The Old Mill is not as good as it once was. Went there on a Friday night, without reservation, which was not a problem. Had to sit inside but that didn't bother me. I had the trout, in which I was really looking forward to having. My husband had the ribs. His ribs were good,and tender.My trout was not that good, it was pretty dry and not that tasty. It came over plain white rice. The lemon that came with it gave it some flavor. The side salad that I had to pay $ 3 dollars more for, was good. My husband side of squash was so salty we couldn't eat it. Our bill with tip and all was $95. I loved the food there about 2 years ago. I guess they changed cooks, since then. We won't be back for dinner, maybe for lunch or a drink. I love the view there, and we did have good service. read more

Every year we try to give The Damascus Old Mill business while we stay nearby for the summer. Every year over the past 4-5 has been a disappointment and we end up not returning for the rest of the season. Either a problem with food preparation or service. This weekend we had a reservation. When we arrived we stood at the door for about 10-15 minutes past our reservation time. There was no host on duty and 3 different staff passed by us without acknowledging we were there. Finally, I caught one of them and said, "Excuse me, we have a reservation." The staff says, "I see you there." I replied, "It would be nice if you could acknowledge that." Just basic customer service saying, I'm sorry, we are really busy and we will be with you shortly. After saying this to the server, I felt kind of bad, as the poor woman was waiting tables, clearing tables, and expected to seat people. The Damascus Old Mill could be a sensational establishment, yet it continues to limp along due to poor management. We will be back, with low expectations, hopefully to be surprised some day. read more

This is by far my favorite restaurant in Damascus. Everything I have had here is exceptional and my servers have been fantastic both times I have visited! For a more upscale meal I highly recommend the Old Mill! The fried green tomatoes, veggie pasta, and cheese tortellini were all great! I think the best thing was the cheese tortellini! read more

I honestly couldn't recommend this place to anyone! I never leave reviews, but I had to say something. We waited for about an hour at least before our order was taken. Whenever we finally got our food my wife's salad with salmon, the salmon was raw. My BLT had maybe one piece of bacon. My Mac and cheese was literally watery and cold. We said something about the salmon being raw. Our server just brought out a plate, set it in front of us and said, put it on the plate I'm not touching it. She was going to refire the salmon and just put it back on my wife's salad! Evan after all the raw juice was all over it. They never said anything about it and just charged us full price for food that we couldn't eat. So no I would never go back or recommend this place to anyone. read more

Not sure what I was thinking when I paid $180 for a room here. Wanted 2 beds, and they gave me a queen and a sleeper sofa room. Sleeper sofa was mediocre, I had to actually sleep on the sofa cushions, mattress was thin as cardboard! No washer or dryer in this hotel??!? Cafe was not open either. What did I actually pay for? Highly recommending the Damascus Old Mill 10/10. When I tell you these were the nicest people... they were the nicest people! We stayed in the Victorian House in the lower level room with a fireplace. After we got to the room, we discovered the fireplace wasn't working correctly. So while we were at dinner, Phil, the general manager had it fixed. Wahh lahhh - fireplace on the rest of the weekend! Food in the restaurant was also pretty good, very convenient and sweet and helpful server. Lots of ducks and and we even saw a beaver in the river out back. Chasity recommended a stop by Backbone Rock on the way out and it was worth the detour as we were heading home. Didn't make it to the Creeper Trail, but spent the day in Bristol and toured the Birthplace of Country Music Museum. Had lunch and did some axe throwing. All super fun and just enough to do for the weekend. Go see the folks at Damascus Old Mill. You will be glad you did! read more

Enjoyed a lovely Saturday night dinner outside overlooking Laurel Creek. Contrary to other reviews, our service was excellent. Food came out fast and hot, waitress and bartender were both friendly and attentive. Tried the smoked trout spread as an appetizer, served with freshly fried pita wedges- nice chunks of fish, mixed with cream cheese, celery, and shredded cheddar. Entrees were both quite good: vegetarian root risotto with roasted mushrooms was perfect (seriously), and the grilled catfish was delicious. Remoulade was a little heavy-handed for grilled but the catfish can also be blackened or fried. Both entrees came with seasonal steamed veggies. Pretty good selection of local & regional craft beers. The bartender kindly let me try a few, which introduced me nearby Abington's Wolf Hills Brewing Company's Honey Cream Ale. Next time we're going to make a visit to the brewery. We finished our enjoyable evening with live bluegrass from a local husband-wife duo who play weekly here. Would happily return here on a future visit to Damascus! read more

Well I was disappointed. First we sat outside. The view of the falls and birds was nice for the half of our table that faced them (the other half looked at a brown wall), however someone put up a very tacky "Love" sign on the opposite bank of the river as in Love VA. Might as well have put up a billboard. Good grief! Also be forewarned, conversation next to the falls is nearly impossible- it's quite loud! I rarely (perhaps never?) comment about the appearance of the waitstaff, but wow! A place with $25 entrees should have a dress code if the kiddos in the area don't know how to dress appropriately or the restaurant could provide uniforms. Service was fine, no issues for me! Appetizer of fried green tomatoes was good. The salad was good, the homemade Thousand Island was good but not traditional. Red Lobster rolls are better. The entree was a disaster and fortunately they refunded the cost. The rice was cold, no seasoning. Not lukewarm cold, but parts were cold like it came out of a refrigerator. Silly me I tried caramelized trout. It was so awful! First it wasn't fresh and had a very fishy taste (fresh trout doesn't). Second it wasn't caramelized, it had kind of like caramel juice on it? Third it needed juice because it was not moist and flaky, but rather dry dry dry like shoe leather! Stopped in to eat here after completing the entire Virginia Creeper so we were really hungry!! Our meal didn't disappoint... we each had a house salad and split the honey pecan chicken and had leftovers to take home. The fried green tomatoes were the best I've ever had!! After hiking hard for three days straight, we came here for a good sit down meal. Unfortunately, the service was terrible. We couldn't even get our waters refilled while we waited 90 minutes for our food. I could go into more detail about the neglectful service, but won't bore you with the details. The manager eventually comped our meal and asked us not to "take it out on the establishment," but I think it is only fair to warn fellow travelers. Probably the nicest place to eat in Damascus with the best service. Prices aren't bad and the view can't be beat. Plus, anything else in town you have to find street parking or walk, they have a parking lot here. Typically I visit the Mill yearly during Trail Days for lunch or breakfast. Everything I've ever ordered has come out fast, right, hot, and good. The food itself isn't exceptional, but neither is it low quality, somewhere right in the middle, maybe a few points higher. They also didn't have a problem splitting up the checks on a large party as well. read more

A nice table overlooking the spillover filled with Canada Geese was the setting for our Thanksgiving Dinner. The meal was more than plentiful starting with a fresh salad. It came in two separate plates. The first plate consisted of ham, green beans with green onions and a sweet potato dish. The second was the more traditional (for me) sliced turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, gravy and cranberry sauce. Everything was quite good, but my favorite bite was turkey/dressing/gravy. Yum! Ducks & more quakers greet you with unpretentious looks... from Mallards to Muscovy on the outer banks of Laurel Creek. Very friendly staff full of history tidbits, as well as, conversing with the owner, who relayed morsels of info about the area & beyond. The bar has beers on tap that expound on the Appalachian Trail, from GA to ME & (Tyler) was more then happy to relay the ins & outs of each one. Located in such a quaint little town, this was such a great find during our travels. It is located right beside a small waterfall with lots of outdoor seating. It wasn't busy at all around 5:30pm, so we sat right by the waterfall. The waitress was so nice and very attentive to our needs. We ordered an appetizer of fried pickle chips and beer battered fries. The fried were so delicious. Very crispy with lots of flavor. I think I could've eaten double. I'm not a fan of fried pickles, but my fiancé really enjoyed them. For our entree, we split the old Smokey chicken with stacked potatoes and vegetables. The flavor was delicious , however it was not hot when it came out to the table. The vegetables were nice and fresh and cooked in minimal oil, which is a bonus for me. Although we didn't grab a drink, they had plenty of beers on tap that sounded good. This restaurant does not accommodate vegan needs. Tonight I tried to order a simple salad with no cheese, no meat, and no eggs. The waitress suggested that they had a plain baked potato that would work for me also. So I ordered that. When the meal came out the salad had chicken, eggs and cheese in it. The baked potato was drowning in butter. The waitress said she would go back and bring out the correct items. They never appeared. The other people I was dining with had finished their meal and were paying and I told the waitress to cancel my order because it obviously was not going to arrive. No one bothered to come to the table with an apology. It was is if I did not exist. I know Damascus is a little mountain town in the middle of nowhere, but this place was pretending to be a first class-dining establishment. This is the 21st century, and restaurants that are up-to-date with what's going on in the world know to offer at least one offering for vegans. In this same town, I had lunch at a little hole in the wall named "HeyJoe's" and they have a vegetarian burrito on the menu. It was easy to ask them to leave out the sour cream and cheese. It was delicious and they were eager to accommodate my needs. The menu at Old Damascus Mill consisted of dishes smothered in butter and cheese. Its a trick restaurants use to make poorly prepared food taste better. No freshly grilled vegetables, no healthy food choices. Service was slow, even though the place was not busy. read more

Just visited the Damascus Old Mill Inn for the weekend:) it was awesome! The room was clean and very comfortable. The towels were nice and thick and soft. Our party of 4 arrived around 6 pm, to a fairly empty bar and dining room. We were seated along the windows overlooking Laurel Creek with a great view. There were maybe 6 other parties dining, no larger than 6 persons. Our server was attentive, but she couldn't make up for the fact that the kitchen was out of several entrees on the menu. (Disappointing for me as I was looking forward to the shrimp and grits.) Service was s-l-o-w as molasses, and blamed on the big party ahead of us. I'd hate to see how the kitchen would handle a full dining room! Our party commented that the food was good--but lukewarm. The bread and herbed butter was flat--a hint of salt would have improved it greatly. Among us we had: a ribeye, fried chicken, chopped steak, and a burger. For me, the side of fresh zucchini, yellow squash, peppers, and onions was the highlight. Overall, the food can't make up for the slow service, and we'd be hesitant to try the Old Mill Inn again. read more

Lovely setting in a restored mill, but the pleasant experience stops there. Service was atrocious. We waited 20 minutes for drinks to be served -our waitress said "they couldn't find the Pinot Noir." Our party of six ordered our meals at the same time as our drinks. 40 minutes later, four out of six meals were served - luke warm. After some time our waitress returned, giggled and said the computer messed up and "didn't get the second two orders." Four of us ate, while the other two waited patiently never to see the waitress again. Those of us that ate thought the meals were bland and the country steak overcooked. My SO and I stayed here on a Saturday night as a last minute get away for the Virginia Creeper Trail. There was only one room left that could sleep 6) when I booked on Wednesday. It was slightly more expensive then we wanted to pay but we really needed this get away. The room was very clean, had a nice shower, good towels, a coffee maker and overlooked the river. And Andes mints! Self serve Breakfast was included - eggs, yogurt, fruit, cereal and pastries. It was more then I expected. They even had almond milk on request. The setting was beautiful. We had both meals sitting on the back deck overlooking the waterfall. read more
