We were looking for a quick lunch while in Duncan (myself, husband and 6 year old). From the google reviews it seemed Just Jakes was a bit more of a fancier restaurant so we went to the Brew Pub next door. We were told they aren't licensed for kids but Just Jakes is owned by the same people and has the same menu/kitchen. Just Jakes, the servers were lovely. Free soda refills without asking. Food was good and reasonably priced. Kids menu was cheap and cheerful. It wasn't fancy or pretentious at all. Ended up being a good stop. It was busy and the food did take a little while to come out, but we enjoyed it. read more

The food was amazing! The Jake's burger I had was a perfect ratio of sauce, bun, meat and toppings. The service from the staff was amazing. Pretty quiet, cozy, and clean as well! I wish they had more parking since we had to walk a little ways, and the wait time for the food was about forty five minutes. So, while traveling with in-laws in their serious senior years, you do what they want to do. and stopping in Duncan was their choice not mine. I am too old to really act like a petulant teen-ager while wishing we had picked a different place, so I just caved in and followed them into the first place they found. OMG. The decor suited their grandma and grandpa sensibilities. Kinda like the Howard Johnson's era decor. Safe, boring, bland. I so hoped it would not be a foreshadowing of the food. But here, in Duncan, looks can be deceiving. The Pizza, salad, and club sandwich and awesome yam fries were very good. I would recommend, if you are on the road. Found this place by searching for restaurants near me on my trip- turned out to be a great little surprise. Right in Duncan 2 blocks from city hall. We ordered the ribs and the chicken lafleur- and what a fabulous dinner they turned out to be. My chicken was moist with lots of flavor- the ribs were cooked just about perfect. Not a fancy place- but not super casual per se either. Friendly and prompt staff that took good care of us. You might need to park a block or two away but it's worth it. read more

Pretty good food, love the art, but not enough vegetarian options. I tried all of them and got bored.

Had dinner with my wife and 18 year old son. FOOD: 3 stars. - I had the special loin steak. It was rather dry, but ok. The mashed potatoes and the vegetables were quite good. Vegetables were fresh--zucchini and yellow squash. - Wife had jambalaya. Wouldn't have it again and don't recommend it. Have had better in pubs. - Son had spicy blue cheese ribeye. He likes spicy food, but wished he had ordered a plain steak. - Wine. Wife had a local Merlot. I had a Argentinian malbec. Both were fine and reasonably priced. - Dessert. (1) brownie made of white and dark chocolate, with chocolate ice cream. If you like sweet--you'll like this. Was a bit too intense for us. (2) blackberry tort. Huge, but quite good. - Coffee. These guys have done a great job making their food and beer available while we all learn how to function in the new world of social distancing. Phone in, place your order and when you'd like to pick it up. They are serving customers at the brew pub outdoor patio railing and have provided a covered area with lots of space for distancing. Couldn't get into the pub as we had the kidlets with us - so we were directed next door to Just Jakes - which is a restaurant, but they serve all the Craig St. beer. The beer was very good. Unfortunately - they did not offer smaller, 500 ml growler fills, only the 1.7 litre growlers (the hostess made some blah blah blah song and dance about the beer sales not being their main focus - whatever - I only made the suggestion based on the fact that I have this thing called a healthy disposable income and would have carted off some of the brews (in 500 ml fills) to enjoy and share with my craft-loving friends back home if they had them for sale. I also know full well that I am not the only craft loving person who does this sort of thing. If they don't want our money, their choice...) Anyways - this is a pet peeve of mine - to all Craft Beer establishments everywhere - take a nod from Brassneck and Storm brewing in Vancouver - multiple growler sizes. It works. Really. Other than the rest of the service being a tad slow - it decent. Waitress was nice. Kids menu was good. Child's chicken nuggety things off the kids menu were tender and tasty with a nice breading which was neither heavy nor greasy. Probably the best little chicken nuggety things I have ever had. The calamari was also superb! Not greasy or heavy. Nice crunch and even some deep fried hot pepper slices in their. Very yummy! The ribs were okay. I prefer a tender, slow cooked riblet, but still - these were meaty and flavourful. All in all, we had a good meal. We would be back (if in the area) again). Visiting in town on tour as we were playing a festival in Duncan and stopped here. Realllly yummy and nice atmosphere. Their beers and wines are homemade and both amazingly great. Everything we tried food wise was excellent too. The only complaint is that it took a bit long for the food to arrive so if you're hungry order an app upon arriving! In the same vein it took a really long time for them to take care of our ticket at the end when we wanted to leave. Besides those two things, everything else was great. read more

This is a great place to go to watch a sports game; there are plentiful TVs and plentiful drink choices. For dinner I ordered the crispy chicken burger, which was crispy indeed yet still moist. The portion was quite large and I was able to order it with a side of caesar salad. Had lunch here while visiting Duncan. Good flavourful food: very tasty Caesar salad, not overdressed; tasty deep fried crab cakes with mango salsa, just a bit greasy, but not too much and good rueben sandwich. Good selection of local beers, they have beer flights so it's nice to try them all. Overall happy with food, just veeeerrryyyy sloooow service. Had to wait for first drink order for a while and had to ask another server to see if our beer is impatiently waiting at the bar to be delivered to us, thirsty travellers. Had to waif for a main course for a while as well, but finally got it and enjoyed the food. Still recommend it ) read more

A lovely surprise! My friend & I were wandering around Duncan, looking for a lunch-spot. Several restaurants were closed on Mondays. We asked two ladies we saw on the street. They directed us to Jake's. I enjoyed my chicken enchiladas, & my friend liked her pot pie as well. We shared a Greek salad, which was okay, but not fantastic because it went overboard on green (why?) peppers and cukes, but fell short on tomatoes, feta & olives. All in all, a decent meal. Enjoyed a really good dinner at Just Jake's, located in the heart of Old Town, Duncan...they have a pub side & a restaurant side...chose restaurant this time, with a window table...dinner was delicious! Had their chicken off their fresh sheet...fresh veggies, cous cous on the side, french cut chicken...pleasing ambiance, kind of an old brick/loft look, could have been in Yaletown in Vancouver...music at the right level to encourage conversation...steady clientele. No wonder...good service, good food, good atmosphere...will definitely be back, and definitely putting this on my Li's List of places to dine, on Vancouver Island. Baked in the oven" and finished with tomato and lettuce..when it arrived the entire thing was refrig temp..had never been heated..nobody seemed to care in the kitchen or waitress. Have had a couple of good meals here and am impressed! Service was good both time , a little slow, but it was a packed house both times. Food was excellent and you get plenty to eat. Had the deluxe cheeseburger one day and the prime rib beef dip the next and both were excellent. We will be back and we will tell our friends. read more

I was in the area visiting family and happened upon Jakes for dinner. It was Friday night and quite busy but it was an excellent experience. I had the baked roast beef on pretzel roll special - excellent! I thought my cousin was going to lick her plate, she ordered the coconut chicken curry special and her plate was clean by the end. But what topped the night off were the desserts. I had something with a layer of maple walnut cake, caramel, chocolate ganache and white chocolate was also in there somewhere - fabulous!!! Sex in a pan was not only very pretty but also very tasty as was the white chocolate cheesecake with mashed raspberry. Everyone enjoyed their meals and agreed we would do again. read more

Tons to pick and choose from when it comes to beers and wines! They have a great team of servers and bartenders. Very welcoming atmosphere and of coarse everything gets better when you have a few drinks in you. He menu portions are small for the price. Here for the first time on the recommendation of locals. I was impressed by the Mexican burger special. They used sour cream instead of mayo on the bun! I went for Dinner Saturday night and thought the food was very good. Had the Special Coconut Curry Chicken which had wonderful flavours and priced at $20 was a great deal. The beer was great, as was the service - quick and efficient. They own the brew pub next door; but offer a different (less pub style, more high end) menu. I purposely chose the restaurant side, as the pub was quite busy. Which is always a good sign. I also went to Jakes on the Lake; just for a beer and appy.
