If I could give Dr. Cheng and her office 10 stars, I would. I've been coming to Dr. Cheng since high school, so it's been 10+ years that I've been in her care. Dr. Cheng is such a wonderful optometrist. She remembers me every time, always strikes up good conversation and asks you about what's happening, and walks you through all the steps of the exam so you know what's going on. She's is 100% knowledgeable and really does try her best to get you what you need. She explains all your options, pros and cons (including pricing!), to make sure it's what you want and need. A few years ago, my contacts started irritating my eyes/turning them red, and Dr. Cheng worked with me for a period of 2+ months to try out different brands/lens to see what would work for me in terms of comfort and pricing. I can't think of many doctors, not just an optometrist, that would do this. We were able to find a new brand that worked for me, and that's what I've been wearing since. I have a ridiculous prescription (pretty much -10 in contacts, 1000+ in glasses) and astigmatism, so you can only imagine what a shit show my eyes are. Dr. Cheng and her staff always give advice as to what type of frames I should get -- smaller ones so that the lenses are smaller and don't make the glasses heavy. Wing helped me out the last time I was there, and she was extremely patient with me. I pretty much tried on 15 frames, big and small ones. I was really set on a big one to change things up, but settled for something in between. Wing was just an absolute angel to deal with my fickleness and pickiness. Whenever I get a new pair of glasses, they're always adjusted perfectly. I've never had any problem at all. While it may be hard to get an appointment (usually booked 2-4 weeks out, but I've come to expect this and she's amazing, so of course she's busy) and the selection of frames is smaller (hello, it's a small business you can't expect them to be Lenscrafters out here in the Richmond), I come back for the amazing experience. Even when I didn't have vision insurance, I came to Dr. Cheng and paid out of pocket. It was worth it, and I'd do it again. read more

I absolutely recommend Dr. Gheri Cheng and Custom Eyes Optometry. She has been our family eye doctor for decades, and she and her staff are always courteous, professional, and genuinely caring. The prices are also reasonable. We are very lucky to have this kind of small business in the neighborhood. I never consider going anywhere else for eye care. read more

Tried to book an appointment... it's July 2023... first available appointment December 2023... I don't know if the doctor is good... but definitely I'll never know... read more

My glasses broke my fall at Skyline Shopping Center (see that review). Unfortunately, I screwed up my frame and scratched one of the lenses. Since I bought my glasses at Dr. Cheng's, I went back there to order a new pair. While I was waiting for the new pair, Dr. Cheng let me take back the broken one so I can wear it at nights (contacts 24/7 is not the way to go folks). After I got the new pair, I asked Dr. Cheng if she could fix the broken one (replace the lens, straighten the frame). The clerk said it would cost $80 to replace both lenses (apparently the lab does both) and this is without the fancy stuff my original pair has (high index, non glare, etc). I picked up my glasses last week and Dr. Cheng said they were able to take advantage of the warranty on the original glasses so they replaced it for free! That's music to my ears! Fast, friendly service. read more

Dr. Gheri Cheng and her staff are an awesome group. Dr. Cheng is a real eye professional who is passionate about eye care. My visit made me feel right at home with her soft approach to my eye exam. I received free trial contacts to try and they have a nice selection of stylish frames for glasses. I definitely recommend her practice if you're looking for an optometrist or looking for a replacement. I have been with her for over a decade. read more

Dr Cheng is the best optometrist in the city for customer service, high competence and general 'niceness'. None better.

Highly recommended! I had an appointment about 2 weeks ago and I went to pick up my prescription today. Dr. Cheng takes her time and does a thorough job. I even played a game while I was there. A red laser blinks in random places and you click when seen. Was a good exercise for my eyes. The fitting took 2 weeks to find the most comfortable pair of contacts. My previous optometrist would write me the prescription the same day of the fitting. Dr. Cheng encouraged me to try each pair of contacts for 3-5 days to get a good feel for them. I ended up with the Acuvue Oasis and I got to try the Fresh Color contacts and Acuvue colors. Her prices are very competitive. I called 5 optometrists near me and I ended up here. Parking is easy. You can find free parking in the residential streets within one block. The office is small, so keep an eye out for it when you drive by. read more

Dr. Geri Cheng was one of the kindest, gentlest and most thorough eye doctors that I had brought my daughter to since she first got eyeglasses at the age of 5. Happily her office is located right down the block from us, too. My daughter and I were immediately made comfortable - we could tell we were in the hands of a professional who is very caring. And they have a great selection of frames ~ so my daughter's sense of style was easily taken care of, too. read more

There's a reason why Dr. Cheng has such high marks. She (and her staff) are not only kind and helpful, but they are also patient and very knowledgeable. Going to the optometrist is not on my list of activities that I deem enjoyable, but after switching from Kaiser's clinic (way to ruin my childhood, mean doctors!) to Dr. Cheng's, I don't mind going at all! I'm super sad that I'm no longer on my parents ahhmazing insurance and she's not on my provider list :( She is super personable and remembers trivial things about your life you've mentioned once 3 years ago. She has a good selection of glasses and doesn't even mind if I go through 30 pairs of glasses (which I have, and will continue to do so. How do I look?!) read more

I have only seen Dr. Cheng once before, maybe a few years back and just came back for an eye exam recently. The receptionist, Wing, was awesome. She was super friendly and made use of the time as Dr. Cheng was finishing with her patient by letting me browse the frames. She was helpful in showing me and aiding me in selecting my frames and also in explaining to me about the prices/what insurance covers. Dr. Cheng is seriously one of the best doctors/optometrist I've been to. I don't usually yelp about doctors because there's not much to say since it's not that personable, but it was different with Dr. C. As she does her eye exam, she asked me many questions throughout the appointment and was actually interested in my life. Not much of that comes from most doctors, but she is very friendly and seems like she genuinely cares! We even talked about college/careers and such. I also loved that she called me by my name throughout the appointment and made me feel comfortable in asking any questions or concerns about my eyes. She is professional and thorough with her eye exam. I'm glad to have chosen Dr. Cheng as my optometrist! The office is a bit small and appointments can be hard to book especially in the end of the year/beginning (probably due to insurance matters). It was worth the wait and I'm just waiting for my frames 8) Try to find parking up or down the street, not on the main street because of meters. Come a bit early if you need to find parking! read more

At their best, the staff is inept. They are not very good at adjusting the frames. In fact, they are terrible at adjustments. They have a small selection. read more

LOVE IT! Dr. Cheng is super-cool. Easily the nicest Optometrist I've ever met. I think she felt a little obligated to hold up the conversation, but she never seemed insincere. Plus, I have really great Brooks Brother's glasses now. She let me try on practically the whole display case, and never tried to rush me, and I admit I was just playing around with half of the frames. Go here if you can. It's the Optometric equivalent of that hole in the wall restaurant that not that many people know about but has GREAT food and like... nothing else. read more

What can I say, Geri is the best. I was one of her very first patients over 6 years ago when she just opened. I stumbled into her office for a quick appointment and I refuse to go anywhere else. She has great hours, even open on the weekends. Her receptionist is always sweet and has never been rude. Hey, Dr. Cheng even picks up the phone sometimes. She always gets you in on time and spends lots of time with you. She even remembers personal details about you. I'm really picky with my contacts and she has been so flexible about it. She also has the best prices on them. Too bad she doesn't take my insurance, but I rather pay extra out of pocket. I call her every couple of months, leave a credit card on file, and she ships your order out in a week. I agree with the other Yelpers, she never tries to push any new products or glasses on you. I have the same pair for like 3 years now! She even warranties the lens for any changes in prescription. I refuse to go elsewhere. She really does take care of you. read more

I've been coming to Dr. Cheng for a long time and it has been a wonderful experience every single time! She addresses my concerns and gives thoughtful recommendations on eye care. I also want to give a shout-out to the office staff as they are always hands on and patient when I chose frames and inquire about insurance issues. read more

The best Optometrist I have been in the Bay Area. She is a graduate from a top school, she isn't pushy, and her prices are reasonable. Most Optometrists are like Dentists - the see you as a fountain of money, so they will often try to oversell you. Dr Geri Cheng is better than that - she gives me the feeling that she is actually listening. If you tell her you want prescription sunglasses made out of glass she will do it - instead of trying to up-sell you to a pair of plastic UV/IR/Anti-reflection coated plastic lenses that cost three times as much, but will get scratched in less than six months. She is also reasonable priced - much more so than all but the "major" chains. She will also take your old frames and re-fit the lenses, instead of trying to get you to buy new stuff each time your eyes change. If you know you are going to get three or five sets of lenses, tell her and you will get a discount. Reasonable priced eye examinations. Takes many of the insurance types. You can get waited on with your eyeglasses by a OD - instead of some counter service creature. Great experience. read more

Super nice, friendly, efficient, honest and knowledgeable. I was having issues with my eyes and she worked with me to find the right contacts, which took awhile, and all in all it was a great experience! I would recommend her to anyone looking for an optometrist. read more

"Something About Geri" I started seeing Dr. Geri Cheng at Custom Eyes in 2002, when I lived in the Richmond district. Though I moved out of that hood a year later, I refuse to look for an optometrist where I live now. I don't care that I have to drive all the way from SoMa; it's worth it! Whenever I need new contacts, she has me test the newest, most breathable version before I commit to ordering a pack. She's smart, patient, kind and easy to talk to. And she's open weekends! read more

I actually enjoy going to Dr. Cheng's office. It's in a good location (for me, anyways) and she keeps her appointments very well. She's personable and very professional and genuinely seems to care about the well being of her clients. She answered all of my concerns about changing from glasses to contacts (eck!) and was very patient with my fear of poking myself in the eye. That and she explained my coverage to me. Awesome. She also has an umbrella that was lent me when a sudden downpour of hail threatened to kill me on the way out. read more

Wasn't sure if she was Dr. Geri Cheng, but the lady at the desk fix my Ray Ban and glasses for free cause I lost a screw for both of them... 'How much is it?' 'Don't worry about it. It's Free!' Wow... I can't believe it's free when it's really free... read more

Does anyone know if they are open during the shelter in place or conducting any business via phone/email? I tried calling, but the mailbox was full. Would like to order some contact refills. She is great, btw, I still make the trek to see her in the outer Richmond even though I now live in Oakland--that should tell you how much I like her as an optometrist! read more

Went here and had my both exams done. It turned out that my prescription hadn't changed and the doctor recommended that instead of wearing my glasses all the time that I use them when I need things to be especially clear. Since I am near-sighted in one eye and far-sighted in the other she explained that most people who have lasik get this done to their eyes on purpose. That made me feel much better. Dr. Cheng ordered me several pairs of contact samples to try and I am still attempting to find the most appropriate one for my eyes. Dr. Cheng is very patient and attentive. She listened when I expressed concern about my light sensitivity and how different contacts may affect that... This place is awesome! I like their proximity and hours. They have been great and I recommended that my mom try them too. read more

Wonderful, friendly service. The doctor was personable, and described the purpose of each procedure in depth. This was my first visit to an optometrist in which nobody surprised me with puffs of air into the eye. Dr. Cheng used a wand-like device in place of the violent puff, I hardly felt a thing. The entire eye exam was pleasant, and was done in no time! Will definitely return. read more

Geri is very nice. This location is also pretty calm and convienent. That is unless its lunch time or after school for the guys over at Washington High. Parking shouldn't be much of a problem during the day. Thanks to a message, I just recalled that Geri was very thorough and hands on in terms of making sure my glasses fit me just right. And so they did. read more

My very first visit to Dr. Geri Chang's office after I have been going to an eye doctor in San Mateo and my enperience was wonderful. Dr. Chang was super nice and made my visit quick and easy! My family has been going to Dr. Cheng's office since I was in Middle School. She is honestly the best. My family and I have been patients of Dr. Cheng for over 20 years and will have been 100% completely satisfied with her care and service. Dr. Cheng goes far and above baseline care and I think she's one of the best doctors around PERIOD! This office space is not gigantic nor have thousands of frames to choose from but I would NOT go anywhere else. I went through a tough period with my vision problems and Dr. Cheng above and beyond to help me through it all. I can't say that there are many doctors like Dr. Cheng. I am forever grateful for her services. read more

I've been going to Dr. Cheng for my optometry care since she opened many years ago. I completely agree with jeff b.'s review - Dr. Cheng is great at listening to your needs and doesn't ever make you feel that she is just trying to sell you anything. Her exams are comprehensive and I sometimes can't believe the amount of time she spends with me answering all my questions. Her rates are very reasonable and I feel good supporting a local business rather than a chain. Don't shoot me, but I've told her more than once that she should charge more for her exams given the amount of time she spends. This is especially considering that if I had trouble with my eyes during the year following an exam, she's checked them for free. It's great to find a health professional whom I trust to not recommend products and services merely to make a profit.... now if only I can find a dentist in S.F. like that! read more

Dr. Cheng is such a sweetheart! She's kind, so friendly, attentive, and patient -- just imagine my frustration trying to adjust from hard contact lenses to soft after 15 years!!! Dr. Cheng genuinely cares about her patients and it clearly shows. I don't have vision coverage, so knowing that I was going to pay out of pocket, Dr. Cheng hooked me up and made sure I was well taken care of. I know several people who have been coming to Dr. Cheng for years and years now and I totally understand why they're such loyal patients. Dr. Cheng is truly an amazing soul. read more

Dr. Cheng is seriously fantastic. She's the best doctor (of any kind) that I've ever been to. She's extremely friendly and personable and she's actually great to chat with. So many doctors are either silent when you get your checkup or they ask you questions, which they obviously do not care about the answers to. But not so with Dr. Cheng. She's genuinely interesting and interested in chatting with you while she works, making you forget the discomfort (or slight terror?) of having puffs of air blown into your eye (ahhhhh!!!!). I honestly could not recommend her more highly. read more

I refuse to go anywhere else. Geri and her staff are the best. She's really pleasant to talk to and will always give me her honest opinion. I never got that salesperson vibe from her. They make sure that I'm happy with whatever I leave with and never get inpatient when I'm trying out everything in the store. The girl at the counter helped me pick out a nice pair of Marc Jacobs glasses that fit my squarish face shape. The other man at the counter made sure the rested on my face perfectly. I now live in the east bay but like I said, I refuse to go anywhere else. read more

Dr. Geri Cheng and her assistant are very nice! If you don't have insurance or your insurance has no vision coverage, she will give you a super super deal. She is thorough and does not rush through your exams. I like her so much more than the ophthalmologist I saw at Stanford (they really really rush you at Stanford and I felt like my appointment was pretty useless there - might be because they overbook and not the doctor's fault, but still . . .). Thank you, Dr. Cheng!! You rock. read more

I've been going to Dr. Cheng for many years. She's very friendly and knowledgable. She sits and listens to any eye issues you may be having and follows up. Once I had a tear in my eyeball that was so painful and red. They were able to see me right away and she diagnosed the problem and prescribed me some eye drops instantly. I didn't have to pay for the visit too. She genuinely cares about each person she sees and doesn't upsell like others do. I'm almost blind and hate going to the eye doctor, but she makes it simple as ever. They're open on weekends too! read more

I moved here from Boston 2 years ago and am slowly building that go-to list. After having an awful experience at a fancy eye doc on Chestnut Street, Dr. Cheng was a breath of fresh air. Thorough, friendly, knowledgeable, fast & helpful. She will be my go to eye doc from now on! Yipee read more

Dr. Geri Cheng was professional, friendly, and thorough with the eye exam process. You can tell she is genuinely interested in getting to know her patients. Upon leaving, she also gave extra disposable lens to last through the end of the year. Very highly recommended! read more

Dr. Cheng is very professional, approachable and friendly. She is definitely the best!! I'm glad that i've moved to Outer Richmond a year ago and discovered her. She won't push you to get glasses in her store and she'll watch out for what's covered and what's not under your insurance (so that you pay less or none). Her office's staff is great too. There used to be a girl sitting in the front, but lately it is a guy. Regardless the gender of the receptionist, both of them are friendly and helpful!! read more
