Damascus Old Mill is a very good experience and I recommend you try it. This review is for the Old Mill restaurant. Overall, good. Atmosphere is nice with the river and overflow dam nearby that if you're next to a window you can see. Atmosphere overall is ok. Nice tables and chairs; outlay of the table is ok, nothing special. The sun blinds most people in the early evening at the restaurant. They have blinds. I think Damascus Old Mill is a solid 4 stars for all of their amenities, service, and food quality and quantity. Charles was our waiter and he said as 5 stars. I watch other wait staff and they ranged from average 3 to 4 stars. Some didn't know the alcohol menu as much as I'd want a server to know it. We had burger, sirloin and ribeye. All were good and everyone was satisfied with their selection and the food. I was disappointed in their ribeye. Good cut, but was undercooked for my medium request. The cut was ok and I didn't think it was as tender as I'd expected from a 21 day aged meat. It was ok. I would casually recommend it, especially for $50 for a ribeye. Desserts...absolutely delicious! I need to try them all. Overall, Damascus Old Mill restaurant is a recommend. I'd skip the ribeye and go their burger frankly. Ribeye is it all that for their price point. read more

You can take Ellen's Stardust Diner in NYC if you want, but I'll just visit Damascus Old Mill again soon. I didn't think dinner could get better than my juicy grilled pork chop, but then our waitress sang a song!!! We were seated in the large dining room with Richie Kennedy playing instrumentals on the piano. Everyone was enjoying their food, the atmosphere was cozy, and our waitress Fallyn Grace Presley decided to take a break and sing a song with the piano man... Outstanding. Now back to my pork chop for a moment. What a great grilled flavor, and the right amount of sweetness from the blackberry glaze The only thing left on my plate was the bone, and it was calling my name. So I forgot that I was in a public restaurant, with a big beard, I shoved it in my face and picked it clean. I never cease to be amazed at the incredible community I'm part of. The menu is great and they do a great job of selling you on the dish but the presentation is less than I expected. The view is incredible and the staff is top notch but the food needs an upscale. Wonderful location. Ate Breakfast overlooking over the creek. Breakfast was home made fresh blueberry muffins. Staff member Betty on hand for check in and breakfast. The rooms were comfortable with ample space, great view of the creek, and other amenities to include small fridge, table and two chairs. I originally planned on staying one night, hike Mt Rogers and proceed north. I changed my mind and stayed a second night. Great value, staff, room, and view. Extremely slow kitchen, but I liked my drink and most of my meal. This place was very cute and right on the waterfront. We stopped to get a meal in hopes of sitting and enjoying the view. When my dining companion asked if we could sit outside, she was told no with no explanation. However, we saw multiple other parties come after us and get seated by the water. There were only a couple of parties inside where we got put. They were out of several of the menu options that we asked about, including coming back after we ordered to tell us that they were out of things. It took about 20 minutes from when I put in my drink order to when I actually got my drink. That being said, the Old Mill Old Fashioned was loads of fun and smoked on the table. The bartender was apologetic that it took a while. From when we placed our order to when our food came, it was about 35 mins. Our server didn't acknowledge that the wait was unusually long. I got the pimento cheese sandwich with a side of mac & cheese. I didn't realize the mac & cheese had bacon on it, but I guess I should've explicitly asked. I did ask if multiple other options had meat on them, so I'm surprised it wasn't brought up proactively. My dining companion got the BLT, and was really bummed because it had pimento cheese on it. She barely ate it because she's intolerant to spice. The menu did not say anything about pimento cheese being on that sandwich. However, given that it took a really long time for our food to come out, we made the executive decision to eat and get out of there. Overall, we don't know what happened. If all of the weird slowness had happened at a lovely outdoor table, we probably would've been okay. But I spent most of my meal trying to convince my dining companion not to walk out. Was at the restaurant during Trial Days Festival with wife and 2 oldest grandkids. Was able to get in without reservations. Table for 4. But most of food was cold and had to be reheated. Waitress was very nice and reheated our plates. Great atmosphere on the River at Damascus Dam. Food was alright but was nothing to brag about. Also got dessert which was ok again. We tried to be polite and keep our manners. This was the best choice. The whole check was paid by the manager. This was unbelievable! Come for the view, stay for food and service. I came in limping, bleeding, dusty, weary, and in a state of mild shock after a wipeout on the trail. We had burgers. My buddy thought it was about the best burger he'd ever had. I thought it was pretty good, but I'll defer to his judgment due to the state I was in. Service was prompt, courteous, and friendly. Stayed here before our start on the AT for a week of spring break. The hotel room was about as close to staying at a friends home or a mountain cabin as you could get. It was comfortable, clean and no frills. The owners/staff were the best! They called me ahead of time, checked in on us and were quite warm-hearted. This place should stay around forever. We were on the second floor and the river was full due to recent rains. The views were great. The location for a trail start could not be better. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed for the season. Would have loved to try that out and was disappointed not to get a real breakfast on the way out. They did a decent continental, but my mind/stomach/and, heart were looking for something more nurishing before 60 miles of trail. Would definitely return any time and recommend it. read more

The Old Mill is not as good as it once was. Went there on a Friday night, without reservation, which was not a problem. Had to sit inside but that didn't bother me. I had the trout, in which I was really looking forward to having. My husband had the ribs. His ribs were good,and tender.My trout was not that good, it was pretty dry and not that tasty. It came over plain white rice. The lemon that came with it gave it some flavor. The side salad that I had to pay $ 3 dollars more for, was good. My husband side of squash was so salty we couldn't eat it. Our bill with tip and all was $95. I loved the food there about 2 years ago. I guess they changed cooks, since then. Every year we try to give The Damascus Old Mill business while we stay nearby for the summer. Every year over the past 4-5 has been a disappointment and we end up not returning for the rest of the season. Either a problem with food preparation or service. This weekend we had a reservation. When we arrived we stood at the door for about 10-15 minutes past our reservation time. There was no host on duty and 3 different staff passed by us without acknowledging we were there. Finally, I caught one of them and said, "Excuse me, we have a reservation." The staff says, "I see you there." I replied, "It would be nice if you could acknowledge that." Just basic customer service saying, I'm sorry, we are really busy and we will be with you shortly. After saying this to the server, I felt kind of bad, as the poor woman was waiting tables, clearing tables, and expected to seat people. The Damascus Old Mill could be a sensational establishment, yet it continues to limp along due to poor management. We will be back, with low expectations, hopefully to be surprised some day. read more

I honestly couldn't recommend this place to anyone! I never leave reviews, but I had to say something. We waited for about an hour at least before our order was taken. Whenever we finally got our food my wife's salad with salmon, the salmon was raw. My BLT had maybe one piece of bacon. My Mac and cheese was literally watery and cold. We said something about the salmon being raw. Our server just brought out a plate, set it in front of us and said, put it on the plate I'm not touching it. She was going to refire the salmon and just put it back on my wife's salad! Evan after all the raw juice was all over it. They never said anything about it and just charged us full price for food that we couldn't eat. So no I would never go back or recommend this place to anyone. read more

This is by far my favorite restaurant in Damascus. Everything I have had here is exceptional and my servers have been fantastic both times I have visited!
