My 20 year old son and I stayed here for one night in May 2026 after his move-out from Virginia Tech. Lots of pluses. First, the location is close to I-81 and convenient for the 20 minute drive to Blacksburg. Second, the interior lobby is cheerful with colorful glass art. Third, the fitness center was nicer than expected with several treadmills. Fourth, the queen-size beds were quite comfortable. Finally, the DIY breakfast from 6am-10am is what you would expect from Hampton Inns. Overall, I would recommend this Hampton Inn if you're passing through the area and need a location that is convenient to I-81. read more

Overall, our stay at the Hampton Inn Salem was okay, but there were definitely a few things that could have been better. It worked fine for what we needed while traveling, but I would consider it more of an average hotel experience. The lady who checked us in was very helpful and friendly. Check in went smoothly, and we had no issues getting settled into our room. The breakfast was also good. It was your typical hotel breakfast with the usual options, but everything we had was good and it was nice having breakfast available before getting back on the road. One of my biggest disappointments was the fitness room. I like being able to get a workout in while traveling, but only one of the three treadmills was working. Having three treadmills available looks great, but it does not help much when two of them are out of service. Hopefully they get those repaired soon. Another thing we noticed was a strong chemical smell throughout the hallways. It smelled like the carpets had recently been cleaned, but either too much cleaning solution was used or the carpets had not been completely rinsed and dried. The smell was pretty noticeable when walking through the halls and made them smell damp rather than freshly cleaned. I appreciate that they are cleaning the carpets, but whatever process was used could definitely be improved. The hotel itself served its purpose for our trip. The staff interaction we had was good, breakfast was convenient, and we were able to get some rest before continuing on our travels. Nothing happened that would make me say this was a terrible stay, but there were enough small issues that I could not rate the experience higher. With some attention to the fitness equipment and the carpet cleaning situation, this could easily be a better experience. For a quick overnight stop while traveling, it gets the job done, but based on this particular stay, I would consider it an average hotel experience overall. read more

We stayed at the Hampton Inn while attending the Front Line Freedom hike and had a great experience. The hotel was extremely accommodating to our group. They allowed us to gather in the lobby for a few hours at night with others participating in the hike, which made it a great place to connect and spend time together. They also have a beautiful outdoor area with a fire pit where we were able to relax, enjoy some cigars, and have a few drinks after a long day. It really added to the overall experience. One of the standout touches was the staff opening the breakfast buffet early for us since we had very early morning hikes. They did this for two days over the weekend, which did not go unnoticed and was greatly appreciated. The staff was friendly, accommodating, and went out of their way to make sure we were taken care of. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and well maintained. Highly recommend this Hampton Inn, especially if you are traveling with a group. They truly went above and beyond. read more

We stayed one night on our way through the area. The room we were assigned on the top floor was undergoing renovations so no pictures on the wall and temporary window coverings. Other wise the room was in excellent condition. Bed comfortable, expected quality linens and bathroom updated. Lots of space in the bathroom for personal items and in room fridge and microwave. The bathroom door slides between the closet and bathroom, which I see a lot these days. From a decorator point of view this makes for 'clean lines', but it's not especially private when you need to use the toilet. The common area on the ground floor is decorated in what look like Chihuly glass artwork hung on the walls. The seating throughout the lobby and breakfast area look new with plenty of comfortable seats and a TV. They also offer newspapers in the lobby as well as a market which sells healthcare items, snacks, soda and a few things you can microwave in your room. You can add them to your room bill or pay for them by seeing reception. This area is under surveillance. We use the hotel app to make reservations and had limited interaction with staff. When we arrive reception looked up the reservation, verify our ID and credit card, hand over the keys, let us know what time breakfast is served and we are on our way. There was only one other party checking in and we were on our way to the room in a matter of minutes. Staff we encountered, however briefly, were all pleasant. The breakfast area is a good size off the back of the lobby. All the breakfast items you would expect are here including waffles. The area was clean and there are a variety of seating options. The coffee, tea, hot cocoa station is separate from the breakfast buffet area. Plenty of parking around the building with handicap spaces by the entrance and an awning in front to unload your bags. This Hampton Inn is nicely secluded away from the main road, but is still conveniently located next to the freeway and rest of Salem. They have plenty of well lit parking and you don't need to feel nervous about your car being left in the lot. They have a nice grassed area designated to walk your pets on but it's not fenced so you'll want to keep them leashed. The rooms were clean and the beds comfortable. I stayed here for two days during a motorcycle trip due to rain, without feeling like I was trapped. More like just resting from the road. I used the laundry while I was here and it works well but it's only a single washer and drier, so hopefully nobody is there before you. The real perks about this place are the employees. When I needed to adjust my check out date they were able to accommodate without any problem. They have been nothing but pleasant to speak with, and helpful in every way. They have truly made my unexpectedly longer than scheduled stay here a pleasure. read more

We came in for a softball tournament and a 4 night stay (Tuesday-Friday). We arrived around dinner time and checked in with no problem. The hotel appeared as all Hampton Inns do - clean, well-dept, coffee 24/7, lounging area, business center, eating table for the morning breakfast. Fitness center and indoor pool at this one. Our room was the usual - non-smoking with 2 double beds. Fridge, coffee maker, large screen TV. Plenty of outlets which we always seem to need for laptop and gadgets. Clean, plush towels and crisp, white sheets. We quickly unpacked and looked for dinner. There are plenty of restaurants and stores close by - Angelle's, Momma Maria's, and others. Plus a Food Lion less than a mile and plenty of stores within 2 miles. Sadly, the FedEx print center is far away - which I needed. Also, the business center printer was down - which I also needed. But the incredible Morgan behind the desk found me a solution and saved the day. She was like all the staff - friendly and effective. The gym was great - especially because there was never anyone there when I was. So no ear buds needed and no conversations. They had dumbbells (minus 15 pounders, just MIA), a couple mate, weight benches and a some other weighted equipment I don't know the name for. In an adjoining room they have plenty of treadmills and bikes. And lots of TVs - all managed with one remote. So you have to be very close and point the remote to the TV you want to watch. Towels, water cooler and antibacterial wipes all provided. The other important thing for me - the breakfast and coffee situation. This Hampton Inn was TOPS! Coffee available - decaf hot. Hubby does the hot stuff - sausage, eggs, whatever's in the warmer. Of course they always have the waffle set up, bagels, muffins, cereal, juices, yogurt (YAY) BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY - they had "fresh" cut up fruit. I realize it's likely frozen when it arrives at the hotel, but citrus fruits, pineapple, grapes - GOOD STUFF and healthy. Until I pile whipped cream from the waffle area on top. But that's what makes this set up great - you do you - and enjoy! Coffee bar had flavored creamer - so cherry on the top! All in all, a great stay. I worked in the room for 3 days while the hubby coached softball and I normally had no car while he was gone. So I spent a LOT of time in the room and hotel - and I would definitely stay here again. My husband and I stayed here overnight to break up a long drive. In retrospect, I'd have felt better just driving the 11 hours straight through to our destination. The room seemed clean enough but the noise level from outside the room was so bad. Between the excessively loud elevator bells and the loud people upstairs and in the hall, I was thankful to have packed a white noise machine, which helped somewhat but not entirely. I could literally hear our neighbors in the next room open their window shades in the morning. No freezer section in the mini fridge so I couldn't refreeze my cold packs for the second leg of our trip. Breakfast buffet could have been way better. We ended up grabbing some coffee and hoping for a decent breakfast spot on the way. The worst, though, was the unadjustable heat in the room. They give you an illusion of control with a thermostat in the room but you can't truly adjust it (lord knows I tried). The excessive heat is what kept me up most of the night. When I'd finally drift off to a shallow sleep I was awakened from the pain in my shoulders, back, knees and hips from the bone crushingly hard mattress. This hotel was just "renovated" but certainly with no thoughtful consideration for guest comfort. read more

Lots of good here. Recommended. Let me start with the not-so-hot and then end with the good stuff. My biggest complaint (which isn't that big) is that the doors to the bathrooms in the rooms are barn-style doors that roll from the top (see picture, if I get around to posting it). The doors are quite heavy; they don't lock; and, most annoying of all, the doors scrap at the top so, little specs of white paint fall down on your head when you go in and out. Not a huge deal, but a bit deleterious. Kind of good-and-bad put together: the place is pet-friendly, which is great, but there are doggy "land mines" in the grass all around the place. Not the staff's fault; there is a designated dog area, and trash bags are provided, but people evidently don't use them. Another good-and-bad: the hotel is _right_ off the interstate, so it's very easy to get to, but you can hear some interstate traffic. If you're a light sleeper, you may hear a horn in the middle of the night, like I did. It's not very noticeable, but it is there. Now, beyond that, this place is terrific. It has the usual Hampton excellences: it's clean; it's comfortable; the staff is very friendly and helpful; the facilities are great; the breakfast is delicious. The room was wonderful, Comfortable beds; clean room; fridges and microwaves: lovely. Lobby was lovely, with several areas for sitting and relaxing. There's a beautiful veranda in the back with lots of patio seating, two grills, and a beautiful firepit. Fitness center is impressive for a hotel its size. Numerous weights, balls, treadmills, bikes, and ellipticals, all in good shape. Fitness center is open 6 AM till midnight. Staff were friendly; special shout-out to Donna and Libby at check-in; Mark for cleaning up public areas; Jane for making breakfast. Breakfast was outstanding. Jane was on top of not only keeping everything stocked, but also very neat and clean. They had almost everything you can imagine: biscuits, grits, waffles (strawberry and regular batter, and then condiments like syrup, sugar-free syrup, caramel, chocolate syrup, whipped cream), oatmeal (with craisins and nuts and other additions), cereal (apple jacks, raisin bran, and others), milk, juice, coffee, bagels, toast, English muffins (all individually ziploc bagged), peanut butter, whipped cream, strawberry and grape jelly, yogurt, eggs, sausage... all delicious. Indoor pool was clean and well-kept, with lots of towels available. Pool is open 8 AM till 10 PM. Pro tips (if you're still reading this far): Even-number rooms have a lovely view out the front, mostly at the interstate; odd-numbered rooms have a view out the back, mostly at woods; good view either way. Higher-numbered rooms are closer to the main parking lot and the ice, if you care; elevators are centrally located, so it kind of doesn't matter in the long run, but there ya go. Long and short, very good hotel. Fix the bathroom doors, and it'd be top quality. Wish I could have stayed to enjoy it longer. read more

As I was showering I notice the bathtub was not draining and after pulling the drain cap off there was a lot of disgusting clump of hair blocking the drain. I complained to the receptionist at the front desk and I sent a text message as I was told to the manager. We have not received any response from the manager. I stayed here for 6 nights and am a huge fan. I had business in Roanoke, and this hotel was a 15 minute drive. Nestled away from the congestion of downtown, but also conveniently located by the interstate. I loved their coffee/tea/hot chocolate station. I also chose this spot so I wouldn't have to worry about breakfast in the morning, which is served daily 0600-1000. I think that's a great time to have it every day, as opposed to closing earlier during the weekdays, because not everyone staying here is adhering to the early morning schedule. They have yogurt, eggs, sausage, waffles, juices, biscuits and gravy, cereal, oatmeal, muffin and bagels. There's lots of seating and the front lobby area isn't crowded. This hotel also has an indoor pool and an enclosed back patio that includes grills, a fireplace and a tv. I sat out there one morning and it just felt very pleasant. The fitness center is on the larger side for a hotel gym. They have two large mirrors, a great machine for you to work every body part, a few benches, free weights, medicine balls and cardio equipment. I had a great workout. My entire hotel stay was very pleasant and I would stay here again. read more

This was not a good hotel experience. When I was checking in, the front desk person asked me my phone number and address. I said it should be on my AAA booking record. She said it might be someone at AAA marking a mistake. But, I did it online directly. There was no third person involved. It was funny that they had my name and credit card info right. Then she said I booked the room with a king size bed with disable accessibility. She said she had to switch me to a regular room with 2 queen size beds. I said it didn't matter. But when I got to my room, I received a text message alert from my credit card about the charge. It was $10 higher than my AAA rate. I asked her why. She said it was for the incidental expense charge. It can be refunded. It is a motel and does not have expensive art work or a wet bar. They can easily wait for me to check out to settle the bill. They have my credit card info already. It is a bad business practice. It can be an excuse to up the charge. I hope it is not the general Hampton Inn policy. Maybe it is only happened in this Hampton Inn. This morning when I checked out, once again I was assured that the $10 was for incidental expense and can be automatically dropped off. I will see if this is true. Then I was assigned to the room where the window curtain won't cover the entire window. And there was a high power flood light outside shining directly to the room. The light was so bright that keeping me awake. I will not recommend this hotel at all. Also, it is quite isolated location with no restaurants near by. The room does not have a local restaurants info for food delivery. All in all, the hotel is not customer friendly and the facility is not keeping up the Hampton Inn standards. read more

Everyone super friendly. Around the corner quality inn wouldn't show me room- seemed dated, lack of customer service - so we went up scale to Hampton - best choice ever! Joined membership. Breakfast was great. Coffee bar 24/7 was great- clean and neat- patio with fire was amazing and on at nt and in the morning. Could see from our room, even tho cold out , super cool ambiance. My wife, son and I stayed here on 8/19/17 and the hotel itself might be nice but stay away from room 127. It has a king sized bed in a separate bedroom and two double beds in the main room. Unfortunately it is up against a wall and two windows shared by an outdoor grill area with a 60 inch tv hanging on the shared wall and you can certainly hear it and the people watching it. Also the bedroom shares a door with an electrical room that has a light on all the time that shines through the bottom of the door and provides a nice loud transformer hum for you to sleep to. And last but not least, across the hall is the loudest ice maker fan in existence. I almost ripped its power cord out of the wall. Other than all this noise, the beds, bathroom and breakfast was nice. read more

This location promised me a discounted rate for the proper dates so I booked the rooms and they would not honor the discounted rate. Located right behind an exit ramp, along Rt 81. This was once a Holiday Inn. Since Hampton took it over, they renovated the entire place and it looks fresh and new. Very clean and good sized rooms. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They do have a small store, for munchies and such. The only negatives are the elimination of the restaurant (though do now serve a free continental breakfast) and the elevators probably should have been replaced. They sounded a bit iffy, on each ride. I would definitely stay here again. read more
