I found Gene's Variety on a Yelp search in Milford. It had an excellent rating and I have to agree that it was spot on. It specializes in Italian, Portuguese foods and the Deli provides a great assortment of sub sandwiches. I had the Pilgrim, sea salt chips and a chocolate milk The Pilgrim had turkey, warm stuffing, cranberry sauce and mayo on a very fresh torpedo roll. I stopped in for a Porketta sandwich for lunch. Great, fresh made and warmed up sandwich was perfect. I also picked up a stuffed chicken premade dinner for 11.00 that was also nicely done. This a nice little neighborhood variety store with a nice deli counter. read more

A gem of an old fashioned Italian deli and specialty store. Great food, excellent, friendly and efficient service and a GREAT selection of foods including pasta (dried and frozen) and other Italian specialties for home cooks, homemade pies, cookies, soups and takeout dinners. Oh and you have a choice of Portuguese rolls or Italian for your sandwiches. If you go for the Portuguese (so light and airy!), you select your own roll from the front of the counter and hand it over. Don't forget the Porketta (a regional specialtyl) or other take home including focaccia style pizza and clam fritters, though I think those puppies are called clam cakes in this town... I was in town for a work meeting. I dont spend much time on the East Coast. When i am there are a few things i look for. On this trip i was looking for an amazing Italian Sub. I was not suprised by Genes Variety. The sub start ed on a fresh roll and loaded with fresh ingredients. Their provolone is some of the best i have evere had. The service was second to none. Their were 3 young men behind the sandwi g counter ready to take my order. They werr very nice and answered all of my questions and took my order. The sandwich was made in a timely manner. I was suprised that Gene still made their own pop, so i added a cane sugar Root Beer. read more

Their chicken used to have lots of chunks of chicken. Bought it at least once a week. Now it's basically a container FULL OF PASTINA little broth and. barely any tiny pieces of chicken, which I think are not sliced/cut right from a chicken but something processed. This place is great! The deli is insanely delicious. Many sandwiches to choose from, but everything I have had was excellent. They have prepared food and soups everyday. Excellent for when you just want a hot meal or don't want to cook. The staff is friendly and the service is fast. Of course you must get one of their amazing fresh made to order sandwiches -love the Di Parma! Wow! This was a great find. I moved to Blackstone Valley area and there aren't many places to get anything other than basic pub and typical American food. The grocery stores do have a good selection of Latino foods and basic items, but for anything other than that, I have to drive quite a way. The area has a lot of people of Brazilian and Portuguese and others that look vert Central American to me, so you can find that. Italian, Indian, Asian, etc... are very small unless I drive to Providence or Boston and even those are more limited that other places I lived with fairly large stores for many ethnic foods including Russian, Polish, etc... so this is an oasis in a very barren place for ethnic supplies. It just looks like a very small market not on a main commercial street and only has on street parking. And the name of the place certainly doesn't sound like a an Italian place at all. The cannolis are amazing in that they fill them to order, so the shells are still crisp when you eat them (which is a big part of the cannoli experience). They use a plain filling with no chocolate chips or citron, but it's still the real thing. When I've been to Italy that varied a lot by region so I wasn't sure what to expect. These are just like what you'd get in Italy. I tried the Italian sub and it was excellent. Mortadella, Capricola, etc... but, they also have several other subs that aren't Italian and I'm positive that they'd all be excellent. This was a great find and only 15-20 minutes away, so I'll be going back and stocking up on some of the best dried pasta you can find and other Italian grocery items, and definitely something from the Deli and some cannoli and some of the homemade cookies. This isn't a bakery or pastry shop, so don't expect that, but what they do have is top quality. I did find an Italian pastry place that is the closest to a real Italian bakery that's about a 45-50 minute drive, so I go there to get those. There are suite a few Italian pastry shops that sell a few other items, but they're pretty bad, but people just don't know what they haven't had and I've had much better. Gene's Variety is the real thing, though, and in this area that is very hard to find, so I was totally surprised and will be going back regularly. read more

I was surprised that they had prepared lasagna. They also had frozen pasta without sauce. While I was shopping I did talk to people. A Woman did inform me that she drove a long distance just to come to this place. I got the Dubliner sandwich. Corn beef/ coleslaw, i'm not quite sure what else was on it. - not one of my favorite sandwiches but this was my first time and if I go back I will try another sandwich. I got a container of their potato salad. Potato salad was good. Maybe they Could've Used some chives instead of white onions, but it was tasty. I have lived in the Milford for many years and it seems that there are two camps. You either go to Gene's or Oliva's. I have had a few long time Milford residents tell me this. While there is no way of really confirming the statement, there seems to be some truth to it based on my own experience. Many times, I find that depending on what side of town I am in, dictates my choice. I imagine that it has something to do with location. One is in the western area of town (Gene's) and one is a little past the center going east on East Main (Oliva's). The problem is, a very good one, is that both have excellent food! It's a can sometimes lead to a tough choice. When I go to Oliva's I get the B.O.G. It's delicious! Gene's has excellent fresh made subs. It can get quite busy for such a small store. This is due to both the great food, and friendly staff that attracts the hungry masses. The store has a wide selection of side dishes, drinks (including beer), Italian grocery items, and deli meats. Gene's also offers a selection of pre-made entrees, soups, fresh baked items, and dessert items to take away. Their signature item, from what I can tell, is the Italian sub. Be aware, there is Italian dressing on it. So if you don't like Italian dressing on your sub make sure you tell them. With that being said, if you are looking for an Italian sub with Italian dressing on it, skip the line. Walk towards the back of the store down the isle on the right hand side, and there is a container with fresh Italian subs ready to go for $6.49 +tax, in front of the counter on the right. The container empties quickly. For about 10 dollars you can get the sub, chips and a drink. I can guarantee you will not go hungry and you will be satisfied with your choice. There are many great small business/ family owned restaurants in Milford especially for lunch time. I can definitely recommend Gene's Variety as a choice worthy of your tastebuds and wallet! read more
