The room we stayed in was so nice. We only wished the lounge was open during the entire evening so we could have come back after dinner to enjoy the space and a couple drinks. I will definitely stay here again when in the area.

Then, the two-story windows that had NO BLACKOUT SHADES/CURTAINS!!!! It was like it was perpetually 6am morning light - couldn't sleep well because of it. EXTREMELY CHEAP blinds were put up and the handle to twist ONLY THE BOTTOM HALF open or closed was at 7 FOOT HIGH!!! What the heck??!! We couldn't reach it. Spend the money to have good custom blinds and blackout curtains installed. Give up the free cookies, wine/cheese, etc and make the ROOMS COMFORTABLE!!!! Then the tiles in the bathroom stick up ABOVE the grout, so the edges feel sharp and it is NOT COMFORTABLE to stand on - very cheaply done. The elevator buttons were cracked and the #3 button was TAPED ON!!!! Made me worry about the safety of the elevator. Bathroom floors should be smooth, with the tile INSET into the grout. VERY DISAPPOINTED FOR A HISTORIC HOTEL OF AMERICA, we have stayed at many.

Chosen family- John has been family to the brides side since before she was born. We arrived at 3pm on a cool, fall Saturday in November. The grounds beg to be explored, the history of the house has secrets in her stairwells and rooms. The architecture breathtaking. We waited by the koi pond until it was time to take our seats in the lower garden for the ceremony. Cocktail hour was outside as well and the temperature was dropping. We couldn't wait to get inside for dinner. Well- it wasn't much warmer indoors. The dining area was split between two rooms, one of which was a sun room- all glass doors around the room. The interior room had a giant fireplace blazing in the center. We sat in the outer room- my shawl stayed on throughout dinner. I wore fleece leggings under my gown because I am always cold, but even that wasn't enough. The staff! They wowed me- from escorting guest to the powder rooms (clear on the other side of the house), to the bartenders making drinks the whole night, to the servers working our side of the dining room. Every member of the staff was beyond helpful and friendly. Amanda and Katherine worked the bar & were fantastic! And the servers I encountered all hustled while helping the guests- Christian, Dylan & Kelton were on our dining room team. Special shout out to all of them, they made a great impression. Food- fresh salad and warm dinner rolls were set down first. Wine glasses filled & water glass too. John and I both opted for steak as our main- cooked perfectly and I know that's not easy when catering an event. The whipped potatoes and green beans perfection. The table were set beautifully. The dance floor was in the pool room, the put the floor down right over it! Which was comical because of the bounce in the floors once the dancing began. Being cold the whole time, I couldn't wait for the dj to turn it up. They had the doors open for the dance floor room leading out to the lower gardens where the nuptials were earlier. At this point the sun had set and all of the guest were cold. That was my only complaint- we needed heat for cocktail hour and definitely heat for dinner. Once the dancing began, I warmed up quickly & even had to take 10 outside, without my shawl, to cool down! The festivities were to go on till 10:30pm, but some of us more seasoned guests departed before that. I really hope to come back and explore the estate in the future.

This hotel is located in the heart of downtown inside the original RJR building. The front desk staff are all professional, friendly and kind, each encounter with desk staff was exceptional. Valet parking is the only real option, unless you want to drive around looking for a limited parking spot. All of the valet team are professional, courteous and timely each went above and beyond for us. Very comfortable accommodations. We stayed in a king room the first time for a weekend and a king suite for the weeks stay. Both are comfortable, the suite's size and separate seating area definitely make it worth the difference if your stay is extended. King bed, very comfortable, quality linens, very quiet soundproofing with high ceilings and heavy drapery with modern minimalist wall decor. The bathrooms in both are nice the suite, another level of comfort. Walk in large shower with a vessel tub within the shower enclosure. This hotel is one of the higher end in town, it trys to hit those marks. Better than most. 4 Stars rounded up a full star for the steller staff here from the front desk, to valet team, housekeeping and room service everyone makes your stay here better. 01150

This quaint B&B…read moreis only a short drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway (maybe 5-8 minutes driving) and about 15-20 minutes drive to the Stone Mountain park. It is out of the way down a long driveway, and most likely you'll be greeted by their super friendly dog, Hunter. Jim and Margaret are great hosts, providing freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and lemonade upon arrival. The check-in process is short and sweet and they are available when you need them, but the place is big enough to give enough privacy despite the community spaces. I surprised my bf for his birthday and we came up just for one night. We stayed in the Yosemite room and it was perfect. The king bed was super comfortable, and the room had a ceiling fan, flat screen tv, electric fireplace (for ambiance and/or for heat), and the bathroom had a shower and a jacuzzi tub. It was right around the corner from the kitchen, so in terms of noise, you do hear the clinging and clanging of cooking and cabinets/drawers closing, but it wasn't a major issue for us. If you're sensitive to noise, then I would suggest getting a room on the second floor instead. Our room leads off to an external entrance to the back balcony/porch area so we could come and go from the back door instead of going through the house/common area which was nice. There is always access to coffee (fresh brewed in the morning or a Keurig for afternoon) and hot water for tea or hot chocolate. Upstairs, there is a small fridge that has complimentary can sodas and bottles of water for guests to have. I put our bottle of champagne there to chill. The highlight of the stay of course was the breakfast promptly served at 8:30a. We woke up to a beautiful spread and shared a nice breakfast with nice conversation with 12 other guests. It was family style, so we passed the food around and around until we were all miserably/happily stuffed. Margaret's famous cinnabuns were really delicious - super sweet and fresh. Overall - Everything was clean and just really done well with nice subtle touches throughout the B&B (ie. light music in the background of the common areas, fresh cut flowers in the bathroom and bedside, foaming bubble bath by the tub with a pillow, several candles in the room to assist with creating a romantic ambiance, super plush robes and Bath & Body Works shower products (soaps, shampoo, etc) to use... We definitely hope to come back and enjoy/relax again in the near future :)

The full kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans, dishes, coffee-maker, cups, coffee, tea and there was a plate of fresh-baked cookies waiting for us on the table when we arrived. Just off the kitchen is a full bathroom with a fantastic Jacuzzi tub. But the piece de resistance: the most perfect "settin' porch" overlooking the creek behind. No kidding, the perfect spot for your morning coffee! In the mornings, we walked up the hill to the main house log home with another amazing porch. The innkeepers make a homemade sumptuous breakfast every morning. On the first morning, there was fresh fruit, bacon, eggs, biscuits, cinnamon rolls, baked grits. On the second morning, we had shirred eggs with ham, waffles, Moravian sugar bread, fruit salad. We enjoyed the breakfast at a common table with other guests, sharing our stories of our journeys and adventures. Delish!!

I am always amused at the crap Yelpers will review. I have read reviews of "snow events", reviews…read moreof Yelp itself, and even the Supreme Court of the United States. Now one would think a review of the US Supreme Court would be about things like 1) Getting through security 2) Parking 3) How comfortable the seating was while listening to oral arguments 4) Vending machines. Do they have Coke products or shitty Pepsi? But no, they are more about political ideology. 1 star if you hate the Supreme Court make up or 5 star if you love it. Now who the hell cares? I don't give a shit! Give me a review that I can use. Now, what were we talking about? Oh yeah, a review of downtown Winston-Salem. Who the heck writes a review of downtown Winston-Salem, or any downtown for that matter? Now before you throw stones, I was not the first person do review of downtown. Another Yelper took the time to add downtown as a business on Yelp and write a review. I stumbled across it and decided to...what the hell..I'll check in. Now Yelp expects a review. So I will try to make this useful, but I know that NOBODY will ever search for downtown WS on Yelp. 1) Safety - Downtown WS is very safe. Like any city of its size, there is crime but trust me, you will be safe. Just use common sense. 2) Shops - We got lots of shopping downtown. Art shit, consignment shops, WS targeted shops, etc.. 3) Restaurants - Great selection. Perhaps could use some additional diversity but getting there. High end places, middle of the road and cheap eats. 4) Drinking - My specialty. Trust me on this, I am a professional drinker. Plenty of places to get a cocktail, beer (local brew) or wine. 5) Parking - Decent selection of parking garages as well as street parking for the parallel parking experts. Prices are great in comparison to Charlotte. 6) Pan Handlers - We got a few like every city but nothing on the scale of Charlotte or Nashville. Actually, this activity has decreased significantly over time. 7) Architecture and History - One of the things I love about downtown WS are the buildings. The old Reynolds building, Pepper building, Arts district, etc., etc. I love that WS has preserved much of its history. 8) Traffic - Not a big deal. This city is over 200 thousand but feels much smaller. Warning, just watch yourself while crossing the streets. Even though you have the right away, just make sure the cars are stopping for you. I love downtown WS. I have spent a lot of time and money here. It is the perfect size for me. Highly recommend coming and spending the day here.
