Finding beauty at the rest stop: 39°!
Courtenay O.

Pit stop with beautiful flowers and history! Bonus! Women's restrooms were clean, with hot water and hot drying machines, and activated door in and out for physically challenged - or those wishing to avoid germs. Afterwards, I toured the grounds, finding beauty (daffodils?) and history (Truss bridge). Also got some safety tips on a sign, near the dispenser for dog poop bags. This is a nice stop for walking, learning, relieving oneself, and soaking up nature's beauty.

Serving the northbound traffic on I-81 not too far from Roanoke, this rest is similar to others on Virginia's interstates with a central brick building that has separate men's and women's and another building with vending machines. There are some other interesting features here including a neat bridge and some shade from the sun if you were thinking of taking a nap. It's a good spot for a stretch. Lots of people who died from smallpox buried here

It's clean, free and not too crowded, no downside at all. If you're close by and need a bathroom break, or just some time to stretch your legs, stop on by. It was a little cold to hang out too long, but noticed some nice looking picnic tables, and there are vending machines as well. Check out the commemorative plaque as well, some interesting history here as well.

Needed a place to stop and rest as well as use the restroom. I dreaded using the restroom because, I mean, it's a rest stop lol. The whole area is very well lit and has plenty of parking. A nice amount of vending options are available, they even have a Starbucks machine with craps at $3.25. There are many small shelter areas to set up lunch or a meal. There are grills and a fish cleaning station at a couple of shelter spots. Very clean and well kept landscaping. The restroom for the women was surprisingly very clean for a rest stop. I felt comfortable enough to do my business and wash my hands without turning up my nose in disgust the whole time. There was a woman who came in to service the restroom while I was in there and she was very sweet, she had a mop, and a nice amount of cleaning equipment to use. I will definitely stop here again and maybe try to get some sleep.

Another quality Virginia Rest Area sponsored by Geico! This one is located on Interstate 81 (I-81) Northbound, very close to the town of Elliston, VA - even though it's named for Ironto, VA - which is a tad farther away from the physical rest stop. As usual, stopped in to stretch the legs, use the restroom facilities, and get my bearings. From the VDOT web site: Safety Rest Area: We are open 24 hours per day, 365 days a year. The facility is open to all vehicles. Amenities: Handicapped accessible Telephones, including phones for the hearing impaired Picnic area with grills Vending machines Pet rest area See attendant on-site if a family rest room is needed.

Small rest area and has the basics. Easy to access but could be improved compared to other stops.

Stopped here for a bio-break during a long drive along I-81. The facilities were clean and well-maintained.

This is one of the cleanest rest areas I've ever been to. It's in a great location, since there are no other places to stop in this area.

I-81 Service Center - The blown tire while awaiting road service.

On my last trip down, towing a very fully loaded trailer behind my RAM Rebel 1500 pickup, At about 12 midnight, I had a trailer tire blow out just after gettin on I-77 from I-81. I called the I-81 travel plaza for roadside assistance. The mechanic on duty was Don. He arrived at my location a couple hours later as he was out on another service call when I called. He brought a new trailer tire, made sure my damaged rim was good after getting the blown tire off. It took him a while, but he got me back on the road and I arrived at my destination in SC safely. The service was GREAT, Don was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. If I had to find a negative something to comment on, it would be charging me $125 for a $76 tire, and $293 for the service. It is what it is and they know they have you by the short curly hairs in your nether region, so they really over charge you. Also, they do not take credit cards or checks, so they will follow you to the next exit and wait for you at the ATM. It can really be expected. I'm sure they've been screwed out of payment by so E people so they make sure you're not gonna beat them out of their due, even if it is exorbitant. Lesson learned: don't hit the road without a good spare and the proper tools. Would I recommend them? In a pinch, ABSOLUTELY. Don was awesome and very diligent about all his work. Thank you I-81 travel plaza and THANK YOU Don M.

I am absolutely furious about what happened here, and I will never stop at this gas station again…read more I regularly travel through this area for work and have been a frequent customer at Caverns Market for gas, food, coffee, and to fill my water bottle. After this experience, I have completely lost my trust and respect for this business. Yesterday, I stopped here for gas, filled my Owala water bottle, and grabbed a coffee before leaving for an hour-long drive to work. After arriving at work, I realized I must have left my bottle at the store when I got my coffee. About four hours later, I got back on the road and drove another hour back to Caverns Market. That's roughly FIVE HOURS total since I had left the bottle there, not the next day, not a week later, but literally just a few hours. When I arrived, an employee told me that she remembered seeing my Owala at the front counter next to the register. So the store had, in fact, found my property and had it in their possession. Then I was told it had simply disappeared. That is what absolutely infuriates me. I understand that I am responsible for my own belongings, and if I had simply left my bottle somewhere and another customer picked it up, that's one thing. But once an employee found my property and it was sitting behind the register, the situation was completely different. I reasonably expected the store to keep it somewhere safe until I could return, especially considering I came back within hours. Instead, I was essentially told, "Yeah, we saw it, but now it's gone." The employees I spoke with were rude, dismissive, and showed virtually no concern about the situation. There was no meaningful attempt to figure out what happened or take responsibility for what had occurred. The customers standing behind me looked genuinely confused and upset on my behalf. Their reactions honestly said everything about how ridiculous the situation was. And yes, I know an Owala is "just a water bottle." But these bottles can cost $30-$40, and that's not even the point. It's the principle. If a business finds a customer's property and keeps it at the register, I expect that business to exercise a basic level of responsibility and care for it. I came back approximately five hours later after making a long commute specifically to retrieve it. The fact that it was apparently there and then somehow "just disappeared" is completely unacceptable to me. I have no idea what happened to my bottle, and I am not going to accuse anyone of taking it without proof. But I can tell you this: the way this situation was handled destroyed my trust in this business. This isn't about $30-$40, It's about accountability, ethics, and how you treat your customers when something goes wrong. I used to regularly stop here. I will never spend another dollar at Caverns Market, and I will absolutely be telling people I know about this experience so they can make their own decision about whether they want to support this business. I have lost all respect and trust for Caverns Market.

First, the location is close to I-81 and convenient for the 20 minute drive to Blacksburg. Second, the interior lobby is cheerful with colorful glass art. Third, the fitness center was nicer than expected with several treadmills. Fourth, the queen-size beds were quite comfortable. Finally, the DIY breakfast from 6am-10am is what you would expect from Hampton Inns. Overall, I would recommend this Hampton Inn if you're passing through the area and need a location that is convenient to I-81.

It worked fine for what we needed while traveling, but I would consider it more of an average hotel experience. The lady who checked us in was very helpful and friendly. Check in went smoothly, and we had no issues getting settled into our room. The breakfast was also good. It was your typical hotel breakfast with the usual options, but everything we had was good and it was nice having breakfast available before getting back on the road. One of my biggest disappointments was the fitness room. I like being able to get a workout in while traveling, but only one of the three treadmills was working. Having three treadmills available looks great, but it does not help much when two of them are out of service. Hopefully they get those repaired soon. Another thing we noticed was a strong chemical smell throughout the hallways. It smelled like the carpets had recently been cleaned, but either too much cleaning solution was used or the carpets had not been completely rinsed and dried. The smell was pretty noticeable when walking through the halls and made them smell damp rather than freshly cleaned. I appreciate that they are cleaning the carpets, but whatever process was used could definitely be improved. The hotel itself served its purpose for our trip. The staff interaction we had was good, breakfast was convenient, and we were able to get some rest before continuing on our travels. Nothing happened that would make me say this was a terrible stay, but there were enough small issues that I could not rate the experience higher. With some attention to the fitness equipment and the carpet cleaning situation, this could easily be a better experience. For a quick overnight stop while traveling, it gets the job done, but based on this particular stay, I would consider it an average hotel experience overall.
