I'm not sure if speak easy bars are always pretentious but George's Jeep was ridiculously pretentious- even for the Elian area. We drove a friend home in the area and she offered to buy us a drink At George's keep. It was right after a cowboy game so my husband was wearing a football jersey. When we were walking in the bouncer said to him "man you can't wear that shit in here". We thought it was a cowboys joke so we laughed and he said "im serious- take it off or leave." Okkkkk..... so my husband took it off since he had on an under shirt. When we got inside the place was filled with women wearing jerseys. So I have no idea why he made such a big deal to my husband about it. The atmosphere is true to a speak easy so it was pretty neat with the low lighting and lush seating and whatnot. We sat at the bar and ordered a Michelob ultra which cost us $6.... over priced, unfriendly.... can't say we care to ever go back. But they probably don't want us there anyways because we aren't boujee enough. read more

This bar was recommended by a friend who lives in San Antonio. The reason I am giving it one star is one, because I HAVE to rate it, and two, because we were met with an extremely rude host/door person. There was NO greeting, no "how are you," no "hi," or any common courtesy. His first words were LITERALLY "You can't sit inside, and I can't turn on the heater outside if you want it on to sit outside." I was whisked back into time, circa 2007 to a scene of "Knocked Up." I wanted to scream "Doorman, doorman, doorman!" but I also didn't think he was worth being arrested for. He didn't offer a menu, make eye contact, speak to us in any other way, but allowed a group of white college boys easily go into the building after telling us they were at capacity. I can't rate the drinks, or food because I didn't get past the host. I'm sure there are plenty of other places you can go to in San Antonio that will have way friendlier staff. I could not believe the disrespect I experienced from this establishment. I went on a Sunday and just wanted to sit on the patio for a drink with friends. I was told I was not welcome inside for a drink because I was wearing an nfl jersey. When I asked if I could sit outside on the patio I was told I was not the appropriate demographic looked for by the manager to dine there. I will not be returning to this bar. Very great cocktails and knowledgeable staff with good recommendations. Not gunna lie it's a lil douchey(sp?) but so is the whole beautiful soulless development inwhich it lies. Even with all the liquor they have a great beer selection and good happy hour. I had a Manhattan made with port and it was Delilah. The wife loved her so fresh and so clean. She rarely gets more than one of the same cocktail but prolly would have enough of these to drink till she dies - luckily it hasn't come to that. Inside is pretty cosy and classy with two bars. The cocktails aren't super quick because they are very precisely made and delicious. I really like the outdoor patio - it is spacious and I like that it is high up above the restaurants. With a March Madness game playing on the screens and a couple of unusually vocal fans, this place felt much more like a sports pub than the relaxed cocktail lounge/speakeasy I was expecting. The place got pretty packed around 10:30-11p (weekend). In my opinion, the drinks are average. Too strong for my liking, but once again, that's just me. The bartenders don't greet you or even smile at you even when you order kindly and tip. Not my type of environment, their attitudes are unwelcoming. Not sure how many people enjoy coming here. I've been a few times (4 or 5) and I've had the same experience every single time. I'm not a cocktail person really, but George's Keep is definitely the place I'll be returning to if a craving occurs. It's a bit hard to find, nestled on the second story in Eilan. And even then, once we walked in the door, there was another sign to go to the left towards another bar area. I'm not completely sure about the service outside (is there any?) or if they ever open up the entrance bar. Anyway...once we got to the back bar, we had pretty great service. Our bartender gave us his full attention as we were one of the few customers there so early in the evening. The drinks we got were all stellar. Price wise, we didn't really know what we were in for since they weren't listed on the menu...except for the happy hour prices which are definitely worth making it in time for. When we were leaving, it seemed like it was finally livening up a bit, and I wasn't too sure about the crowd. Seemed a little fratty or something, but whatevs. Still a cool bar. 2.75 stars. I haven't been impressed with the craft cocktail bar scene in San Antonio, and sadly, George's Keep was in line with my previous experience at Hidden Dragon Cocktail Lounge. Basically, expect tiny variations on classic cocktails in an extremely busy room coupled with loud music. The best drink I tried was the Jack-a-lope which basically was like a Whiskey Branch where ginger was switched out with cantaloupe juice (which was odd because the drink already had enough sugar). The Brown Derby wasn't half bad either (bourbon, grapefruit, simple syrup). What was bad is that I nearly had a cricket jump into my drink on the outdoor patio where I was forced to retreat based on the god awful music selection within the "lounge". Also, it's just odd that they have to crowd control this place with a bouncer. I get that this isn't the East Coast, but the biggest culture shock by far in San Antonio has been the inability to find anything even remotely similar to a more exclusive cocktail bar. Does this scene simply not exist in this entire city? Overall, it wouldn't matter because the city is great, but I can't say I'm not slightly disappointed. If you aren't really into cocktails, and if you like your expensive drinks with a side show of meat market, George's Keep is an excellent choice. read more

My first trip to George's Keep was last night to celebrate a friend's birthday. We parked across the street near the Merrill Lynch office building and and then asked the valet where to go from there. (The bar is located up the stairs above Piatti.) The Hobbit door is so whimsical! I love it! The staff were very welcoming and actually brought a drink menu over to our table. They don't have table service but the bartenders are efficient and friendly. The backroom can get really loud and it's dark in there, so after getting our beverages we went to the outdoor patio which was really nice. George's Keep is a little pricey but I think it's worth checking out if you like handcrafted cocktails away from downtown. read more

This place looks like a little part of Europe in San Antonio. The stairway and entrance, the patio tables and paintings inside are all reminiscent of a small modern bar somewhere in Europe. The cocktails are unique, and take time to order. On a Saturday evening it took our party of 9 people an average of 35mins to get our drinks. Everyone around us was complaining about the wait time for drinks. The bartender was flustered when we ordered 9 nine shots of something delicious in honor of the birthday boy. After the shots, people continued to order their beverages, and the dark haired bartender got even more flustered and said "alright,this night has gone to shit". My friend lives in the apartments at the Eilan and has raved about this place. I've never had the opportunity to go until last Friday and what a cool place. You walk in and feel like you've jumped back in time. I absolutely love the look of the place. It has that old speakeasy kind of look. Just different than any other place in San Antonio. You can tell the moment you see the front door. We looked at their cocktail menu which was another breed of its own. True mixologists. We tried several different drinks but my all time favorite was the Latin lover. It was simply delicious. Fell in love at first sip! The bartenders were very informative and helpful. I will try to be objective. I live in the area, and actually have a view of the bar patio. The place is trendy, the staff is nice, the bouncer is probably one of San Antonio's best The drinks are OK, they are expensive, they have a good beer selection, but this place is more ment to show off the creativeness of the bartenders. The crowd varies and comes in waves, there are nights where it is diverse other nights where it is evident that it is not. I usually take a friend (or date) there for a drink or two, as that's the perfect place to kick off the night. But I don't think the atmosphere is one for someone like me to want to stick around long. Personalities that go to this bar are very Type A. The girls are not difficult to chat up. I do feel that the male ego here is as its called up in Dallas "the 50k millionaire" I don't mean for this to be a blanket statement as a testatment to all men that visit this establishment, because I've met great people, but you will get a good percentage of men that act like they own the world, but in reality they are average (once again, type A). Overall a good place, I go there when my neibhors and I are bored and its happy hour. With an entrance fit for a Hobbit and a low-key sign, upon entering the bar, a calm ambiance will greet you. There is an outside area with patio seating and the inside bar is divided into two different wings with plenty of seating area. George's Keep offers their signature cocktail menu, but proudly serve other beverages. Upon ordering your drink, your bartender will craft you cocktail with great care. Watching them make your cocktail is an art. During my last visit, I ordered a Tequila Honeysuckle which consisted of three easy ingredients: tequila, honey, and lemon. This sweet but tangy drink, served in a rounded style martini glass, was delicious - it is easy to drink more! Also, they make a good Brown Derby and Sidecar. Absolutely love this place. The vibe is chill, and with an amazing happy hour, what more could you ask for. Bartenders are super friendly and they also definitely have a dedication to their craft, one bartender even read did the shots we ordered three times because they didn't come out right. The entrance can be a little bit difficult to find. You need to walk up the steps and to your left you will see a small door with a curved top that says George's keep to the side. I'm not sure if the front room is always close, but I think the back room is the room that opened up first for happy hour. Price: during happy hour cocktails were 5 to 6 dollars. All my San Antonio friends rave about this place and I just don't see it. I've been dragged to this place twice on my last two visits and both have been mediocre at best, much so that we end up bouncing to nearby Bar Louie after a round of drinks. Ambiance is very quiet, even on a weekend night at 11 pm. The place is very small and the ceiling is low, so I feel super claustrophobic when I'm in there and we always end up sneaking back out to the terrace if its not boiling hot and humid outside. Prices are high but then it's La Cantera so it's to be expected. Which brings me to one of the few good things: clientele. Very sexy, so if you are a predator on the prowl you will definitely have your choice of prey. Again, there are better options around the area, this just seems to be the cool place for now. read more

The worst service I've ever had. We were seated and then had to go ask the host for someone to come wait on us after sitting for 10 minutes. Our order was taken (very simple) and 10 minutes later the server came to ask us what our order was again. 20 minutes later, no drinks. A manager came and asked us if we had been helped, we explained the situation and were told we would get our receipt. Drinks came, we finished our drinks, then waited 20 more minutes before someone came to ask us if we had been helped. I was EXTREMELY disappointed. However, feel uncomfortable gong back after witnessing the bouncer handle an altercation with a guest quite unprofessionally. Caused a scene and cursed at the guest while the manager sat and watched. I believe the guest was mistakenly in the wrong to begin with, however ended up being treated quite unfairly in the end from what i saw. Didn't seem right. The late night crew didn't seem to have the most welcoming vibes. This is not to discredit any future service of this establishment but for them to revisit their perspective on individuals. Worst bartender experience in years. A bartender by the name of Miguel was working. I get there 45 minutes after my friends do. They are sitting at the main bar in barstools. I go and greet them and hang out for a drink. The bartender keeps making one sections drinks and none of ours or the people to our left. After around 30 minutes of waiting my friend Claudia who was there before me calls him by name politely and asks for 3 house shots and if I could please get a vodka soda. He comes back looks me in my eyes after ignoring me sitting right in front of him the whole time and says "dude order for yourself man come on" in disgust. I answered back with " I didn't ask her to do that and I've been sitting here patiently while you made 50 drinks and never looked up once at me once ....he then says "aye aye aye enough ...sh sh sh, what do you want to drink" and motions to hurry up. I repeated my order. Got one drink. Fast forward about an hour later he grabs a bottle and it slides out of his hand and shatters in the bar well area. The bar back tries to come over and inspect the ice and he yells "no it's fine it's fine it didn't get in the ice! And shoos him off...I didn't stick around to find out. closed out and headed to Pete's place. Far better experience there. I never leave reviews like this but when I tell you I was heated I was heated. You don't treat anyone like that and he clearly was not happy to be of service to anyone. Also he talked to his bar backs like crap and when a guy asked for apple juice he said he only helps paying customers and to ask the bar back for that kind of "stuff" The bar was fine but this bartender was way out of line and reckless. I really enjoy coming here for a drink or two. I came here after dinner w some friends on a Saturday night and it wasn't too crowded yet. We were able to get a booth right away. They have 2 bar available. They have a small drink menu or you can have them make whatever else you want. As the night goes on, I feel like their music gets louder. One of the nicest, upscale bars in the 1604/I10 area. Old school feel and design of the place makes you think that you are in a world long forgotten. The drinks are exceptional. I usually stick to my favorite, the old fashion, but they also have several seasonal specialty drinks that I have heard live up to the hype. This place is on the pricey side for San Antonio, but the ambiance and mixology make it worth it. The live music that is featured occasionally is a great touch. I would recommend to the owner that the feel of the bar is slightly ruined by the TVs that were installed in the last year or so. Great bar, keep up the commitment to quality drinks and the old-time feel and this place will be a winner in my book. read more

I came in with a party of eight on Friday June 8, 2018, and had the worst experience I've ever had at a bar. The bartenders were friendly, the patrons were polite. However, after drinking at George's Keep for nearly two hours one of the bouncers approached a member of my party and yelled at him for wearing a hat. Nobody had told us their rule on hats for the past two hours. We thought he was joking at first and when the member of my party asked if he was serious the bouncer tried to provoke him by getting in his face and challenging him to, "take this outside." Someone in his position should be skilled in deescalating situations rather than provoking a physical altercation. The manager was polite enough to reimburse each of us for the drinks we had ordered throughout the night but we will not be returning. read more
