My wife and I were attending the "Song of the Mountains" Show of 03 May at the Lincoln Theater, so we stayed at the General Francis Marion Hotel, which is literally right next door. Be prepared to go back in time. This charming hotel was built in the late-1920s. Except for the updated bathroom - which was really nice in and of itself - the room is classy antique. The bed was wonderful; linens were great; and the shower was great; Staff couldn't have been nicer. There are great restaurants across the street, plus the Hotel's own "Swamp Fox" Restaurant for dinner. A wonderful experience minus one thing. The continental breakfast left much to be desired. It would be nice to have had yogurt in the 'frig; and more than one type of juice. Microwaved Jimmy Dean's Breakfast Croissant Sandwiches did not fit the ambiance of this old lovely hotel. Biscuits and gravy would be a nice touch. Otherwise, our stay was lovely. read more

After a long 11 hour drive from NJ to AR, I stopped here to rest for the night. It was a rainy day and is expected to get worse the whole night. This is a cute place and more conveniently they have an awesome restaurant downstairs. I had to spoil myself because I just got done with a laborious travel assignment and was glad to be driving back home after 3 months of travel nursing. The moment you walk in you can tell it's history was well preserved. Everything was clean and nice, the hallways spelled good, the room I was staying in was clean and really well maintained. You can tell from the decorations that this is an old hotel, built in 1921 I think. Of course, if you know Virginia well enough, you know that several soldiers/citizens/men/women/kids have died from the wars. My experience here would've been amazing, BUT my room turned out to be haunted. I can hear knocking/tapping in the living room table, in the dresser (like the wooden hangers hitting the dresser kinda noise, but it's just once), on the table next to my bed and a wall divider between my bed and the living room. No matter how many times I asked it to stop or no matter how many times I prayed, it still continued and seemed to be getting louder. I thought it was just the rain or wind and that the walls are old and what not. I literally shook the dresser trying to imitate the noise, I shook the living room table or the wall divider and I could not mimic that tapping sound. I left at 0200 while it was still raining out and told the front desk lady what I experienced. Apparently, they have had reports of ghostly experiences but the lady said no one has really complained about my room. She was generous enough to switch my room but I mean that's not really going to change anything if this ghost lives in this building. I declined her offer and left. I found a gas station and slept in my car. read more

I'm partial to small city boutique hotels, and I had a very good experience at Gen Francis Marion. I've wanted to stay there for a long time, and finally did. The staff was accommodating and seemed to enjoy being there. The room was clean, comfortable, and served it's purpose well. If you're looking for a resort style room that you want to spend a lot of time in, then this isn't your place, and probably not your corner of the state. My only complaint was the fact that the restaurant didn't yet have a liquor license. I really wanted to try the restaurant, but my guests and I are not going somewhere that we can't get a cocktail or wine/beer. It's my understanding that they were supposed to get it Dec 18, so hopefully that worked out. There are plenty of food places within walking distance, and I spent a fair amount of money in those other places. The complaints about the continental breakfast are ridiculous. The hotel is very reasonably priced and if you're expecting a sumptuous fresh cooked breakfast at those rates, you really haven't been anywhere, have you? Anyway, I recommend it, and I will stay there again. Hopefully the restaurant will be fully functional by that time. read more

We had a nice stay here in Marion. The people are lovely in town. Definitely go by Corbett's Jewelers if you're in the area. The owners are so sweet and personable! The hotel is unique, was clean and our particular room was comfortable. Our fridge did make a strange knocking noise every few minutes and we briefly questioned if our room was haunted! Haha...no other oddities happened, so I'm assuming it was just a faulty fridge. The Mexican restaurant in the hotel is very good, and the staff is nice! The breakfast could use some work though. I had to ask for decaf to be brewed since it wasn't readily available. There was no fresh cream or sugar...only the proportioned little cups of fake creamer to be found. The only food options were pop tarts, sugary oatmeal packets, waffles and tangerines that morning. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again, other than the poor breakfast offerings. Hard to believe a boutique hotel this nice has a breakfast like this. I would think it would be best to not offer breakfast at all, and put efforts into a nicer coffee bar for guests. From previous reviews the breakfast is a common theme. I was also taken back by the checkout process. We were asked to sign a receipt with an area for a tip!! For what?? I've paid my fees for my stay already and am happy to tip my maid or room service, but will not be tipping on my actual stay at a hotel. If you want good sleep, don't bother. While this hotel looks great overall, staff were friendly, and the room was spotless, there is an air handling system near the ceiling that makes a constant loud rushing noise - All The Time. I have stayed in many hotels over the years and never had one with such a constant LOUD roar. It made it very difficult to sleep. The second night I even wore earplugs all night and the noise was still intrusive. For example, when the heat came on, its noise was barely noticeable over the constant loud whooshing from the air handling system. The air was also very dry and the second night, my nose stopped up for some unknown reason (it went away as soon as I left the room). Since the only reason I stay at a hotel is to sleep, I think 2 stars is generous. Especially given the hefty pricetag for the room. The food was surprisingly good and the location is convenient. But, I am sad to say, we decided that we will not be back. Best wishes if you decide to take your chances here. It's not recommended if sleep is your priority. read more

I stayed there the other night. I booked 7 rooms for our group. The rooms are nice, not amazing. No way this place is in the top 150 hotels in North America as they advertise. Nit picking: there was a clump of long black hairs on my bathroom floor that I had to scoop up and flush away. My shower control handle was broken. My view was an alley. Their free breakfast was the worst I've seen! $80 cheap hotel chains offer a better breakfast. Would you believe that there are no thermostats in the rooms? You have to call the front desk to have your room temperature changed. Crazy inconvenient! I heard that if you loose a key you are charged $100. You read correctly, $100 to replace a $5 metal key! Here's where they lost me: in my travels I lost my wallet. Upon check in I provided a picture of my license. The clerk asked me to verify my credit card which I did. He informed another employee about my situation and what he did to help me check in. She said, you can't do that, we need a physical credit card. But he lost his wallet. Sorry, we need a card. A friend in my group offered them to use his card. I said that I didn't want to inconvenience my friend and asked if they'd hold his card as required but charge my card, the one which was used to reserve all 7 rooms. They said no it's hotel policy. I complained that was not good customer service. I was in the unique and unfortunate circumstance of having lost my wallet and needed their help. Sorry, it's hotel policy. I asked to speak with a manager. She just repeated the same response. I asked what she would do if a single hotel guest arrived to check in and had lost their wallet. She said that she tell them they had to leave. Yup, that's what she said! So, if you're looking for some southern hospitality and expected customer service you need to look elsewhere. read more

The first of hotel of our winter cross country road trip. Why Southern Virginia you ask? It's home to Town House Restaurant, which is a destination restaurant if I've ever seen one. There are no hotel options in the town where the restaurant resides, so we opted for the town of Marion 10 miles away. The hotel is situated in downtown Marion, which is a cute little town with lots of charm. The hotel itself is historic and has been well maintained with just enough boutique historic feel, yet modern amenities. The hardwood floors are a nice touch, but after hearing the click, click, clicking of our neighbors, I decided that maybe a bunch of area rugs would be well served. Our bathroom was HUGE and the four poster bed was sweet. The free breakfast in the restaurant off the lobby leaves a bit to be desired, but hey, it's a free hotel breakfast, so expectations shouldn't be too high. If you find yourself wanting to dine at the Town House Restaurant (and every food-obsessed person needs to dine here) the General Francis Marion Hotel is a great option. read more

Had a great experience here while hiking the Appalachian trail. We got stuck in town an extra day waiting for the post office to reopen and decided to treat ourselves to a stay at the General Francis Marion. The rooms were lovely and clean and we had a great time during our stay. After we left, I got a call from the front desk saying that I had left my credit card and ID there. I was amazed to hear that the owner of the hotel is a hiker as well and he personally delivered my lost items to me at the next town, truly above and beyond! This past week I was married at Hungry Mother State Park and my cousin and his partner came from Greensboro, NC to help share this special day with family. He told me they had a really nice experience at the General Francis Marion Hotel- until they didn't. The hotel is gorgeous and up until they checked out my cousin and his partner enjoyed their stay and the hotel team members were accommodating. Neither my cousin nor his partner smoke and upon checkout they were accused of smoking in the hotel room because some of my cousin's hair thickening product residue was in the bathroom sink. They were charged a $200 fee and were asked to come back to the hotel to explain themselves. When my cousin tried to show them the product that the hotel felt appeared to be ashes they refused to entertain the idea that it was anything other than ashes and decided to make the magnanimous gesture of only charging them $100 despite the fact that they weren't smoking in the room, as neither of them even smoke. It really besmirched such a wonderful experience and I feel awful that a family member of mine who had traveled so far and taken time off from work had to deal with something like this. I will never recommend this venue to any of my friends, acquaintances, or family because of how my cousin and his partner were treated at the end of their otherwise enjoyable stay. We are calling this two stars because the hotel is nice and they did enjoy the stay, but the treatment at the very end when checking out negated nearly all of the positives about their experience there. read more

Old school hotel with charm. My girlfriend and I stayed there for 1 night to eat at Town House restaurant (see review). The hotel has a lot of history and is very small and charming. The hallway to our room smelled a little musty but not so much so to be awful. The room was small but nice, the bathroom was quite big and very nice. The bed was old fashion springs and the sheets were a little rough but overall pretty comfy. Its a great place to stay for going to Town House or just stop through for a night. Prices pretty good for what it is. Overall I recommend this hotel read more

Horrible! The customer service is the worst. Do not use this hotel for an event. We had two servers for a party of 40. They were terrible. After waiting an hour plus for over priced food it was served ICE cold. A complete disappointment and total waste of money. read more

One star is already to much. This place is beautiful but let me remind you to never judge a book by its cover. Be warned that they will get every penny they can get out of you before you have to turn your credit card off. It was by far the worst stay and I use to have to travel. My family stayed at the General Frances Hotel in Marion ,VA and I wasn't impressed. The service wasn't the best, the food was cold and I had charges on my credit card with no explanation. The rooms are very small and you can hear what's happening in the next room. Would not recommend. read more

Don't let the pretty ballroom fool you. If you plan to have an event here, spare yourself the disaster. I took part in a wedding held at the General Francis Marion hotel, and I couldn't help but feel sympathy for the newly weds after all was said and done. The wedding coordinator was beyond rude on multiple occasions, which is unacceptable when being paid to help the event run smoothly. The bride walked with no music, the bouquets were tucked out of site and left for the bridesmaids to figure out. There were only two servers, which led to the photographer serving the wedding cake. Also due to the lack of staff, there was no breakfast served the following morning which was promised to the guests. Quality means nothing when it's at the hand of horrible service. I really recommend saving your money and looking for another option. The owners of this hotel are cheap and it is understaffed. read more

The only reason I came to this hotel and paid generously to stay in a closet sized room was because I was attending a wedding. We were all excited because the hotel is beautiful and sounded like a great place. The front desk man and house keeper were very friendly which was the ONLY good thing about our stay there! First of all the "wedding planner" was horrible, rude and no help at all. Secondly, you could tell the hotel was not used to doing big events as everything was completely unorganized and left to the bride to figure out herself. She received no help AT ALL. Thirdly, the poor bride had to walk down the aisle with NO music, in complete silence. After the ceremony, we waited about an hour for the food. Once we got our food, FINALLY, it was ice cold! The service was as slow as can be.. With about 60 guests, there were only 2 servers. Also, there was supposed to be a great breakfast but we ended up leaving and finding our own breakfast. I would highly recommend you find a different hotel! WORST STAY EVER!! read more

We were traveling south and looking for a place to stop. Based on the good reviews, I called about 5 to see if they had rooms available for tonight. Amy at the desk said yes, and gave me the rates. I explained that we were traveling and not sure how far we would make it. I called back a bit later to hold the room and gave her payment info. I even called again a few hours later to make sure a later check in time was ok. When we arrived, she had booked the room for the next night and could only give us a more expensive room for tonight. She did not apologize or take ownership for the situation or do anything to try to make it better other than to offer that "There's a Comfort Inn a few towns over." She even seemed to ignore the fact that I remembered her name from the phone (since we spoke 3 times) and knew she was the one who had taken the wrong reservation.
