Check out their google reviews for a more honest one. I hired them to fix my computer, it took them a few visits to fix it and their technician was not even certified. No I am not a tech who did a bad job, I am a tech who had to wait months to get paid from you and had to get a third party involved in order to get paid like other reviewers said. read more

These guys saved my life. I had a massive presentation and my computer wouldn't start, it looked to be a hard drive failure. I'm knowledgable with computers and I had dreadful feeling I was doomed. These guys just saved me hundreds of hours of work and lots of stress! The problem: I own a retail store in Boston and my point-of-sale system was supposed to be auto-saving a backup file every day to Dropbox. It turns out that even when I manually backed-up the file it was not overwriting the existing file so when my hard drive crashed on Sunday I was devastated to realize my last valid back-up was from over 1 year ago. My reaction: I tried a couple things with my moderate knowledge of PCs to salvage the file. No luck. I considered more complicated procedures that would probably destroy the hard drive if I did them incorrectly. I tried contacting a large company to help me fix the issue but they didn't answer their phone. Then I found Geek Choice online and realized they were local and experienced in data recovery. Wednesday morning I called Geek Choice. Joe answered the phone and was very polite. I dropped the PC off with him at 10:30AM and was preparing myself for the worst. He obviously couldn't make any promises but I could tell he was confident in how to attack the dead hard drive. At 1PM Joe called to tell me he located the "Holy Grail" file that I needed and would transfer it along with some other files that I might need to an external hard drive. I was ecstatic. He showed up at my store to hand deliver the files and my company was back up and running by 2PM. Getting the file back was the main goal and Geek Choice handled the situation perfectly. I would be writing a glowing review regardless of the outcome because Joe was professional and courteous from the start. I didn't have the greatest experience here. The guy was very communicative and helpful. My hard drive died, i went to him and he said he would need to charge me $700 to look at it in a "clean room" and determine if my data was salvageable. He also said this was the cheapest anyone would offer in which he was correct. For diagnosing this problem I shelled over $75. I took my hard drive to my dad's friend in an attempt to spare myself this ridiculous charge. He took care of it in 2 days for less than $50. He said he simply connected an external cable to the hard drive and bypassed the casing and it worked great. Now these guys are nice, but they should be able to do what my dad's friend did in less than a few hours and not charge me $75 just for telling me I have a problem. read more

Recently, a freak accident introduced my cousin's laptop to a whole lotta Goldschlager. I immediately took responsibility, because I am a person of great integrity and also my hands smelled like cinnamon. Therefore, I really wanted to make sure that I got the best possible fix for her. Everything about Geek Choice was fantastic. I got a coupon for $30 off! Also, Joe was great to work with. He gave me an idea of what he expected would be needed, which was a new keyboard and a little clean up; he didn't try to fleece me, even though clearly, if he'd said it needed new tires, I would have wailed right over to Goodyear. Even better, while Geek Choice only orders parts from trusted vendors, I was hoping to use replacement parts that my friend can get on the cheap. I was shy to ask, but Joe was super cool about it! He only charged for labor at a very reasonable rate! I fully anticipate needing frequent help with electronics, and these guys are now my go-to! read more

I know enough about tech to get myself in trouble and that's exactly what I did. I set up a number of repeaters and routers and had so much going on none of my devices could connect to the internet. I emailed geek choice at 7pm and they called back the next morning and had a tech there that afternoon. He correctly identified the problems, cleaned up my mess and got me up and running. Geek Choice is a great choice if you need help with your computer and they have always come through for me over past 5 years. On one occasion, when my operating system wouldn't load, I walked into their Beacon Hill Office at 4:30pm, 30 minutes before closing, and technician (GEORGE) stayed late and worked on my computer for 3 hours until he got my system up and running. On another occasion when I was having computer issues, another technician (RAYMOND) came to my office on his day off to work on my computer. These guys are great; very professional, knowledgeable, and honest. Do not use this service. They do not stand behind their work, and the office worker lied to me by saying they would come for a follow up but they no showed. The problem with my audio system worsened a few weeks after they serviced it, and he argued with me about coming back for a limited free follow up after I already paid them $280 for a problem that was not fixed. The worst about this business is that he lied. read more

UPDATE! Okay, I rescind my angry remarks. Someone at Geek Choice called me to apologize for the mishap, and to offer a free repair to make up for the printer catastrophe. I had new cable service and a COMCAST modem and NETGEAR router that didn't work. Spent chunk of time on weekend trying to get internet service running using the manuals and CDs... no luck. Called Geek Choice since they were already highly rated, and recently rated, on YELP and had a Service Guy fix my setup the next day. As a bonus, these guys called me ahead of time to tell me where their Tech was and that he may be a little late for my appt -- hey stuff happens. They were very courteous and professional. Their price was comparable to the other Big Store Service I was going to use, and I didn't have to wait 2 weeks for an appt. Thanks Geek Choice! read more

I had trouble with my DVD drive on my laptop, so after reading a review for Geek Choice on Yelp, I decided to give them a call. They charged me $50 to send an engineer to my place (which is literally across the Common from their home base) and $25 for every 15 minutes, with a half hour required. Never mind that my DVD drive decided to work fine when the engineer came, but he didn't understand what the problem with my computer was. He couldn't tell if I was running Windows Vista or Windows 7 (it's not hard to tell the difference) and then mentioned later that Windows confused him. My engineer also came much earlier than expected, catching me completely off guard. After nothing being wrong, I was charged $100 for someone who didn't know how to work Windows 7, and had no idea what Pro Tools was and what it had done to my computer. Complete waste of time and money. read more

I live on their block. I called and asked them, as a favor to a neighbor, to sell me a tube of thermal paste, or even to sell me a squirt of it out of any tube of it they happened to have lying around. (Thermal paste is goop that you squirt onto a CPU before installing it on a computer motherboard; something that every tech is going to have on his or her workbench, and a $7.50 tube of it would be enough to to the job I'm doing about 20 times over.) The rep launched into an explanation of the $25 initial diagnosis fee, per hour charges, etc., saying "Bring the system in and we can diagnose it." I said, "So your answer to my initial question is, 'no,' then." He said, "What question?" Me: "Can I get some thermal paste." He: "We don't stock or sell parts." The best analogy I can think of: You spill ice cream on your car seat, and you go into a nearby restaurant and ask, "For a couple of bucks, can I get a take-out cup full of hot water with a squirt of soap in it?" and the host says, "Sorry, we don't sell soap," and you say, "Yes, I understand, but maybe you could hand me a cup and I'll take some soap and water from your restroom and give you a couple of bucks for your trouble," and the host insists, "we don't sell soap." OK, you aren't under any obligation to accommodate me. But it was a pretty simple request; one that would not put you out a bit; one that would even net you a tiny profit. I'm not your competitor; I'm your neighbor. And for sure, now, I'll never be your customer. 2 stars rather than 1, because the business of course didn't cheat or misrepresent or fail to deliver or do any harm. read more

Thinking about getting your computer repaired on a budget? I recommend going elsewhere. Here's why: I called Geek Choice to replace a broken motherboard with a new one I had purchased. The technician they sent was nice, but he was unable to help me, since the replacement board required that I also purchase a new processor. The technician recommended a place (Microcenter in Cambridge) where I could buy a processor and have the repairs done. He then told me that he would see about getting me a discount on the $100 charges Geek Choice wanted for my appointment, since he had not been able to make a repair. Because of that offer, I chose not to use a $25 coupon I had gotten from their brochure. Big mistake. I never heard anything about that discount, and the charges came through on my card. A week and a half later I called Geek Choice to explain my situation. By this point, I'd already had my computer repaired by Microcenter. I'd paid them $60 for the repair, while simultaneously paying $100 to Geek Choice for having recommended Microcenter. Naturally, this seemed a little disproportionate, and I expected Geek Choice to sympathize, offering (at the least) to accept the $25 coupon that I would have used had I not been misled. I spoke with their representative (she was very nice also) and was told that I would be contacted in the future about that discount. I provided my cell phone number and my email address. I never heard from anyone at Geek Choice again. To be clear, I'm not complaining about the personalities of Geek Choice employees. Nor am I calling into question the quality of their services (which I never had the chance to witness). Instead, I'm attacking the atrocious way they do business. Geek Choice's BLATANT DISREGARD for a customer's inquiry is the antithesis of good practice in the services industry. I would have understood if they'd provided a good reason for not giving me a break. But apparently, I ceased being a valued customer once they'd collected their money. I won't be returning to Geek Choice, and will be active in dissuading friends from wasting their own savings on a company that doesn't respect it's customers enough to tell them directly that they can't have a discount. read more

Incompetent! Slow! and Terrible communication! I had a laptop that needed some hardware fixed. They shipped it to California to get it fixed and it didn't come back for TEN WEEKS. The whole time I was calling them and they kept saying how they were still waiting for a part and they would call me back with updates. They promised to call at least 8 times and NEVER called me once. Eventually, I would call and only get the answering machine or being put on hold for 45 minutes. And to top at all off, at the end of 10 weeks, my computer came back STILL BROKEN. I honestly don't know how they stay in business. Don't waste your time or money with them. read more

My computer died on me last week. I was not happy. A quick call to Geek Choice got me my own personal computer nerd scheduled for the very next afternoon. I know nothing about computers so I can't tell you what was wrong or what the guy did to fix it. I do know that he had to replace a part but he had one in his car that was even better then the original one that came with my computer. Plus he helped me remove some unnecessary software that had been slowing my machine down. The guy was polite, knowledgeable and even showed up early. Parts and labor came to $250, but it was well worth it since he did such a good job. Plus, neither the person answering the phone or the tech complained about my location in the parking hell that is the North End. I have had service people do this. Geek Choice even called me on Monday to see if I was satisfied with their service. I am and I highly recommend them. They repair both PC and Macs. read more

UPDATE: BE CARFUL WHEN POSTING A NEGATIVE REVIEW!! I POSTED A NEGATIVE REVIEW ON FACEBOOK AND GEEK CHOICE RETALIATED BY SLANDERING MY CHARACTER AND ACCUSING ME OF BEING ON DRUGS!! Just a fair warning to any potential customer. This place is ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!! NEVER EVER go there to get your phone fixed especially. It is a complete RIP OFF! I had mine fixed and it cost me $150 bucks only for my screen to BREAK the next day. When I brought it back I was treated EXTREMELY rudely and basically told I dropped the phone and there is nothing they will do. EVEN THOUGH THE PHONE WAS NEVER DROPPED - IT HAD BEEN LESS THAN 24 hours since the phone was supposedly "fixed". They had me leave the phone with them for over 1/2 hour only for me to show up and be ignored for 15 minutes and when Matt FINALLY got off the phone, he treated me like a lying second class citizen and basically said "Nothing we can do. I cant PROVE you didnt drop the phone". So much for customer service. If you need to fix your Iphone GO TO THE APPLE STORE!! IT IS WAY CHEAPER and you might actually be treated with some human decency and respect. read more

Great experience! I called on Wednesday night. They were able to do in home service the next night. Chris was professional and friendly - did a great job - and was quick too. I ended up paying about half what other places were quoting me and I didn't have to drop off my computer at the store or wait several days to get it fixed. DO NOT GO HERE!! Geek choice is extremely unprofessional and the technicians are incompetent. I dropped off my laptop at 11am for a quick screen fix and was told it would be $125 and an hour. I called and the technician told me I needed a "new motherboard, screen assembly, screen cable, and screen." I was told there was "a lot wrong with my laptop" and it would cost me over $300 to fix it. I said that all I wanted was my screen fixed and was told I would be called back with another more reasonable quote. Geek Choice never called me back. I had to persistently call to get updates on my laptop. I was constantly told I would have an answer in 5 minutes and that was never the case. It wasn't until 4pm (5 hours later) that an actual estimate and answer. A different computer service company said I only needed the cable fixed and that it would be $115. I came to pick up my computer from Geek Choice and go elsewhere with my business and not only did they still charge me $75 for a diagnostic fee but my computer was reassembled sloppily. The hinge of the laptop was off kilter and they replaced one of the pieces with a lower-grade plastic piece. Furthermore, the other computer company told me I did not need a new "motherboard" or a new screen assembly. read more

You can't reach anyone, they keep on charging your credit card and refuse to refund monies even though they tell you they will, stay away from them...they won't answer the phone, always tell you to call back and generally a very poor company to deal with....the initial challenge wasn't able to be repaired over the phone when told what they needed to do, and they wanted to send someone out to my house....right! I live in Hawaii and they don't have service here!!! read more

This company uses an outside company to farm work out. They charge customers 4x the going rate for service and do not pay thier contractors on time. I do not recommend this company even to my mother. Please save your money and go elsewhere. After searching Yelp (and not realizing there was an enormous amount of terrible 'hidden' reviews) I decided to go with Geek Choice to repair my 2012 macbook air screen. Soon after I took my computer in and the repair had begun I was called and told that the ribbon had been damaged and that it would be another two weeks and possible charge for the ribbon. After some negotiating, I was able to get the charge covered even though it was their fault and my repair would now be delayed. Finally, after weeks of waiting I was able to pick up the computer and I was shocked to see the repair was done with a less than satisfactory job. The screen was scratched and dirty underneath the main cover. Furthermore, tiny pixels were blacked out and and certain areas of the screen were brighter than others. I immediately contacted Geek Choice with pictures and they never returned my emails or calls. The technicians seem under qualified and the customer service here is dismal. I advise you to save your money and choose an actual repair shop over this place. read more

Though this experience was a handful of years ago, I feel compelled to warn others. I lived close by, and dropped off my laptop. After they opened it up and determined that they are not able to fix internals (I wish they told that to me before they opened it up), they not only charged me $100, but they charged a significant "pick up fee" (included in that price - I believe it was $50). I stated that they did not pick up my computer, rather I dropped it off, therefore should not be charged the fee. The guy said "my boss would kill me if I dont charge you that fee." !?!?!? Furthermore, they did not want to perform a very simple fix on my computer (a dab of solder would have fixed the prob) but decided to charge me anyway. The person from their customer relations dept must have been on the job for the 1st day who called me - it was pretty sad. They never offered a refund. Just not smart, guys. read more

I reside in Washington, DC, and services were provided by a contractor in that area. First, Geek Choice did not show up the first 2 or 3 times they were scheduled. Second, the representative was to set up a data transfer from a Mac to an external hard drive. After some time working on this task, he admitted that he was unfamiliar with Mac computers. As a result of his tampering, I was forced to take the Mac to a certified Apple repair service: the GC representative had altered the Mac in a manner which interfered with its normal functioning. Because of this, I had to spend an additional $500 and take significant time off from work to take the Mac to the repair service and pick it up. Third, the GC representative was also contracted to repair a Sony Vio laptop. After working on this unit for awhile, he stated that he could not readily fix the problem. Instead, he suggested that I switch my expensive Sony Vio for a cheaper laptop he had refurbished. He stated that the refurbished laptop was 100 percent functional and that there were no problems with it. In addition, he charged $200 for switching the computers. Not only was I charged for his "work" on the Mac, but he also charged me for his "work" on the laptop as well as charging me for the replacement computer. This amount came to approximately $500. Fourth, I later discovered that the computer he called a comparable unit to my Sony Vio was significantly cheaper. More importantly, the laptop had missing components--namely, a wireless card. Consequently, it could not be readily used with Wi-Fi. I have made numerous attempts to contact a supervisor at Geek Choice. Despite explaining the situation numerous times and receiving assurances that the suitable supervisor would contact me, no one had bothered to do so. It has been several months, and no one has addressed my concerns. read more
