What a joy to have this Market Vineyard in our area. Delicious baked goods. When we have family or friends over we can indulge them.

The Cowichan Valley has so many little food finds that make it special. Saison is at the top of the list. Driving along one of the country roads in North Cowichan you will find many local vineyards. Saison is in fact a vineyard but they don't specialize in wine tasting. It appears they do grow grapes but sell them to other producers on the island or perhaps they create their own family wine. What they do specialize in is a wonderful bakery. Upon entering the gate you are faced with a beautiful vineyard to the right and a lovely country home with meticulously landscaped grounds to the left. Continue up the driveway to the parking area above a little cottage. Walk down the 10 steps to the patio that overlooks a beautiful field of gardens and Mt. Prevost sticking out in the distance. In the summer there are little tables set out all over the patio along with a small stand filled with fresh produce grown in the gardens you see below. All the produce is picked daily during the season and for sale to the public. The place is filled with lots of locals and on bikers. So many bikers will make this a stop on their bike tour of the island. They come here to enjoy the many delicious baked goods: breads, rolls, pastries, pizza, etc. They also can enjoy coffee, tea and soups. During the summer if you can get your hands on some of their gazpacho you will become a fan! I want their recipe for this amazing nectar of the tomato gods. I would love to see Saison have an evening on the patio. They could hire a musician, pour wine and serve some of their lovely bread with local charcuterie and cheese. Maybe one day but for now you can enjoy all they have to offer on Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 4. Saison has a great formula and is certainly a destination spot if you come to Vancouver Island for any reason. read more

I am torn on this review. I want to keep this place All to my self and share with locals only and that is because I want this place to be accessible as I need it to be.... just for me. I've said it and I mean it....so if you are curious, don't go here if you love deliciousness in the form of baked goods. If you don't like fresh, don't bother. If you don't enjoy a tranquil view and fresh air...don't go. If you avoid small talk with other locals that may be contagious with joy and good taste GONG... don't. In fact, tim hortons is close by and if your in a hurry, you will Love tim bits. This place has no doughnuts and often worth waiting for. Oh, no drive thru and your car might get dusty from the gravel drive. Thank you and sorry. Ok, seriously this place is awesome. Don't go. read more

Fantastic bakery and cafe. We tried tarte flambé focaccia, pesto, goat cheese, and zucchini focaccia, pasta puttanesca, and duck with blueberry sauce. For $16.99, we were given a 1/2 duck in a flavourful blueberry sauce with a side of sautéed green beans and fingerling potatoes. Our only criticism of the entire meal was that the duck could have been roasted longer as the fat under the skin had not been rendered enough to provide a crispier skin and more tender meat; however, was still very good. Beautiful desserts were priced very reasonably for the quality. Highly, highly recommend. Unfortunately only open on the weekends until late afternoon. read more

Delicious, one of my favourite places to bring out-of-town guests. Fresh, reliably a treat. I enjoy their pastries as well as their egg dishes. (Worth noting not much in the way of gluten-free options), Beautifully situated amidst their farm. Sometimes plant starts or flowers available as well. read more

Simply amazing! The food is to die for and the scenery is quite nice.

Saison, your tartes have charmed my heart. First - the SAVOURY. Tarte flambe (onion, gruyere, bacon, sour cream) on a round of tender bread baked that very morning by the unparalleled artisan baker at the helm of this ship of senses - Ingrid the Bold. (I've only spoken with this woman once, but - knowing the hours she works on their busy weekends-only openings and imagining the intensity of their weekday farming routine, I feel the title is justified). Then - the SWEET. Chocolate and hazelnut tartlette (ideal for two, or a very serious chocolate-dedicated one!) and a hot cup of fresh coffee. No espresso here, which is surprising, but perhaps that is a simple factor of running Saison lean on staff and big on owner-inspired (or is that inspired owner?) passion for great food in an unforgettable setting. Which brings us to the last point - and maybe the most resonant of all: the SCENE. Sublime is the word for this place - with views to Saltspring Island from the top of the hill and the simply superior sun-lover's deck facing Mt. Prevost from the bakery. It's basking-room-only, folks, so get there early and keep a sharp eye for free tables en plein air. Oh, and if you find the cutlery difficult to wield with vigour, console yourself with the knowledge that all napkins, forks, knives, cups and stir sticks are 100% compostable! How's that for local flavour? read more
