Fried Brussels Sprouts - Fried to perfection. Brussels sprouts are ubiquitous these days, known for their hearty health benefits and delicious taste, but this restaurant truly did them right. They were perfectly fried with a crunchy exterior, all heightened by a lovely drizzle of honey. 5/5 Fried Chicken Sandwich - This sandwich was a monstrosity! If I were Sasquatch, I'd still be full after eating this. They practically put two fillets into one sandwich. The breading was flavorful, and the chicken was incredibly juicy and tender. I definitely appreciated the generous portion size. 4/5 Ahi Tuna - Deliciously fresh and simple. The tuna was lightly seared and served sashimi-style with a perfect rare interior. Being so close to the ocean makes you appreciate how fresh seafood can taste, and they deliver that here. It's lightly dressed with soy sauce and citrus to bring out the natural flavor of the fish. 5/5 Service & Atmosphere - The service was great, and we were seated quickly. Our waiter knew the daily specials by heart; he was quick yet succinct in explaining what the restaurant specializes in. I really enjoyed this place! read more

Not good for big parties. We had 6 adults and 1 child and had to sit in separate booths, but at least the booths were next to each other. We were also warned that the kitchen gets "overwhelmed" with big groups, which we appreciated their honesty. Our table decided to order a variety of items and to share. My mom would've loved the schnitzel but when I asked if they could put the spaetzle and sauce on the side, the waiter told me "no, the chef won't do that because it would be visually unappealing." We ordered it anyway and it tasted good but my mom couldn't try it. I think it would've been fine if the spaetzel and sauce were on the side (would've been my preference too) so it would also keep the schnitzel crunchy. But anyway, we also ordered the seared tuna, which was too garlicky for our liking, the shrimp boil, which was very good, and the fried chicken, which was just ok. My sister sitting in the next booth also ordered the brussel sprouts and that was easily the star of the show! This restaurant allows kids but I'm not sure if I would really consider it to be "kid friendly" since they did not offer a kids menu. All-in-all, food was good, service was honest, and we would probably come back. read more

Maybe the dish we tried were some appetites but my son and I weren't impressed. We had the schnitzel which might have been good but the sauce spoiled it. read more

Loved everything about this place. It was laid back, the food was delicious, the bar tender was witty and super kind. This was actually one of the only places my friend and I ate out at while on vacation. I'd say we picked the right spot. My friend ordered the schnitzel and the bite I had I can say it was delicious. She enjoyed it as well. I ordered the bangers and mash. Absolutely a winner. It was the perfect amount of food and so flavorful. read more

Spruce is a busy small restaurant specializing in craft cocktails and foods that pair well together. Open most evenings. The bartenders are true mixologist and even have non/ alcoholic cocktails and 25 specialty bitters (dry jan anyone?) I enjoy all their appetizers every thing from, seared ahi tuna, bacon wrapped dates (you get 4 per order), crispy brussel sprouts are crack, they are so good. (balsamic vinegar goodness) Menu is somewhat small but they have a great Chicken sandwich that is perfection in crunch, best batter Ive had (since Oak in Seattle. I think it originally was the sister to Spruce but changed owners.?) The other star dish is pork schnitzel, tasty all around and I love the capers, the red cabbage side, it's not too big, so you can finish the meal. (which is perfect as I don't think it would carry well to reheat due to gravy) I can't forget to compliment the service. Our waiter checked on us often, gave suggestions when we asked, water always was refilled which we appreciated so much. Service is lost nowadays but not here! So come here for a small plate and specialty cocktails or craft beer night or a full meal. The only underwhelming item was the side of fries that come with the sandwich was meh, but they do have decorated ones you can order as side that might be more tasty. read more

We decided on Spruce for dinner after walking around the farmers market and downtown Port A during the morning and window shopping all the menus around town. When we made it in at 6PM, it was already pretty full. The waiter explained to us that Spruce is a chef-led restaurant with offerings that constantly change to incorporate in season fruits and vegetables. That sounded good to us! Shermy's Fried Chicken & A Biscuit ($19) - Starting with the chicken: this dish comes with two thighs, deboned and pounded relatively flat, then dredged in flour and fried. The dredge is applied in a thick layer, resulting in areas that have a thicker, more moist and floury bite. Most of it is fried until nicely crisp. The seasoning seems to be only salt and pepper, making the chicken a canvas to add flavor to from other sources. The chicken itself is on the verge of being dry, approaching being stringy and tough, with most of the juices evaporated. Good fried chicken is great even by itself. This fried chicken, on the other hand, is bland enough to require the agave butter and bbq sauce it's served with. The bbq sauce is pretty generic sweet, tangy, and salty. The agave butter is nicely sweet and creamy. Not much else to say about those two. On the side is the smallest biscuit I've ever seen. It's almost vestigial. I'm talking a tiny puck, less than 2 inches in diameter, cut in half, then with the inner halves grilled, adding char. The biscuit is dry, floury, dense enough that it's hard to cut through with the supplied butter knife, and tastes mainly of alkalinity. When people say they don't like biscuits, it's because this biscuit type is all they've ever eaten. I'm kind of grateful that the biscuit is small - any larger would be hard to choke down. The dish also comes with a vinegar slaw and two cornichons. The cornichons are supremely crisp and not too acidic. The vinegar slaw is exceptionally acidic and sour, way too strong for my tastes. It has almost a bit of the stink and the liquid the slaw rests in is a cloudy white color. Fermented perhaps? In any case, neither my wife nor I could stomach more than a bite of the slaw. (3/5) Schnitzelet ($19) - This includes three smaller pieces of schnitzel covered with spaetzel and red cabbage. The schinitzelets are around 3 inch lengthwide ovals, lightly fried in a thin breading. Not much crisp, but the pork that's pounded flat has plenty of flavor and moisture. The spaetzel seems to be deep fried, giving them a crunchy skin throughout with a toothsome center, unlike pan fried spaetzel. When I think of spaetzel, it's usually boiled and then drowned in butter, making it dense and heavy, yet somehow with deep frying the spaetzel feel paradoxically healthier and lighter. It's in a very creamy sauce studded with extra large, high quality capers. The red cabbage is clearly vinegared, but it's quite mild tanginess and acidity. Very pleasing to eat. Great dish overall. (5/5) The portions Spruce serves are very reasonable - on the smaller side compared to most restaurants, but more than enough to fill both of our stomachs with us feeling sick afterwards, or having any leftovers. This should be on your itinerary. Make space for it! Fantastic cocktails, divine fried chicken, melt-in-your mouth Brussel sprouts and all delivered with warmth and delight from a great team. The chicken, specifically, is amazing and I've had Thomas Keller's. read more

We had a wonderful experience at Spruce. We went to the restaurant at around 5:30 on a Sunday after a long day of hiking, and had no issue getting a seat. The restaurant has a moody, cabin-like feel and is very cozy. The owner came out to greet / serve us and was super friendly. As we weren't from Washington, he took the time to give us recommendations for around the area. We ordered the brussel sprouts, dates with bacon, and fried chicken. Everything was very tasty. Cocktails were also delicious. Would definitely recommend! read more

I will dream about the Brussels sprouts. Friendly staff. I would have given a 5, but we went on a busy night (Father's day and Summer Solstice) and they needed to halt all new service for 15 minutes to let the 1-man kitchen catch up. read more

We chose to eat dinner here after reading some glowing reviews. My husband ordered the fried chicken and a biscuit, because the biscuit and side of pickles it came with sounded appealing. When it arrived, the biscuit was hilariously the size of a half dollar - truly the smallest, thinnest biscuit I've ever seen, and the pickles were missing. The chicken needed salt but it was good. I had the schnitzelette, which did live up to its name - three petite pieces of schnitzel topped with a thick lemony cream sauce, capers, some sprinkling of fried spatzle, and pickled red cabbage. I would've preferred the sauce on the side. It was heavy and drowned out the rest of the dish. The biggest downside of the evening was the service. Our bartender/server asked if we wanted more beer more than once and the way she did it felt pushy and borderline demeaning. Despite smiling, her tone was curt and left us both feeling uncomfortable like we were an inconvenience rather than guests. All in all, the food was okay, but nothing worth returning for, and the service made us feel unwelcome. With so many great spots in the area, I wouldn't recommend this one. read more

Had a super meal and great service. Well made and an emphasis on local. My wife's Berkeley bowl and my cutlets and spaetzel were both great

As we enjoyed our drinks we watched into the kitchen (open to the seating area) and were amazed by the ONE chef cooking all the food by herself! Spruce is my favorite place to eat when I'm in Port Angeles. The food is next-level yet straightforward: Crispy Brussels sprouts with balsamic and maple syrup, bacon-wrapped dates, and smoked yogurt with pistachios and beets (trust me, it works). We came here on a Wednesday evening at 6:30pm and were seated immediately for a party of three. Spruce is located in downtown Port Angeles near the city pier and the ferry lines. There is street parking and free parking lots in the area. CRISPY BRUSSELS SPROUTS ($10) - These were pretty well roasted and slightly bitter. It was sweet and vinegary from the maple balsamic glaze on top. I really liked this dish and the portions were pretty big too. 4.5/5 QUINOA & HUMMUS FRITTERS ($12) - These were just okay and the inside didn't taste like much. These came with garlic aioli and green hot sauce; the garlic aioli didn't taste like anything and we liked the green hot sauce way more. In fact, it went well with everything else like the fries. 3/5 FRIED CHICKEN PLATE ($20) - The chicken was crispy, flavorful, and juicy on the inside. The biscuit was a little dry but the balsamic greens were crunchy and cut through the fried chicken. 4/5 STEAK FRITES ($26) - I asked for the steak cooked medium rare and it was spot on! I wasn't a fan of the gorgonzola butter on top so I didn't use it, and the steak was flavorful enough on its own anyway. The fries were not very well seasoned but went well with the green hot sauce. 4/5 TOUCH OF EVIL MANHATTAN ($14) - This drink was dry and spirit forward. Interestingly, it was on an ice cube which is different from typical manhattans which are served up. I could smell and taste some of the smoke that was added to the drink. 4.5/5 Overall the food was pretty good. This hit the spot after a long day of hiking and it was a good amount of food for the three of us. read more

Had a nice dinner here last night after a full day in Olympic. This came recommended by our hotel as a "local favorite" and I'm so glad I checked it out. On a Thursday around 6:30, we had to wait just a few minutes for a boot. There are a few vegetarian items such as salads, an impossible burger and then what I ordered-the Berkeley Bus Tofu sandwich. It came grilled on a roll with pesto, red peppers, avocado and greens. Side choices are fries or mixed greens. I opted for the greens with a sesame miso vinaigrette. Food was excellent and service was warm. It's a bar as well with lodge type "outdoorsy" type decor. Gives it a rustic, homey feel. Located downtown, a block from the water, there is plenty of street parking. Great dining option for dinner if you're staying in town. read more

The starters are excellent, like the bacon wrapped figs and the crispy brussels sprouts. But was surprised that they don't like doing takeout orders, something about "carbon footprint." Walked in with $300 cash is my hand ready to place an order. They made a concession for me but told me that they wouldn't be able to accommodate me in the future because they only had one cook and they said the carbon footprint was too great. Which is sad because I would probably get takeout once every week or two, but now we just avoid it. read more

Spruce is fantastic! Great food, cool and welcoming atmosphere and informative staff. All the booths were filled and we sat at the bar. The bartender was kind, informative and has a really great memory! We got the Brussels, shrimp cocktail, beet salad, pound of shrimp and steak frites! I'd recommend it all. We didn't try to friend chicken or chicken sandwich but it's obviously a crowd favorite. I'll be back! read more

This place has a very small menu - make sure to check online before you come in! I was planning on bringing my friend for her bday dinner here, but once we sat down, I realized they didn't have any of the menu items either of us had decided we were going to order. Luckily, the server was not offended when I apologized and told her we would return another time when it wasn't a birthday celebration. Mediocre bar food with the slightly elevating distinction of offering vegan/vegetarian food for the discerning customer. Location fronting the ferry docks downtown is ideal, with parking lots across the pedestrian friendly street. I ate a "tempeh" barbeque-sauce slathered burger with fries, which was classic bar food and didn't disappoint -- but really no finesse and the use of the stock barbeque sauce to give it flavor left nothing else of note. The "goat cheese and beet salad" I wanted as a side was delivered with brown wilted lettuce obvious at first glance to both the server and myself. I expected her to not set it down in front of me shamelessly. She did set it down and expect me to consume bad food. I asked her to please take it back to the chef and request a different bed of greens. Once corrected it tasted fine. The server should not have served this to me and it showed a sloppy kitchen. A wholly unremarkable $40 dropped on forgettable fare. The drinks on the other hand seemed a lot more eclectic and fun. I was out of moolah for drinks. read more

We went on a Saturday evening is shoulder season at 6:30 pm. We were quickly seated. Comfortable and nice staff. Service was fast. Interesting cocktail and beer menu. Cocktail was not as good as expected and neither was the local IPA. Brussels sprouts were good. Beat salad with goat cheese was ok. Beats were harder than expected and served cold. There was no outstanding choice on the mains menu. Many choices but no local salmon, crab, or lamb. This place has potential but has not achieved it yet. Hopefully it will in the future. read more
