I came in today for a keratin treatment after confirming the price directly with my stylist in advance. She quoted me $220, and I agreed. She applied the full treatment, we let it process for about 20 minutes, and everything was going smoothly. While the product was already in my hair, she returned from the back office and informed me that her manager, George, instructed her to change the price to $300 because my hair was "longer." This was never mentioned during the booking conversation, during my consultation, or before the treatment was applied. I later asked to speak with George directly. I explained that raising the price after the product is already in a client's hair is not an ethical business practice. He ultimately agreed to honor the original quote, but dismissed the concern by saying, "There is no principle about it." That response alone tells me everything I need to know. Price adjustments should be communicated before a service begins, not after a client is already committed and the treatment is sitting in their hair. The pricing list sent to me in advance did not mention any additional charges, and if there was an issue, it should have been addressed upfront. I want to be clear -- my stylist was wonderful and handled the situation kindly. This review is not a reflection of her. This is about management. Transparency and integrity matter, and I am intentional about supporting businesses that uphold both. Unfortunately, this experience showed the opposite. The good news and the bad news: The good news: The friendly, helpful staff, the ease of making an appointment, the lovely salon, the relaxed atmosphere, a very nice colorist/stylist - Robert, a nice shampoo person who gives a very short shampoo but a great massage with the conditioner, an excellent color match on the root touch up. The bad news: After coming in with exactly the style I wanted and just needing it shorter, I left with something altogether different. We discussed this in advance and Robert agreed that the style I had worked for me. I like my hair all brushed straight back to give it some height since I'm fairly short. No part. Haven't had one since I was 8 years old with braids. I have very thick hair that needs the back layered and rather short so that it lays flat against the scalp. I walked out with a part, two uneven sides, the top barely shortened at all after 10 weeks since my last cut and totally flattened to one side with no height at all. The back was left in a solid, heavy clump of hair with a jagged bottom hairline. I expected a lot more for the price charged. I am not a happy camper! It's such a shame since the staff is really lovely and they all tried hard to please, something I really appreciated. read more

After an amazing experience at my usual salon (which I raved about in my last review), I got the itch for an impromptu cut. My go-to spot was booked, so I decided to give this place a try. It takes a lot to truly disappoint me with my hair, but this unfortunately managed to do it. My request was fairly straightforward: a 1 to 1.5-inch trim ("just enough to keep it healthy"), some long layers, and a clean-up for my curtain bangs. What I received was about 4 inches off, a ton of short layers, and bangs that were completely untouched (I had to fix them myself at home). On top of the haircut, the service just felt impersonal from start to finish--so the 'vibe check' was unfortunately not passed this time around. For the price, this was a significant miss. read more

An absolute GEM of a salon! The scheduling process was a delight; I was able to book a last minute appointment on a sunday with no issues. Salon is located in a fantastic area; location is very important to me. Divine service from the moment you enter the salon. I had the honor of having Effie be my stylist. Words can not describe how wonderful she made me feel that day! Apart from being extremely kind, she displayed genuine interest in making sure I was taken care of that day. I love that she took her time to understand what type of look I was going for. I felt completely safe in her hands which has been hard for me in the past with other hair salons. I wholeheartedly appreciate how she took her time with me; other hair salon experiences in the past have made me feel like they were trying to rush me out the door, so to me this meant the world. My hair had alot of dead ends which she cut off perfectly. I love that she added layers to better frame my face as well. Apart from the fabulous haircut, she gave me the best blowout I have ever had! I couldn't stop smiling for hours after I left the salon. I can't thank Effie enough for restoring my confidence and making me love my hair again! The only complaint I have is that she is so far from me since I live in Los Angeles lol. It looks like I'll be having to fly over to Chicago every so often to have my hair done by this angel of a person. First timer here, I booked a haircut through Classpass for 27 credits. Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by the front desk agent and was offered a comfy robe to wear. They had a complementary tea and coffee bar. Bianca was friendly and professional and gave me a lot of product knowledge as well as product suggestions I can purchase for my bleached/damaged ends. I was in and out within 60 minutes. This was a much needed visit for my hair's regrowth. Will def recommend if you have the budget. read more

This was my first experience at Trio. My expectations were fairly high since I'd heard so many good things about it, and I can definitely say it lived up to expectations! The staff is incredibly friendly, efficient, and professional about everything from scheduling to making sure you are happy with your entire experience. They offer complimentary tea, coffee, and water with your service. This was my first haircut by Mio (experienced, award-winning stylist!) was just incredibly lovely and attentive to what I wanted. I went from long hair to an undercut with a short bob and it was literally the best haircut I've ever had in my life. I used to do the Japanese straightener on my hair until I discovered the Brazilian straightener, which is much better and cheaper! Back in the Japanese straightening days I would head to Trio every 4-5 months, pay $700 and sit in a chair for 7 hours with the hopes of leaving with straight hair. The things we do for beauty....:) It's been about 2 years since I've been to Trio, but I was satisfied with my experiences there. Like Olivia said it's an adorable little house in a great location. Lisa did my straightening and then Brooke cut my hair. Brooke was very good at cutting hair (especially curly hair), but personally I don't think she compares to my favorite hairdresser at Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa...Lenny! read more

I had a horrible experience with Trio Salon. I came to the Wicker Park location a while back and had my hair cut by Megan, who I had found on Salon Apprentice. I am not picky about my hair, and even though she cut it a little shorter (perhaps an inch or so) than I'd wanted (just a trim off the length, but more dramatic long layers). The cut itself looked awesome, so I was OK with the shortened length. Megan and I communicated via text and she asked me to be her model for her long layer evaluation cut. I didn't even need a trim yet, but I agreed anyway as a favor to her because she seemed so sweet. I wish I hadn't. Megan is a very nice girl and probably very talented. It certainly would have been a great cut if I had wanted my hair to be just below shoulder length. But I didn't. I came in and sat down (a few minutes late, as I had texted her that I would be) and she asked what I wanted. My exact words were "Just the tiniest bit off the ends" and to clean up the layers/bangs. I stood up and Megan used a comb to show me how much she was going to trim. It was about a quarter inch from the left side and closer to an inch from the right, which was longer. I then stood after she shampooed me while she cut the back, though in retrospect I'm not sure why I had to stand for so long when my hair was well above the back of the chair. When I walked into the salon, my hair was below my breasts in the front, and below my bra strap in the back. Now it is just below my collarbone. At one point while she was cutting (while I was still standing) I noticed that when she pulled the new layer over the part she had already cut, it was at least 2 inches longer. This was on the left side, the side that was supposed to have less than a 1/2 inch. Megan asked me at one point what I thought, and I told her that it was shorter than I'd asked for. She didn't say anything. Then, after it was dry, and she was finishing the cut, she took off nearly another inch. I know this because I could see where it was in comparison to the snap on the drape. What makes me the angriest is that I did not even need a haircut, and I ended up with hair that can't even be considered long. I don't expect perfection when I go through salon apprentice, but I DO expect the stylist to listen to what I want, and NOT continue cutting after I've told her it's too short. I expect some issues, but I DEFINITELY do not expect to walk out with hair significantly shorter than it was when I walked in for "the tiniest bit" cut off. I have not had my hair this short in 8 years because I've spent that time growing it out. I was unhappy with it in the salon and Megan knew that. She claimed that it had gotten too short because one side was longer than the other, but the real reason that it got too short was because she kept cutting it trying to match the sides and get her line straight. Apparently having a straight line was more important than 4 inches of my hair. As I left, I paid my $20 and realized I had to go to an ATM for cash to tip Megan. But as I was walking to Chase, I realized that I didn't want to tip her for ruining my long hair. That's what she did - she ruined my long hair. I'm furious. read more

This is a nice, friendly, unassuming salon in a posh location with plenty of street parking. I went for a haircut with Mio after reading many reviews, and could not be happier with the beautiful haircut she gave my thick, long locks. My appointment was at 11:00 on a Thursday morning; traffic was heavy but moving, and I had no problem finding a parking spot right around the corner. The salon is not huge, but even with many hairdos going on at the same time was not at all cramped or crowded at all. At $125 my haircut wasn't cheap, but worth every penny, and I will definitely be back. Highly recommend! read more

I searched many many salons before choosing to go with Trio. I was just in town for a couple of days and needed to be spruced up before heading back home. After reading reviews and looking at websites, Trio one. Close to where I was staying, just a few blocks away, the salon was very welcoming. Walked in, greeted right away. Was told to grab a robe to put on and my stylist would be with me shortly. A gentleman came over (maybe the owner?), super friendly asked if I needed any beverages and then took me to my station, said I would be more comfortable there, magazines to read and relax. Mirrors were positions/ stationed at different angles so I could actually see the back of my hair being done. Vanessa was awesome. I believe she was a level 3 stylist. (you get to choose your stylist basically from junior 1 level to master stylist). We chatted about different colors and what I really wanted to achieve in the color. I told her I was comfortable with her opinion and we decided to do partial highlights. Absolutely loved the finished result!! And I believe it was Cecilia that did my hair wash and finished out the blow dry- best head washing/ massage I've had in years!! I'm a tried and true sucker for Apprentices / people starting out ... etc. One, it fits into my budget at the moment, and for the most part, you meet truly interesting people - conversations vary and I've been 95% satisfied over all through the years. I dont' think that's a bad average! I could write two reviews here, as I had two appointments for badly needed services. My colorist called me because I had modeled for another stylist at their North location which has since been closed. I think, this time I am definitely on my way back to my medium auburn. Which, will be a challenge because of how much grey I have now! (also, given what they had to work with starting out - correcting the work of not one bad go -- but two. My haircut turned out to be awesome. In both cases the instructors were fantastic. I also must point out, their wash basins are by far the most comfy I've come across in all my time going to a salon! read more

Since my first review technically began at the other location and then ended up at this one, I decided to copy and paste. Full disclosure - I've been blond (highlights) for a long time, and there's a time where several years of highlighting and lightening ends up causing your hair to just not look healthy anymore. Worse, the last time I had it done (at another place) it turned out orangeish. Now, I have always hated anything in the red family (no offense) so being orange was a definite no-no. Enter TRIO. I signed up to be a model for Vanessa as I'd read some great reviews of her (thank you Yelp!). Upon arriving I met Vanessa and Nikki (I believe her senior stylist supervisor, who has the most perfect eyebrows and gets them done by Nicole who is their spa guru) and they talked about my hair and what would work best. I told them to do whatever they wanted. I ended up with a mahogany type/eggplant color that was both flattering for my geisha girl complexion (that surely doesn't come from my father's greek genes) and left my hair looking really, really healthy. I have since been back to Vanessa several times for color and a Brazilian Keratin Treatment. She takes her time making sure that you are happy with everything and you never feel rushed. She's also quite up to date on a lot of the shows that I am far too old to still be watching and is just fun to chat with in general (excellent quality when spending several hours in someone's chair). She's officially graduated (yay Vanessa!) which means her rates have gone up, but she's still a bargain by downtown standards. AND I recently signed up to be a model for Jess, who did straightening and color and she did a fabulous job as well. I found out later that I was one of/or maybe it was her first (?) BKT straightenings, but you would never know it. Nikki would come over and offer some tips and Jess took them in stride and kept on with the tedious project. Vanessa had told me when I first went to her that the more times I get my hair colored since going from orange to normal-ish and get the bkt done it will look better each time - and it does. Mio Sota has been my hair stylist since 2006 and will always be the only that cuts my hair until she retires. I met her first when she worked for Vidal Sassoon where she worked for a while. Unfortunely she stopped working at Sasson and left without a trace... I called around to 20 salons in the area and found her at Dennis Bartolomei. She recently moved to another salon called Trio at 712 N Wabash. I find it very hard to find the right person to cut my hair. Mio pays close attention to all the details during my visit and clearly communicates what she is going to do for me. What I love about the way she cuts my hair is that from the moment I leave up until my next visit, my hair looks great dry and styled. I find that skill very difficult to have and she's got it all. I tried this salon after responding to an ad placed by Harlow on salonapprentice.com. I just wanted to add some lowlights to my hair for the fall. Harlow did a fabulous job and she is really great in explaining what she is doing and is just easy to talk to. My hair is colored blonde and she added a brown tone and a copper tone to it. I have green eyes and it really brings them out in a way that the all over blonde did not. I have had so many compliments and everyone says that it looks really natural. The products they use are all natural and my hair feels silky soft. Plus, the service was really inexpensive because she is an apprentice. But, it did take 3 hours. Each step of the process was checked by the manager, who was also super nice. So, I knew that it was being done correctly. I am super happy with my new hair. Thanks, Harlow and Trio! read more

Nicky did my color and was great. My hair looks natural and full of life again. Alex, the owner, did my cut. Let me just say, what a cool guy! Nicole at Trio gives the BEST facials and waxes. I've followed her for years and my skin has been transformed. She's European trained and I think that makes a remarkable difference in the maticulousness of her services. Tell her I sent you and she will treat you like the VIP you are. Her treatment room is tiny and you can hear noises from the salon but if you want quiet - you'd go to a library, right? I am most concerned about the results on my face. I used to get cyst-like acne and now my skin is even, acne-free and supple. Nicole works magic and doesn't try to sell you products, her goal is to get you looking your best. And it works! read more

I recently decided I wanted go a shade (or several) darker (on my already dark brown hair) and went to WALMART and picked up a nice cheap box of black hair dye. I don't know who I thought I was, but after... I realized I went too dark, and also at that point my hair was super long, so it was a lot more work than I expected. With that being said, I missed a whole section!! I freaked out, went back to the store and got a box that was as close to my natural hair color that I could find thinking I could pretty much press the "undo" button on what I had just done. Well, WRONG. My hair was a rainbow of blacks/browns/and almost red. Went to Trio-Nikki fixed me!!!!!!!!! She pretty much explained in detail what happened and why you cant get rid of super dark black that easily. She was very knowledgable, super nice, and did an awesome job! It's a beautiful sunny day in mid-February, and I decided to treat myself to a facial after a tiring work week. I never had a facial...at least not one that wasn't complimentary like the ones offered at Nordstrom or another non-salon/spa place. I'm more of a do-it-at home-use-a-face-mask-I bought-at-Ulta type person. I figured I'd get a "real" facial experience and at the same time, try Trio. I was able to book an appt. at the last minute (ahem, yesterday) with Nicole, who is the esthetician at Trio. Trio looks like a small and intimidating salon from outside. Once you're inside, it looks and feels bigger (and still feels intimidating to me). The girls working at the front were welcoming and attended to me right away. It was hoppin' in this salon - so many people getting their hair done...which one day I will have to try. I only had to wait a minute or two before heading to the small room where the facials are done. Inside this room, there is the chair where you lay, a small tv screen (nothing was on when I was there, but music was playing in the background), and the normal stuff needed for a facial/massages. You can hear the noise from the salon, but it's not distracting. I let Nicole know that this was my first facial, and she explained step-by-step the whole process. She even warned me that some of the products would sting slightly, but with the massages I wouldn't feel a thing. During the process, she turned on this steamer thing. It's directed at your face, and in 15 minutes it was over. I was getting hot (I'm still young to experience hot flashes)! Oh, and while this whole sauna steamer thing was going on, Nicole massaged my hands, wrapped them in plastic, and then finally in heat gloves, so I was definitely feeling the heat. The final step was the face mask. By that time, I was totally relaxed and I think I even dozed off for a few minutes. Nicole patted my face down with moisturizer and eye cream before I left. The girls at the front commented that my face was glowing and looked good. I thought that was funny. It was a pleasant experience, and I would probably treat myself again...not any time soon though. It was pricey, but I think it's probably average for a facial in a salon like that and for the location. When booking for any of the services, they're will ask for a credit card to hold your place, but you don't have to pay with one. The only time they will charge is if you don't give at least 4 hours notice to cancel or don't show up. FYI: they even offer facials for men...in case anyone was interested. read more

I decided to try Trio after sitting next to a woman in a Gold Coast restaurant who had the most radiant blonde highlighted hair. She told me she went to Trio and referred me to Jackie. Jackie is AMAZING. She is experienced and understands exactly what you need. Renata is the one to go to for color. She has always been nice and will tell you what she thinks and not exactly what you want to hear about your color. (For example, she would never tell me that I would look good as a platinum blonde when I have brunette hair.) Every time I have been to Renata, I have come away happy w/ my highlights and color. I have gotten countless compliments on my hair and that's even after 6 weeks (when I know I have to go in again and soon!). Only downside is lack of parking. But what do you expect? I had a fantastic experience at Trio Salon yesterday. Having followed Tiffany over from another salon, I knew that my cut would be of good quality, but I was also really impressed with the customer service, cleanliness and organization of the salon space, and friendly and professional vibe. When I walked in, the owner (Alex) was having a meeting with his staff. I was a bit early for my appointment so I sat down on one of the benches, and the receptionist provided me with a delicious cup of hot cocoa while I waited. I was so impressed with not only what Alex was saying to his staff, but also his manner of speaking to them. They were basically having a discussion about the mission of the salon, quality of service, customer service, etc. I've been to other salons where the salon owners don't treat their stylists as well, but Alex was the total opposite: friendly, engaging, respectful, approachable... and he was encouraging his staff to be the same. Really impressive! What a great environment to work in. Side note: I finished my hot cocoa before the staff meeting was over, and not just one, but TWO other staff members ended up coming over to me to ask if I needed anything else to drink while I kept waiting. So kind of them! Tiffany (who is apprenticing for another 3 months-- only $30 for a cut right now!) did a really great job with my haircut. I've been going to her for maybe a year now (ish) and she has sped up her time to about an hour and a half (that's including blow dry, shampoo, etc). I used to have a pixie cut and am now trying to grow my hair out to a graduated bob, and she and Alex (who checked in throughout the process and provided helpful, positive instruction to Tiffany) came up with a really good solution for my hair given that I wanted a trim but also wanted to preserve the length. Tiffany thinned out some of the bulk from the back and pieced out my bangs a bit. I really like it a lot! Overall: the most positive experience I've ever had at a salon. I have been getting my hair cut by Mio for years, and have never been disappointed. She is not only an incredibly talented stylist, but also a pleasure to talk to. She always takes the time to make sure I walk out with a perfect cut. If you don't know the exact style you want she is more than skilled and artistic enough to create something new for you. I cannot recommend her enough. Even though I don't live in the city I find that its more than worth my time to head down to see her. Of course there's more to a salon than just the stylist, and everyone else at Trio has never failed to be friendly and welcoming.
