You get home from a long day at work and realize that you didn't go grocery shopping and there is going to be a line around the store in Trader Joe's. You realize you can order online (and get a discount if you pay in cash) and can either have your rolls delivered to you on your couch or pick up. The sushi arrives in a colorful shopping bag of sorts, neatly packed and arranged. Open the bag like a present, choppsticks and all and begin your feast. My favorite's here are the simple roll 2 or 3 roll specials, they come with Miso soup and salad (and free brown rice or multigrain rice options). The fish is always fresh and their menu is like sushi for dummies because it's all based on colorful pictures that show you exactly what you are having; and surprisingly it doesn't look like the cheap restaurant menus with pictures! I went here with my best friend on a random night. We were craving sushi and we heard about this place through Boston.com, cheap places to eat so we decided to visit. Genki Ya is very small. There were tables for us when we walked in, I believe this was a Wednesday night. This is probably the first sushi restrauant (that we've been to) that has full blown pictures of the sushi they offered which was good.. the pictures do not lie. It tastes amazing.. This is my favorite sushi restaurant, both for dine-in and delivery. The Fresh Summer Rolls (on the appetizer menu) are phenomenal and very refreshing. I'm also a big fan of their Tuna Tataki, which is generously portioned (plenty for two). The green tea is also unusually good. I've never had a bad experience in person or via Foodler. I am not going to give it 5 stars just because I need to be blown away for me to do that but I am definitely a fan! The best part about this place is that they deliver and you can have the option to substitute the rice with brown rice if you want to be healthier. The place itself is small so delivery is always a great option, however you sometimes have to wait up to an hour if they're super busy, which I am totally fine with as long as they keep delivering their sushi to me. The last time I sat there I ordered the volcano roll and I was pleasantly surprised, they cooked the scallops really well, which is one of my biggest pet peeves. I have been a regular delivery customer for two years now, and they have never disappointed me! the sushi is always fresh and delicious. they have an AMAZING deal where you can get 2 rolls, miso soup, and a salad for $11 cash, or 3 rolls, miso soup, and a salad for $14 cash. I order with a friend and we get six rolls total plus soup and salad for each of us for like $35 total, which I think is a great deal. Sushi is NEVER that cheap! good sushi is usually around $7 per roll! Definitely order from here! you will not be disappointed! Only one side note - If it is a busy night at a peak time, especially when there is bad weather and people don't want to go out for food, delivery can take a while. One of my favorite sushi places in Coolidge Corner! Came here on a Tuesday night to a surprisingly small but lively restaurant with a cool crowd inside and no wait for a table for 2. The menu is like a picture book with an entire page of appetizers, another for healthy options, and no fish sushi. They have a lot of cool special rolls that include sweet potato and banana! We ordered five rolls, an appetizer and drinks and took leftovers home. They were very accommodating when we asked to replace shellfish for another fish. I guess I'll add another to the very many positive review of Genki Ya. Sushi was very well received. I've ordered both online and in person, as always, in person sushi is supremely better. My one concern with the place is what plagues all restaurants in Boston, too many tables for the space, you end up being cramped next to other people and end up playing a game of chicken with your elbows. The turnover is pretty quick so I can't understand why they don't drop two tables and create a much better atmosphere. Their warm sake is also very good, however they overheat it to the point that you end up waiting until halfway through your meal to enjoy it. Sometimes less is more! read more

The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. The service is wonderful and the food has never been anything short of delicious. A bit pricey, but I think it's totally worth it! I really like Genki Ya. I have never been to the restaurant but we order delivery pretty frequently. Last time I checked it was the second-cheapest sushi place on Foodler, which is surprising because it is organic. I'm not really sure what 'organic' entails here- how can fish be organic unless it is farmed? Farmed fish is usually something that people avoid. I suppose the vegetables are organic? Either way, the sushi is always delicious and well-assembled. They have a variety of options both with fish and without, and the spring rolls are particularly good. We have never had a complaint. Plus, they have the option of making all the rolls with multi-grain rice, which is an interesting variation from the regular white rice. The service is very fast. Too fast, actually. Sometimes they come to clear the table when we are still working on the food. Or else, they hover around you, ready to sprint in to action as soon as you finish the last bite. BEST UNAGI DON I've ever had... they are not cheap like other Japanese restaurants that only give you 3 slices of eel and call it a unagi don. The sushi also comes in brown rice for everything. Definitely the best option for sushi in the Coolidge Corner area. Their food is fresh and delicious, even for delivery. Compared to other places in the area (Takusan, Fugakyu), Genki Ya seems to be on par for price, but I find their food much fresher and better tasting. They also offer brown or multigrain rice for a small fee with all of their rolls. Strongly recommend either of the roll specials which are available for lunch or dinner, both dine in and take out-- 2 for $11 or 3 for $14.50, both come with fruit, salad, and miso soup. Absolutely fantastic sushi. They serve the standard sashimi of very good quality, but where they absolutely shine is with the amazingly creative rolls they make. I've been there three times and tried a variety of dishes. From the spinach appetizer with miso dressing and bonito flakes, to the amazing combination of eel, avocado, and sweet potato in the Super Dragon roll... I really have not had anything there that is not amazing. The service is also outstanding. The host and waiters are clearly working at maximum thought process to keep the waits as short as possible, while still being exceptionally polite and helpful. This place is fantastic! I been all over the greater Boston area for sushi, and I love Genki Ya the most. They offer a great variety of maki rolls, which is like a breath of fresh air if you're used to seeing the same thing on everyone else's menu. I've been here so many times, and ordered delivery even more and every time the sushi is fresh, great prices, and large rolls. Rolls I frequently get: Alaskan Roll: King Salmon + Avacado+ Cucumber. Spicy Yellowtail. Eel Avocado. Crazy Roll. Tuna and Cucumber. One thing I've noticed however is that their spicy rolls (besides the Yellowtail) aren't the best/crunchy like most places. Stick with sushi not covered in mayo and you'll do fine! If I don't want to break the bank this is the place I go, otherwise Fugakyu up the street is my other place of choice. Overall this is a pretty decent sushi place. I've been to the Brookline location a couple of times and to the Alewife location once. Both were pretty similar experiences. The food was ok - I've never had bad food here, but at the same time it's nothing to rave about. I've been to a number of sushi places around the country that do it much much better. Don't get me wrong, all the ingredients were fresh but I guess most of the special rolls and entrees I ordered lacked in the flavor department. The same can be said about setting - it is very nice, clean, well lit. The service is prompt and attentive. But again, it doesn't really stand out, there is no authentic element here, no romantic atmosphere, nothing that would make going to this place memorable. Also, considering what I said above, the food is somewhat overpriced. I would pay the same at a nicer place somewhere in downtown Boston, but given what I said above the prices do make me cringe a little. read more
