A stately, large old home with lots of interesting history. The mountain laurel inn featured several large suites and some other bedrooms with private baths. The public areas are large and welcoming. This park is exactly what I was looking for. I live full time in my camper van and wanted a place…read morethat I could park and not have to drive to get groceries, go to the post office, do laundry... etc. BUT I also wanted a place that was quiet and still felt like I was in nature. The park is designed so that each lot has the creek behind it. Right outside my window I have a beautiful view and a lovely sound to fall asleep to. Each spot has its own picnic table and a nice level gravel ground. It also is in walking distance to the Virginia Creeper Trail! If you don't know what that is, check it out! Another fabulous thing about this park was that my Verizon Cell service was clear enough to stream television online from abc.go.com. YAY! You will need to have your own bathroom and be fully self contained in your vehicle. The price is affordable! I don't ever use all the stuff that KOA's and resorts have... but end up paying for all of it. This is nice because it has a little more of a "camp" feeling and you don't have to sacrifice your whole months paycheck. LASTLY - Damascus is SUPER friendly! EVERYONE says hello when they walk by. Seriously, 1 out of every 50 people say, "hi, how are ya?" And check out the Blue Blaze Cafe... surprisingly good food in such a small town. Burger is dee-lish! OH and one last thing! I came for Trail Days but ended up staying a whole month. I pretty much have the whole place to myself, too! It's super relaxing and sorta nestled behind a quiet little neighborhood street. The walk into town is about 15-30 min depending on how fast or where you want to go. It's a pleasant, safe, and pretty walk. I wish there were more parks like this all over. I have a 22ft sprinter van conversion, by the way.

The owners were so kind and helpful - we didn't know what else to do in town, and they pretty much laid out our weekend for us, with great suggestions for a local brewery with a trivia night, great restaurants, and a couple sights to see in town. Also reasonably priced, which is, of course, a plus! Highly recommend - just loved!!! :)

Paula was our hostess and she was wonderful. She greeted us upon arrival, gave us a quick but thorough tour, offered us cold drinks, and let us be. She cooked a wonderful breakfast in the morning. We were staying for only one night but wish we had more time to enjoy the inn and surroundings. We thought the inn was a GREAT value for the money. We would have spent more at a standard hotel by the highway. The inn was way more relaxing, quiet and peaceful than our other options. The inn was very well decorated and did not have too many throw pillows! Our deck looked out over the river and we feel asleep listening to the river. We did not realize that there were other guests at the inn. We had all the peace and quiet we needed. I highly recommend talking to Paula about the best way to get to the inn. We planned to arrive before dark but we fell behind schedule. We relied on our smart phones but lost service coming in along some very rural roads from the north. It was a fun but crazy nighttime drive along the N. Fork River Road until we found the inn. I should have printed out a map! The inn has WiFi and was in range for our Verizon phone service. The inn has a big man cave, music room, hot tub, and lots of other amenities that we plan to enjoy when we return.

That turned out to be true: I was given the Green Room, which overlooks Cherokee National Forest, and each morning Joni made some of the best food I ate on my whole trip. That being said, about 24 hours after I arrived, I overheard the owners having a conversation in which they both voiced their disdainful views of the LGBTQ+ community. As a gay person traveling alone in this remote, isolated area, I felt shocked and terrified. It brought back all the painful feelings and memories I felt as a gay kid growing up in TN and reminded me why I had to leave the South in order to feel safe. It took all my strength to get through to the next morning so I could leave. Joni and Bill, I appreciated your hospitality, but I was very hurt by your words. I pray you will reconsider your views about my community after meeting me. We are everywhere, we are human beings, and we deserve respect the same as anyone else.

I always wanted to spend a night in the Alpine, but having grown up a mere twelve miles from here,…read morethere was no need to. But my partner and I just returned from a trip that included two nights at what I believe is now Abingdon's oldest motel, and we were quite charmed. The Alpine consists of about twenty rooms fanning out from a central office. The Swiss couple who built the place in the early Sixties named it for the landscape they had left, and indeed its hilltop perch near old U.S. 11 leading into the town of Abingdon makes it a very pretty site with views of Virginia's tallest mountains. The motel grounds are nicely landscaped, great for picnics or just watching the sun rise and set, and a haven for birds. Hard to believe that down the hill from the Alpine are the full complement of chain motels, eateries, gas stations, and Interstate 81 (north to Roanoke, south toward Knoxville, TN). We were aware that a superhighway exists down there, but the noise was not obtrusive. As others have said, the rooms are large and solid -- gave me a shock to see how standard motel rooms have shrunk since about 1980. Very clean rooms, solid, comfortable, modern. I have about two-and-a-half complaints about the Alpine that kept me from giving it five stars: (1) the phone in my room didn't work (this may not matter much to folks who use their cell for everything). (2) The lone soft-drink machine was broken . . . plenty of ice, but no sodas at all. I ran across a motel a few years ago with the same problem, and the office simply sold us soft drinks. (3) The "Continental" breakfast was meager, mostly coffee and mini-muffins. Even so, and at this price, the Alpine is still a "find"! For those who enjoy a full breakfast, a Cracker Barrel and a Huddle House are right on the way to I-81. It would be wrong of me not to add that Abingdon is home to the venerable Barter Theater, a legitimate performance venue that is the 'State Theater of Virginia.'

We planned this trip as our first anniversary weekend to get away from the chaos of everyday life and it was every bit of what we needed. Unlike other B&Bs, Scott and Loren's home offers a secluded and private setting where you can enjoy the grounds without having to tiptoe around other guests or wait for a good spot on the porch to open up. It offers a level of comfort and seclusion not easily found elsewhere. Their property is amazing with gardens throughout and a quietness you cannot find at other B&Bs. They are incredibly welcoming to their home and go out of their way to make you feel appreciated. While we were secluded from civilization, the home itself offered all of the amenities you could ever need. We especially enjoyed exploring the books on the shelves, sitting on the porch, looking at the many species of trees and plant life, and perhaps best of all Scott's French Toast breakfast. I cannot stress enough just how wonderful our stay was and how accommodating they were to our last-minute changes. We are deeply appreciative for their hospitality and every little touch they put in to make our stay a memorable one. We will definitely be back for future stays.
