**experience during covid-19 ** This place does not require masks. The good place is they have a good amount of room outside in the shade and they have fans with misters. They didn't even have all the misters on. It was very nice even at 90+ degrees outside. Came here during happy hour and decided to take advantage of the temporary menu. To start off we got some nice tostadas. The red salsa was really good even though it was not spicy at all, the green one I didn't like as it was super watery, and the beans were good. The tacos I got adobada, pork, and beef since they allow me to mix it up. All the tacos are pretty decent, I do have a warning for any people who don't like onions. Ask for no onion as they do have a decent amount on them. Another thing to take into account, since it is a happy hour special it is a small plate. It came with some beans in a bowl, honestly not the best. The purple margarita to my surprise was actually pretty good. I got it cuz that was an odd thing to see. Did not regret my choice! Done with Gecko which been a family favorite since they were located at Gilbert and Guadalupe. Menu prices have gone through the roof and the portions seemed to be smaller with much more of a bland taste. As someone who eats plant-based (avoiding dairy, eggs and meat) I was invited to a dinner at Gecko Grill and after checking out the menu I called the restaurant to clarify some info. First, the bean dip provided with chips has dairy in it, but the regular beans (like a side of rice and beans) does not. Because I had seen a friend order a veggie quesadilla with grilled veggies a while ago, I asked on the phone if I could order a veggie burrito minus the cheese and sour cream, and add in the grilled veggies used in the quesadilla. The guy I talked to said that was totally doable and made it sound like it would be fine. Last night I went with friends and asked the server for the veggie burrito "minus dairy, so no cheese or sour cream" and adding in the veggies from the veggie quesadilla. He looked confused then asked if he could just do the quesadilla with beans minus the cheese and charge me for that. I said that would be fine. What I got was 2 crispy tortillas with buttered corn (!) between them, a few pieces of broccoli, and a few slices of carrot inside. No beans to hold it together. It for sure is the most sub-par meal I have had from a restaurant in a very very long time, and it was $18 plus tax. If you are vegan, plant based, or dairy free for any reason, I would not recommend Gecko. I suppose I could have asked for something simple like a bowl of beans and a tortilla, but a bean/rice/veggie burrito sounded good and didn't sound like an overly-difficult food swap. We stopped in before our movie next door. There was 7 of us and it took less than 10 minutes to be seated. They were pretty busy on taco Tuesday. I ordered the sopes w carne Asada and we also ordered the fish tacos. Both were great huge and delicious. The only down side it the taco plates must of been waiting on the rest of our plates because the rice was cold. It makes me so sad to say that this place has changed. As others have mentioned, prices have gone up exponentially! I could not believe that a mango chicken quesadilla is now $19.99, a quesadilla!!! My usual Gecko Burro is now $14.99 at this location, where at the Morenos location on Gilbert/202 it is still $10.89. But I think the most disappointing factor is the customer service has changed. I remember having such sweet servers when I would dine in the restaurant which made me absolutely love coming in. Ambiance and environment is clean. My kids love the busboy robot! My Strawberry Margarita was $14. Small in size but it did taste good. I shared the Mini beef chimichangas with my mother in law. We liked them. My youngest son had the Chicken Fundido and loved it. My husband had a burrito and it was ok. Had a lot in it except for the beef. My oldest son had the beef & cheese enchilada and loved it. Overall, service was a bit slow. Our food came at different times. They might have been understaffed. Manager took our order and was our server. Everyone helped out which you can tell they have team work. My partner and I decided to dine here on valentine's day and I'm glad we did! There wasn't much customer traffic, so that was a big plus. The service was outstanding! Our server was attentive and was on top of all our requests despite having multiple sections under their name. I had the crab relleno, which was my first time trying it and I am impressed! Visiting Gilbert this is a 5 Star all the way. I personally live the Salmon Taco smothered with Mango Salsa. My son loved the Baja Fish Taco's. My friends strongly suggest the Shrimp Mango Quesadilla, which I've tried before, and it was good.. if your careful with in taking cheese I suggest Salmon, Fish or Shrimp Taco. They add pineapple salsa to the shrimp taco which is a nice different flavor, reminds me of being in Southetn Cali. They even have lettuce wrapped taco which is amazing tasty and healthy .... but Mexican Taco calls for Corn Tortilla if you ask me! Mmmmmm yummy good. Also my son and girlfriends love the generous appetizer 3 dips ( green salsa, red salsa, and bean dip) with chips offered as courtesy when eating inside. The other top menu item is the Tampiquena a Carne asada steak and cheese enchilada with rice and beans guacamole and salsa Fresca... My wife and I have had Gecko Grill on our "check it out" list for years. We had heard really good feedback about Gecko Grill and we finally visited the Gilbert location yesterday. First impressions are lasting. We entered the location and asked to be seated on the patio. We were greeted with a "it will be 5-10 minutes ". It wasn't the short wait that rubbed us the wrong way, but the dismissive looks/attitude from all 3 employees at the front desk. Another couple came in a few minutes after we arrived and received the same "cold, unwelcoming" greeting. They seemed equally perplexed with the attitude. Strike 1 (for the attitude) ! It was 3:00 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and, at best the location was 1/3 full. If you greet patrons, you must have some sense of your surroundings. Asking people to wait for a table when many are clearly available surely should include a friendly explanation for a wait. After a very short wait, the hostess led us to an inside table. We told her we had requested to be seated on the patio. No big deal except she seemed irritated with US for HER mistake. She then pointed towards the door to the patio and said we could sit wherever we wanted to. Again, no big deal except for the irritated/dismissive demeanor. To be honest, we almost walked out at that point. Strike 2 (for the attitude) ! Our server (MacKenzie?) was fantastic. Five stars for her!!! If not for her welcoming and efficient service we would have left. We ordered a couple house margaritas which were pretty darn tasty. FWIW...They have a bit of carbonation but are uniquely good. We had planned to eat a late lunch. However, after seeing the small portions (relative to other mexican restaurants) and the prices being on the high end, we cashed out and went elsewhere. Strike 3 ! The positives were our server and the margaritas. The negatives were the hostess, the relatively high prices, and smaller portions. We arrived at 7:20 pm and put our name in and were told we had a 10 minute wait. We waited for 40 minutes because they forgot about us. When we went to ask, we were told they never put our name down on the list. Then they had the audacity to blame us for that happening and said we had two minutes to order because the grill closes. Well that's not enough time to look over a menu so we got no food and left. The part I have the problem with is they could care less about the mistake and didn't do something to make it right. Some of my favorites are the shredded beef crispy tacos, the chicken mini chimis and their bean dip. The bean dip is SO. GOOD. They give you a small side of it with your chips and salsa but I always get an actual order of it - I think it's $2 or $3 for a good sized cup to share! Their hot salsa is also really good if you enjoy spicy but you have to ask for it. I recently tried their sizzling apple pie and that was a great time. The Gecko Grill is a great little local sit down mexican food joint. Perfect for family outings or a casual evening with a date. The food is good and service is excellent and the out door patio is a home run. I have been to the Gecko several times. Each time I have chose to eat outside on their patio area. It is very nicely done, covered, climate adjusted (misters or heaters) and regularly has live music. My #1 favorite thing about the Gecko is the stellar love ensemble that plays there regularly on Friday and Saturday nights. A truly acoustic soloist accompanied by a great bassist, the music is tasteful and perfectly contexted. I enjoyed the carne asada fajitas and was filled up with all the tasty, fresh ingredients . I also enjoyed their pollo Fundido dish, which is also a winner. I've tried their larges burrito as well. All their dishes seem well done and generously portioned. The staff is attentive and quick to get your order. The prep time is reasonable. They serve a basket of chips with some very tasty salsa options to enjoy while you wait for your entree. The pricing seemed a bit higher for comparable dishes elsewhere, but still within my budget. I will continue to return to the Gecko to enjoy the good food and wonderful music on the weekends. read more

I'll get to the point here - the food is excellent! I have to say that I wasn't expecting much. I have a high bar for Mexican food, and Gilbert isn't exactly the epicenter of culture, so I went in with certain preconceived notions, and I was dead wrong! The beans were creamy and delicious, the salsas were flavorful, and the enchilada sauce tasted homemade. If it's not, keep buying it from wherever you're buying it from, Gecko! The staff was friendly but struggling. The wait staff were all extremely young, and I think the lack of leadership/experience left them frantically trying to keep up with a busy night. They'd halfway bus a table and then leave it for a long time and just seemed to be generally overwhelmed. But they were all very nice. The kitchen staff was absolutely churning out the food, though. So let's start with the negative about this place: I think i hear crickets. There isn't anything negative at all. Moving on to the positive. I was greeted and seated very quickly upon my arrival. Martha was great as a server, she was extremely attentive and helpful. Couldn't ask for a better job making sure that I had everything that I needed. Ordered the gecko omelette and asked for extra jalapeños. They delivered. It came just right. It was very good especially with an extra amount of salsa added on top. The tortillas were extremely hot and fresh and delicious with just a little bit of butter on them. And hashbrowns, whoever talks about hashbrowns? They were the best hashbrowns that I have ever eaten. They have the right amount of spice and buttery taste to it, they were delicious. Never thought I would ever leave a yelp review and mention hashbrowns. They are more just a side to the main course, a filler. But these were very good. From top to bottom restaurant was clean and tidy. Bathroom was good as well, not even a bit of trash on the floor. Definitely recommend this place. read more

It's 8:15.. This place closes at 9. when we got here the room was full of people, as they left they would not seat any new customers at the empty tables. They made us wait for other tables on the other side. They started cleaning and got out the cleaning supplies and the place smelled like Fabuloso instead of mexican food. People came in at 8:10 and wanted to eat here but the workers told them the wait was 35 mins and so they were not taking anymore customers.
