I'm surprised this place is still around! Golden Corrals are franchised, and I'm sure there are…read moreprobably decent ones somewhere else in the country that may be similar to Hometown Buffet. BUT this one ain't it! There were a handful of items that were decently edible like mashed potatoes and gravy. The salad bar was also alright. It's difficult to mess up chopped lettuce mix because it only requires opening a bag or container and pouring the contents into the bin. Fried chicken was fine as long as you are able to get a piece or two. I noticed if you come in later in the evening, the food is not replenished so you are stuck with bottom of the bin caked on dry remnants. Here are the highlights: the server bringing the drinks and busing tables was doing her best to be happy and welcoming. One of the cooks was very courteous and also did her best to anticipate customer needs. They get two thumbs up! Now for the fun part: The clam chowder was too salty and had an aftertaste of old dirty towel, promising a fitting end to my evening with a bad tummy ache. The cook making the steak didn't seem to care about communicating a single word with the customers. Her sole purpose was to repeatedly flip something that looked like meat and point to a bin full of burned protein hockey pucks. I noticed how the line of hungry patrons grew with eager anticipation as she stopped flipping and started attempting to slice. As each diner finally walked away with something on their plate, she was free to disappear in the back to probably make more clam chowder. I watched a couple seated near me with steak on their plate. Husband was breaking a sweat trying to slice a piece while his wife was busy trying to gracefully eject something inedible from her mouth. Now on to the pinnacle of the meal - dessert time. There wasn't much left, so I chose a slice of pecan pie. It looked promising, like something you could pick up at the local grocery store, but that's where any similarity ends. It tasted old and stale, like it was made from expired corn syrup found at the bottom of the moldy basement. The soft serve ice cream machine was screaming like an exit door alarm every time someone pulled the arm to coax out some frozen ice milk. Then I spotted the highlight of the evening. I didn't think it was possible to mess up jello, but heck you learn something new everyday. I captured that masterpiece in a photo. Sadly, the owner of this location really needs to put many improvements in place. People do enjoy going to buffets and truly miss Souplantation and HomeTown Buffet. Golden Corral has the potential to fill this gap. It is in a good location anchored by Target with lots of parking to serve a busy neighborhood in oceanside. It also has a few employees who still care to do a good job. So please take the good location and good staff and make this Golden Corral a worthy business for hungry patrons looking to spend money at a place with quality food and variety.

The staff was on it when it comes to clearing our table. They were efficient and friendly, that's about it. We went on Sunday lunch, arrived around 1ish. It wasn't packed, but a lot of containers were empty. Steak. They didn't have a consistent person there, at times people just waited until someone showed up. They also gave super rare meat. The outside was nicely charred, but the inside, pure red. Unfortunately, the attendant lady making it didn't speak English and luckily, a gentleman waiting with us was able to translate for us. We were asking for medium. It was still given to us super rare. Also, it was pretty much unsanitary or cross contamination as they used the same tong to grab raw meat, grill the meat, then put the meat on our plate. I'm talking about she's using the same tong mid way grabbing raw meat and flipping and giving us our steak. Food signage was all over the place. About 50% (or more) was off. So don't even bother reading those, just assume what you're grabbing. Everything tasted bland or generic, like no name brand food just got heated and put on the platter, same for the salad items. Like I mentioned, you go here to get full. We got buy one get one free meal, so essentially, for $11 per person, it's a great deal, but I'd never pay full price for them. I'd rather go to a Chinese Buffet and enjoy some fried rice. I knew what I was expecting in terms of quality. I would have probably given them more stars if they didn't have so many empty stations (which sat empty for a long time). Oh, they eventually had ham, but oh man, that was super dry! I did enjoy their pina colada slurpee, fried chicken, and chocolate covered dessert .

First impression even before ordering a veg breakfast scramble at the front counter: the peeps who are employed here love (not like) working here. Miles of smiles and genuine engagement with customers is not something you can teach so it says everything about the owners that they love their staff and hire those that match their vibe. And that vibe is infectious and inspiring in a world where most seldom if ever look up from their phones. Ordering was a breeze, service was upbeat and the extra crisp I asked for on the breakfast potatoes was a crunchy delight. Great menu covering all day food cravings from omelettes, pancakes, fish tacos, burgers and inventive coffee choices and fresh pastries were on display and inviting. Floor to ceiling windows, cool light 'n breezy tunes, indoor and outdoor seating equally easy on the eyes and ears. I live in Carlsbad so it's an easy commute but I would drive from Alpine or the border to savor a moment or two of pure gratitude for this amount of happiness and love served on a white dinner plate. You thank you Cafe Topes. Consider me a regular.

This place gets packed but don't let that scare you off from how quick and efficient the food comes out and how well this place works. The workers are all so sweet and friendly and the fact that they go above and beyond for their furry friends is even sweeter. The food for starters since I'm Gluten Free, is a huge hit. From GF pancakes to bread options and sometimes pastries, It's a hit for me everytime. The coffees and the occasional mimosa are also a great compliment for the food. And if you're lucky enough to get your hands on a cinnamon roll, don't hesitate. Cafe Topes is my go to place at the moment!!

We ordered a pastrami sandwich, Philly cheesesteak, a kids burger combo, kids chicken tender combo, kids corn dog combo, 2 shakes, an order of fries and order of onion rings. This is how you get to $102 for takeout for 2 adults and 3 kids. Shakes alone were $9 EACH! The prices listed on their own website are outdated. Seriously, if we had known that we would be spending over $100 for takeout we would have skipped this place.

What we ended up getting was parboiled meats that didn't even have a hint of being on the grill and it only had any flavor because I dipped every bite in salsa. Also the atmosphere of the food hall was chaotic and noisy with kids running all over the place. Seating was first come first serve and the place was packed so we had to circle around a couple of times before finding a table that was just vacated. The one positive was the people working the hall and clearing the tables were helpful and friendly. Honestly, do yourself a favor and skip this place and go further south on Paseo Norte Rd to the Green Dragon Tavern just on the other side of Palomar Airport Rd. The food was so much better and the atmosphere of the place was so relaxing and made the entire dining experience so pleasant.
