It's a lodge in the middle of a state park. According to signs, construction started in the 1960s and opened in 1970. It's almost like a 50 year old time capsule. Please don't go in expecting a 4 start hotel. The rooms are small and very simple. There's a restaurant on one side and a snack place kind of in the middle that serves food like chicken wings. The views are great. You have to catch a sunset on their deck. The staff is friendly. Theres also some hiking trails nearby.

Pipestem, named for plants that resemble pipe-stems, has an almost retro feel, like taking a step into what a vacation in the 70's may have been like. There are two lodges, one only accessible by Air Tram, a few restaurants, a golf course, trails, an observation tower, and... an adventure park! There's also a spa, which I don't think I've seen at any other state park yet! This must be quite a sight to see during peak season, but I showed up in a quieter time two weeks after Labor Day, which was lovely in its own right. The Air Tram was just reopened this year, and the cars are new and improved! The ride isn't terribly long, and you take a scenic ride to the river. There are a couple trails down at the base, and several folks were fishing. The gift shops are well stocked, the restaurant had decent food and a rather nice view!

So surprising that I grew up in WV but never made it to Pipestem. My husband and I had a nice parents only weekend while here for our friend's wedding. Accommodations and food at the main lodge could definitely use some upgrading but they have a secondary lodge we didn't get to see due to construction, cabins, and camping also as options. We really enjoyed the scenery in this area of the state, the abundance of activities available for all ages, and getting to learn about the area during a special event they had one night for a strawberry moon hike. I'd definitely come back here!

Dead bugs in floor of our room

Warning: DO NOT STAY HERE!!! Upon check in, there were dead bugs everywhere. The floor was extremely dirty. Dirty towel and trash hadn't been emptied. Really disgusting place. Can hear EVERY step in the room above us and continues until late at night. Dangerous mold on ceiling. Extremely disappointing for $200/night

We only stayed one night, but it was a great place to stay. The staff was so nice. The rooms were nice, clean, and comfortable. There was a pool, game room and nice outdoor area. The restaurant inside had a great breakfast buffet. When I come back to West Virginia I will definitely be staying here.

Jeremy & Tori (a.k.a. AWESOME zip line guides)

Jeremy and Tori were not only fun, they were extremely thorough, safety conscious and considerate of everyone's needs. Check, check and check. All questions answered, every step explained well, no rushing. 10/10 would recommend these two as your next guides. The ONLY recommendation we would have for Pipestem Adventures would be possibly walking trail (to and in between the landings) improvements (maybe a little wider cut or better prepped). They were navigational but would help some of us less agile individuals to feel even safer.

A beautiful state Park located just down the road from Athens WVa in Summers County. The park is a 4000 acre park with all the wonderful fun things you would ever want to do. Horseback riding, camping, fishing, swimming, Hicking, golf, and walking trails all there to enjoy. A tram ride to the bottom of the Bluestone River Gorge will be one of many fun things to do. There's a hotel lodge with many rooms with spectacular views of the blue ridge mountains. There's cottage rentals as well for more private camping. There are also camping sites if outdoors camping is your thing. An outdoor amphitheater to enjoy and swimming in the rivers are just a few of the many activities available. It's truly an amazing park just 3 1/2 hours from Charlotte. The food in the dining room at the hotel is delicious. We absolutely loved our visit to the park and plan to go back soon. Two thumbs way up!

Wonderful, back to nature experience here! We stayed at the Mountain Creek Lodge (which requires a tram to get to/from the main park/lodge). Peaceful, quite and there is a great restaurant located here. The rooms are a bit dated but very clean and All room have a small refrigerator and microwave. The grounds also have picnic tables and grills. The only reason not to give it five stars is the following: 1) The Mountain Creak restaurant is only open for dinner, so you won't be able to get breakfast or lunch here- you will need to go up to the main lodge. 2) When we were here the tram started running at 8am, -this may be due to short staffing and Covid as it seems the regular start time is 6am (so any early risers who want to go up to the main lodge for breakfast- you will need to wait til 8am). Overall a great time here if you want a quite, back to nature experience!

Stayed here for a professional conference. It's unseasonably warm - 75° in February - and our room was on the top floor. When we got to our room, it was very hot and stuffy, and the thermostat in our room didn't seem to be working. So we went to the front desk to see if someone could check it out, and we were told that they are "on a boiler system" and "weren't on A/C mode yet". When we asked how we could cool the room, we were told to open the window and that they would bring us some fans. That was fine(ish) during the day, mostly because we weren't in the room much during the day, but unfortunately, our room also overlooked the parking lot and a workout room. So our options were to (a) have our window open with zero privacy and bright parking lot lights shining into our room all night or (b) roast. Needless to say, it's been a super uncomfortable stay. In fact, I'm writing this at 3 am because I can't sleep due to how hot it is in the room (even with a fan in the window, which means there are also bright lights shining into our room ). Luckily, we only have to stay one night. I will say that the front desk staff are very friendly and tried to help as much as possible with limited resources. But... whoever owns the place needs to consider an update to a more modern heating/cooling system because THIS SUCKS. Edit to add: There was no hot water for showers the next morning.

Such a memorable experience! My family & I went zip lining about the last week of October. We got the most incredible views of the leaves changing. Our guides were incredible, Olivia & Bryan. Definitely recommend.

This is active mold on the ceiling of our room

I've rented a hotel room at Pipestem several times since the spring. The very first week I rented, I happened to get a very freshly remodeled room overlooking the gorge on the 7th floor. Between the fabulous room, the great restaurant, and the feel of the lodge, I would have given it 6 stars on a scale of 1-5. Then the next week I stayed, I was over on the sixth floor on the side. Half the bathroom lights were burned out, the flourescent light around the mirror was half lit and buzzing, and the carpet was all stained like a one star hotel. So I was disappointed, but the restaurant is great, and I had a great hike to the river and back, and I love sitting on the deck at sunset. Then the last time I stayed there a couple of weeks ago, we were in a "pet friendly" room. As soon as we entered the room, it really stank. What we found was, not only was the toilet literally leaking yellow foul water all around the base from a broken wax seal, but then at night when the curtains were drawn, we looked up and literally counted SEVENTY active mold spots on the wooden ceiling. Thats right; SEVENTY. I was disappointed to say the least. But I knew they were sold out and with a small dog on a Saturday evening, I wasn't about to start driving the countryside, looking for an available hotel room that accepted pets. So we lived with that disgusting filth. And the room felt extremely damp. This was the second floor on the side. This was literally the worst hotel experience I've ever had since I've stayed at hotels in about 45 years. The ONLY reason I give it 2 stars instead of one is because of the view and the restaurant, the lake and the trails.

Sunset from the room

Amazing place to visit. The staff is awesome, The views are so beautiful. Horseback riding and zip lining is a must. This is one of my favorite places to go. I can't wait to go back ....soon

I want to preface this review by saying that we did not stay overnight in a room at The Greenbrier,…read morebut we did spend most of the day there, and I'm glad we did. When you pull in, you will be greeted by security at the front gate. We advised them we were there for the bunker tour and to do some shopping and they gave us a parking pass and directions to the best place to park. The resort is iconic, huge and pristine. We walked our dog around the grounds and up to the main building. Unfortunately, even though they say that the resort is dog friendly, there are some areas where dogs are not allowed. So I waited outside while my husband spoke to someone at the front desk about reserving a spot for the bunker tour. When he returned, I went inside while he stayed out front with our pup. When you walk in the decor hits you all at once and, if you are a Fallout fan like I am, everything just feels so familiar and comfortable. The bold, eccentric colors and patterns, the chandeliers and unique furniture... It's all there. I wandered through the shops which are upscale and fun to browse, even if you're just looking. I bought some giant macarons which were priced incredibly reasonably and really enjoyed them. All of the staff I encountered were friendly and helpful, and even without reservations, we were able to get tickets to the bunker tour. Be advised that they made it very clear to us that getting tickets "day of" is not the standard experience, so I do recommend reserving tickets if you want to do the tour. The vault tour itself is probably closer to four stars, but it's definitely a must. Knowing there was a fully built secret congressional bunker hidden underneath this glamorous resort for decades is wild. You walk through the old dorm rooms and meeting areas and see how it was all set up so long ago. You're not allowed to take any photographs, but I did read some basic information before coming. Still, reading about it and seeing it are two totally different things. It cost well over $100 for the two of us to do the tour and that is before tip so it definitely isn't cheap. It would have also been nice to have more seating, especially for things like watching the video, etc. My feet hurt a little after the tour from standing so long on the hard concrete floors of the bunker. The only reason that we did not end up spending the night is that we really wanted to be inside some of the main buildings and although they do offer dog friendly accommodations, they are only located within certain cottages kind of on the edges or outskirts of the property. There is also a $250 fee for dogs so we decided at the time that it would not be worth it for us, however, full disclosure: we regret that decision. We definitely should have spent the night. It was a once in a lifetime experience for me and if I ever get the chance to come back here I will definitely get a room and stay as long as I can, soaking up the ambiance and anemoia.

They should give you a golf cart if they put you we are in the cottages or the Valleyview estate…read more Twice are room key did not work and we had to goof it 15 minutes back to the main building to get a new one. Yes I know the decor is supposed to be iconic, but it's just so outdated. It's not really that fun. The view is something to look at though! Love the mountains. They've got some nice activities and the fitness area is pretty decent with weights and machines. Falconry was an interesting excursion but the pricing is kinda crazy. The restaurants were all pretty good on the quality side but service was painfully slow for most. The breakfast buffet though is epic!

Being off the beaten path, it's easy to forget about life in the "real world." It was so quiet and peaceful; you only hear the sounds and see the sights of nature that have been lost in far too many places. I stayed in the Farmhouse Inn, the main house of the resort. It was clean, tastefully designed and well-furnished. I was the only one staying in this space, so again, it was very quiet. I spent a few hours outside in the evening chatting with a few other guests who were staying on the grounds. We sat out on the patio area during this time, and even decided to have our dinner there, as the weather was beautiful. While we ate, several deer payed a visit to the grounds to get dinner for themselves. Speaking of dinner, it was fantastic. I had a fresh salad, that I can only assume came from the organic garden on the grounds. Additionally, I had a vegetable lasagna and finished my meal with some delicious apple cake. Since I was leaving early the next morning for work, a breakfast basket was prepared for me with a variety of baked goods, orange juice, fruit, and a serving of the best baked oatmeal I ever had. Gail and Gary, the owners, were fantastic as well. They were extremely helpful from booking through my checkout. There were several emails sent to me prior to my visit with all the directions and information I needed to know for my arrival. Since I was arriving during their off hours, they prepared a binder for me that got me to my room and settled in until we had a chance to meet later in the evening. If you are interested in connecting with the outside world during your stay, cell service is spotty. I was told that only some cell service work there. However, there is a public phone that anyone can access if needed at no cost. In addition, the Farmhouse Inn has wifi. I don't believe this is true for all the outer houses. But since you come by the Farmhouse for meals, and any other time you want to, it shouldn't be an inconvenience. Overall, I have absolutely no complaints. I would HIGHLY reccomend this place if you're in the area.

We barely saw a soul besides the few workers. When we checked in the night manager was very kind and helpful getting us a few things that shared the dirty dance spots and scavenger hunt. My mom and I enjoyed talking about the spots. The room was very underwhelming, the door wasn't shut all the way when we went to it anyone could have been in and out of the room so that was really weird. The room seemed kinda run down. The bed frames were very wiggly and squeaky. With not having any activities or anything to do it would have been nice to have a tv. Everything was closed by or before 8pm. None of our phones were working great. We pretty much didn't have any service. They still had the Christmas lights on the building from winter. They were banging against the window the entire night. It was very loud and kept me awake almost all night. The next day it was raining and they were expecting snow that night. So not the best weather to explore. Again it was a new desk manager in the morning and he was very helpful and kind. Unfortunately they were working on the back driveway so the only way was to walk all the way around several buildings or to carry all of your stuff down the stair. Thank goodness for the front desk manager carrying several things for us. But this was massively frustrating not to be able to use that area or see the few spots from the movie. The resort has history and is very pretty but definitely isn't for everyone. We live far away and made a special trip so it was disappointing to say the least for the price especially. To be able to share the experience with my mom is what I will cherish. But I wouldn't go or stay again.

There is a shuttle that will drive you from the lot to the lodge but it fills up real quick. Once you get your pass you just walk out the door to the hill for tubing. The hill has eight to ten runs (a few were down bc the snow was melting). You will have to find a tube at the bottom or ask the staff for more. There is a lift to the top of the hill but the top was a little chaotic bc there was no staff up there keeping order and people will cut in or hold a lane. The run is pretty fast and it is a fun run down the hill. We were able to go 20-30 times in a three hour window with a break for a snack. Once we did, the valets quickly took care of us, and we were checked in. Our room on the second floor overlooked the 18th green and a valley on the backside of the lodge. It was terrific: large and spacious, with lots of wood and chunky lodge-style furnishings. The bathroom was huge, with a large tub, separate shower, and his-and-hers sinks. The minibar came stocked with complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and some snacks. While staying here, we enjoyed their astronomy presentation at the top of the silo, walking on several trails through the nearby woods, time in the spa, and making smores out back by the fire pit in the evening with the other guests. There was a special cocktail hour with apps and drinks, and a chance to talk to some of the local providers of food and items to the hotel. They do an excellent job of using local sources for the lodge. Dining was top notch, except at the Stables family-style restaurant. The Stables was a disappointment. Our other meals though in the lodge were top notch. The staff at Primland is the best, and they are what make this place so special.
