We made a 6:15 pm reservation on a Saturday to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. The restaurant was busy, but not loud. We could talk comfortably at a normal volume, which already put this place ahead of a lot of spots on a weekend night. Service set the tone immediately. Our server, Mario, was excellent. Kind, professional, attentive without hovering, and his recommendations were spot on. On top of that, the entire staff signed an anniversary card for us, which was a genuinely thoughtful touch. The manager, whose name I unfortunately did not catch, stopped by our table, congratulated us, and treated us to a dessert and two glasses of champagne on the house. That kind of hospitality is rare and it mattered. We started with the deviled eggs. They were overfilled in the best way and topped with maple bacon that complemented them perfectly. We also ordered a bowl of clam chowder. It was not overly creamy, had small chunks of clam, and was well seasoned. All it needed was a little black pepper, which is an easy fix. For entrées, my wife ordered the redfish and I had the Maui steak. The redfish was fresh and cooked perfectly, not dry at all, finished with a light lemony butter sauce. The couscous was properly cooked and well seasoned, not bland, and the asparagus had a subtle grilled, almost barbecue-like flavor that worked really well. My Maui steak was a 16-ounce boneless ribeye in a tangy marinade with hints of garlic and pineapple. The balance was excellent. Tender, juicy, and cooked a true medium rare. It came with smashed potatoes that were creamy and smooth without being thick or dry. Exactly how they should be. Dessert sealed it. The carrot cake was outstanding. Warm, soft, moist, not overly sweet, with fine shreds of carrot and nuts throughout. Honestly, it is arguably the best carrot cake I have ever had. Overall, this was a great experience. Service was top-notch. The manager makes regular rounds to check on tables, which shows real leadership. There are cards at the front listing the manager, assistant manager, and chefs by name, which signals pride and accountability. The only downside is the interior lighting. It is slightly dim and takes a moment for your eyes to adjust. That said, the staff more than makes up for it with warmth and professionalism. Always love eating here...the servers are fantastic and welcoming! The salads are huge and shareable. If you're sharing, they'll even split it for you before they bring them out. This trip we shared a wedge salad and my husband got his usual, which is the cheeseburger with no bun and fries. Always good and their seasoning shows off the yummy flavor of the patty. I tried something of the specials menu...steak fillet, crab cake and mashed potatoes. It was all delicious and I think the crab cake was one of the best I've ever had...nice chunks of crab and a yummy remoulade for dipping. We went to celebrate a friends birthday and had a large group. They weren't able to sit us together but that was ok because they made it feel seamless. I wish I could give this place 6 stars! My wife and I decided to have a date night and try J. Alexander's and I can't believe we haven't been here before. First, the server was absolutely amazing. She was kine, funny and she made sure we had everything we needed the whole time. I finished my water once... And she came by 15 seconds later for a refill. And she apologized. She was so attentive. The food was also pretty awesome. I had the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich, my wife had sea food pasta. My chicken was so good. I haven't had chicken like that in forever. My husband and I took my mom to J Alexander's for her birthday. As soon as we were seated, the table booth seats were still dirty and there were fries on the floor. The waitress came over immediately and asked what she could get started for us. We hadn't even had a chance to look at the drink menu. Ultimately my husband ordered the New York strip and it came out overcooked and tough. I ordered the steak and fries and my steak was overcooked as well. My mom had the prime rib though and enjoyed it. We went to tip on the bill and my husband realized we were underpaying. When we brought it to the server's attention, we got excuses. There was no apology or thanks for catching the mistake and being honest about it, just excuses. Our interaction with the manager was just as awkward. He came over to ask how dinner was and we said fine (I didn't want to complain since my mom's meal was fine and it was her birthday). The manager proceeded to ask if we were related to the server and we said no (it explained the lack of attentiveness from the server). My husband told the manager he thought the table next to us was her family. The manager kind of laughed and asked if we were setting him up. No, we aren't setting you up.... Overall, my mom had a great time but dinner was a bust for my husband and I and I am not sure we will return. On the positive side: The carrot cake is the birthday dessert. It is fantastic. Visited J Alexander's for the first time and it did not disappoint. We were greeted warmly and promptly, then seated immediately. We had reservations so I'm sure that helped. It's a beautiful establishment with soft lighting and lots of natural light as well. The fully stocked bar was a few feet away from dining area which was perfect so as to not hear what ever was on TV during dinner. Our server was friendly and quite efficient as he shared some of his favorites on the menu. We started with cocktails and a spinach dip appetizer. The cocktails were refreshing and the dip was delicious. Our entrees included a steak w/ smashed potatoes which was juicy and delicious. The other entree was a seafood pasta that included shrimp, crab and scallops. The pasta was creamy and had a little kick to it which elevated the taste. Exceptional service and incredible food. Our cocktails were delicious, my steak and potato were cooked to perfection, and my husband really enjoyed his french dip sandwich. The carrot cake was suggested to us (even though we aren't really big carrot cake people), and wow, did it deliver. Served warm with a delicious icing, it was shockingly better than the chocolate ganache cake (which was delicious on its own). Our server (Gavin) really stole the show, though. We've dined in some exceptional places, but his attentiveness and demeanor pushed this meal into our all-time top three. Incredible for a chain restaurant. Been to a few locations for J. Alexander's. This location is a bit smaller than the ones I'm familiar with but the interior is refined if not a little plain Jane. It is still very nice for date night though. The menu is American comfort food with a more modern flair. I had a steak that was pretty decent. Service was fine but nothing outstanding. I would say that for the price point, it could be better but it's not bad. A decent choice for dinner but don't expect to be wowed. read more

Tonight's dinner was perfect from the friendly staff, to the ambiance of the restaurant and of course the food and drinks. Highly recommend the wedge salad to start, it was delicious. The bread and butter were brought out super fresh and hot. But the star of the evening was the delicious Tuscan steak, cooked to perfection with a side of mashed potatoes. "Post Holiday Shenanigans" This year my company decided to expand our reach in San Antonio and ventured a little further out for our Post Holiday Meal. After a few other site visits, I decided to request this venue because of the size of the upper area that could house around 60 plus guests. I conducted a site visit of the venue and was greeted by the hostess station and spoke with the manager Archie. He gave me a walkthrough of the space and after a few phone calls back and forth, and a secured reservation, we arrived on Saturday evening for our event. The cold outside had us huddling around the bar, while more guests arrived, but the bartender had the spirits flowing to get our party started. I highly recommend the strawberry virgin mojito. When about 15 guests were in the bar area, the hostess led us to our area, where the menus were laid out, candles were lit and the lights were dimmed to set the mood. The Jazz music in the background was lowered just enough for light conversations among friends. The staff was SPECTACULAR and I'd like to highlight the teamwork and leadership of Marlysa, Alicia, Nya and Christopher. They were ready and willing to assist our larger party and had drinks out within minutes. Because of the interstate construction, many of our party goers were running behind, so we ordered chips for the tables. While I understand inflation, we all agreed that $15 for two handful of chips was a bit much, but enjoyed the fresh tomato salsa and queso. The guests started arriving and the food orders were received in a quick and orderly fashion. Our wait staff stayed near and ensured all guests were taken care of and the night was running smoothly. My boyfriend and I ordered the New York Steak and Macaroni and Cheese, as well as, the Barbecue Baby Back Ribs with the orzo and wild rice and fries. While orders came out correctly, my fries were cold, and I did get a few complaints about inaccurate temperatures on the steaks. ( menu stated they would try to cook as close to customer's request) We knew that a larger party would be a bit hard and I applaud the chefs in the kitchen for putting out the orders accurately and quickly. I had to move the star power down one because of the comments about the food, but all in all, I surveyed laughter, an attentive staff and food disappearing off of plates. My ribs were delicious and I was pleased with my sides and my babe enjoyed his meal. All in all, we had a terrific event. The restaurant was packed and still pumped out food to new arriving guests. Very welcoming and helpful staff. Our waitress was so sweet and helpful in explaining items on the menu (Jacque). She recommended a yummy drink as well that I loved (Whale Flower). I got the Tuscan Steak, very flavorful and tender. It's a big portion of food for a petite person such as myself so keep that in mind. My husband got the NY Strip and Mac n Cheese. He had no complaints, says the mac n cheese was delicious. The Tuna Stack is my favorite, i ate most of it by myself & finished it off with the spoon (don't judge me) lol. As a surprise, a friend invited me to join her at J. Alexander's. I had previously eaten at the J. Alexander, Quarry location. Truthfully, I had not been impressed. So I wasn't expecting great things from this location. Thus, I was mightily surprised, to find their food enjoyable and excellent service. We ordered from their brunch menu and I had the Eggs Benedict with Canadian bacon, breakfast potatoes, and fresh fruit. I did not care at all for the Canadian bacon and this could've been just me, but it was too fatty for my taste. I actually took it off to eat the eggs. However, the rest of the meal was pretty good. The eggs were perfectly done. The potatoes were delicious and the fruit fresh. We also shared a slice of carrot cake, which was excellent. Considering how underwhelmed I had been with the other location, I truly enjoyed my food, the service and the place. Nicely decorated, airy and clean. I would absolutely return. read more

We shared the artichoke appetizer (still one of my favorites), a wedge salad, and a fabulous French dip. It's a lot of food and portions are generous. I've now officially been here twice (adhering to my cardinal rule wherever possible); once for a dinner date and once for lunch. Although I don't remember what we had, I recall dinner with my wife having been a pretty good experience. This is definitely a good "date night" location. I remember the service being friendly and fast, the food being good, and the meal being worth the money (which is found less and less these days). I'd defined go back here for dinner. Lunch, however, was not as impressive. Service was still fast and friendly; our waiter checked on us at the right intervals. I opted for the burger, which was good, but I'm a "burger guy", and I tend to be hard to impress when it comes to my favorite. Overall, you definitely get your money's worth. Wife & daughter took me here for my birthday for an early dinner (3pm). It received really good reviews online so we figured we'd try it out. Online, it seemed like it was trying to be an upscale steak/fine dining restaurant, but while some clientele put off business casual vibes, apparently there is no dress code. Staff were very professional & polite. Service was quick at that time of day. Drinks came out quickly (no sweet tea?) as did the appetizer (Spinach Queso was good, but some of the chips were heavy on the salt). The food was very "ok". I ordered the Steak Maui (ribeye med rare). The steak was supposedly around 14oz but at least 2-3oz of it was fat (my dogs loved it). Steak was slightly under cooked for my taste, but mainly due to it being marinated, so no complaint. It tasted of nothing but marinade (running theme here) - was hard to taste & enjoy the actual meat. The smashed potatoes were 2 bites of salt & the rest bland - did not eat them (however my daughter thought they were fine). She ordered the Brasserie Chicken. She liked it well enough but I found the chicken to be a little too thin & the breading tasted of grease. Very strong flavored lemon sauce, which was good, but because the chicken was thin, you did not taste it at all. Lastly, my wife ordered a roasted chicken salad (not sure which one). Again, she liked it well enough but I thought the bite of chicken I tried tasted like it had been sitting for awhile waiting to be served (tender but dry) & the flavor was a little heavy on the seasoning side (again, couldn't taste the actual chicken). She ate around half of it. For desert we split a piece of their carrot cake, which was warm, light & the sauce complimented it well - was the best part of the meal. All in all I had a good time with my family, but the food, sadly, was very underwhelming, especially for the price. read more

I had the ribs with some godawful sour tasting sauce. It tasted sour and ruined the ribs. The Mac and cheese was okay at first but the deeper I got in the dish the dish was flat and bland. The fries were the highlight of the meal. My wife had pork tenderloin. It was cold uncooked and the glaze was too sweet. The mashed potatoes were cold. Probably leftovers. The deserts were so-so. Had better form H-E-B. Never returning to this poor facsimile of a restaurant. It's a fast food chain described as a restaurant. Not recommending it to anyone. The kitchen and management should be embarrassed. One is one star too many. We used to go to the one in Alamo Heights and were very pleased to see that another had opened closer to us. We've been back four times and have enjoyed the huge, cold salads, both burgers and more. The staff is always polite and attentive. The single (large) burger is one of the two best in San Antonio and perfectly grilled with a result like your outdoor grill. The location isn't really kid-friendly unless they are a bit older as many people are having meetings during meals. The pricing is fair for what you get especially given how fresh everything is when it comes to your table. We recently tried it to go as well and the packaging was perfect and everything arrived hot or cold as it should be. This is back on our regular rotation. read more

The food was good, not exceptional, just good. The restaurant was clean and the food arrived pretty quickly. I ate at this location 2 or 3 times and the food was consistent. J Alexander is one of my favorites but it was always a bit too far to drive to the quarry. Then they introduced Redlands Grill near the rim. Apparently they renamed it around September and changed it to J Alexanders. The menu is largely the same between the two restaraunt brands. My wife and I arrived on a Saturday night and the wait was about 20-30 minutes. We sat at the bar and enjoyed some fairly pricy martinis ($15 each). However they serve it with any leftover alcohol in an iced glass holder. So its a large martini and for the price i would say reasonable. The bartenders were good, friendly and attentive. For dinner I had the 16 oz prime rib, rare, and it was very good!! Highly recommend the prime rib - a 12oz is $39 and a 16oz was $42. I went with the 16oz. My wife had the salmon and got broccoli and roasted cauliflower - a nice keto meal! She enjoyed her salmon but felt it was a bit over cooked and it was a pretty small serving of salmon.
