I have been eating at this restaurant for more than 10 years. I followed them from their old location to their current location. It's one of my favorite Mexican restaurants here in the Phoenix Southeast area. This restaurant is located in a strip mall on the south west corner of Greenfield and Baseline. When you enter the restaurant directly in front of you is a counter with a cash register and behind the counter is the kitchen. The decor has a very rustic Hispanic feel. I love the little Tile roof awning they have when you first walk in and throughout the restaurant. There's seating in a room to the right of the counter, in a room to the left of the counter and outdoor seating as well. When the weather is nice, we enjoy sitting outside. They have it warmly decorated with trees and plants, which makes for a very relaxing environment. On our last trip, Juanita was our server and she was fantastic. She paid very close attention to details like ensuring our drinks were filled and when I asked for some extra green salsa for my quesadilla, she quickly brought me enough to finish what I was eating with my dinner plus some to take home for my leftovers. They start you off with chips, salsa, and bean dip. They offered their red salsa which is very good, but I am absolutely in love with their green salsa. So upon request, they will bring you some. Their green salsa has a slight sweet taste to it. I love dipping my chip in the beans and then dipping it into the green salas. There's just something unique about that flavor combination. For dinner I had the Carne Asada quesadilla. I normally get the mango chicken quesadilla, which is absolutely delicious. They also offer it with shrimp. Pretty much any meat they offer on the menu you can get in your quesadilla. This is the first time I tried the carne asada quesadilla and it was fantastic. It came with diced up Carne Asada that was very tender, loads of cheese and guacamole inside. It was really good! My husband got a combo meal that had enchiladas and a chile relleno. He also enjoyed his meal. He ordered his enchiladas Christmas style, which is red and green sauce on top. He said his Chile relleno reminded him of the ones his mom makes. We sat out on the patio for a girls night out and had a great time. The atmosphere was lively and fun while still feeling relaxed enough to sit, chat, and enjoy time together. The food was good, but I would definitely say the drinks were the highlight as they were well made. The service stood, the staff was attentive throughout the night, constantly checking in to make sure we had everything we needed and asking if we wanted anything else. We HAVE loved Gecko over the last 10+ years! Unfortunately the restaurant as a whole has gone downhill, I don't see them staying in business much longer. I know our group of 4 families all said we won't be going back. Went in last night after seeing a movie at FatCats. Walked in at 7pm on a Saturday and the restaurant is practically empty. As a party of 12 we weren't unhappy that there was no wait but we all kept asking ourselves why it wasn't busy. Once seated out on their patio we started realizing why it wasn't busy. They've increased their pricing by at least double! A cheese crisp (appetizer) is $14 and it tasted horrible! My all time favorite fiesta taco tasted totally bland and was tiny. Also it cost $10 for ONE taco. My husband's burrito was ok but for the cost and size he could've had something better and cheaper from Boca just up the street. Also even though our server was nice service was super slow. They couldn't keep up on chips and they didn't bring out all the salsas we had to keep asking for the green. Which tasted nothing like it used to. Sad to say in Az there are so many great Mexican restaurants and Gecko is no longer one of them. read more

My husband and I really enjoyed our meal here! We've eaten at lots of Mexican restaurants all over the country, and this was the first time we've been given THREE dips along with the gratis tortilla chips. Then...they brought us an extra bowl of spicier (hotter) salsa, on request! Service was fabulous - it's so great to see someone who obviously enjoys what they are doing, and is eager to give you a good experience! This place is ridiculous and has the worst customer service. I really can't believe they are still in business. It's a Friday night, they close at 9. I got there at 8:40 and host wouldn't seat me. Said they are not taking dine in customers but I could do a to go order. THATS PURE LAZINESS!!! If you don't want customers a half hour before closing time then change your hours. My order was good, the steak was flavorful and changed the dish significantly from the Pollo version. My wife loved both her selections but she quickly focused on her Menudo. This gave me grazing rights to her Spinach Enchiladas entree. I discovered their version of Elote and my sampling turned into a disappear act. I tried a few bites of the Enchiladas but realized this would become dinner for me since my wife doesn't like leftovers (happy, happy, happy me). Bottom line From ambiance to food this restaurant has it all. Stopped in for some Mexican food. Oh my was delicious. Ordered the crab enchilada. Was very tasty. Came with the rice and beans. Also had a special drink....Strawberry Momtini. I ordered a southwest shrimp burrito. Took 2 bites, and thought it was mushy, flavorless, and gross. Had my husband try one bite to see what he thought of it and he agreed it was gross. Too much cheese, no flavor, soggy. By the time the server returned, at the end of the meal, and asked if I wanted a box, I said I didn't like it. The server said because it was "at the end of the bill" he couldn't do anything about it. The manager came and proceeded to tell me that because "most" of the burrito had been eaten, there was nothing she could do. Mind you, the burrito was still filling up the entire plate. She kept interrupting me and wouldn't even allow me to answer her questions before she would cut me off and start telling me that I was wrong and no one has ever complained before and it was "too late" to do anything about it. She was immediately confrontational and kept arguing with us about the quality of the food and how much was eaten. She said no one has ever complained about the burrito before. And she said she would make up another burrito to "prove" to me that most of the burrito was eaten. #1. The fact that no one else has ever complained about that menu item doesn't mean anything. I was not happy with it and I thought it was gross and I didn't eat it. #2. To offer to make another burrito to prove to me that too much was eaten for her to comp it or give me something else was the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. She would rather argue with a customer and make up another burrito that would just have to be thrown away than apologize for food that I was unhappy with. She argued with us and exhibited THE WORST customer service I have ever seen. She was defensive, rude, and completely unwilling to make an effort on fixing the situation. What is so hard about simply saying, I'm sorry you didn't like it. What would you like us to do? Or you can choose something else off the menu that is the same price or less. She wasn't willing to do that, but she was happy to make up another burrito that I didn't like to compare sizes and then throw it away. So ridiculous. The good? The portions here are decent for a second meal or sharing between two people and the chips paired with the house salsa and queso dip are fire! The outdoor patio area is very nice and lit up with string lights, a beautiful water fountain, and had a vibe like the movie Coco with the cute colorful flags strung across. The not so good? Prices are rather steep considering this is in Arizona. I was expecting to get a lofty-sized Gecko Burro (which is basically a wet burrito with carne asada) for around $15 max but it was closer to $20. And, their horchata was NOT GOOD. It was watered down and not creamy as I was hoping it would be. My family and I went there last night before going to Fatcats to have family fun. I wish we'd have just gone next door for popcorn and mozzarella sticks. We got a vegetarian quesadilla and the veggies were raw and unseasoned. The kids' chicken fingers were dry and generic, which sure. But the salsa tasted like fake smoke. The beans were fine but I paid $4 something for a small side of beans that comes free with the meal. I thought a dip would be bigger or have sauce or something Again, the veggies were so bland. And it was $18! I complained (which I never do) and they gave us &5 off. But $18 for a quesadilla that had raw veggies is actually infuriating. It's not hard to make yummy veggies. 2 stars because the staff was wicked nice. But in a town where there are good Mexican spots every couple miles it's not worth going to. Geckos has really gone downhill in both food quality and service. Came in with a party of four to watch football, and while every TV on the patio was on, they refused to seat us out there--said the patio was "closed." Why advertise as a football spot if you can't even accommodate fans? We used to come here all the time before it was sold to a corporation, but it's just not the same anymore. I've seen this spot pop up a few times and have heard decent things about it. When I checked the menu I saw the Chicken Mango Quesadilla and have been wanting to try it...tonight I had my shot so I took it! This is a sit-down spot. I was greeted quickly and taken to my table. The staff were very friendly. After I placed my order I saw my first robot "dish taker-awayer" thing (I don't know what to call it!). Technology....whaddya gonna do, I'm a right? The Chicken Mango Quesadilla was good. I got a great tip from a friend to ask for green salsa which isn't advertised anywhere, it made a big difference. My favorite combination was dunking the quesadilla in the bean dip for the chips, THEN into the salsa...that's the money shot! On a scale of 1 - 10, I'd go back again and maybe try something else....the prices are a little steep ($20 for a quesadilla) but the overall experience wasn't bad. Refills of that cost extra but it's one of the best appetizers I've been offered. I ordered the small menudo soup, it was huge (like 4 servings). The pork stomach was bite sized, chewy, supple. First time at this restaurant, and I was very happy to sit down to lunch with my husband this weekend. Chips and salsa were brought out immediately as our server Marta quickly greeted us, asked how we're doing, and what we'd like to drink. I ordered the signature Gecko Margarita on the rocks with salt on the rim, and it was delicious (and brought out so fast, I had barely picked up the menu). The tequila has a nice kick, but doesn't overpower the flavor at all. It went down very smoothly, and I was definitely tempted to get another! The verde salsa was unexpectedly sweet, but in a good way that really enhanced my experience and expectations. The salsa tasted very fresh and paired well with the tortilla chips (which were also made well). The red sauce is okay but it's a bit on the mild side for me. Still good, but I'd have liked a spicy option. My husband ordered the crab rellano and loved it. One of the first things he noticed and mentioned is that it's real crab and not imitation. His favorite sides are always beans and rice, and I have to agree the sides were good here too. It's hard to mess up beans and rice; it maybe isn't the most glamorous item on a menu, but it's a wonderful staple to any Latinx dish. I ordered the seafood chimichanga and couldn't believe it had pineapple in it. I love pineapple but I really should pay more attention. It was a wonderful surprise because it was sweeter than I expected for seafood, but amusing and delicious. They must use cream cheese because the texture is so gooey and rich and guaranteed to send me into a cheesy goodness coma. I also liked the bar's setup outside. I wish I could have taken more photos, but I don't want to photograph people because that's weird, but there's a fountain off to one side and the bar straight ahead as you walk in. The bar is gated off, and shaded tents are set up so patrons can enjoy the beautiful spring weather without the sun directly in their faces. Great experience and service. I was crying alone in my car because life is hard and I saw this little Mexican spot and decided to go because Lizards are so cute. I can tell this is a popular spot for white people so I know at least I won't be disappointed and there's alcohol. They also had an assortment of agua fresca at the front. I want to get one to-go! I will be comparing the quality to Manuel's and dos gringos for this review, because it seems like a similar vibe. Chips and salsa: comes with bean dip and green salsa. I'd say the flavors are great. Green salsa is sweet, I like that even tho it's not the norm. The chips were a lil stale and not warm so idk if they're fresh made? I like that there's bean dip because that's good for children. 6.5/10 I ordered the Paloma and steak fajitas because I know that will turn my day around obviously. The waiters are really nice and make me feel welcome. 10/10 The Paloma is sweet and delicious. 7/10 Rice and beans 8.5/10 Steak is flavorful and tender 9/10 Food came out quickly! 10/10 Fajitas came with 5 tortillas so this place has some common sense. We have loved & gone to GG for 21 yrs but sadly our recent experience was our last. So disappointed to say the least. My online birthday order was picked up by my daughter & they forgot half of our family's dinner. As we were sitting down to the birthday dinner table, we had only two orders. We called & they said they had a mixup and we could come back to pick it up... not happy. So we had to drive all the way back to pick it up while the food here, sat & got cold -OR- we could eat what we had, separately from the rest of the family. Sounds like a fun family birthday. Since Mexican food doesn't reheat well, we asked if they could redo the whole order so we could eat together all at once as a family for my birthday. They said absolutely. I was SO happy & appreciative! When my daughter returned back to the restaurant, they told her you're not getting the entire order, but only the part we failed to give you the first time. In fact the MNGR said to my daughter, "we would NEVER do that, so here's the missing part of the order & that's all." She wasn't only rude in how she said it, she could have cared less what happened and what the situation was. I would have thought she'd do anything to keep a customer happy & keep from losing them... but she simply just did not care. So 2 of us ate while she was on her way back home, and the remaining 3 ate after we did. I was pretty shocked they weren't willing to do something and go a little over and above to make up for the mistake they made. Anything at all, as a kind gesture. Oh, they did. Some more free chips. Good food! Pretty standard Mexican fare, staff is really fast and does a good job. Dining room can be cramped but the ambiance isn't bad, definitely a bit of an "Americanized" Mexican restaurant. 4.25 stars. Really solid spot. Not authentic necessarily but multiple really good dishes. Spinach Enchiladas, fish tacos, salmon tacos are some favorites of mine. My wife likes Arroz con Pollo. Can get tacos as a lettuce wrap (pic included of salmon mango lettuce wrap taco). Absolute best thing here is the chips and bean dip (free although refills on bean dip are extra. Sooo good. A lot of the menu though is solid but nothing to write home about. Service is very good. There is another sister chain called Moreno's with the same identical menu but come here to Gecko. Update: Wow..terrible! My wife and I, feeling nostalgic, decided to give this place another try. We thought, "It couldn't get worse, right?" Well, we were wrong. While the service was incredible--our server was an absolute gem--everything else was a disaster. Aside from the hot sauce (which you have to specially request), the food was barely edible. To top it off, I was shocked at how high the prices have become for such poor quality. We should've known something was off when we arrived at 5 p.m. and were the only ones there. By 5:45, only three other tables had been seated. Beer: Barely cold, with a nasty tap taste that overpowered everything. It was supposed to be DosXX, but honestly, it could've been Keystone for all I could tell. Mexican Pizza: This was the real low point. My wife and I are still gagging at the thought of it. The tortilla was soggy, the cheese wasn't melted, and it was smothered in green sauce with chewy bits of "Carne Asada." It looked and tasted like something a college student might throw together using three-week-old leftovers, trying to pass it off as a meal. I feel bad for the server, who was wonderful but stuck working in a place that serves inedible food. The only decent things were the bean dip and the hot sauce--and those are free. My wife and I went here to try out another Mexican restaurant and heard they have a cool outdoor bar. And yes the outdoor bar is pretty cool. Our waitress/bartender Samantha provided a lot of positive input on food and drink choices as well as best times to show up and get a seat outside. Apparently they're pretty busy most of the time outside and the day and time we showed up it wasn't very busy at all. I had the Sonoran burrito and my wife had the Dorado burrito, both great choices as mine came with a red and green sauces. Who doesn't like sauces on their food, right! We had a server named Jose that was attentive and quick. Our chips \ waters were never empty, and the food was top notch. We were asked for our drink orders when we sat down and brought the most amazing chips, bean dip, and salsa. The chips were so warm which we loved! We ordered the mango chicken quesadilla and the choose the sea combo with a salmon and fish taco (cod). The beans and rice that came with the combo were really good. The rice actually had flavor unlike many other Mexican restaurants. The salmon taco was really good! It was a full salmon filet in the taco! It was seasoned really well and all of the other flavors of the salsa and cheese added a nice texture and flavor. The cod taco was good and the cod was seasoned perfectly. It was tender and not dry. I would definitely order these again. They also fill them with a lot of meat! The quesadilla was so yummy! The sweetness of mango was a nice surprise and it was filled with lots of chicken and cheese. The outside was cooked and had a nice crunch. It was a pleasant surprise with how they cooked it. The food here is still great and the people are so nice. Love the service... but the rate at which they are raising their prices has finally turned us away. Most people can't pay over $20 per person for lunch, but the last two times we visited Geck GRill our bill was $40 and then a tip on top of that... It just doesn't work any more ... and $22 for a Chimichanga...? This is not a gourmet place by any means. Pretty soon all of the restaurants like this will be gone because they simply can't survive in this economy. So very sad. read more

Very welcoming staff. The AC was in high gear but it wasn't warm out. Because of this we decided to eat on the patio. Went to the bar to get my kid a juice while we waited. The bar is really nice. A staff member that was in the process of giving food to her table asked me if I needed something. Just to let you know I was sitting on a bar stool at said nice bar with my wallet in my hand. Despite this I told her "a bartender". She informed me she was the bartender. She then finished giving her table there food, walked away and never served me. I ended up realizing the servers are bartenders for their tables drinks. Moving on. Chips, salsa and fried beans come out complimentary. Chips were re-fried and mostly broken. The second round of chips were normal and good. Or server was very nice but not that attentive. I don't blame him so much as I could see he was moving fast. We were his only table outside which makes no sense. I am sure him having our table was an inconvenience. I got the chimichangas that came with beans and rice. The beans and rice were good. The beef was very, very salty. The homemade hot sauce tasted like liquid salt. If you love salty, this place is for you. For me the food was a miss.
