We knew we would run out of cell service so quickly found Sally and Scott's B&B. It worked out that they had the honeymoon suite available that had its own separate french doors and own bath. Sally had pictures up of her mother in her wedding gown and also some old wedding gowns from brides past. There is a common area downstairs that has a dining room table, fridge, sink, couches and also a library of their personal collection. For breakfast we walked upstairs where we were greeting by the dogs- so friendly and the rest of the people staying there. Breakfast was probably the best ive had in years, bacon, sausage links, jam filled muffins, hash brown casserole, scrambled eggs, spinach quiche, biscuits, coffee and OJ. Both of the owners work at or for chateau morrisette which is a lovely vineyard down the parkway. The decor, people and location really made our anniversary special this year and all of it was unplanned which was the best part! Not only do they have rooms in the home but they also have a couple of rustic cabins that you can stay at on the property with a little more privacy if you wanted it.

They really bent over backwards to accommodate us when my daughter's wedding party utilized the cottage to get ready for the ceremony. Can't say enough about this place. Arriving we didn't see any signs to the Inn so it was a little confusing and weird driving up to the Inn. We were welcomed inside by Keri and she apologized for the confusion and said they were working on signage. Keri was fantastic and first thing she did was show us to our room and took us on a little tour of the place. She gave us a lot of insight onto the house and its previous owners and how old it is. There is so much character and each room and the way they have each of them setup brings our the personality of each room. We were staying in the Wanderlust room and it was a beautiful with a great view of the open grounds next to the estate. It really felt as if we were staying a close friends house for the weekend. Keri kept us engaged, made sure we had anything we wanted, opened up the kitchen to us if we wanted any snacks. And there is nothing like waking up in the morning to have breakfast made for you when you come downstairs. I loved our stay here, we never slept so well, and I thank the comfortable bed for that but, I also think we were made to feel at home by a very friendly innkeeper. I am so happy that I found this place when I googled places to stay. Cheryl was solo since her husband was on a trip. She didn't miss a beat in taking care of us and any of the other guest. She is an excellent cook! The pictures on the website do not do it justice on how beautiful the mountains are in the backyard. There is an abundance of deer to sit and enjoy in the evenings. Basically, just check in, relax, sleep, and wake up to a beautiful breakfast (included in the price!). As a side note, the coffee bar was amazing. Absolutely delicious coffee. We were a little nervous that breakfast would be awkward with strangers, but we had a great morning with the other guests! Anyway, We had an amazing time at the Claiborne house. We come to rocky mount a few times a year to visit family and find that the current accommodations around town are very much lacking. I am so glad that we found the Claiborne House. First, the rooms were absolutely adorable. We stayed in the Cottage room which is actually its own tiny building separate from the home nestled in the back garden. Second, This room was extra private and I liked that we were the closest to the back parking lot. Also, There was a bonfire pit in the garden with plenty of seating. This would be a great place to open a bottle of wine and relax with your partner. I recommend the Claiborne house for anyone visiting the local area or anyone from the local area that is just looking for a beautiful, relaxing, getaway!

Amy and Matt had a perfect balance of making us feel at home while also giving us privacy. Their house is beautiful! Although it was a large house, it was super cozy. We stayed in the Cottage, which has a private entrance from the parking area as well as a walkway from the main house. And one of the highlights of our stay was the breakfast. Amy prepared eggs, potatoes, bacon, homemade pumpkin bread, and homemade rolls. It tasted amazing with some fresh coffee and orange juice - just what we needed before we hit the road for a 4 hour drive. P.S. My only single ~slight~ concern was that the wifi was a little unreliable in the Cottage (BUT to be fair, you should stay off your electronics and enjoy your stay instead of having too much screen time). Again, this was only a tiny concern, this had no influence on lowering my rating... easiest 5 star rating I've ever given. We had never stayed at a traditional bed and breakfast and while the idea was charming (I've seen my share of Hallmark movies), thought that the experience was reserved for a different demographic...I thought the rooms were going to be dated and filled with frilly lace, that the dynamic with the owners was going to be awkward, that we would have to engage in forced conversation with other guests. It's not that we're antisocial, on the contrary, I just had a lot of misconceptions swirling around my head. I trust my husband though, he went ahead and booked it. I can't speak highly enough of our experience with Chris, Jayne, and their little pup Jax. When we mentioned that we would be getting to Roanoke a bit earlier than their check-in time, they were available to welcome us with smiling faces. Chris showed us the before/after of the home's renovations and how it was salvaged, the only one of four houses on the block where the other three were condemned. The home itself is gorgeous, they have put a lot of thought and care into how the rooms are decorated - the photos on this Yelp page are outdated, their website (blacklanterninn.com) does a better job of showcasing their beautiful accommodations. Chris and Jayne live on the first floor with 2 rooms and a shared kitchen on the second floor and a suite on the third floor. We were one of only two rooms booked for the evening, we never saw the other couple as they arrived later and left earlier than us - it was like we had the whole place to ourselves. Chris recommended a number of local breweries, bars, and restaurants for us to explore - he pointed out their 2nd floor deck, complete with cozy blankets and a fireplace heater (perfect for us to share a late night glass of wine). We stayed in the Black Lantern Room which was bright and cheerful, it looked like a page straight out of a restoration hardware catalog. The bed was incredibly comfortable and a welcome sight after a 5 hour drive and an afternoon/evening of eating/drinking our way through downtown Roanoke. In the morning we enjoyed a delicious all-organic breakfast crafted by Jayne. We were treated to yogurt sourced from New Hampshire, an incredible gluten-free coffee cake made with sweet potato flour (that Chris has gone on quite the goose chase to track down), and a veggie filled egg frittata on an english muffin with swiss cheese and bacon. I typically have to hide vegetables into my husbands food, but even knowing what was baked into his breakfast he hummed his way through (a sign he is enjoying his meal) the sandwich; we were also treated to Roanoke's own H&C coffee. We enjoyed our breakfast along with the company of Jax and the kind and genuine conversation of Jayne and Chris - they truly put a lot of love into the experience they provide their guests. As we were leaving, Jayne handed us 2 little baggies with locally baked croissants for our 4 1/2 drive down to North Carolina - they really do think of everything. I can't speak highly enough of our short stay here and would absolutely and wholeheartedly recommend the Black Lantern Inn and our gracious hosts to anyone looking for a place to stay in the area.

I looked into a Bed and Breakfast and found the Rockwood Manor. The price was what you would expect with no price gouging whatsoever. It turned out to be a very happy turn of events. Rockwood Manor is about a 15 minute drive from Radford university and was perfect for our needs. The Manor is on the historic register. A bit rustic on in places, it was last renovated in 2005. It is a beautiful place and our Hosts Frank and Rochelle were warm, friendly and very welcoming. We stayed in the Blakemore room. It had lots of windows which provided a nice view of the property. Our room also had a jacuzzi which we used and it was amazing after a long day on the road. The bed was a bit more firm than what we are used to at home and we recommended a mattress topper but by no means is this a negative as it is a personal preference. The linens were nice and clean and smelled fresh. We walked around the property and they looked to be all set up for wedding events. Lots of space, lots of areas for photo ops. It would be an ideal place for a wedding with room for a reception. The inside while at one point was the family home was like walking through history. We loved it. My favorite thing about the place was that I felt at home. Frank and and Rochelle are wonderful hosts. The breakfast the next morning was great with options for everyone. They also set the food up buffet style which made me feel like I was at a big family breakfast :) The only suggestion I would have is for our hosts to look into some professional rug cleaning. There were a couple of stains in the rug under the table in our room would need professional stain removal to get out. This place is one of the best B&Bs my wife and I have ever visited. We loved it!!!

The grounds and the home are wonderful. The house is full of the history of the home, American values and beautifully addressed for the Christmas season. The services, food and amenities cannot be beat in a surreal time setting in America's past. Christy was wonderful; she reached out to ensure we could gain access, answers questions and prepared our breakfast the next morning. She is the best and should be acknowledged for her spirit of excellent service. Rockwood Manor also has a Hokie room in the basement, I am sure it was in tribute to my son's graduation. Two queen beds on the fourth floor (top floor), overlooking a part of the old cemetary and park. The room was spacious and nicely appointed, both beds were very comfortable. Along with a couple of seating chairs and a small corner table, there was all the amenities one expects traveling nowadays, coffee station, fridge and microwave. A work station and chair and a flat screen rounded out the room. A walk in shower in the oversized bathroom had plenty of hot water for my shower in the morning. It was bright, well lit and served its purpose as intended. Breakfast is included in the stay, and it was a decent enough start to the day. Scrambled eggs, breakfast meat with potatoes, along with an assortment of breads, grits, fruits, juices and coffee and teas. Cold cereals, and yogurts as well. The Lodge was so comfortable and hosts, David and Ginger McDonald, were so friendly and accommodating. It was the perfect respite from a tiresome and anxiety filled week of packing for a move. I slept like a baby in a bed so comfy I wanted to take it home. Although it was rainy and the fog kept us from exploring outdoors the warm ambiance inside the lodge and time spent with family made this a sweet and memorable experience. The lodge has been there for quite a while but David and Ginger, the new owners, are determined to make it a haven for guests and a destination for the area. They went out of their way to welcome us...even offering to drive down the mountain thru heavy fog to pick up our dinner we ordered! Totally unexpected and certainly above and beyond the duty of a host! Loved it! Can't wait to find an excuse to visit again.
