    West coast Seafood Jambalaya

Tucked away in the remote harbour of Genoa Bay far from downtown Duncan and reached by a scenic winding road through forest and farmland, this café is a favourite go to every summer. Their outdoor deck over looks the marina and is well protected by a large sail awning. Good food served up by friendly staff puts a satisfied smile on customer's faces. On this visit my friend had her old favourite, fish and chips and I went for something more out of the ordinary, the Westcoast Seafood Jambalaya and I was not disappointed! Spicy tomato rice with onion and bell pepper, chunks of sockeye salmon, chorizo sausage and large prawns topped with four fresh steamed mussels. Amazingly, we also shared a dessert, their delicious carrot cake. Rain or shine, this is a wonderful place to take your visitors for the real flavour of the island. And don't forget to stop in at the Gallery gift shop down on the dock.

We were looking for some regional cuisine and got this rec from the front desk of our hotel on Cowichan Bay. Luckily we were famished after our Raptor encounter because we made little piggies of ourselves. We decided we wanted to "sample" things and went the appetizer route. Here's our lunch for 2: 1 Lb Salt Spring Island Mussels - 22 - white wine, fennel seed, parsley, basil, butter: super fresh, good sized mussels. Don't be fooled, 1 lb is a LOT for an appetizer. Genoa Bay's Famous Calamari - 17 - humboldt squid, ginger, lightly battered then deep fried, lemon aioli: whatever the secret seasoning is, YUM! West Coast Seafood Chowder ~ 13 bowl - cream, halibut, sockeye salmon, clams, bacon, vegetables, toasted sourdough: a good hearty chowdah! House Made Charcuterie - 26 - bacon jam, local sausage, daily selection of cheese, seasonal fruit, cranberry tomato chutney, grilled naan - a nice board, cheeses were mellow, could have used a more diverse assortment of cheese. Heirloom Carrot Cake - 9 - cream cheese frosting, maple drizzle, toasted coconut: we HAD to. Our server...Deeann, if I remember correctly, said it was a must. We stuffed ourselves silly and needed to take it to go.

A little out of the way but worth the drive. Very nice atmosphere inside and quite busy when we got there at 6:30 in the evening. The mussels we had were from Salt Spring and they were huge and cooked to perfection. For our entrees we had the seafood risotto and lamb. Just before they arrived there was a power outage and they didn't bat an eyelid. Just put out the candles which created an even better ambience and carried on serving. Our food came up and we are in the candle light and just as we were finishing up the power came back. Great food and enjoyable evening.

An amazing hidden gem of a location, off the beaten path at Genoa Bay (just east of Duncan). One of the best burgers I've ever had! Worth substituting the regular fries with the truffle parmesan fries. Strawberry lemonade was delicious as well. "Outside table worthy" in good weather. They take reservations, so you can call ahead. I hope to return soon.

We recently joined some friends and made the trip from Duncan to Genoa Bay looking for lunch. The Genoa Bay Cafe, situated right on the cove, filled the bill. Although the outdoor temperature was a tad on the cool side, we decided to sit on the fabulous deck overlooking the marina. Ann, our thoughtful server, brought us blankets to ward off the chill. The ladies ordered tea while the men ordered pints from the Riot Brewing Co. of Chemainus. We were pleasantly surprised with the menu that is above and beyond what we might have expected. Items like Brandied Garlic Escargot although attention getting did not get ordered as we settled for the Humboldt Squid, Seafood Chowder and Fish and Chips. The cream based chowder with local halibut & sockeye salmon, clams, and big chunks of bacon was a winner. My deep fried squid came in a novel presentation but I thought the squid could have been crispier. Nonetheless, it was satisfying with the diced ginger marinade in ginger-ale and lemon aioli. We will definitely return and after looking at the dinner menu have decided to make the trip later in the summer when the days are longer.

Great food, nice ambiance, but a little slow on the service due to a lack of servers. Other than that it is a top level restaurant.

Truthfully, I go for their crepes, but my friends are always bey happy with their other menu choices too. The staff is friendly and we never feel rush to eat & leave. This isn't a place you need to really dress up to feel you fit in. However, you also could if the mood suits you & still not feel out of place. Truly, I am happy that they even have tables on the main level that accommodate those with mobility aids. However, that being said, I am struggling to recall if there would be a easy enough way for a wheelchair or even a walker to make it to the main door. I'll have to remember to focus on that long enough before my next crepe eating bliss hits. As Cowichan Bay is a popular area to stop for meals, do plan to go in advance for parking. As even if there are a few spots for the restaurant, there isn't enough space to accommodate the full restaurant. If you are able to find a spot at the restaurant or are double parking at the restaurant (which is apparently allowed), it is good to let the server know what vehicle is yours. Beyond more than mention "I've parked my vehicle here", so a server can notify you if people need to be let out of the space if they're leaving before you're done. If you don''re not lucky enough to grab a parking spot right at the restaurant, you might have to go far up the road (sometimes almost to the hotel) or down the road (towards the parking area by the pubic washrooms) to reach any parking options. Definitely try it out if you are looking fit an option in Cowichan Bay. I know I'm looking forward to many more future happy crepe eating moments here with friends.

There's a parking lot on the lower part of hill, if you're not lucky to snag the few spots up front. I went here on a night that I just didn't feel like cooking supper & to enjoy the bay views before it got too dark. There was some larger groups eating/celebrating plus a smattering of smaller tables. I didn't notice more than one waitress & occasionally what I think was a manager on the floor serving. I wasn't in a huge rush to order but I do think the was some very long waiting periods to get a menu, get my a non-alcoholic drink and even much longer to be noticed I just wanted to get the bill to leave. I did appreciate that it was delivered warm. It wasn't a slammed place, but I do also understand when a waitress is running on fumes. So perhaps the bartender & manager could step in when when gaps need to be filled (as I noticed there was more tables awkwardly waiting to pay than me). Food was decent helping but nothing I would say was at a wow factor. I only had one meal here but my friends that have stopped here several times had good remarks about their meals. So maybe another stop by when I'm in the area is worth a second shot & enjoy a view to the water.

Driving along one of the country roads in North Cowichan you will find many local vineyards. Saison is in fact a vineyard but they don't specialize in wine tasting. It appears they do grow grapes but sell them to other producers on the island or perhaps they create their own family wine. What they do specialize in is a wonderful bakery. Upon entering the gate you are faced with a beautiful vineyard to the right and a lovely country home with meticulously landscaped grounds to the left. Continue up the driveway to the parking area above a little cottage. Walk down the 10 steps to the patio that overlooks a beautiful field of gardens and Mt. Prevost sticking out in the distance. In the summer there are little tables set out all over the patio along with a small stand filled with fresh produce grown in the gardens you see below. All the produce is picked daily during the season and for sale to the public. The place is filled with lots of locals and on bikers. So many bikers will make this a stop on their bike tour of the island. They come here to enjoy the many delicious baked goods: breads, rolls, pastries, pizza, etc. They also can enjoy coffee, tea and soups. During the summer if you can get your hands on some of their gazpacho you will become a fan! I want their recipe for this amazing nectar of the tomato gods. I would love to see Saison have an evening on the patio. They could hire a musician, pour wine and serve some of their lovely bread with local charcuterie and cheese. Maybe one day but for now you can enjoy all they have to offer on Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 4. Saison has a great formula and is certainly a destination spot if you come to Vancouver Island for any reason.
