My wife and I took our first camping trip to Dixie Caverns Campground, a full hookup campground, and we will definitely make it a go-to destination! Very clean and peaceful once you get used to the road noise from nearby I-81. However, with the proximity of the highway to the campground, getting there is very convenient when pulling an RV. The staff is top notch and super friendly! The campground is also on the outskirts of town so getting supplies or going to dinner is easily done. I hesitantly highly recommend Dixie Caverns Campground only because I don't want it to be fully booked the next time we call for a reservation! The wife and I paid a visit to my son attending a nearby University. After much discussion, we decided to visit the Dixie Caverns. We very much enjoyed the tour of the cavern led by a high schooler. He was both informational and entertaining. The gem store was a small room seen as you entered to purchase your tour tickets. The "antique" store encompassing one end of the facility was more of a collectibles area. There was a wide range of items for purchase from what appeared to be several vendors. All in all, an enjoyable visit that is worth an hour or two of your time if you're passing through the area. read more

Final Virginia caverns tour on my VA caverns odyssey that started back in December. Dixie Caverns is furthest away from the DC area (plan an overnight in nearby Salem, Roanoke, or Christiansburg/Blacksburg). The caverns, like Endless Caverns, is part of a campgrounds facility. An antiques/collectibles store is attached to the caverns store. The caverns store sells the usual assortment of gems, rocks, cave lanterns, and tee shirts. Present a Dixie Caverns brochure and get $2 off the already-well-priced caverns tour cost ($16 with the brochure). The tour is made all the more entertaining because of a good tour guide. This is the takeaway from all caverns I toured in the state. Brandon was an excellent guide, informative with a dry sense of humor. He made sure that everyone in the group was careful going through the many sets of stairs (some very slippery) and even told us to watch out for pointed formations sticking out of the narrow corridors. This caverns is unique in that you actually walk UP a hill during tour, versus going down into a subterranean world. Some of the larger "rooms" are quite impressive and others, like the "wedding room," are small and quirky. Nice variety of formations. Overall the caverns tour is engaging but not quite as awe-inspiring as Endless or Grand Caverns. There are not many public caverns in this part of Virginia (the closest others are Caverns at Natural Bridge and Bristol Caverns on the Tennessee side of Bristol). I can't believe I attended Virginia Tech, passed by this place many times, and never went in. Glad to remedy that this weekend. read more

This place honestly looks pretty underwhelming from the outside. However, the cavern tour was quite interesting. It doesn't really compare to Luray or some of the larger caves, but the price reflects that. We thought it a good value. The gift shop has some nice items at very reasonable prices. The antique store appears to be a consignment style, with booths of items from various sellers, which makes for an interesting collection. We enjoyed everything about this place. read more

Definitely recommend this. Looking at pictures online, the caverns looked cool, but nothing compares to the beauty of them in person. Definitely my favorite part of our week-long stay in Virginia. Our tour guide was great and shared lots of awesome information about the formation of the caverns and the different rooms we got to visit. It is a bit on the pricey side, but totally worth it for the awesome views. The hour-long tour was interesting and we got to take some great photos. Wear nice shoes because some parts are wet and a little slippery. The only reason I did four stars instead of five is due to the prices, but, again, it's still worth it for sure. read more

Cons: Highway noise, TINY, tiny campsites, mediocre bathrooms, campers so close we almost couldn't get our awning out, and mossy, old, campers that are probably permanent residents. Small yet beautiful. I have been to a few other caverns as well. This one isn't as large but it's still beautiful. Come prepared to climb or go down over 400 stairs. You'll get your steps in. The tour guide was friendly and gladly took pictures of us. We only had three people in our tour group so it was very intimate. We stayed in the camp ground and so were given a discount on the tour. read more

On a recent road trip through southern West Virginia, my boyfriend and I ended up in western Virginia in search of "a cool cave", and luckily we were able to fulfill our mission with Dixie Caverns. What makes Dixie Caverns one of those cool caves? (01) Dixie Caverns are inside of a mountain, which is not typical of your average cavern. (02) The group tour lasts one hour, so it's great if you're looking for an activity that won't occupy your whole afternoon. (03) It has all you'd expect from a cave: stalactites, stalagmites, a cathedral room, a giant bell-shaped formation, hibernating bats, and pools of water. I loved my recent visit to Dixie Caverns! The gift shop has some... quirky items in it but that just makes for a more interesting experience! We arrived around 12 PM for a tour, I believe they were getting ready to close for the day when we arrived but they didn't mention anything and told us that the last tour guide was finishing up his tour and it would be about 10 minutes before our tour started and we could look around the shop. They called over the intercom for us to meet the tour guide out front and I was surprised to find that it would just be the tour guide, myself, and my boyfriend on the tour! It was wonderful to have a personal tour guide of the caverns! Our tour guide, I wish I could remember his name, was very knowledgeable on the caverns and history. At the end of the tour, he turned off all of the lights and had us stand in the pitch black for about 30 seconds! It was SO amazing to be in the dark, in the cavern! To imagine what it must've been like when they first discovered it. I would highly recommend this tour. read more

Heather was an excellent guide with info and warnings to watch our heads and slippery steps. May be difficult for some as there are very steep steps up and down through the caverns. I have been to the Dixie Caverns multiple times. The staff is friendly, the caverns are nice and I like the story about how they were discovered. The wedding bell is one of the formations, I most enjoy. The tour has been a nice adventure for family and friends, who've come to visit me. Nasty day in the rain on I-81 and there's this old sign for DIxie Caverns standing way out in a farmer's field... Hey, why not? So we stopped and I'm totally glad we did. Our guide was very enthusiastic and endearing, which made this little attraction so much more enjoyable. The caverns are smaller than some other, more well-known, sites, but the things you see there are top-notch and the admission price is reasonable. The Caverns were very interesting, and the campground onsite was very pleasant!! We stayed here while passing through the area and stayed at the campground. It's small, but the sites are good, lots of trees, and full-hookups including cable! We toured the cavern while here, and found it very interesting. The guide was very knowledgeable and was very patient and pleasant to all of us, from old folks to several children who LOVED it! Even when they turned out all the lights! This cavern was discovered in 1920 by a couple of boys with a dog who were chasing a small animal. The dog actually fell into the original opening of the cave, luckily landing on a ledge just a couple feet inside. They rescued the dog and told the farmer about the cave. After exploring it for 3 years, he opened it to the public. Until the 1950s tours consisted of climbing down a rope from the original opening and crawling around in the different caves. Argh!! They then had to climb back UP the rope! Now, it's lighted, with brick walkways and handrails. The tour guide said there were 344 steps...which intimidated me a bit...but they are a few at a time and the longest stairs were only about 44 steps. Definitely do-able!! As other reviewers have said, it's not as large as some of the others, but the smaller caves can actually be better tours!! Just visiting the area and wanted to see some historical landmarks and stumbled upon this place. Looks very sketchy at first but they have a big gift shop to look at. As you go into the caverns be aware that it is extremely cold. I'm pretty tiny and had to wear two sweatshirts. The only problem that I noticed some people had were the stairs. Visited here with my family - myself, wife, and 4 kids. The tour of the caves cost us $42 for the 6 of us, and took about 50 minutes. The guide was good, allowing just enough time in each of the primary viewing areas of the caverns. It may not be the largest or "best" cave you could visit, but if you are in Salem/Roanoke, it's a great way to spend 2 hours. The gift shop is a total tourist trap, but prices are reasonable so you will not mind the experience. read more

It's a bit of a tourist trap. We ended up here because we needed a rest stop from our 14 hour drive. Located on the way to Richmond from Memphis, this is not the best example of caverns but most convenient. The 45 minute tour was rushed by a fast talking guide. My friend and I struggled to keep up as he ran through the sections leaving picture takers in the dust. That said it provided a break from the heat as I wore my fleece for the first time all month. If you're really a lover of caverns, Luray is suppose to be more impressive. read more
