I understand maybe it's simply because of the economic environment at this time. But the quality of food and portions have gone way down as well as the prices have gone way up. Someone in my party ordered a ham and cheese on a roll with no egg and they charged us for the egg and basically said well that's how the machine does it so that's what you have to pay. From the first time my daughter took me here this is the only restaurant we go to now. All the staff to the food are excellent I definitely recommend George's Restaurant in Torrington CT. "Inspiring Quotes & Food". My brother-in-law has been telling me for a while how great the food is at George's. He would say, "The steak tips are incredible and you have to try them." He invited me to go for breakfast Sunday to see for myself. Our wait was only about five minutes for a table. While standing there, I was uplifted by all the inspirational quotes on all the walls and the chalk board. There are more inspirational quotes hung throughout the restaurant on the warm burnt orange colored walls. The restaurant is very clean and the waitresses are really friendly. I didn't think to look over the whole menu because I opened it and immediately spotted my choice. My favorite breakfast with the steak tips. Steak Tips Benedict. I've been to quite a few of the best breakfast diners in Connecticut and I think George's might be even better. My breakfast was exceptional. Super tender flavorful steak tips on top of english muffins and poached eggs and smothered with a delicious hollandaise sauce. The homefries were crispy and well seasoned with sauteed peppers and onions and a hint of rosemary. My sister had the french toast and loved it. My niece had a bacon, egg and cheese on a bagel. My other two nieces both had big fluffy pancakes with bacon. And my brother-in-law shot for the stars. He went all out with the steak tips with eggs, homefries, rye toast and an order of pancakes. We all enjoyed our breakfast. George's also has a menu just for their selection of muffins. I didn't try a muffin, but when my parents go there my mother gets a dozen muffins to-go. I came to George's because a friend wanted to meet me here for breakfast, and I was concerned because it had a one star rating on Google. I was very pleasantly surprised, then, when I found that it had wonderful variety, fresh ingredients in food, and friendly, helpful service. They have a variety of yogurt muffins that looked great, I am gluten free at the moment so I didn't try those. I had a Mediterranean omelette that was delicious. George's is a family run business who take great pride in being welcoming and inviting to all people. We enjoy breakfast there at least 3 times a month if not more. The breakfasts are truly the best in the state. Eggs always made exactly the way you want and served by an amazing and friendly waitstaff, who recognize us and even remember what we order. Requests always honored. During the pandemic they have been respectful and taken it seriously, retrofitting the entire indoors, building a massive tent, and ensuring safety cooking methods. I like, let's say Dottie's in Woodbury who has a ridiculous "unmask our kids" sign inside on their hostess podium, and a bumper sticker insulting those who wear masks. George's takes its customers seriously and understanding that being safe will keep their customers coming and most of all, ALIVE. I was recently told at another local diner breakfast place, "no, we cannot make your home fries well done, because if she has eggs on the griddle, she might not be able to fit your home fries on it." What? Wait until your first set of eggs get cooked and lay down some home fries. This is just an excuse. My homefries can back to me barely cooked as if they were going to teach me a lesson. I did indeed learn a lesson. I learned to never eat there again. I went to George's twice, once on a Sunday and once on a weekday. I can't comment on the lunch as I only went there during breakfast hours. I ordered the house omelette and the Italian omelette. It's official. After 5+ years of regular visits... sometimes three days in a week... we're never coming back. We were patient through the transition to the new owners, however the food and wait staff have steadily gone downhill. The seasoned wait staff have been replaced with careless teenagers with no personalities. The cook is horrible. I've been here a couple times recently. I got egg whites which was a little different than I'm used to because they made it almost like an omelette instead of scrambled. Either way it was still good! I really love their home fries. Last time I went I got an omelette with peppers and onions. Delicious! I do think the portions are a little small for a breakfast place. Our service here has always been good though. I just think they need a little renovation done on the inside, doesn't really feel like a restaurant. It's a little monotone and blah looking. If there was a zero stars that is what they would get. We have been going here for years, but never again. A simple poorly done scrambled egg is the cause. Not only is the owner obnoxious if questioned but the overbearing daughter feels the need to step in to defend daddy's honor because she thinks it is her place to call customers rude...this is such a local joint that even locals can feel uncomfortable. This longtime establishment recently has gone through some changes. Food and service quality compromised due to owner transfers suffered. It's newest owners bring an experience that supercedes the original's. Owners ,staff, food quality have improved dramatically. I stop at this eatery often enough to notice differences and my last time (Saturday), was impressive. Horrible experience, we wanted to mix eggs Benedict, we were told we couldn't. Ok no problem. So we ordered traditional Eggs Benedict, the wrong order came out so we sent it back. The cook who I believe is the owner threw a fit and made us wait 15 mins and then asked us to leave. Eh....I guess its more of a local thing. I for one was less than impressed. The food was average and bland at best. The prices were actually pretty high, especially for breakfast in Torrington. The portions were about average and the service was decent so I guess its got that going for it. Unfortunately the decor looks like you stepped right into a truck stop kitchenette back in the 70's. It's essentially one big open room with cafteria looking tables, wood panelling and lots of dust. They have a number of your normal, breakfast options on the menu, but nothing else to write home about. My wife had a greek omlete which was a bit light on fillings and the way it was put together (no meat?), I had a breakfast wrap which was rather large but devoid of any real taste, and my mother-in-law had a short stack of blueberry pancakes which looked rather on the dry side. Not a place I'd recommend really but I guess if you're in a pinch and just feel like being lazy and going somewhere low-key this might be an option. read more
