You can download a list from their website and get a lot of good information detailing their locations. The purpose of the rest area is just that, to get a break from the drive, use the restroom, and possibly get a snack. Per their website, "Loitering, camping, soliciting, consuming alcoholic beverages and staying overnight are prohibited. North Carolina's Rest Areas." This one is off the right (west) side of the interstate when traveling south on I-95. The truck parking is closest to the road and the car parking is farthest from the road. There are two car lots and plenty of parking. The building and area look brand new. There are two single-story buildings separated by a covered walkway. One is the welcome center and the other is the restrooms. The restroom building has an open lobby with some very pretty terrazzo designs on the floor. The bathrooms were very clean and it was a nice place to stop. The Surry County rest area is one of the better ones as it does have the usual clean rest rooms and stocked vending machines, but it's far enough from the highway that you don't hear the road noise when you have your windows cracked and you're catching some winks. They're all operated by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and open 24/7, with amenities like restrooms, vending, picnic areas, and pet zones--though overnight parking isn't officially allowed beyond a few hours. Recently, we were travelling through northbound on I-81 and decided to stop at the one by Christiansburg. The sign at the location said that it is at Mile 108 North. It is a pull-off with truck parking closer to the road and car parking closer to the forest. There is a single building with restrooms. There are about 50 car parking spots. There are picnic tables around the land adjacent to the building. We went there in fall but during the spring the trees must provide some great shade for the tables and buildings. The area was busy when we stopped by but seemed clean and well maintained both in the restroom and around the walkways. Overall, a nice easy-on/easy-off rest area.

On my last trip down, towing a very fully loaded trailer behind my RAM Rebel 1500 pickup, At about 12 midnight, I had a trailer tire blow out just after gettin on I-77 from I-81. I called the I-81 travel plaza for roadside assistance. The mechanic on duty was Don. He arrived at my location a couple hours later as he was out on another service call when I called. He brought a new trailer tire, made sure my damaged rim was good after getting the blown tire off. It took him a while, but he got me back on the road and I arrived at my destination in SC safely. The service was GREAT, Don was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. If I had to find a negative something to comment on, it would be charging me $125 for a $76 tire, and $293 for the service. It is what it is and they know they have you by the short curly hairs in your nether region, so they really over charge you. Also, they do not take credit cards or checks, so they will follow you to the next exit and wait for you at the ATM. It can really be expected. I'm sure they've been screwed out of payment by so E people so they make sure you're not gonna beat them out of their due, even if it is exorbitant. Lesson learned: don't hit the road without a good spare and the proper tools. Would I recommend them? In a pinch, ABSOLUTELY. Don was awesome and very diligent about all his work. I've been in this business a long time and they tried to tell me I had a special tire. mind you I've been buying these 245/70/17.5 for low deck trailers for years. never paid $850 per tire. Stay away from these crooks. I was also told they gotta pay for all them expensive toys they keep buying. Crooks.

The trees and plants are well groomed. Parking is plentiful for both cars and trucks. They even have parking for cars with trailers. In addition to well kept and clean restrooms, they have a very nice vending area and many outdoor tables with plenty of space to stretch your legs or those of your four legged family members. Some of the outdoor tables even have covers over them in case it rains or to shield yourself from the sun. This was a great stop!

Insights: price for two week stay was competitive and flexible if we needed to add/remove a day, breakfast (hubs like the pastry selections and I was pleased with the coffee which was make as you go from a self-serve machine that grinds the beans and then is a pour over), Holiday Inn member points, corporate owned (this has become important to us as we have had huge issues with independently owned hotels like Best Westerns that corporate refuses to address), location in town is easy to get in and out and central to food, pharmacy, and other stores that we needed such as UPS/Lowes. Facility is newer, clean and smells clean but needs some TLC including carpet/floors, bathroom detail in the room such as floor corners and window wells in the rooms. Bed linens were clean and bed was comfy. Room set-up worked well but we selected a room with more space because of the extended stay. Employees were super friendly and responsive; no problem requesting more towels. We used the laundry room (one washer/one dryer) as we often are tromping around our acreage and need to wash tshirts and such; the machines ran well and did its job. The black out shade worked its magic and the window was large and offered a great view of Mt. Airy. We would definitely stay here again. We definitely will stay here again.
