White Birches Inn

A Disappointment. We've stayed at many bed & breakfasts and…read morethis was the first time we were disappointed with our choice. The pictures on the website were obviously old, probably when they first opened. When we noticed the For-Sale sign at the entrance I started to have my doubts. Apparently, the owners turned their home into the B&B about 15 years ago and may have made some alterations at that time but it can use some current upgrading. Our shower was smaller than an old phone booth and would not be comfortable for anyone bigger than an average teenager. There were rules for using the tub and shower I guess due to plumbing issues and when I went to plug in my phone charger by our bed there was an extension cord with other things plugged in and the lamp flickered. The owners/ innkeepers were too involved in conversations and at times somewhat rude and condescending. Our first morning breakfast with no other guests at the table was good but when I asked for decaf coffee I was looked at as if I was some-kind of an alien and told how people who drink decaf never finish their coffee and don't understand why they drink decaf. Well I have a serious allergy to caffeine but I guess that was irrelevant. Our second day breakfast was also good and thankfully there were other guests which limited the innkeeper's involvement in conversation. It was also the first time we were not given a room key which was strange. The positives are that it was a convenient location close to town and the grounds were nice with a nice porch and yard. Bottom line after reading some of the previous reviews I should have paid more attention to the bad reviews. This is not a place we would return.

From the owner: White Birches Inn is the only bed & breakfast in Abingdon, VA that can offer you a king-size bed,…read morein-room fireplace, oversized whirlpool tub, and a private walk-in tiled shower. Our boutique inn, which is a Virginia Green Lodging inn, offers personalized service and luxurious accommodations and creates a wonderfully inviting alternative to typical hotel lodging. Though most of the furnishings are English or American antiques, there is a compelling mix of periods. Many of the pieces are museum-worthy: An Eighteenth-Century Norwegian upholstered chair and a Nineteenth Century Biedermeier secretary share space with Picasso lithographs and Russian Iconistry. The collection spans centuries and countries of origin yet reflects a consistent refined aesthetic.

We recently visited Abingdon for the first time this past weekend and really enjoyed our stay at…read moreCreeper's End Lodging. Originally, I wanted to book A Tailor's Lodging, intrigued by the Abingdon tourist site's description of the B&B. However, I learned that it was already booked to capacity. The proprietor recommended his sister's business, Creeper's End instead, and that's how we ended up at this colonial style unit. Creeper's isn't quite a B&B because there's no second B. You get the bed but not the breakfast. However, they do offer complimentary snacks and beverages (Cheez-its, pretzels, Coke, etc.). Despite not offering the usual breakfast meal associated with a B&B, Creeper's End left absolutely nothing to be desired. I was so delighted by the spotless, amazingly clean room that we ended up getting. Creeper's End may be one of the cleanest places I've ever stayed at in all my years of traveling. The bathroom was so spic and span I almost hesitated to use it. The owner supposedly went to Williamsburg to bring back some of that colonial touch to her lodging, and she did a great job of it. The various units surrounding a lovely courtyard were built to resemble colonial-era housing. The interiors are beautifully decorated with colonial-inspired furnishings and furniture, though not so thematic that it seemed outdated, stiff, or kitschy. I loved details like the luxurious plush bath towels, definitely high-quality, and the nice Samsung flatscreen installed smack in the middle of the room. The freshness of the linens are also a definitely plus. They also have wi-fi, which had a decent speed for most of our stay. The service is also really prompt and professional. The owners are especially trusting, not requiring a deposit and usually leaving the rooms unlocked for guests! Cash or check is preferred, though... As mentioned in the last review posted, one drawback of staying here is that it's pretty close to the train tracks and you can hear the train like it's sneaking up behind you. Thankfully, the train seemed largely inactive at night...or maybe we're just sound sleepers. In either case, this is definitely something to consider if you want to stay here. However, this is honestly my only complaint, and I don't know whether the proprietor could have purchased a similar area away from the train tracks to do what she wanted (a colonial cluster of houses facing an interior courtyard). Before I forget, Creeper's End is at the end of the Creeper's End Trail (30 miles), a favorite of hikers and bikers, hence the name. If you're the outdoorsy type, I think this may be your best option in the area. Abingdon as a whole is one of the most pleasant cities I visited during my vacation to Southwest Virginia, so if you plan on visiting the Tri-Cities, this might also be a great option.
