During the planning process for our event, there were some employment transitions that initially made me concerned for the numerous requests our staff had made, however Tanya, Willie, Lisa and team all went above and beyond to ensure that our experience was great. We rented the ballroom for a meeting and numerous rooms, and everyone on our staff had nothing much good things to say about their weekend at the Martha. Breakfast was amazing both mornings I was able to enjoy it, and the complimentary evening port was a nice touch. I hope to come back and enjoy a stay without the work duty responsibilities- as I didn't get to partake in the spa, pool/jacuzzi or grounds. But next time!

We were allowed to wander the public areas, but the front desk refused to allow us to look into any vacant rooms, not even one. Which is unusual considering the reviews and their pricing and do I want to stay for 3 nights at $350 ish per night when I'm concerned about the mixed reviews without being able to see what I'm renting. Nevertheless, walking the halls, the rooms being service had their doors open and we could glance in as we passed by. The inn is grand, for sure. The library and fireplaces are very welcoming in atmosphere, decor and interesting artifacts and such. However, it is unlikely that we would choose to stay here for more than one night, the rooms were not "wowing", especially as compared to the grandeur of some of the public rooms. So we will give it a try, but for this trip, our VRBO is more than satisfactory.

The house has been owned by the same family for decades, and their care of it shows. The bathrooms are small, but when you consider the rooms were never intended to have them, they did well. There are only 4 rooms, so there's never a crowd. The breakfast was wonderful. Lighter fare, in 2 courses. The first fresh fruit, with a Swedish cream or a fresh lime sorbet. The second was an egg soufflé with fresh vegetables one day, with rolls and apple butter bread. The second, a bread pudding with great sides. Their rates are very comparable to other B&B's and hotels in the area.

I went in and talked with them about it, they said they would reverse them and gave a receipt showing the reversals. Next morning same thing again with the charges and mess in the elevator. The bed was comfy... the carpet needs to go it's dirty and smells, the bathtub looked like someone had shat in it and smeared it down to the drain. The doors were peeling from something chewing on them. We bought shower shoes so we wouldn't have to have bare feet in the bathtub which turned out to be dirt on the bottom of it. We also wore them around the room because of how dirty the carpet was.The room was musty and dank feeling. It's a very outdated hotel and the pictures on Travelocity do not show the real deal. My key card stopped working and I had to get a new one the guy at the desk didn't ask for any id or anything other than the room number when he gave me new card, I'd never seen him before. Very scary! We didn't eat there because of the smell from the elevator every morning. Couldn't use the stairs with no light to avoid the elevator. Checkout was insane because of the reversals and holds on my card. The cleaning people were discussing what they do in peoples rooms when they go in to clean them, I don't think we were supposed to hear that conversation. I took pictures of what was in my suitcase before we let them in to clean.Overall we will never go back and would not recommend. It was a dated building with AC that kind of did the job, if loudly. The suite I was given was quite large and had a jacuzzi tub. There were some cleanliness issues that weren't huge but weren't a great sign either. I will say that they had a small business center that was clutch, but a modest breakfast that I skipped.

Our visit was 21-23 SEP, in town to enjoy the VA Creeper Rail to Trail. Our room was clean, in fact the whole property inside and out was practically spotless. The breakfast was well stocked each morning, good choices for a healthy robust meal to fuel long rides. We had the pool to ourselves each afternoon, it was spotless and just "warm" enough to be refreshing and restorative to our old bones. The daytime desk manager was delightful! She was engaging, and informative about the area, great resturant picks. They made a conference room available to store our bikes rather than having to lug them up to the room (but they were okay with that as well had we chosen to do so).
