The setting for Mountain Lake Lodge is very peaceful and restful. My wife and I had a great time relaxing in late April. We took several nearby hikes that were enjoyable, providing nice tree-filled views. The "gator tour" via the Outfitters was fantastic, driving around the property and learning the interesting history of the place. We had a wonderful time at Mountain Lake Lodge in Virginia. Our room was clean and spacious. It had some unexpected amenities like a fireplace and a box fan in the room, which I really appreciated. The staff went out of their way to be friendly and helpful. Christian, our waiter at the restaurant, was very nice and accommodating. The property itself is beautiful and historic. We booked a history tour by Gator and our guide, Beau, was knowledgeable and welcoming. I thought people were being harsh when I saw the complaints but we were very underwhelmed especially for nearly $400 dollars in the off season. This place is not handicapped friendly. We barely saw a soul besides the few workers. When we checked in the night manager was very kind and helpful getting us a few things that shared the dirty dance spots and scavenger hunt. My mom and I enjoyed talking about the spots. The room was very underwhelming, the door wasn't shut all the way when we went to it anyone could have been in and out of the room so that was really weird. The room seemed kinda run down. The bed frames were very wiggly and squeaky. With not having any activities or anything to do it would have been nice to have a tv. Everything was closed by or before 8pm. None of our phones were working great. We pretty much didn't have any service. They still had the Christmas lights on the building from winter. They were banging against the window the entire night. It was very loud and kept me awake almost all night. The next day it was raining and they were expecting snow that night. So not the best weather to explore. Again it was a new desk manager in the morning and he was very helpful and kind. Unfortunately they were working on the back driveway so the only way was to walk all the way around several buildings or to carry all of your stuff down the stair. Thank goodness for the front desk manager carrying several things for us. But this was massively frustrating not to be able to use that area or see the few spots from the movie. The resort has history and is very pretty but definitely isn't for everyone. We live far away and made a special trip so it was disappointing to say the least for the price especially. My spouse and I spent New Year's Eve at Mountain Lake, a place I have visited since childhood. While the cost felt high--$900 for one night for two couples sharing a room--we believed the experience would be worth it. Prior to our stay, I called to confirm event details and was told the dress code would be coat and tie for men and evening attire for women. We were also told there would be appetizers at the event. Unfortunately, neither of these representations was accurate. A portion of the $900 included a $100 dinner credit. Based on the information provided about heavy hors d'oeuvres at the event, we chose to skip dinner reservations and instead enjoyed light snacks in our room before the evening festivities. When we arrived at the "party," there was no food whatsoever, and the attire was extremely casual--jeans, tennis shoes, and everyday clothing. We were clearly overdressed and uncomfortable. There was only one bartender for more than 200 attendees, resulting in waits of over 20 minutes for a single drink. Due to the crowd, we decided to walk to the hotel bar for food and a beverage around 9:30 p.m. We were told very rudely by the sole bartender that the kitchen was closed, though she could make us a drink. With no other reasonable options, we returned to our room by 10:30 p.m. because the event was nothing like what had been advertised. The following morning, we attended the included breakfast. The hotel was sold out, yet only three waitstaff were working. We waited over 30 minutes for a table, and once seated, found the buffet completely empty. Guests were standing around waiting for food to be replenished. Before writing this review, I contacted the manager on duty the next day to share my disappointment and ask whether there were broader operational issues at the hotel. I also expressed concern that we were only given a $25 dinner credit instead of the guaranteed $100, despite being told beforehand that heavy hors d'oeuvres would be provided at the event. At no point were we informed that the $100 credit would only apply if we made dinner reservations. Ultimately, given the breakfast experience, we were relieved we hadn't eaten dinner on-site. The manager did credit us the remaining $75, which I appreciated and felt was fair. However, the reason I am writing this review is that the manager took my information and assured me the general manager would contact me within two days to address our concerns. I was told they understood the situation and would offer a discounted weekend stay to make things right, especially since we have been long-time guests. Three weeks later, I have not heard from anyone. This lack of follow-up is yet another disappointment, though unfortunately not a surprise given the experience as a whole. The single worst hotel experience in a decade. My wife was blinded by the Dirty Dancing tie in. No A/C, no tv, no elevator, parking lot is 200 yards from the hotel uphill. In addition to the long treacherous ride up and down the mountain! Come for the day and take pics at Babies cottage, and don't ever go back. Never, ever. A must stop!!!!! We were in Roanoke over New Years and wanted to see the mountains. I was reading up on a spot and came across this. I love exploring places that have been in movies so we made a trip up. This was hands down my favorite thing we did over the holiday break. I was 1 when the movie came out but I remember it is such a classic movie. I APPRECIATE the owners keeping everything just about the same as it was in the movie. They even have sign markers so you can access the nostalgic spots. We ate at the restaurant inside the main lodge and we went to the gift shop which was my favorite part. We recently stayed at Mountain Lake Lodge. We arrived on December 29 for 2 nights. The property is quite impressive. We had been looking for places that actually do some serious Christmas decorating. Many towns in southwest Virginia think that they are decorated with some Christmas flags and some lighted electric pole decorations. The lodge had a number of fir trees that were probably upwards of 70 feet fully decorated. The website notes that they decorate with 250,000 Christmas lights and it seems quite likely that was the case. There were various decorated displays on the property. The property inside was very decorated. We stayed in a Junior Suite. There were certainly positive things about the suite. The bath towels were of a larger size. The bed spread was quite decorative. The bathroom had a Jacuzzi with shower. There was a propane gas fireplace. The shower curtain should have been slightly longer. One had to be careful to avoid getting water on the floor. We noticed that paint on the door frame had chip/damage issues. There was a bench at the end of the bed. It could be pushed back and forth with very little pressure with one finger. That raises the question of the housekeeping. Did the housekeeper simply vacuum around and under it? Gently touching it with a vacuum would have resulted in the bench wobbling. We found a dead fly on one windowsill and some dead gnats on a different windowsill. The fireplace hearth area had broken and discolored tiles. The caulking between the tiles and fireplace stone was in very poor condition. We had dinner two nights, and breakfast one morning. The servers bring a glass container of water to each table after guests are seated. The water is filtered spring water and tastes much nicer than bottled or tap water. The first night the dinner was green paprika chicken with succotash. The dish was impressive in appearance. The Lima beans, crunchy, were not fully cooked. The chicken was moist, tender, and flavorful. The Mountain Lake Lodge website shows a breakfast menu. I had hoped to order from the menu. It was instead a buffet breakfast. I sampled various items. There were numerous choices, however the quality was what one might find in an inexpensive hotel/motel. It was truly unimpressive and very disappointing. We were told that they had a breakfast buffet because there were "well over a hundred guests in the Lodge." We did not, and this is only an observation, see a large number of people. Our second night dinner was disappointing. My wife ordered a hamburger medium and received a burger well done. The fries were under cooked. I ordered snapper which was done with Chile oil. I eat jalapeno peppers. The flavor of the fish was completely drowned by the spicy oil. Snapper is considered to be a mild, sweetly flavored fish. The bar is well stocked with various brands. It is comfortable but we noticed various imperfections. There was a chalk line where a chair rail had been placed. A small bubble level would have accomplished the task. We saw various paint splatters and other issues that perhaps many guests would not notice. It is perhaps likely that staff has become accustomed to various imperfections. People become accustomed to broken things for various reasons including familiarity. We recently stayed in a different hotel and met the manager of housekeeping. She was carrying a small computer pad and a legal pad. She inspected every room and wrote work orders on all imperfections. She was very aware that various small imperfections become familiar to staff. She understood that additional imperfections can easily be added to several small not readily noticed imperfections. It all becomes familiar and eventually results in a "tired looking" property. The staff is generally very proud of Mountain Lake Lodge. They are very focused on accommodating guests and insuring that guests have a very positive experience at their establishment. We found that the staff members were very friendly and very polite. We certainly do not have any negative comments in regard to the employees. We were told that there is planned renovation of the property. They will be using "local skilled people" who "feel a special connection" to the Lodge. We hope that this story results in superb craftsmanship. The movie Dirty Dancing was filmed primarily at two locations; one of those locations being Mountain Lake Lodge. The Lodge does have Dirty Dancing themed events and they have a shop in which there are various themed items available for purchase. That shop was very attractive and superbly maintained. read more

Disappointing Stay at Chestnut Lodge - Not Worth It New Years Eve : **We are only in this "room" because we were told no when I tried to cancel our reservations months ago, due to the lack of amenities and the hotel refusing to provide the GM's information. Our son has special needs and required some extra's - they don't provide. They asked instead of making a review, saying they don't naturally accommodate for special needs they would move us here so he could have a couple of the required extras. ** They have NO TV, AC, Fridge, Microwave in the Main lodge rooms. It is their policy to take one night regardless of how much time before the actual reservation. It does say it, but it is very tiny and its hidden. I'm currently at Chestnut Lodge with my family on New Year's Eve, and unfortunately, this experience has been far from the special getaway we envisioned. In fact, we're leaving a day early because the overall experience has been a letdown. Disorganized and Unwelcoming From the moment we arrived, it was clear that the hotel lacks basic hospitality standards. Check-in was chaotic, with no clear directions to our room or information about the advertised events. Maps were incomplete as in they don't show the whole property, and key details about activities were omitted. This lack of communication is Hospitality 101 and left us scrambling for answers throughout our stay. In fact, the lady who was running the store, said "God I just run the store, go ask someone else" as we were walking away to go get answers. Subpar Room Conditions Our room lacked basic comforts: just three large towels, flimsy pillows, (maybe 1 inch thick and only 4 total, also no attention to detail. When I requested additional pillows, they were delivered in a trash bag--hardly the standard of a $680 two-night stay. The internet was unsecured, painfully slow, and barely functional, at 1 MB which is frustrating given the complete lack of cell service in the area. Other guests were trying to pair to our tv -- the TV stopped working and the connection constantly fell off. Cleanliness was another issue, with visible stains near the fridge and an overall neglected feeling. Misleading Activities and Nickel-and-Diming The property's advertised activities were a disappointment. The "ice skating" was a tiny plastic rink with an additional $15 per person charge, which we weren't informed about at check-in. This nickel-and-dime approach felt tacky, especially for such a high room rate and portrayed image of resort vibes - Staff members gave conflicting information about activity times, making it even harder to plan. Dining Disasters Dinner was another frustrating experience. We weren't informed ahead of time about a limited New Year's menu, and the staff seemed overwhelmed. Requests for even a simple grilled cheese for our son were initially denied until a waitress stepped in. The to-go food we ordered was missing items and was of poor quality, think bad chain-restaurant level. At 5:30 the dining room was empty, and they refused to sit us - due to the reservations. NO ONE WAS IN THERE --- weird. Then they said we have bar food - and asked my son not to wait for the food in the area since it was a bar. The bar tenders were arguing about where their bottle openers were and who stole them - WHILE I was trying to put in an order on a limited menu at the bar - no wonder they forgot things. A Property with Wasted Potential This hotel has so much potential, but it's clear they are doing the bare minimum. They claim to preserve "historical charm," but the lack of investment and upkeep makes the property feel outdated and neglected. Staff were often rude or dismissive, and the overall atmosphere suggested a business more focused on squeezing money out of guests than delivering quality experience. Final Thoughts It's incredibly disappointing to see such a beautiful property fall so short. The lack of care, coordination, and investment is evident, and it's clear this lodge is not living up to its potential. I hope management takes these issues seriously because right now, this place is simply not worth the cost or effort. read more

We just went for the Dirty Dancing theme weekend! It was an incredible experience and I felt like I was back in time in the movie. Loved seeing all the spots they filmed -- especially Baby's cabin! The entire weekend is well done. We stayed in one of the Blueberry Ridge cabins. Definitely rent a golf cart well in advance! It was much needed and we loved cruising around in it. Very disappointing stay at Mountain Lake Lodge. We booked a weekend anniversary trip and were looking forward to our stay. When we arrived, it was an unseasonal 91 degrees and we were shocked to find out the rooms do not have air conditioning in the lodge. There was a box fan in the closet that was cheap and loud. No elevators and no one to help older guests haul their bags up the large main staircase. There was no soda/water vending machine on our floor and no mini fridge in our room. We had reservations for dinner at the Harvest restaurant our first night there and were seated promptly at 7pm. However, at 7:35, my husband had to go to the host and ask if we were forgotten. No waitress had acknowledged us while two other servers had passed our table several times. The manager came to our table immediately and took over our service herself. We were comped an appetizer. The next morning we had breakfast reservations in the same place and instead of the a la carte breakfast menu on display in front of the restaurant, they had opted for a buffet breakfast since the lodge was so booked. It was very disappointing. There were three different kinds of eggs.- Hard boiled, scrambled, and scrambled with cheese. It reminded me of a Shoney's breakfast buffet. We stopped by the cafe for sodas before we headed out to walk the grounds and the diet coke I purchased for $2.65 for a bottle had an expiration date of June 2025 which I did not see until we were further down the road. We ate at the bar that night and there was only one bartender handling the drinks and the food for both her area and the Harvest restaurant. Luckily we were not in a hurry and enjoyed our time there. There was a wedding at the site that day and a home football game for Virginia Tech so that evening several guests had a make shift party at the fire pit. It was loud and drunken and due to no air conditioning, every room had open windows and could not escape the noise. There was very little sleeping that evening. Our last morning we went back to Harvest for breakfast and the buffet was in place again. The exact same offerings, no changes. Again, very disappointing. We checked out of our room and when we got back to our home 5 hours away, we realized that someone had charged $60 worth of drinks to our room. My husband called the Lodge to set the matter straight. We told them we closed our tab every evening and did not charge things to the room. They said they would have to investigate and get back to us. A few hours later we were issued a refund. On the plus side, the staff we did see were mostly very polite and helpful. That's the plus side. The Lodge is woefully understaffed, the food was good but overpriced and the lack of air conditioning should be noted on the website. Sleeping with an open window and a box fan over a makeshift frat party going until the wee hours was not how we imagined our anniversary. It feels like they are complacent, just using the Dirty Dancing fans to keep it alive. There is room for great improvement, but I don't believe we will ever be back to see it. read more

Front desk tries to act surprised and says maintenance can look at it tomorrow, but they also say it is because the hotel is fully booked. I came here to have the time of my life! We happened to be be staying in the Virginia Mountains for a week and I saw that "Kellerman's" was only 1 hour away. As a young child of the 1980s, I HAD to see where one of my favorite movies was filmed. Dirty Dancing was not actually filmed in the Catskills, it was filmed about 30 mins from Virigina Tech! I'm from Upstate New York and I have to say the drive to here did feel reminiscent of driving the Thruway through the Catskill Mountains. We arrived around noon midweek in September, the place was dead quiet. We parked in the main lodge lot, but there is day visitor parking right before you approach this building. I imagine if it's a busy weekend, you'd want to use the visitor lot. It was a bit surreal to be here. We lived in Los Angeles for a while, so I got to attend various show tapings, of course everything always looks smaller in person vs on TV. Same for here! I love that Mountain Lake Lodge has various plaques on the grounds that describe each Dirty Dancing scene that was filmed there. I popped in to quickly check out the main lodge, a bit dilapidated. I was glad to find a restroom on the first floor (basement) level. It was dead quiet during my visit, so I popped into the dining room as well. If Covid wasn't going on, I would have loved to eat in there and soak up the vibes of the Houseman family. It's cool there is a plaque above the table that the family dined at in the flick. I looked in the gift shop. They have merchandise for the actual hotel and an additional room with Dirty Dancing/Kellerman's gear. I didn't end up buying anything, I thought the items were a tad overpriced. I wish they had a few lower priced items, like maybe a sticker or magnet. I think the DD coffee mug was about $19.99. The grounds have obviously changed since the movie, two pools were added and maybe some extra cabins. Most disappointing is the fact that the lake is now empty! Otherwise, it was really fun to soak up some silver screen nostalgia. The final dance and staff cabin scenes were filmed in Lake Lure, NC. Sadly, those buildings are now gone. It looks like a teeny bit of the lake is coming back, if it ever fills in I'm coming back to stay. Maybe I'll even rent Baby's cabin. ;-) read more

Had a visit from AZ this afternoon and perused Kellermans gift shop to take a look at some souvenirs. Unfortunately, there was some poorly placed merchandise set up in the back portion of the shop and a free standing book fell over and broke a glass ornament. I proceeded to be respectful and inform Angelina the employee working the gift shop whom responded very sternly and rudely "yes, I heard it" I then apologized and explained the book fell over and she charged me $27 dollars for the broken merchandise!!!!!!!! I am highly displeased with her demeanor and the fact that she charged me after I politely informed her of the situation. What a disappointing ending to such a lovely afternoon. read more

I attended one of the Dirty Dancing weekends and felt like I stepped onto a movie set.You can stay in the main lodge or cabins including Baby's cabin from the movie.I stayed in the Dorland cabin 355, it was a clean room ,spacious and had a porch.The many dining restaurant is Harvest and you can even sit at the Housmans Table which I was lucky enough to sit at a few times.There are two pools and a hot tub.They have many markers on the grounds to show you where scenes from the movie were filmed which is really cool.During the Dirty Dancing weekends the movie is shown a few times and there's even a costume contest. There's trails to hike and a mountain tour you can take for a nominal fee.Had a wonderful weekend and can't wait to come back. read more

Horrible experience deserves a ZERO star, no welcome when we checked in, room was FILTHY bathroom had mold, air vent hadn't been cleaned in who knows how long. After setting luggage down after a 7 hour drive we went to the restaurant on site to be told we needed reservations not mentioned at time of booking. Then we decided to try and make the best of it and go for a walk through their Christmas village, well that was a joke for the price, ordered apple cider to be served dollar general apple juice at best, ended up at the local Walmart for food, next day thought well they have a train ride and carriage rides only to find out train was broke for the rest of the season and wanted additional $75 dollars and this is ON TOP of the $1,000 charged for a room that was FAR from a nice "lodge" experience oh and the carriage ride was a whole 6 minutes so we opted not to get ripped off any further. Now time to just leave as I was NOT sleeping in that nasty room one more night, no thank you for staying just informing us no refund for remainder of booking, MOTEL 6 would have been a much better option. We read reviews after the fact of course that was stupid on my part, however upon reading came across one about a stain on the bedspread and wouldn't you know we found the stain ,now I'm not sure if it was the same room or not but found a stain regardless, We did take several pics of the awful conditions at the very least needs a DEEP clean and some washed bedding this is the very least they could do. I'm torn on my review for the Mountain Lake Lodge. Maybe I expected more. It is in a great location. There are tons of outdoor things to do. The property is very nice (outside). If you like Dirty Dancing, you'll recognize many of the buildings. We stayed in one of the cabins. I arrived late on Friday night (9:30pm). It was warm and musty inside the room (no AC). I could hear everything around us. The group of people next door were up until midnight outside talking. That's not the fault of the property, I get it. The room itself was decorated in vintage 1980s garage sale. Nothing matched, so they weren't going for a specific theme. I did get the opportunity to get to know my wife a little better - the bed sank right into the middle. There was a small TV mounted on the wall. WiFi was not so great. We asked for a pet-friendly room. We were told there were no more available. Strange, the rooms on either side of us had pets - large dogs - in them. Large, loud dogs. I'm an early riser, so I went to the lobby to grab a cup of coffee. The front desk attendant was snoozing in the back office. No coffee to be found until the little shop opened at 7:00am. That's when I saw the guy walking around barefooted. Blah! Nasty. It was worse when he settled in on the sofa and propped his feet up on the coffee table. Once again, I get it, not the fault of the property. This place could be so much more! Update the rooms. Add AC. Have a little attention to detail. Clean the grounds regularly. Have coffee in the lobby. It's the small things that launch a place like this to the level of exceptional. read more

A chilly April afternoon - while visiting we took the beautiful drive up to the lodge for lunch. The restaurant was empty, but beautiful! The young man who seated us was our waiter, very polite with a soft southern accent! We ordered the grilled pimento cheese sandwich with a cup of soup. The lunch was so delicious - the sandwich was perfectly grilled, even the cut edge was grilled! We will come back while visiting again. The property was quiet, don't know how many guests were there. HOME OF DIRTY DANCING!!! When we embarked on our weekend getaway to Virginia, we really only had one thing in mind. Finding a location midway between Akron & Atlanta to meet up with friends. COVID-19 has drawn out different levels of concern for different people that basically boils down to a traffic light. RED LIGHT people are sheltering in place above and beyond local recommendations opting to limit exposure to others to the maximum of their ability, while GREEN LIGHT people are almost exactly the opposite. I fall into the YELLOW LIGHT category where I do not desire to shelter with little to no contact, but also do not want to take excessive risks by gathering in largely crowded areas. So I limit public exposure to mostly outside, mildly populated situations. Visits to the beach or even returning to church are not currently on our agenda. Our initial plans were to spend time with friends in a well sanitized weekend cabin, but discovered quite a few interesting things to do in the area; from waterfalls and covered bridges, to disappearing creeks, famous TV shows like Black Dog Salvage & movie filming locations such as Dirty Dancing. ~ THE EXPERIENCE MOUNTAIN LAKE LODGE has created a walking tour of notable filming moments all around the property. 10 locations have monument signs with a picture of the actual scene filmed there. One of the most famous scenes was when Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey practiced "The Lift" in the lake near the lodge. A cinder block in a grassy field shows just how much the lake has receded since the filming of the movie. Patrick Swayze stood on top of the cinder block for the lift scene. Back then he was waist deep in water. The lodge says the cinder block has never been moved, and it is clearly more than 100 yards from the current lake water level. Another notable filming location was Baby's Cabin. Unfortunately we were not able to tour it because someone was currently occupying it. However, one easy difference to spot was the position of the stairs to the cabin had been moved since filming. The grounds were nicely manicured and the atmosphere was relaxing as people played by the pool, picnicked and sat on the lower deck of the lodge catching views of the many hummingbirds busily feeding. The only downside is the road to the lodge is rather long with scary drop offs as you climb the mountain. ~ FINAL THOUGHTS All in all it is an interesting 'something to do' when in the area, especially for movie lovers. We did not stay at the lodge or eat at the restaurant on site, but did walk a good portion of the property using the self guided tour map provided by the check-in desk. The Harvest Restaurant is a beautiful stone restaurant w great views of the resort. Not many people so no real problem w social distancing here in Mid November. Waitress and crew wear masks and sanitizers accessible. I had biscuits and gravy, the biscuits were fresh and soft, home fries w a mix of sweet potatoes and regular potatoes, Applewood bacon and a pancake. Very good but my meal got cold quickly as we were seated on the enclosed porch so l would ask to sit in the inside area next time. Come and check out the resort where many scenes from the movie Dirty Dancing were filmed. Stayed here for one of the Dirty Dancing weekends and felt like I was magically transported back into the movie.There is the main lodge plus many cabins for your stay including Baby's cabin .I stayed in the Dorland cabin room 355, it was a nice size room , very clean with a nice porch to go sit out on.There is a bar plus the restaurant called Harvest serving delicious food. They have two pools plus a hot tub.There are many trails to hike plus a mountain tour you can book for an additional fee.The Dirty Dancing weekends are amazing they have costume contests , they play the movie multiple times through out the weekend and you get to meet the nicest people from all over.Our highlight was getting to dine at the Housmans Table in Harvest a few times that weekend.There is so much to see from the movie with stations marked depicting certain movie scenes, this was so much fun and I can't wait to return, plus I even carried a Watermelon. read more

For every Dirty Dancing lover, this is a bucket list item. Take a stroll through the resort for sites of the movie that you will remember. For me, this resort ended up being more than a movie. The cabin was warm and inviting with a small porch overlooking the main lawn with rocking chairs. The trails, the absolute beauty of the outdoors, the fresh air...just incredible. Had a great night at this rustic hotel resort. We did not stay in any of the cabins and had a room in the main house. Everything was clean and in working order. It's an older hotel so don't expect an updated room with crazy technology. It's a rustic hotel in the woods with everything you need to have fun and stay comfortable. The grounds were nice and they had different signs throughout the hotel to identify the different Dirty Dancing landmarks. Yes, the pond is dried up and has been for a very long time. So don't cry about it if you show up looking to do The Lift. They did add great outdoor play areas and pools so guests can swim. The hotel is surrounded by trees which are very nice in the fall and they also have some hiking trails and other sign up activities. Overall, this is a great place for a night or weekend away. Expect to pay a little more because of the history, Dirty Dancing following and location. We ate dinner and breakfast at the hotel and the food did exceed expectations. Also had a drink in the bar area and watched some football and listened to music. The staff was very nice. A lot of these low star Yelp reviews are ridiculous. People will complaining about anything especially during the Covid Era. This is an old hotel in a lovey setting. Worth a visit! read more

What a wonderful place. We stayed in one of the cabins for 5 nights. The staff really makes you feel special. The food and drinks where terrific. You really can't beat the whole atmosphere. Lots of outdoor activities including hiking trails, a rope course, skeet shooting and a brand new second pool. I think the problem with this place is they can't keep employees. Every 3-4 weeks they advertise on Indeed for housekeeping employees, restaurant servers, bartenders plus other positions even a manager. Seems they offer good salary so it must be how they treat their employees or either poor management possibly both. It is extremely dirty and employees seems overworked and tired. read more

I had to make a stop at the "Dirty Dancing hotel" on my 40th birthday road trip, because I grew up in the 80's and have watched the movie a million times. I loved it-so nostalgic! This place has lots of history and the setting is lovely, especially in the fall with the changing colors. The food was better than I was expecting (my first ever bison burger was delish!) and the staff was nice. There were minor cleaning issues that might need to be addressed (some mildew in grout lines) but overall, it was rustic and fun and we had a great stay. My friends are so jealous read more

The hotel itself was very beautiful. The scenery was breath taking and the many activities available gives you something to do all day. The hotel caters to more nature lovers, don't expect a fancy up to date hotel with modern accommodations since it's basically built for you to enjoy the rustic outdoors. I gave it the 4 star because I do understand the authentic rooms that should not excuse the dust in the room and the bugs in the light (reference the pictures). We decided to do breakfast at the Harvest restaurant and there was a sign that said "Please wait here to be seated". We patiently waited along with another couple and the only 3 staff saw us waiting did not acknowledge us until about 15 minutes later, this was after we had stepped into the dining room to see if we could flag someone down. Lodging: Gorgeous old hotel. Unfortunately needs a lot of updating. Flooring, windows...all look quite aged. The pillows were stained and solid blocks of fiber of some sort. The rooms have no TV which we liked, but they should probably say that somewhere (last time I was there was 20+ years ago and we stayed in a cabin, not in the lodge). Internet was fine for streaming. Big focus on the fact Dirty Dancing was filmed there. Almost too much, but seeing that they were actually filming another Dirty Dancing themed show while we were there I guess it's something they hope will still bring in guests. No issue with that-I'm just not sure DD excites anymore. A storied history and beautiful property though-I can totally see this having been the upscale stay 40 years ago. Food: we paid for two breakfasts and a lunch ("by the pool") up front. Breakfast was a solid choice. Buffet style, the servers were friendly and the food, mostly prepackaged heated items, some eggs, fruits, pastries was good. Lunch on the other hand was another story. "Lunch by the pool" was abysmal. Honestly I was downright angry about it, as they didn't satisfy even two little kids. The choices for lunch were hot dog or nachos. We ordered 3 paltry hot dogs and one order of nachos-which were served only with a salty cheese sauce and they didn't even have an optional salsa, chili or anything else to offer. No sides (there were some bagged chips available), no fruit, nothing else. Hot dogs were lukewarm and came with a stale split bread bun and a mustard and ketchup packet. Bah. I would be embarrassed serving that if I was a manager of any kind. That isn't even something they would serve at a Best Western much less somewhere charging $300/night. Blacksburg for dinner. Activities: we did a lot of stuff in two days! We loved our full history gator tour and recommend it. A bit expensive at $149 BUT definitely give a handsome tip to the guy who took us, who was a retired teacher and it showed. Two plus hours later we felt we saw every cool view and heard every great story ML had to offer. Two thumbs up. We spent time at the pools (there are two) and hot tub. Great build out, clean and nice. When we were here 20+ years ago there was no pool but instead there was a huge lake which apparently disappears for awhile every 200 years or so. I am kind of obsessed with this fact-you can hike around at what was the bottom of the lake, and it should be back in a few decades. The only lake of its kind on earth! Neat-o! We did the treetops courses ($45/adult $22/child) as well which included a zip line and a bunch of climbing. Kids loved it and our guide Brian was great. Again tip the staff out well, they really made the difference in our stay. We were unable to go to the barn which I loved last time because of filming. That was a big disappointment and not advertised. Overall: our kids want to come back again, so it was a win. I'd say for the total of about $1000 for a weekend, this was a relatively expensive little getaway, but a good place to make memories. They also have cabins which you can stuff a bunch of family in, bring food and beverages and make this a bit more cost effective. Mediocre Mountain Experience I hope this helps someone decide. I had already booked my stay and couldn't get out of it so it was a done deal to come. I read some of the reviews so I was forewarned but hoped that management had paid attention to the feedback, sadly not so much. The Food: Very overpriced for the quality! First night, we had the Crab Cake appetizer, Spinach Artichoke dip, New York Strip steaks, Brussel Sprouts with Bacon, and Peanut butter pie. I normally am not picky about my meat but for around $50 each, totally a rip off. The steak was chewy and the seasoning was gross. My dog wouldn't even eat it, seriously. The Brussel sprouts were soggy. The Spinach artichoke dip was more like a pesto with very greasy fried pita bread. The only redeeming thing we ate was the crab cake appetizer and peanut butter pie. For lunch, we tried the Philly Cheesesteak, Loaded Potato chips, burger, and chicken wings. Philly Cheesesteak and burger were mediocre - not bad but not good. It was redeemed by the loaded potato chips and chicken wings. For dinner, we tried the Venison Stroganoff, Braised short rib and two Caesar salads. The good: Braised short rib was huge and a win along with the Caesar Salads. The bad: The Venison Stroganoff was terrible. Worst meal I had and for $22, no! The meat was very chewy. I've eaten venison many times but this was not prepared well. The Hotel: We stayed in the Chestnut lodge for $375ish per night plus a $75 pet fee. Hotel price for motel quality. The good: Bathroom had been redone at some point. The Chestnut Lodge comes with tv and a mini kitchen (fridge, microwave and coffee maker). The bad: Mattress was less than stellar and the pillows needed replacing. We tried the pullout bedding in order to watch a movie. Wrong! The mattress was so dated that you felt the springs straight away. We opted to put it back together and sit on the couch. You will see peeling paint all over. Might have been the rustic cabin look but again hotel price for motel quality. The Staff: Management needs to plan for more staff when they have more guests. Because we had a dog, we ordered take away for dinner from the Harvest restaurant. The first time, I called twice to The Harvest restaurant and no one ever answered. Because the restaurant closes at 9pm and I wanted to get our order in at 8pm, I called the Front Desk and the clerk said he would leave the Harvest restaurant a message to call me. They did call me within 10 minutes so that was good. The next night, again I called and no one ever answered so again I called the front desk. This time I got a female clerk and I explained that I needed her to leave them a message to call me. She said "I can't leave them a message." BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE WHEN YOU BASICALLY TELL A CUSTOMER THAT THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO FOR YOU! I told her, the previous night's clerk did it. She begrudgingly agreed to leave a message. Because the return call was longer, I just walked up and put in the order myself. There are other reviews about bad service so if they want to stay open, this better be addressed. For those coming for Dirty Dancing theme, just be forewarned that the lake is dried up. I will say that the lodge is beautiful from the outside and the grounds do have the gazebo where the the dancing lessons occurred and the boat launch but both overlook weeds and brush where the lake once was. P.S. Bring your own firewood otherwise they will charge you $25 for more wood. read more

This place was amazing. Yes the lake is dried up, but it's still beautiful in a new way. I saw a deer bedding down for the night in the "lake" during a sunset walk, and was greeted by peeper frogs and fireflies as I walked back to the lodge for the night. Service is friendly and knowledgeable, management is very observant and attentive. We enjoyed a lovely dinner and a scrumptious breakfast.
