Gaylord is one of those rare institutions in London that has been opened for 50 years. To celebrate their 50th anniversary they created a menu listing a few dishes at their 1966 prices, where curries were as cheap as six shillings (30p) The place was much more grand than a regular Indian restaurant where staff are in suits. Service was attentive, regularly coming over to check if things were okay. The regular 2016 prices are also much dearer than most Indian restaurants, mostly around £12-£20 for a curry. Old classic cushioned chairs paired with linen tablecloth tables and cotton napkins also add a bit of class to the place. There were a few rules to follow for their special anniversary evening, Only a main and two sides per person and only 60 minutes per seating for a couple but with the quick service, it was no problem. There was also a compulsory cover charge of £2 for poppadoms and a tray of mango chutney, mint and coriander chutney and spicy vegetable pickles. It something nice to get us started although if even a choice I would have declined it. Poppadom and chutneys It was just the standard poppadom you get everywhere else, light and crispy and melts in your mouth after a while. Never been a fan of the strong sharp spicy tasting pickle so I won't comment more on that. The mango chutney was nice and thick, very sticky which didn't serve well as a dip due how overly sweet it was. It was better with the curries to add a sweet edge to it. The mint and coriander however, was very refreshing and went well with the lightness of the poppadoms Strawberry and saffron lassi I was expecting more for £5.75 for a strawberry lassi but it tasted no more than poor quality strawberries blended in a yogurt. Even if it's just a nice of spice in there to jazz it up or anything creative to justify the high price. Tasted like strawberry milkshake but with a mild sourness from the yogurt. The saffron in the other lassi was far to weak to add any real essence. Maybe at the very most there was some woody honey tones but was very overtaken by the sweetened yogurt itself. Wasn't bad but just wasn't worth £5.25 Lamb Rogan This was very rich in it's savoury flavours which suggests to me it was highly authentic as it wasn't sweetened for the western palate. It was heavily spiced, achieving a wonderful complexity of flavour without being too spicy. It was almost too savoury for me but a little mango chutney helped achieve a more balanced flavour for my palate. I did enjoy the thick consistency making it possible to enjoy with my naan. Sadly the lamb itself was quite dry and tough, ones that as you chew the meat firbes gets stuck in your teeth. Murgh bhuna Dhania Masala I much preferred the medium spiced aromas of this curry. The selection of spices were less harsh but rather warmer and rounded with a stronger umami flavour given off by the chicken that had been braising in the spices for a long amount of time, giving that sweetness to it that the lamb rogan didn't have. Just like any bhuna the gravy was reduced so the consistency of the curry was thick. Sadly the chicken was also dry in this dish, losing all it's succulent textures. Onion bhaji The ratio of batter and filling was perfect, achieving a light and crisp texture and loaded with vibrant spices and seasoned well. The onions were incredibly soft and gave off it's lovely sweet aromas creating a lovely bite between the batter. Saag Aloo Very mild complex spices wrapping the velvety spinach and fluffy potatoes. I also like how it wasn't swimming in grease. Daal Makhani This was probably one of the richest varieties I've had. Perfectly soften, thick in it's gravy reduction and full of depth and flavour with the ginger pieces on top giving it that kick of warmth. Perfect with naan or rice but on it's own it was a tad bit salty. Naan This wasn't as fluffy or as light as I had hope. In fact it was quite tough and chewy probably because it wasn't made fresh. It arrived cold, lacking the fragrance of fresh bread. And even though sesame seeds were present, the flavours weren't. But it was adequate enough to be dipped in curry and for 10p, I can't complain further. We did have a lovely meal at Gaylord but the extremely cheap prices made it more worthwhile and enjoyable. At the regular prices I don't think it would justify the tough and dry pieces of meat in the curry but choosing such a lean cut of lamb and leaving the chicken braising in the curry too long even if the curry itself was full of flavour. It's hard to judge during this event as they could have ignored these attention to detail to meet demand of having hundreds of people to celebrate this evening with them. But with high competitors out there such as Delhi Grill and even Delhi Grill and even Dishroom that offer much creative and higher quality dishes at a fraction of the price, it's hard to find a reason to come back.

Food, food, food.........speaking of which this North Indian speciality cuisine menu is a one off in the heart of London. As you can imagine the demanding use of this restaurant has begun to take a slight toll. I attended a close friends birthday lunch celebration. We were a group of 8 enthusiasts. The service was good, polite staff, food was good too with the added attraction of live jazz! What a smooth lunch we had with cobra beer and mouth dropping desserts to end the perfect lunch. I would like to see them change the interiors to something more fresh; with a 'name' brand identity shift.

Oh come on, you're smirking just a little bit aren't you. The name didn't escape me either, one of the reasons for choosing this place above the others when we were out and about the other night. But it was a rather propitious discovery as it turned out. The Gaylord, which prepares Mughal (North Indian) cuisine is a bit of a legend in the restaurant circuit, and although it is part of a chain it feels very independent and high class. When it's busy, it can be a little haphazard in here but it's really the food you're coming for and the prices are remarkably fair. The hardest part for me was choosing what to eat. The menu is enormous. If you're a fan of Lamb then I'd definitely suggest the Rogan E Nishat, but I had a thumbs up from everyone in my party, and they all had something different.

Enjoyed the price of 1966's menu celebrating its 50 years in London where a chicken tikka masala was six shillings which is equivalent to 30p today. So we ordered literally everything on the special menu for a special celebration.

Went to Gaylord for their 50th anniversary celebrations. I must say that this was a fab offer of 1966 prices for food that day. A few pointers though: (good and bad) - the decor is light spacious and a good history worth its paintings and tradition you sensed it was a historic part of Central London. - service was friendly with the manager. - service was overall slow, and a bit all over place. I had a waiter splash wine as he served friend onto my plate. - limited to only one main and two sides that was fair enough I thought. No over indulgence or taking liberties. - the portions were OK. Not crazy amounts of meat in my Rogan Josh. I would have liked more. I'm not sure what you get normally. - good amount of rice as a side dish. Good enough to share a part of it. - bhaji's were nicely made and very good. - the bad on the whole was that they out a £2 surplus on condiments each plus automatic service charge. - the mango lassi was £5.25! Mental!!! It should be nearer £3 at most. It wasn't even very good. Not lassi. More like a packet juice. I have this a lot at home so I know the taste. Didn't see the normal menu otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. - Upon bill we noticed addition that we didn't order of samosas. They were OK about it TBH but I don't get how that can suddenly get on bill. We didn't even have that item on menu given. We were only ordering 1966 prices. Felt a bit suspicious. In any case they said the machine was wrong and we went on our way eventually. I wouldn't hurry back. Seems pricey for what it is. Of course might be to do with being Central but I prefer going to eat Indian in south, east or north areas that are cheaper and just as authentic.

Amazing Indian cuisine. The best I've had, authentic, and with little fuss. Yet the place is all class.

Food is average but the place is an absolute rip off. So many "hidden" fees. Avoid at all costs!

It used to be good. Now is so-so. Ok for a palate used to mild kormas - not ethnic enough! Service needs improvement.

They have done an impressive job on the remodel updating it with a bright and clean interior tastefully decorated and well equipped. Two large screen TV's play Bollywood music videos and sporting events. When you enter there is a small kebab shop and takeaway, and you enter through the second set of doors to the dining room. The food is amazing! A dazzling array of choices and some special items. We ordered Karahi Fish, Karahi Methi Gosht, Tarka Daal and a whole tandoori chicken. This was more than enough food for four and we were all very happy to try so many tasty items. First the fish was perfectly prepared and delicately spiced. It had a great texture and wasn't "swimming" in sauce. The lamb curry was ordered spicy and the chef actually came to ask us how spicy we actually wanted it, so we explained EXTRA EXTRA EXTRA hot.. he laughed and asked if we were sure and we said we were. He delivered! It was a spicy inferno without being overpowering. The daal was very nice but the highlight was the Tandoori chicken.. it was the most flavorful one we had tried in a long time and came out perfectly moist and juicy and oozing with flavour, and at 7 quid it was quite a deal as well. We also noted on the menu the chefs special.. a WHOLE LEG OF LAMB! We vowed a night of hedonism and drinking accompanied by a lamb feast. We followed through the following week and we were rewarded for our determination with a stunning piece of culinary magic. The leg of lamb was so tender and flavourful that we decided to make it a monthly ritual.. but be forewarned you have to order it 24 hours in advance.. so think ahead! The Lahore Masala House is a welcome addition to the Kentish Town landscape.. they have great lunch deals and they also stay up late for those leaving the locals or the Forum.

Absolutely loved Tayyabs!…read more The one thing I knew I needed when visiting London was Indian food and I'm so happy I found this restaurant. Found this restaurant on Yelp after seeing such great reviews and I wasn't disappointed! At first, I was nervous my friend and I wouldn't get a table due to how busy the restaurant was but since we were only two people, we had no issue getting a table. Seating is tight! You are almost arm to arm with the individuals sitting around you which I actually found to be a great experience. My friend and I ended up striking conversation with the people next to us which led to a fun dining experience. Service was quick! We ordered food and it came out quickly and all waiters were super attentive. In terms of food, everything was absolutely delicious and portion sizes were huge! First we ordered the lamb chops and the samosas which were absolutely amazing. We then ordered the chicken and lamb dishes with the naan which completely filled us. I can't wait to come back and I will absolutely be dreaming about this restaurant until I come back!

The tandoori items come out sizzling on a hot plate marinated to perfection. They also bring you some complimentary pappadum and salad. There are three sauces on each table (yogurt, a sweet hot sauce, and a tamarind? Sauce. A pitcher of water is also there for your convenience which I love. All the items are very reasonably priced. On my way out I noticed some people bringing in beer so maybe BYOB? I would definitely come back here. Seems like it gets busy so plan accordingly.
