We took a road trip today to the mountains prompted by a post that appeared on FB mentioning what a great restaurant this was. The drive was beautiful, not a cloud in the sky only Carolina Blue! We started with the Trout Dip, hubby had the grilled salmon with grits and cucumber salad and I had the grilled trout with mashed potatoes and green beans. We were not disappointed and we will be back but maybe we will start with dessert next time since we didn't have room for it on this visit. The waitstaff was friendly, the ambience was welcoming and we were pleasantly surprised with our check. Thank you The Tin Trout for a great start to my Mother's Day weekend. read more

Perfect place to stop in for lunch after a day in the mountains. Right up the road from Linville hiking trails and Linville cave. Large menu and had great specials on the day we stopped in. I had the smash burger which had a super tasty bacon jam. We also had fried oysters for the table which were delicious. read more

We drove about 30-45 minutes to get there and were pleasantly surprised by the service and hospitality. The food was amazing but my fiancé ordered the smoked trout for dinner which was incredibly small, a kids meal portion. It came with one small filet, a smattering of fries, and a coleslaw for $17. If we had known these were not dinner portion sizes, we would have ordered two entrees for him. I got the grilled trout and while the fish was fresh and delicious, it was a little bland. The grits were 10/10 and green beans unremarkable. They brought out house pickles and we ordered a cornbread to start, which was superb with the hot honey they brought on the side. Overall we liked this place but probably will not return due to the portion sizes. read more

We saw the restaurant had a great score on Yelp but we were 50 minutes away. We made the drive and I have to say out was well worthwhile. The trout dip starter was excellent -- super creamy. I had the gochujang ribs which were a special -- excellent flavor. We were stuffed but went for the ooey gooey cake -- also wonderful. This is an instant favorite. We'll be back. read more

Tiffany and Co. would have leased this town like it did many of the mines in this area because this place is a GEM! I can see why everyone recommended it, and we saw many of the same cars parked outside every day. The service seemed to be stretched both times we went, but it was still an enjoyable experience. Skillet Cornbread- Small skillet of cornbread covered in butter and hot honey. Very fluffy cornbread, flavorful, and Crumbley. Carolina Poutine - The flavors were delicious. The fries were a little soggy, and the curds were more melted than I would have expected. The flavors themselves were delicious and rich. Crossnore Corn Hushpuppies- The Hushpuppies were the sleeper. Local corn, crispy and hot, with a wonderful a pickled veggie kind of topping served on the side and called "chow chow" Shrimp & Grits - The best shrimp and grits I've had to date. The grits are ground from corn from the next town over. The Shrimp were cooked wonderfully, the veggies were fresh, and the rich buttery sauce really completed it. I unfortunately always left too full to complete a meal with a dessert. But everything sounded great on the list. If you're within an hour of here, put this place on your list, and get there early. read more

Headed home from NC and found this sweet little place along the way. SO good!!! Absolutely thrilled with this place and we will be back. The smoked trout dip was fabulous, as was the Smoked Trout Platter and the ribs! We finished everything off with their ooy-gooy cake and ice cream. Delish!!! And, our waiter was amazing. It started to pour when we were eating outside. He still came out in the rain and also packed up our dessert for us with drinks to go. Such a great experience! Even with the rain. lol read more

Cute spot and friendly service. Hubs and I stopped in for dinner and opted to share the trio of spreads and trout platter. The food came out quickly. The trio of spreads include pimento cheese, trout, and blue cheese. The blue cheese was by far our least favorite. It was melted blue cheese served cold. The pimento cheese was okay, didn't have too much spices that we come to expect with pimento cheese. The trout spread was by far our favorite. It had a hint of spice/heat. All spreads have scallions garnished on them. We shared the trout platter and they were kind enough to split it up for us. The trout was delicious and well smoked. It came with coleslaw that had a mayo base. A lot of fries also came with the platter. Overall, I would probably have gotten one of the special entrees as there are far more interesting sides that came with those, including collared greens and mac and cheese. Service is friendly and welcoming. There is a small parking lot around back. The restaurant also offers local goods for sale towards the front. read more

What a find! We hiked the nearby Linville Falls earlier in the day with my daughter and her husband who were visiting from KC. After the hike, we were famished and stumbled upon this rare gem. I cannot wait to go back! Everyone was so pleasant and the food was beyond tasty! It should be renamed The TASTY Trout! There's a quaint little gift shop as you enter with local art, prints, souvenirs. The restaurant is set just off the road and a babbling creek runs right by it. So cute and welcoming. Hostess was so pleasant and we were seated right away. The menu was pretty expansive for such a small place - and it had something for everyone. Trout is the main theme, so I ordered the fresh (smoked) Trout salad (see photos). I devoured it. Highly recommend. Photo doesn't do it justice. Fresh baby greens, perfect type and amount of dressing. Read the attached description....! So good! Yum yum yum. Son in law ordered a shrimp Po boy and it looked delicious, which he said it was. Daughter got a wedge salad and husband ordered trout plate. Everyone was quite happily satiated! We also ordered the poutine fries - as an appetizer - and they were also prepared perfectly! I just wish this restaurant was closer to home - but please consider it if you're out in the area, going to or from Linville Falls or the winery that is also nearby! What a gem! We ran across the Tin Trout as we were meandering around the area and had no idea what to expect but knew that if the parking lot was full it had to be good. You're greeted by a cute entrance and a friendly hostess. We had to wait a couple of minutes but no big deal. Our server was super friendly and the service was great. I love a place that has a good daily specials board. Everything sounded delicious and as good as the chicken and waffles sounded I had to try the trout, after all, it's what is special about the area. They bring a complimentary serving of pickled cucumbers packed with flavor. I knew this was a good indication that the rest of the meal would be tasty. We started with a cup of corn chowder served piping hot, which was a blessing on this cold day, with a huge handful of saltine crackers. The chowder was delicious and very creamy, with potatoes and some veggies added to the mix. It was almost like the inside of a chicken pot pie without the chicken. Following the chowder was their smoked trout pasta carbonara which was out of this world and rich in flavor. Always check for thier specials on the board and make sure that they are open for the season before you head over. You wont be dissapointed. read more

We came based on the reviews. We almost left when there wasn't a parking spot available off the road. Then we realized there was another parking lot behind the restaurant. So glad. We waited a few minutes to be seated. But from then in service was fast, friendly and the food was hot and delicious s we ordered the grilled trout. It was so tender, buttery and hot. Loved every bite! The grits were great too, not too creamy, but just the right amount. The collards were a bit undercooked, but they tasted so good I didn't mind. Well I don't stop in Crossnore, too much, because I'm usually on my way to Newland or something, if I go that way at all, the Tin Trout is a neat little spot, family-owned, friendly, interesting and tasty. My second time here, so here is my review: While the restaurant lies adjacent to a small but pretty feeder creek, you can't see it while dining, just when you stand up, or from one of the two umbrella tables outside. Friendly staff, tasty food that is DEFINITELY not the standard foods service generic stuff. Today, i got the duck wings, deep fried, and super tasty! Wifey got the trout special and loved it! We had an FGT appetizer with a light "hot honey" (which they sell by the bottle, too). Surprisingly light, tasty and perfectly done. My only complaints are, some of the extras aren't too terribly exceptional. For example, I got the collard greens which were good, but they didn't have any really good sauce, so I just had a little bit of balsamic vinegar; also, the coffee was OK and the cream was barely enough to lighten the coffee, almost the way I like. But I definitely like the place, and will return as often as I think about it. read more

I was here with my family 2 years ago and I hate to admit the quality & service was excellent the first time. This time, the quality seemed diminished and while the service staff were friendly everyone seemed in a hurry ... zipping away before we could ask for things. The wings were great. The meatloaf, the smoked trout & the fried fish (both fish were very small portions) and were all just 'so-so'. Disappointing at these prices. Not sure of their secret but I've had southern grits all my life but these were great. Food was delicious, great service, easy to get to and park. I've been driving past The Tin Trout for months and remarking to myself that I HAD to try this restaurant--it just looked SO inviting and the thought of fresh trout beckoned. Yesterday I decided to take the Beautiful Wife out for a lunch date after I'd picked her up at the Spa at Eseeola Lodge in Linville (open ALL year, not just for summer visitors.) We were SO FAR from disappointed! The inside's a cozy, home-like set up of at least three separate dining areas, and you're greeted at the Maîtresse Domo's desk with sweet Southern charm and escorted to your choice of any open seat anywhere that you'd like. Our server, Heidi, was delightfully warm, welcoming, and professional without being too formal. She offered the menus and brought the blackboard specials to our table--where we could see them. She was at the ready to answer any questions in her lovely manner, and patience was her forté--we had no idea what we wanted yet. Drinks were offered to give us time, and the coffee that we ordered had a wonderfully rich flavor and was righteously belly-warming (it was pretty raw outside.) Reading over the menus there were a few things that beckoned immediately. However, the blackboard specials silently reminded us to look there too. Choices made, I jumped at a chance for a long-time favorite of mine: Shrimp & Grits, while Judy selected the Grilled Trout, with roasted Brussels Sprouts and Mashed 'taters. Our appetizer was a cornbread skillet with melted pepper jelly to pour over the top--and it was a perfect start. That had us ready and waiting--but we didn't wait long despite the restaurant having a fairly busy lunch crowd. There just aren't sufficient superlative adjectives to use in describing the meals--which we had to share (unwritten rule in our house.) Each was just a perfectly prepared explosion of flavors. My Shrimp and Grits? Soft, moist shrimp of decent size, Andouille sausage, red onions, peppers, and flawless consistency grits to absorb the mouth-watering sauce seasoned in perfect proportion. The Grilled Trout was--it seemed--minutes from still-swimming, and prepared to perfection. The brussels sprouts melted away on your tongue as you savored them, and the mashed potatoes were creamy as home. We requested brown gravy--which had a delicious touch of what tasted like BBQ sauce in exactly the right amount. We LOVED our afternoon date at The Tin Trout, and look forward to visiting again soon--dinner seems like a great choice. The menu has much that I need to work through with pleasure because The Tin Trout is a repeat-to-eat type of restaurant: the type that we find is rare and wonderful to discover by near-accident. The service was outstanding, our server, Jason, was very attentive and very friendly. the food was delivered to the table surprisingly fast, the fried green tomatoes were amazing, the chicken was fried perfectly to top my waffles, my wife had the trout cooked beautifully, and we agreed that the collards were very close to my personal recipe. It is a little over an hour from our home, but talking with fellow diners, we were told they have the best scallops they had ever eaten, and this couple live 90 minutes from us. If they are willing to travel 2 1/2 hours to dine there, then we will definitely go back to try those scallops. read more

Divided it up between the 4 of us to save room for the main course. Delish! I had their Trout with bacon green beans and a sweet potato as sides. Really good. Some of the best trout I've had in a long time. One of our group made the mistake of asking about the gooey cake and ice cream. OMG That's something that should be divided up and shared. For lunch I had the fried chicken sandwich (grilled) with a sweet potato. Both were delicious. Don't really understand the great reviews to be honest. First of all we waited 45 minutes to be seated. Second we had no idea they didn't have drinks so couldn't even get one while waiting. The dips were good but served with little packages of Wrapped saltines of all things. Very weird to not have nice pita chips or something? Then we waited forever for our food which was mediocre at best. $17 for a TINY piece of smoked trout. And Salmon was way overcooked. Maybe an off night but I just don't get it. read more
