We went to Whiskey Cake for Father's Day Brunch. I'm glad we were able to snag a last minute reservation cuz it was jam packed! When we checked-in, there was a 2hr wait! Located in La Cantera and adjacent to Perry's, it's a large location but parking can be a bit tricky at times. It's loud, so don't come here if you're looking for quiet and intimate. More or less a hang out, kick it with friends kinda vibe. By the door, they have chewy caramels that you can nosh on while waiting for your table or to grab on your way out. Maybe we did both? lol they even sell some small apothecary type stuff as well. Ok let's get to the food! We got the crab cake and the colossal cinnamon roll to start. The kids loved the colossal cinnamon roll. Perfectly balanced with a toffee sauce and spiced pecans. Husband wanted savory so he got the crab cake. It's not Maryland style but it uses gulf crab and a mustardy-seed mix. He and the eldest really enjoyed it! Me, I liked the pickled onions and frisée. I got the steak & eggs hash with a sunny side up egg and medium steak. The steak was just right and had a good flavor. The shishito peppers could've used a touch of salt but they were a good contrast to the crispy fried potatoes, which were large chunks by the way. If only I could have a whole saucier of the avocado hollandaise . It was delicious on the potatoes and the steak! The shrimp and grits were definitely diff from the version we had last year but we liked it! Very vibrant and fresher tasting! The eldest had chicken and waffle. Comes with 2 tenders, 2 eggs your way (she chose sunny side), 1 waffle, syrup and creamy sausage gravy. I normally don't care for sausage gravy but this was NTS! The youngest had the kids Macaroni and cheese, which comes with your choice of 1 side (we chose green beans). We were pleasantly surprised to see it also came with carrots, which she happily ate. Got to visit whiskey cake with my family for the first time to celebrate Mother's Day early. We went for brunch. Since it was still early there was plenty of parking, especially since it is a mall parking lot. We had a reservation for 1015 and the place already seemed full. I really enjoyed how the restaurant looked on the inside, especially the bar area. I went for the brunch sandwich to eat. The sandwich was good, but very sloppy. It fell apart as I was eating it. Our group was huge, they sat us at a high table in the middle of the place, it was a great vantage point to the kitchen area. It was chaotic but exciting. Most recently I returned for lunch to celebrate a friend's birthday and we both enjoyed the amazing food, delicious pressed juice flight, and top notch service!!! Shame on me for not remembering our servers name (blame perimenopause!!!), but the Seattle native made the lunch magnifique!! I really LOVED the pressed juice flight!! I am a huge fan of pressed juice, but always have a hard time selecting just one. This allowed me to sample them all and find a new favorite! All were good in their own right, but my list from #1 down: Little Pink Drink, Ruby Slipper, Jessica Wabbit, and Hulk. I had the hummus for appetizer (again) and loved it just the same!! I cannot count how many birthday dinners and brunches I have celebrated at Whiskey Cake and that alone tells you everything. This is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. The atmosphere is chic and industrial with a bar that feels like a cross between the Beauty and the Beast library and a Hemingway era study. Edison bulbs antique furniture and warm wood tones make it feel like you have stepped into another time. Every table is candle lit which instantly creates a cozy old world vibe that never misses. The food always delivers and it is rarely the same twice. Our server shared that the menu changes about once a month and many ingredients are farm to table and locally sourced. You can taste the difference and I love that it supports the community. We started with the deviled eggs which were exactly how a deviled egg should be. Creamy balanced and topped with a small frite that adds the perfect salty crunch. I ordered the Guava Gimlet and it was spectacular. Bright citrusy and tropical all at once. A true gem. I had the fish and chips and they were everything I hoped for. Fresh buttery fish in a beautiful beer batter with lemon and malt vinegar. Crispy well seasoned fries sealed the deal. My husband had the salmon with mushrooms greens and a creamy sauce that completely elevated the dish. The real star is the Whiskey Cake. Always available and always unforgettable. Happy New Year my fellow Yelpers... Right before Christmas, my wife and I were at La Cantera to get some last minute shopping done. After all of our shopping was done, our stomachs began to grumble. I looked at the options around, browsed menus, and Whiskey Cake looked like a delicious option. Whilst on my walk to the restaurant, I ran into my sister and brother in law, and encouraged them to join. We all walked in and were seated right away. A very modern looking restaurant and bar with a somewhat rustic appeal. We were seated and handed menus. The friendly waitress asked if we had been there before to which we stated we had not. She enthusiastically explained the menu, explained their ingredients, then took our drink orders. We perused the menu while drinks were being fetched. Looking over the menu I saw many different delicious options and had a hard time picking something. Then, my selection jumped out at me. I am a huge fan of chicken and waffles, and there it was on the menu. Looking around a saw other diners eating it and it looked amazing. The waitress came back and we ordered. My brother in law opted for the chicken melt sandwich, my sister pancakes, my wife a breakfast dish, and me chicken and waffles. We all had a nice visit while we waited on our food. I was very excited for mine. In good time, our food arrived. All of the dishes looked amazing. The chicken melt looked huge, the pancakes looked amazing, the breakfast dish looked nice, and my chicken and waffles looked like they could be one of those pretty pictures in a magazine of food that is picture perfect. My brother in law was very quiet and scarfed his down. No complaints. My sister enjoyed her pancakes, but was not a fan of the super thick and super dense texture. The pancakes were a good half inch thick each. My wife said hers was just your basic breakfast dish with no complaints. She was not a fan of the chicken sausage. Now for mine, I was absolutely satisfied. Every bite was amazing. The chicken was juicy and crispy, and the waffle offset the saltiness with maple sweetness. The savory gravy was also delicious and I kept alternating between the sweet syrup with the hearty gravy. Every single bite was amazing. This now is my favorite chicken and waffle dish I have ever had in my life. It took me a while, but I polished my plate clean. I was absolutely, positively, amazed and stuffed. We paid our bill and were gone in good time. Great food, great company, and a great day. Could not ask for more! I highly recommend Whiskey Cake, and will be back. We ordered a couple of non-spirited drinks, too much food for one dining experience, and carried homes lots of leftovers. Well I finished my left overs for dinner . We started our tastebud experience with their cinnamon roll with roasted pecans. D*** just the best we've ever tasted so far in the US. Our entrees were fish and chips plus the prime rib and Gouda. We started with the crab fritters and two drinks. The drinks were strong but tasty, so I was one and done but not in the way where I know I'll have a headache after. The fritters were good but next time I'd probably go for the fried green tomatoes! The entrees were magic, I had the fish and chips and it was so flavorful and delicious. We haven't been here in many years and thought we'd try it for a graduation celebration..we were a party of 8 on a Tuesday night and the place has a really cool vibe when you walk in...However, our experience was mediocre, which was completely unexpected given all the nice reviews. It took a while for the waiter to come over and greet us. He was nice, but not very attentive throughout the evening. When we dine at higher priced restaurants, we at least expect to be checked on a few minutes after the food gets there to make sure it came out right. He never did that and we had to flag him down to get some things missing. Also, one hamburger came out medium rare and it was ordered with no pink...that was not edible and we didn't have a chance to have the waiter rectify, since he never checked in. We came after taking our son shopping for a graduation fit. I feel lk the menu gets smaller and smaller each time we come lol, it def changes but maybe leave some of the dishes permanently. So my bf and son got the chicken and waffles, my oldest got a 14oz steak I believe it was and I got the shrimp and rigatoni. I did not care for my dish, the shrimp was cold compared to the pasta, which was burning hot so idk if the shrimp was cooked quicker and they were waiting in the pasta so threw it in the microwave? And the pasta was over cooked, it tasted very rubbery. We had a few drinks as well and decided to get a margarita tower. I'm going to have to pass on that if we ever go back in the future bc I def do not think they add the right amount of tequila for the portion of the rest. (AUGUST 2025) First you will do a stair climber exercise to get to the restaurant if you parked on the lower level parking lot like us. This will come in handy when you decide to get a slice of whiskey cake later. I felt like Rocky Balboa once I got to the top and the building was like a mecca of achievement with the Sun beaming and everything. Upon entry, almost every decoration in this restaurant incorporate live plants or herbs. The interior was like a cross between a whiskey distillery and your living room. While we waited for the host, I ate one piece of Slo Poke caramel candies for the first time and grabbed a few more because they were so good! The bar wall here is SICK! It was like a candy store for alcohol. I think whatever drink you wanted, they could make it! The lights from the ceiling were encased in ropes which was pretty cool. At our table was a light bulb filled with water that housed live rosemary. My bestie ordered candied bacon. When I bit down into it, it was still warm and sort of melted in my mouth in a savory sweet bliss. I ordered a crispy chicken salad instead of chicken and waffles because I really wanted to try the chicken which did not disappoint. It was well seasoned and perfectly crisp. The Speakeasy Margarita I ordered had me speechless. It was probably only the second drink during my 5 day visit in San Antonio that had actual alcohol I could taste in it. And it was Grand Marnier at that so a perfect way to end my trip! And now for the REAL reason for the visit, The Whiskey Cake. When our waitress sat it down, I snapped several pictures of its diabetical glory. Our waitress even gave me more house made whipped cream to add to my A1C. Each bite was rich. Came to Whiskey Cake as soon as we landed in San Antonio. We are visiting from Florida to meet my sister's husband's family and this is where my sister and her husband suggested we meet for lunch. We started with the grilled snap peas (sounds boring, but they were unique and INCREDIBLE) followed by the chicken and cheese sandwich, kale salad, brussel sprouts (unbelievable) and charred vegetables (mediocre - not enough variety of vegetables and lacking flavor). We topped off the meal with the legendary Whiskey Cake which, by and far, stole the show. Would strongly recommend starting your next meal here with the whiskey cake and then ordering your entree. Ambience 4/5: I removed one star because of the seating as we were close enough to reach over to our neighbors and take a bite from their plates. Service 5/5: our server was friendly , professional and checked on us throughout our brunch. Food 4/5: I ordered the crab Bennie and my wife got the Croque madam. Overall my dish was good though the eggs were slightly over poached and the crab cakes more doughy from all the bread crumbs. Fruit reminded me of a cafeteria fruit cup. Nice place with pretty interior, good food, drinks and service. On a Friday night there was a 45 min wait but we were able to instead get a reservation for 8:30 and arrived for the reservation time. Ordered a smoked chicken salad and the French dip sandwich with fries (smoked tri tip dip). The fries are amazing! The salad was a little heavy on the dressing but otherwise awesome with fresh bacon, grilled chicken, avocado and a boiled egg; will just get the dressing on the side next time. They also have a good amount of non alcoholic, juice type drinks (Ruby slippers was delicious) in addition to their whiskey bar, beer and wine selection. Nice old fashioned! read more

My first time at this location and we came with a party of 15 for a birthday party. We had a reservation for 6:30PM and we all showed up on time but we were not seated until 45 minutes later since there was 1 table that was just sitting in the middle of the row of tables that were reserved for us. Outside of this hickup of having to wait even though we were on time, the service went well. Our server was on top of bringing us what we needed and asked for- plus taking our orders. Everything here was good- I got my usual Chicken and waffles and it was just as good as I remember! Though I think the chicken tenders were alittle small but they were still good and the eggs were moist! I got their whiskey cake and it was so good! I love it and enjoy it every time. I'd definitely come back again if I'm in the area and I'm so glad that Houston has a whiskey cake also for me to go to instead of having to travel to San Antonio. read more
