This was our first fine dining in-house experience anywhere since the pandemic began, and it was a pleasure for all three of us. We have eaten here many times starting about 35 years ago, and every occasion was delightful with just one exception when I had a seafood entree that was way past its sell-by date. But like all of our other experiences here, the food, drinks and service were exceptional last night. Our favorite server, Celeste, was not present, but Terry did a very fine job. The snapper soup, salad and swordfish were all perfect, and my wife and sister-in-law thoroughly enjoyed their brisket entree. We usually get dessert, and they are always great, but we were too full this time. The wines, particularly the Conundrum red blend, and cocktails were also excellent. Our family of four (2 adults, 2 young adult kids) went for Father's Day dinner. Wow, what a disappointment. Maybe we ordered a lot of not-great things from the menu but this was an incredibly expensive, disappointing meal. Took a long time for server to show up after we were seated. She seemed rushed, not particularly friendly or accommodating. The snapper soup came without a soup spoon, was thin, light-colored, and flavorless. Husband ate only a couple of spoonfuls and didn't finish it. Server didn't bother to ask if there was an issue or if he didn't like it. We had to request bread and it took another 10+ minutes to get them, then we regretted asking for them b/c they looked and tasted like a bland, cheap potato-roll. The butter was also light, bland, flavorless. At these prices they should be giving super creamy butter and fancy artisanal dinner bread/rolls. Not crappy yellow bread rolls like you could buy in bulk for 3.99 at the grocery store. There was a table behind us with a couple with a loud/screamy toddler. Our conversation was frequently interrupted by the kid's screams. Three of us ordered the salmon which was not only incredibly over cooked, but also strangely, one person at our table got a normal size piece, two of us had weird, skinny, small pieces of salmon. My piece was especially small, I wouldn't even serve this to my family for dinner, my piece maybe was 3oz of salmon.. maybe?? No consistency.. every entree of salmon served to one table should look the same. The rice/pea mixture that came with it was flavorless but also swimming in huge amounts of butter. One person got the crème brûlée which didn't have a consistent crust across the top and was ridiculously sweet. The plain vanilla ice cream dessert was so over-frozen that 10 minutes after coming to the table is was still hard and difficult to spoon into.. this entire experience was So incredibly disappointing, especially at this price point. We had really nice seating on the beautiful terrace. The baked goat cheese was delicious, the pork brisket sandwich, not so much. I ordered the braised ribeye sandwich and was informed they didn't have it, so I decided on the pork brisket sandwich instead. I could not detect the flavor of the bacon cherry bbq sauce at all, which sounds delicious, it was very disappointing, especially considering the price. This is a Thanksgiving Review. If you could give zero stars, I would still give 1 for our waiter and the ambiance. But let's move on to the entertainment portion of our review. We had a reservation for 5 and were 10 minutes early, but the host was very flustered, becoming more and more manic as time went on, trying to figure out where to sit us. He was power walking around tersely muttering "5!", "#5", "Must. Table." Finally a new table magically appeared in a corner 20 minutes after our reservation. 1st course was fine. Just fine. 2nd course (entree)... Bit of a disaster. All three $39 Turkey meals came out cold and curious looking. The meat was not carved turkey, but a processed, homogenous turkey slice that resembled a Hungry Man meal. The serving size of each item was paltry, filling a mere half the plate while the stuffing clearly came from a box. The two $45 crab cake meals came out with one mostly lump meat crab cake that was unfortunately burnt on the bottom. The "crispy kale" ended up being the spring green salad mix in the plastic bags at the supermarket sauteed with no seasoning. The fingerling potatoes were not seasoned and so dry that some of them could not be cut through. Finally dessert. Why not? It was included. The Pumpkin Brulée Whoopie Pie was actually an ice cold dish of some some of pumpkin slush masquerading as Crème Brulée and a tiny, store bought Whoopie Pie on the side. It was not eaten. The Pecan Tarts were definitely not homemade, saccharine sweet and almost impossible to break through with a fork. They were not eaten. The Chocolate Mousse was actually just a small piece of chocolate cake with regular frosting. That was eaten. My mother-in-law proved smarter than the rest of us and didn't order dessert at all. I got 24 hours of military leave and spent it driving hours to and from this restaurant to spend it with my family. Thank God they have senses of humor, because this was a disaster that will be talked about for YEARS! read more

My parents and I eat here at least once whenever I visit and if it is during the winter months we love the table next to the fireplace. It is a quaint little building that has been around since the 1740's. The wait staff is phenomenal and are always aware of every little thing you need, even before you realize yourself :) Everyone who works there is super friendly and courteous it is always a lovely experience. The food is outstanding and just perfect! They do a Caesar salad for two at table side which is always best to watch. I do forewarn it is a big salad and my parents and I can split it 3 ways and STILL be satisfied!! They get fresh seafood everyday, but I usually end up with their filet, but they are known for their Beef Wellington which is excellently prepared! They just renovated their bar area and it looks beautiful, especially at Christmas time with all the lights :) This Inne is also known for their weddings, rehearsal dinners and other special moments, such as an anniversary or birthday, so you can count on a wonderful staff and a beautiful location to make some wonderful memories. I personally have only celebrated my parents wedding anniversary here (just us 3, nothing major) but it was still special. And since I was born on Christmas, we celebrate my birthday a week before so coming here is a special time for that as well. General Warren Inn 12 Oct 2018 ** Very Disappointing, We went there a long time ago and thought we would have another great meal. It was not to be. Atmosphere is pleasant. The wine was nicely chilled and the glasses were very clean. Service was okay, a bit slow for sitting at the bar. Food, My wife had the lobster jambalaya. It was served with dirty rice which was not aesthetically pleasing, as it looked grey. The seasoning was okay but not nearly enough spice. The lobster was mushy and lacked seasoning. Her meal was a disappointment. I had the elk chops, which were wrong on every level. First, the presentation was okay but more along the line of a buffet line. Protein on either side of the plate and the veggies in the middle. I ordered rare, and the chops came out blue. For those not in the know, blue comes after raw and before rare. The aroma was off-putting. It smelled as if it had been in the refrigerator a couple of days too long. I continued to reach for the salt as the meat was way under seasoned. The grits were undercooked. They had almost no seasoning if any. The carrots were al-dente but were actually closer to raw than al-dente. The sauce had some flavor but was not pronounced enough to say if was to be cranberry or some other imperceptible flavor. We went out of our way to go to this tavern, to much disappointment. But that is part of the fun of trying different places, but unfortunately not yesterday. read more

I actually had my rehearsal dinner here ten years ago when I got married the first time. Sure the marriage didn't work out, but the food is still good. I will say that this more for the older crowd. If you're a young couple looking for a hip place to go out and be seen, this is totally not it. This is a place your mom and dad will go to on their anniversary (which is exactly what we did). While we like to consider ourselves young, we also have a toddler and like the peace and quiet. That and my husband took one look at the menu and saw they had beef wellington and that pretty much sealed the deal. The staff is very friendly and nice. One of the things I noticed right away. A restaurant of this caliber either has a wait staff that are really down to earth to make your experience more personable, OR, they have a really uppity staff that makes you seem like you're out of place unless you're Mrs. Howell and you have a fur stole. The food was excellent, just as I had remembered and I actually finished nearly everything on my plate and still had room for dessert. I will say that whenever my husband and I go out, we attract the loud obnoxious type. We were seated next to table of two couples, one of who was the loud "know it all" type of drunk. We went to General Warren for my boyfriend's birthday and had a wonderful experience. We were greeted by a very nice host who sat us at our table and got us water right away. Sarah was our waitress and she was great. We ordered the quail lollipops which were good. And ordered the filet mignon and pork medallions and they wore so good. We wanted To order more! We didn't know if we wanted go get dessert but after watching Sarah make Bananas Foster for another table we had to try it! Bananas Foster was delicious! Sarah did a wonderful job she was very nice! As Sarah was giving us the check she told us the General Warren wanted to take the dessert off our check because we were celebrating a birthday and it was our first time eating at the restaurant. So I went here for dinner tonight, sorta tagging along on a group dinner with the president of my organization. General Warren Inne is one of those traditional american restaurants with a lot of history behind it. Crowd is certainly older, probably most suitable for business dinners. Service was fast and friendly, considering they were serving some 25-30 of us and the food was fantastic. They made the caesar salad right next to the table and that was pretty tasty. I ended up getting the beef welington, which as a steak (medium I think) covered in a pastry with some mushrooms - delicious. The architecture and historic ambiance captivates me. How wonderfully cozy to dine next to a blazing, wood burning fireplace. I love that. I have eaten many dishes on the menu buy really enjoy the Caesar Salad and Bananas Foster. Both are made table-side. That's so awesome. (I can't stop thinking about the bananas foster.). So, this may not be the coolest, youngest, hippest, trendiest place in Philly, but you have to appreciate the rich cultural ambience and wonderful dining experience. I came here on the whim of my boss. It was a cold PA night and we were all out here for business. Three California boys (and one Chicago boy) that don't know anything about the area were clueless but we gave it a shot. Well I am certainly glad we did. It is heavily tailored to an older crowd but the service, food and historical nature of the entire building was very cool to see first hand. The service was excellent all night, and I was lucky enough to try a beef wellington here. Other than being slightly overcooked it was great as well! The best part of the night was getting a tour of the rooms of the Inn from the staff and a bit of a history lesson while we were taking the tour. It was great and I would not hesitate to come back the next time I am in PA if I was looking for a higher end restaurant. Great job to everyone there. read more

Overview: review from guy and girl--essentially a 100 dollar bill for an over cooked, veiny steak and tasteless pork that took about an hour too long to come to our table. I took my girlfriend out for what I hoped would be a nice dinner. After all, most people on here rate this place highly. The place had a classy and cozy vibe often associated with high end food, but don't be fooled. I had the PA Proud Denver steak that came with crab couscous and asparagus. The steak was overlooked and veiny. It blew my mind just how veiny it was. It became apparent the chef/ chef team doesnt particularly care about the choice of meat it serves its customers. The crab couscous sure sounds delicious doesnt it? Well, if you like your crab couscous cooked in what tastes like 2 full sticks of butter, this is the couscous for you. It was disgusting. Even the asparagus was limp and tasteless. It was an unfortunately disgusting meal that left me completely dissatisfied. The only saving grace was leaving this place and stopping at giant for pints of Ben and Jerry's. Some other review said it best: I could have had a better, much better, and cheaper meal at outback steak house, without having to deal with the "high end, la-ti-da fancy pantsness" of the place. The server was nice and attentive, but decent service can't make up for shitty meal. Moreover, we placed our order at around 740, and it didn't come out until a solid hour + later (it wasn't particularly busy either) My girlfriends review follows: The service was okay, however all other aspects were subpar. I went to the inne with my boyfriend, and I ordered the prime pork loin. My pork was flavorless and left much to be desired. I have been to the General Warren Inne twice now, and it has been a pleasure each time. It is an older colonial building, but seems to be in pretty good shape. I could do without the Olde English spelling of the word "Inne" (seems like they're trying too hard) but I guess I'll forgive it. My sister hosted her wedding rehearsal dinner at the Inne. I don't remember all that much about it because it was a few years ago (and of course because I had a few drinks). We had cocktails outside on their patio, and I remember the ambiance was very nice - lots of little lights on the well kept landscaping. And I also remember being impressed with the quality of hors d'oeuvres. On a much more recent trip, my family went to dinner there the day after Thanksgiving. It was an excellent evening. There is complimentary valet parking and a coat room, which I found very convenient. We started out in the bar to have a glass of wine. The staff was attentive and friendly. The bar has a nice warm feeling to it. There is a real wood fireplace in the bar area, and the colonial style trim on the furniture, walls, and ceiling make it a very relaxing spot for a drink. We moved into the dining room, which was surprisingly crowded. Be prepared for a bunch of bluehaired moldies with turtlenecks and tweed jackets, and old ladies with really stiff hair. I felt very slightly under-dressed in a sweater and khakis. Probably a collared shirt would have been dressy enough, but you won't be overdressed at all here unless you come in black tie. I'm guessing this place gets a fair amount of local traffic (I know my parents go there a lot). Even though it was busy, the servers were friendly all evening and quickly corrected a mistake with my Mom's dessert. They even tossed in her dessert for free as an apology. The wine selection seemed fairly extensive, though I'm not all that educated in this arena, so it's just my overall impression. The food was high quality, and I'd definitely go back. I had their signature "snapper" turtle soup as an appetizer, and I have to say I was impressed, having never eaten turtle soup before. The veal medallions I had for dinner were excellent. Evidently both my parents felt their steaks were a little overcooked, but other than that, the food was great. They also had a fairly extensive dessert selection with a colonial flair to it, and all the items we tried (cheesecake, pumpkin something or other) were tasty. The table side Caesar salad for 2 is not to be missed. Totally steakhouse authentic! Daughter (6) had the small plate filet minon and devoured it -- perfectly tender. Husband was disappointed with the size and lack of flavor in the grouper (on saffron rice with a citrus glaze) - the rice was under seasoned and not a hint of saffron and the grouper was barely a fillet -- for the price we expected so much more. My beef Wellington came out as ordered except I had hoped for the crust to have been a little but more done (was soggy in spots). Nevertheless a giant portion and I could not finish it all. A must skip- shortrib tacos. Though described as Asian shortrib it was more like a tepid shortrib w Asianish BBQ sauce smeared atop it, sitting on a very cold piece of squash on a store bought tiny tortilla. Tortilla was not warmed either. Our server Maureen was great, personable and attentive. Next time I will save room for dessert stick w ordering the classic American and avoid the seafood and nouveau Asia inspired dishes. read more

The interior of this place is very cozy but roomy. It seems to cater mostly to the elderly crowd. I was here for company holiday lunch, so we had a room reserved for us in the back. They have a decent size bar as well. They had music playing in the background, not sure if this is regular or because it was during holidays only. We had a set lunch menu. It began with a salad that was somewhat refreshing but lacked salad dressing. My entree was salmon with asparagus, nothing special, decently cooked salmon. For dessert, I had the mascarpone cheesecake, not too smooth. Overall, the food here is so so, not sure what the pricing is because I didn't have to pay for it. Been here a few times in the last two months with groups of 6-8. Each time we had very good service and good food. The theme is "classic". Sat in the large dining room and a very cozy, charming and intimate rear dining room. With a fire in the hearth, candles and white linen on table, the ambiance is very nice. Can't say enough about the staff. Highly attentive, not the least bit over solicitous or oppressive. Our server worked very hard to make sure everyone enjoyed themselves and left feeling pampered. In another 15-20 years, I think I'll fit right in at the bar, but for now I am bit young for the scene at 50. The live music was good on each visit. (Does anyone know if Hal McKay is still playing in or around Chester County)? Had some great apps; lamb ravioli and oysters stand out. The crab brulee was creamy/crabby/cheesy goodness. The charcuterie board had some nice stuff, but was too cold at service. The house-cured salmon pastrami was a miss. I had the diver scallops on risotto and a grilled grouper on a sweet artichoke and zucchini bread. In both cases, the protein was a little more cooked, and flavor profiles a little more conservative, than I like. The Chateaubriand and Beef Wellington with Bearnaise were a hit, as was the duck. The wine list had more than a few nice choices. Yums up to the Adelsheim Pinot Noir and Silverado Cab. Desserts were all quite good, sight twists or solid execution on the classics. Good coffee, too. Chocolate mints were the sort of perfect footnote to a timeless, increasingly rare fine dining experience. read more

The atmosphere is lovely but you will definitely pay for it although lunch isn't too pricey. The beef wellington is probably their best dish; the meat is extremely tender and seasoned perfectly. Enjoyed spending time at the General Warren Inne over the weekend for a friend's wedding, held at the Inne. Quaint, charming, elegant - everything came together perfectly for the rehearsal dinner, ceremony, and reception. I was in the wedding party, and also have to compliment the staff (especially Patrick) for helping coordinate timing, planning, setup and execution. The staff was on the ball, friendly, gracious and helpful. Rehearsal dinner: Held in one of the side dining rooms, with just lovely atmosphere - cozy, warm, inviting, guests walked into the room to find two large dining tables set up with full place settings. We mingled for a while and enjoyed some delicious apps and plenty of wine (the servers kept it comin'!). Dinner was excellent - creamy bacon potato soup + massive crab cake served with mashed potatoes and asparagus, probably the best crab cake I've ever had. I chose the pecan/rum cheesecake for dessert. scrumptious. Wedding day! The bridal party arrived early to get ready in the oh-so-charming presidential suite with the special bride. This room was plenty big for us to get ready in. There was a huge sitting room adjoined to the also large bedroom, lots of mirrors and natural light - it was so old fashioned and picturesque. Ceremony and cocktail hour went smooth as can be with the aid of Patrick and his calm guidance. Again, more compliments to the staff for hustling with food and drinks, and really making the rounds to all the guests. Dinner was served in a larger dining room, which again, looked gorgeous all set up with everything. I chose the sweet potato puree soup + striped bass/scallops - all fantastic and piping hot. Later we enjoyed the delicious wedding cake and coffee service. Enjoyed the leisurely meal and mingling time in the charming dining room after people had finished. The group was pretty much at max capacity, so space was tight once people started moving around, especially when servers were trying to get through with food or empty plates. This was such a fantastic venue choice by the bride and groom. If you're looking for a smaller scale venue for your event/wedding, consider the GWI! Food, service, ambiance, everything was just outstanding. Very impressed. read more

The good and the bad. Location and setting are historic and beautiful. Both indoor and outdoor dinning have tremendous ambiance. It was very busy for Tuesday night. Wait staff was challenged. Beef Wellington, Steak Fritz and Chicken Schnitzel were excellent. Salmon was average. And, what happened with the shrimp cocktail and Caeser salad??? Shimp was small, slimy and had an off taste while the Caeser was made with chopped iceberg lettuce and a very unCaeser dull dressing. Not what one should expect at the General Warren. Come on, if you were running out of supplies, just tell us! For all the effort put into making our evening memorable, this took the wind out of our sails. My wife came home and had a sandwich for our 42nd wedding anniversary. The shrimp was taken off our bill. This is an old charming building that has a bar area, dining area, and a few guest rooms for overnight stays. Over the years, I've been here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and have spent the night on a few occasions. In terms of food, I've always enjoyed my meals here. It can be a bit chilly in the building, so you might want to dress accordingly in the winter months. We've enjoyed our couple of overnight stays here. The rooms are small and quant and the comfort of the beds is just OK. The inn keeper is not always there and on one visit, we had a problem with the toilet overflowing and we had difficulty finding someone to help us. I ended up going down to the bar area and finding someone down there. This isn't someplace I go to often, but for special occasions, we do like to go here from time to time. read more

Came here for a function and was impressed. The place opened in 1745 as the General Vernon Inne, where it became a Tory hangout, counting among its guests the last British Governor of Pennsylvania, John Penn, William's grandson. In fact, the infamous Paoli massacre of American revolutionary troops by British regulars under Major General Charles Gray, another of the Admiral Vernon's guests, was planned within its walls. After 150 years as a place of imbibement, it became the Temperance Hotel, and folded as it did not dispense alcohol. In 1980 it once again became the General Warren Inne. The Inn's walls are supposedly haunted and the ghosts of Revolutionary soldiers are said to march through the building. A spirit in the bar likes blowing on girl's necks and turning the television upside down. As a result, General Warren's ghost earned the Inn an appearance on TV's Unsolved Mysteries. The ample parking area is also hosted by valet parking. Entering the facility one gets a whiff of history permeating the well decorated walls of this historic edifice. The bar is off to one side, with dark oak paneling reminiscing of an old town club. The dining room on the other side of the entrance is sumptuous and well appointed. We entered the banquet room where we had the function and it was just appropriate for the group. The best part of the evening was the food. No rubber chicken here as it is so often in scheduled functions. I had one of the best pieces of filet mignon I've ever had. Vegetables were crunchy and fresh. And the salad was undoubtedly fresh and tasty. Together with the outstanding service we received, the excellent food, and the stately surroundings, this venue is highly recommended. read more

Came here on a whim for dinner. Didnt have to wait too long and the service was very friendly. Valet parking in the front. Definitely an older (think 70s and up) in the dining room while the younger (50s) crowd stayed in the tavern. Aside from the wedding party, we were probably the only people in their 20's in the place. The decor certainly catered to that crowd as well - it had older country cottage feel to it. Service was decent, if not a little pretentious because we were wearing jeans and casual clothes. Food was ok but not that impressive by my NYC standards. The veal shank was a little cold though the flavor was decent and the meat was tender. Pumpkin polenta was nice, though from my experience the polenta was ground a bit more coarsely than other versions I've had. My girlfriend had the Beef wellington, which was steep at $37. The filet in her dish wasn't very tender and had more beef flavor than I expected from a filet - tasted kind of like a top sirloin or something. Her snapping turtle soup was pretty decent though and the flatbread appetizer we got was probably the best thing I had all night. Probably won't return. I was recently a bridesmaid at a small wedding here at the General Warren. Tim was more than amazing. He helped us with all of our little Pinterest-type projects, had solutions for issues that we ourselves did not foresee, and generally helped the wedding run smoothly. One tiny example - we wanted to grow these water beads to make our own flower arrangements, and he provided a large bucket to grow the beads overnight, allowed us to set up an assembly line the night before, and then provided multiple buckets of water for me to submerge orchids in tall vases. Talk about putting up with a lot of nonsense! Every staff member there was excellent, courteous, and had a wicked sense of humor. I cannot say enough good things about the General Warren! Also, try the turtle soup and Caesar salad. They are amazing! read more

We had a memorial luncheon here. The owner was highly responsive, helpful, and very personable. He was very flexible and accommodating. He managed to pull everything together when are expected attendance doubled from about 35 to 70. He managed to move things around and make everything go flawlessly. Overpriced and not very tasty. I ordered a$45 beef Wellington. The puff pastry was mushy and if that was filet, I'm the Queen of England. I sent it back and asked for the crab cake. We have always loved the Happy Hour bar at General Warren until they changed the menu. We went last night and found a very limited offering consisting mostly of vegetarian and shellfish dishes. No beef. I ended up ordering something from the dinner menu which still left me disappointed. We enjoyed the scene but won't hurry back for the bar food. While they don't have a gluten-free menu, the staff is more than willing to go out of their way to recommend both naturally GF dishes along with ones that can be modified to make them GF. According to my host, this place was a hangout for the British soldiers during colonial times. Whether true or not, the ambience is wonderful. While I was there for a business dinner, I can see that this would be a great place for a romantic dinner for two. read more

We had a great evening once again. My wife had the salmon and I had the elk chops with bacon cheddar grit. We both loved our meals. Kim provides great service; attentive but not over bearing. I've been to the General Warren several times for happy hour with the co-workers and for lunch. While the crowd has always seemed to be a more mature clientele, I know they would like to attract a younger patron. The drink specials are really cool recently I've had an Apple Cider Sangria that was refreshingly autumn. I've always been happy with the food, service and staff. read more
