should understand that before making the purchase. Recently found GAS. Intially used them for a PPI. When I bought a car I returned for service. Scott and Briana were super friendly and professional. They return emails/calls promptly and communicate very well. Some reviews speak to how expensive they are..., but I find them no more, probably less expensive, than other shops that work on expensive cars. We're talking Porsche's and BMW's, the parts for these cars tend to be expensive, no matter where you buy them, if genuine. So are the cars they work on. Scott appears to know everything about the Porsches, owns one or two, and seems to have a passion for them. I'm really glad to have someone who knows how and what to do to keep them in tip top shape. They also offer service the local Porsche dealer wouldn't....a PPI (pre purchase inspection). Local P store also very slow to give one an appointment. Shop is very clean, going to them has been an educational experience for me. Both Scott and Briana are very personable, and take the time to talk to you about your driving needs/wants/ car. I was expecting a different kind of a shop. This shop is low volume=Really Expensive. You will not spend less than 1,000 for a appointment. If not Scot will be wasting his time. This guy is very good. I brought my car there and the bill was just too high. Over 3,000 for the repair I picked my car up and brought it home to get another estimate. The next day I found a smash in my rear passenger door. I am not blaming his shop because I cannot prove it. Another 1,100.00 to repair that and the original repair I went in for in the first place.
