This upscale-ish restaurant is located in the Elian Hotel at La Cantera. We picked this place for Restaurant Week because we wanted something new. We were greeted as soon as we entered. Valet is complimentary when dining at the restaurant. That is particularly helpful in this cold weather. When we entered the restaurant the dining area was empty. There were a few patrons at the bar but no one at any dining tables. Maybe a sign?? The reviews on Google and Yelp are all over the place. The decor is nice but the seating is a little outdated and worn. I can understand this, though, because I am sure they get a lot of family traffic being a hotel so close to Six Flags. Our waiter, Robert, came right over to take our order. He was friendly and personable. The Restaurant Week menu had two choices for each course, so my friend and I ordered everything so we could try it. First up, the appetizers were poblano and corn soup or heirloom tomato salad with blue cheese. The soup was delicious but was not very hot temperature-wise. The salad is a beautiful idea, but the tomatoes were just bad. They were out of season, mushy, and tasteless. I love tomatoes, so I was disappointed. Next up entrees. My friend had the braised short rib with beans and rice. I had the Redfish with rice and green beans. The short rib was excellent, but it came out at room temperature. Considering we were the only ones there that was a red flag. My fish was seasoned well, and I enjoyed it, but it was room temperature also. Is there a draft in the kitchen? Other reviews mentioned their food was not hot so it seems like a trend. For the amount you pay, the food should be piping hot when it comes to the table. Finally, we got to dessert. I had the creme Brulee cheesecake and my friend had the campfire dark chocolate torte. The desserts were delicious with no complaints at all. This place has a lot of potential, but there are too many restaurants in San Antonio, so you have to make a positive impact on your customers, so they want to return. read more

My husband and I celebrated the New Year at Sustenio's New Year's Eve party. The cold display, hot items, and carving station were nice. The desserts did not seem to be chef made but rather something purchased at the local Sam's Club. We expected more. The music was geared toward a younger crowd. My husband and I were here for both the Super Bowl and our 34th wedding anniversary. Our waiter/server was Hector. He was professional, courteous, and all things consultative in relation to the menu. ALL of our needs were met and the conversation was great when he could spare a moment. We enjoyed the classic wedge salad, the classic pizza with pepperoni, and the tangy & crispy wings which were both beyond satisfying. I'd encourage all to stop by for a visit. We had a phenomenal anniversary dinner at Sustenio. The experience we had from beginning to finish was wonderful. Nancy welcomed us in with smile and recommended the Culinary Week menu which didn't disappoint. The shrimp and poblano bisque, the red fish, and the cheese cake all exceeded my expectations. We visited after a long day of travel. Cody was so personable. There weren't a lot of patrons but all servers were attentive. The queso was tasty with the brisket. The brisket adds so much flavor. The homemade chips that come with the dish are really good as well. We also indulged in their combo pizza. It was fresh and not overly oily at all. While staying at the Elian Hotel and spa for the week we ate at Sustenio's. It's the third time I've been here in the last 5 yrs. The first time I came here I ordered a pizza and it was amazingly one of the best I've ever had, which was a brick oven baked with a crispy tasty crust. So just this week we've ate there three times and the staff, bartender, waitress and waiter have been wonderful! Last night we came in with a big group. Everyone in our group loved the food, environment and the service. The girl that waited on us, I believe her name was Jacqueline,was an exceptionally good waitress with excellent service and great personality. read more

Sustenio the restaurant inside Eilan Resort. the few times we've eaten here it has been good. this was pre-"pandemic". recently they've re-opened to full capacity and hours i believe. so our fingers were crossed it would still be good as some reviews stated otherwise. it wasn't busy. we got there just after they opened. my salad was good. apparently chicken cost $12 extra for a few dry chicken strips. overpriced to say the least. otherwise the salad was good. husband ordered the filet medium. the waitress even came back to confirm we understood medium to be a warm pink center. Little did she realize we are from the Texas panhandle. We know our beef and we know exactly what the meat is supposed to look like on the inside after cooking. in actuality she need to confirm this very question with the cook because the steak came out with NO pink whatsoever inside. none. zilch. nada. can you say overcooked? we did discuss it with the waitress and she informed the cook and manager. waitress offered to have re-done but husband declined. it was still edible and quite frankly i would've been done eating before he got his new meal but we did want them to know the cook was overcooking steaks and at the price they charge for them ... you want it cooked right !!! the manager eventually came over to the table. i honestly didn't think she was going to. they did offer up a free dessert. Lillia at the bar at the pool was very rude. Accused us of taking in drinks when we never did. Searched our bag without permission and also took it without permission as well. Never got our food. Waited for over an hour and still never got it because they claimed it was never put in even though we were charged. We will not be coming back. We booked Sustenio for Mother's Day. I had to download an app to do it and confirm ahead of time. I got several text reminders. Then, when we arrived they said Sustenio was undergoing renovations and that our reservation was for the Mother's Day buffet. I did not book that, but here I was with my family expecting a Mother's Day meal. Thus, we stayed. It was incredibly overpriced for what it was. $65 a person for what seemed like powdered eggs with a few bits of charcuterie. That does not include drinks, tax, or their automatic gratuity. We had 3 people eating from a buffet and incurred a 25% gratuity. Legally they are required to disclose automatic gratuity. They did not. We didn't even get menus. read more

I ordered the lunch special for $12.50. You get your choice of half a sandwich and your choice of soup or salad. I went with the smoked turkey club sandwich and the Texas Bluebonnet Salad. The food was really good - the turkey club sandwich was loaded up with turkey, smoked bacon (bacon was perfectly cooked - not too crisp), plenty of bean sprouts (which I love), tomatoes, avocado, pickles, and a decent sized slab of provolone. It was wrapped up with a very tasty toasted sourdough bread (who doesn't love sourdough?) and a dab of aioli (which I still believe is just a fancy word for mayo). The Texas Bluebonnet Salad was good - consisted of fresh greens, a couple of cherry tomatoes, and some red onion slices. The food was good, the ambiance was nice, but the waiter was clueless. Our group had several questions about items on the menu, but he wasn't able to answer most of them. Everyone was happy with their food, and the ambiance of the place, but the service really knocked them down to a three star rating. Very good food and very good service. Very convenient if you're staying at the hotel as we were. They also make good drinks. We had the brisket queso which is always good. I did notice that many of the chairs are looking pretty worn and old, to be an upscale restaurant in an upscale hotel I would think an upgrade is needed. read more

On a recent weekend, my brother and his wife made Sustenio the finale of our visit. It was knock-out superb! Who was exceedingly happy fr. brunch? My super taster brother, his very picky eater wife, 11 y.o. refined food eater, 9 y.o. beige food eater, 6 y.o. refined food eater, diabetic paternal grandmother, mostly vegetarian maternal grandmother, and me (yoga teacher w a long history of all yoga eating cliches). Highlights: Lox is butter soft, not salty, and the fav of my brother and I. Creme Brûlée, as all the desserts) was a Japanese level of sweetness (i.e. not very sweet. Wonderful.) is the fav of the two kids w the sophisticated palates. Charcuterie Candied jalepenos! Winter Salad -The SIL who NEVER NEVER eats vegetables (she's a meat-only gal) had three servings of the winter salad 0.0 So, guessing that was her fav. My brother and I wondered if hell froze over. I want to go here every time I go to SA!! Service: The prime rib guy was above and beyond. The 4'10" grandmother couldn't reach the desserts. He stepped out from behind his station and initiated assisting her. Additionally, he started to slice a monster size of prime rib for me -as in, he wasn't sexist about what kind of slice I get! I went ahead and asked for an adjustment to a much more modest size, only bc I had already enjoyed so much lox. Our server was good when there, but a long absence when we didn't know about the water pitcher being fully accessible and many of our glasses had been empty for uncomfortably long. All the staff were generally pleasant, relaxed, and of the qualities you want when upscale brunch buffeting. I wanted to love this gorgeous restaurant in the gorgeous Eilan Hotel, I really did. I'll start with the positives: besides the beautiful resort that is home to the stylish and elegant Sustenio, the service was very friendly and personable. As for dinner... another positive: they had an excellent wine list! My friends and I shared a bottle of one of my favorites, Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon. Two in our group ordered and enjoyed the Chicken Fried Steak. But I and my best friend had the ribeye, and, although I could tell it was well-aged, it lacked the fat and marbling that "makes" a ribeye. There was, literally, no delectable fat tip, no fat edge, but lots of gristle. Even more criminal, it was not seasoned. AT ALL. We both agreed that the texture was dry and tough, and no amount of salt and pepper could save it. It was quite close to being the worst steak I've ever had, and a quick tour of my reviews can illustrate how much steak I've had. Others at the table commented on the fact that the Brussels sprouts were overdone, but I did enjoy the mushrooms. In fact, that was, for the most part, my dinner, since I didn't eat most of my steak. Prior to the entrees, we had ordered a dozen gulf oysters, but they did not taste "right." Thankfully, our server returned them to the kitchen and brought out the East Coast oysters, which were better... more briny. When we arrived, we'd noticed that they had a Sunday Brunch and considered returning the next day to check it out. Let me start by saying I had much higher expectations for Sustenio. My colleagues and I had brunch reservations for noon, for which we were promptly seated and I was impressed. What drew me to Sustenio was the unlimited mimosas, which were shifty. Some were good, some were weak, some were strong. Honestly just all over the place. As for the food, I was extremely disappointed. The lamb was incredibly gamey, the bacon was chewy and tasted like it had been microwaved, the pancakes were doughy and it seemed like I had flour in my mouth. To top it all off, the prime rib was dry and there was no au jus. Desserts were subpar at best. On top of all of this, the service was beyond awful. Our server brushed us off, took forever to refill our mimosas, and was even a little stand offish whenever we would ask for things. All in all, this was a bad experience. I only give two stars because I will return to try their dinner or lunch menus. Hopefully I have better luck with a non-buffet style meal. read more

Had dinner here last night and it was great! I'll start with the "Meh" item. Appetizer wise, we had the faux gras mousse with jalapeño jelly. Definitely Interesting in flavor but it was not what I was looking for.. It had a strange, almost metal-y like flavor if that makes sense. Would not order it again or recommend it. The seasonal ceviches are okay. I had the salmon, pineapple and avocado one (all the other ones sounded really sweet). You could barely taste the pineapple and the portion was in pretty small for the $10 price tag. (See picture) The WOW item was the buffalo sweet breads, first time having sweet breads and I'm a fan! Perfectly cooked bite size nuggets covered in buffalo sauce and blue cheese crumble. The pear salad was also delicious! If they have it on the menu. Get it. For entrees, we had the USDA Prime Bone-In 20oz Cowboy Ribeye with fried curly onions. The steak was tender and flavorful. But honestly.. Too many curly onions filling the plate for $58. Would've much rather have some potatoes or veggies. ( see picture) Also had the short rib carnitas over cauliflower purée and asparagus. DELISH. That cauliflower purée alone was BOMB. Tried the tacos ($3) as well, the fried oyster with jicama slaw and the 72hour-brisket taco. Both delicious! Side of crispy Brussel sprouts was also pretty good! Lastly, had the mascarpone cheesecake which had a lot of interesting components, like a boozy peach sorbet and citrus gel. Would order it again. All in all. I'll be back. We came last year for Christmas dinner and had such a great experience we decided to come back for Thanksgiving. For $350 for four adults we were VERY DISAPPOINTED!! The service was terrific as usual, but the food was TERRIBLE!!!! I didn't want to complain while I was there because it was Thanksgiving and I was with my mom, stepdad and boyfriend. Our seating was at 2pm and it felt like they had run out of everything and what was left was scraps. For $350 this is just unacceptable!! The sweet potatoes had coconut and some cranberry or something and I didn't like it. The stuffing had too much sage and didn't taste good to me either. The prime rib was good and the turkey was ok. The mashed potatoes were very thin and I didn't like them either. The deserts were small bites, to me, Thanksgiving ahould be slices of pie. We like the creme brulee in a tiny cup, but they only had a few left. Me and my mom got one and when we asked for more for my stepdad and boyfriend they said they didn't have anymore since we were the last seating. They had a beautiful presentation, I'll give them that, but even the meat, cheese and fruit table was not that great. The fruit was not very good, the watermelon tasted mushy and the other fruit was just ok. My bad for coming to a brunch which I didn't have any of the breakfast items, I wanted to concentrate on the traditional Thanksgiving items. They just missed the mark for me totally. For what we paid I expected better. I think that was probably our last time there, lesson learned. read more

Had an amazing dinner tonight. Ordered the scallop and filet surf and turf. The scallops were out of this world and cooked perfectly. The icing on the cake was the camp fire dessert. Our friends have chosen Sustenio to celebrate their birthday. We met at the impressive Eilan's lobby. We were greeted by a lovely lady, and our table was ready waiting for us. While waking through, I noticed the handsome bar that tickled my palate and prompted me to order a Vesper. After a while drinks arrived... I tested mine... it was undrinkable:: sweet and likorish, but I have to admit that the temperature and the lemon twist were marvelous. Apparently the barman did not have Lillet and created this concoction instead. Promptly, I switched to a glass of French rose. Well, stuff happens, no biggie... Lunch menu was brief but appealing. We ordered calamari to nibble in a meantime. It arrived and it utterly perfect! Complements to the chef! I settled on pozole and blacken salmon as a main entry. Pozole looked a bit tired, tasted like a canned soup, very salty. A fish would die of uremia at that level of salinity... simply not edible. I mentioned to our waiter, and she confirmed, as she tasted it earlier, moreover mentioned to the chef (no comments). Salmon was resting on a bed of sautéed veggies. The fish was dried, the veggies mushy, most likely reheated. They both shared one thing, which was a total lack of flavour. I love this restaurant. We are staying at the Éilan hotel and had breakfast there the first morning. The Big Texas breakfast comes with eggs, choice of meat, biscuit and gravy, and pancakes. I shared that plate with 2 other people. My mom and I also went to the happy hour one night (4-7pm) and had some food/drinks. We ordered the shishito peppers, which were AMAZING. I didn't think they were spicy at all, and the sauce that comes with it is delicious. I ordered the white sangria and my mom ordered the lemon drop martini. Our bartender was awesome and he even made us a shot that we described, and he made it perfectly without having done it before. Another night, my family and I all had flatbread pizzas which were delicious and cheesy. My favorite was the mushroom flatbread. read more
